Scholars Program Award

Scholarship Description
Average Award:$1500.00 Criteria:Need:Yes. Minimum GPA:No. Class Year:No. Other: No. Scholarship History:Established by Frances Waddell Camden '43 in 1982. Mrs. Camden was the executrix for the estate of Miss Marable '45. Beatrice Marable was born July 3, 1893, the ninth child born to her parents in Prince George County, Virginia. Her family farmed and was very poor. Beatrice was encouraged to study, and she was the only one of her siblings to go beyond their one-room schoolhouse. In 1908 a teacher, caught in a storm, stayed the night in the Marables' home. She left a magazine behind with an article about the State Normal School for Women in Harrisonburg, Virginia, which was to have its first session in the fall of 1909. Beatrice applied in December 1908, and hers was the first application to be accepted. She was known ever after as the college's 'First Daughter.'
