Academic Scholarships may be granted to new or current SSCC students. New
student scholarship awards are for one year and are renewable for a second year
based on academic performance and availability. Current students may apply during
their second semester at the College, and scholarships are awarded for one
year. Academic scholarships are for fall and spring semesters only. Alabama State Board of Education policy requires that scholarship recipients be
U. S. citizens or resident aliens who meet institution requirements. Academic
Scholarship awards are primarily based on outstanding achievement in academics.
High School applicants must have a minimum 3.0 quality point average based
solely on their academic courses (English, history, language, math, science).
Minimum ACT, SAT, or COMPASS scores are required as defined in the application
process. Students who have not taken the ACT or SAT may schedule to take
the COMPASS for no charge at Shelton State. The ACT minimum is a 20 overall
including a 20 in Math, and a 20 in English. SAT minimum is 526 in Math, and
480 in Verbal. COMPASS scores must place the student in College level classes.
Additional weighted selection criteria include a student's AP or Advanced courses,
a required essay, recommendation(s), extra-curricular activities, and residence
within the SSCC service area.
Scholarships are awarded based on availability of funds; meeting the minimum
requirements does not guarantee a scholarship award.
