The Dwight D. Opperman Scholar Program

Scholarship Description
The program awards five or more merit-based, full-tuition scholarships for outstanding first-year students, and the scholarships are renewable. In addition, the program provides an annual grant of $10,000 to each Opperman Scholar to help pay for books and living expenses while attending Drake Law School. The program was created to identify and reward students of exceptionally high achievement and potential whose emphasis on learning influences and inspires others around them. There are more than fifteen Opperman Scholars currently enrolled in the Law School and more than thirty Opperman Scholar Alumni. Opperman Scholars meet annually in the beginning of the year with Mr. Opperman at the home of the Dean for brunch; and a reunion banquet for Opperman Scholar alumni and current students is held each year. An Opperman Scholar Association facilitates continued networking and communication. Candidates for the Opperman Scholar program must: be accepted as a first-year student at Drake Law School; show evidence of superior academic record and potential; achieve noteworthy law entrance exam scores; and demonstrate significant community and extracurricular experiences. Among the candidates who meet the above criteria, preference will be given to: children of employees of West Publishing Co. and West Group and children of Article III federal judges. The scholarships are renewable for the second and third years provided the Opperman Scholar remains in the upper third of his or her class.
