Scholarship Description

The University of the District of Columbia Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of the Robert Taylor Bonds Endowed Scholarship in Education. The endowed scholarship fund was established by Duane Robina Bonds, M.D. in honor and memory of her father, Mr. Robert T. Bonds, an advocate and supporter of teaching as a career. Mr. Bonds grew up during the Depression as one of 12 children in very humble circumstance in Southwest Washington, D.C. He believed that the key to his success was his determination to get an education. He worked several jobs to put himself through high school and then college. Mr. Bonds graduated from the District of Columbia Public School (DCPS) system (Birney Elementary School, Randall Junior High School, and Dunbar High School), and is an alumnus of Miner Teachers College which later was folded into the University of the District of Columbia. Mr. Bonds began his career as an elementary school teacher at Birney Elementary School until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. After his deployment from active duty in 1952, where he last served our country as First Lieutenant in Korea, Mr. Bonds immediately resumed his teaching career at Slowe Elementary School. In 1955, he spent one year in a research-testing position at Ross School and he earned his Masters Degree in Education from Howard University. From 1956-1972, he was employed as an elementary school principal at Hayes-Ludlow, Payne, and Simon. Scholarship Award: The Robert Taylor Bonds Scholarship in Education is awarded annually; and supports tuition, fees and books (depending on availability of funds) for the spring and fall semesters and summer sessions for four (4) academic years, provided the recipient remains eligible. Continuing eligibility for the award will be determined each semester. Awardees will be known as “Bonds Scholars.” Eligibility: Applicants must reside in the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia, be enrolled as a full-time student in one of the University’s four-year teacher education programs; and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5. Applicants must submit a typewritten double-spaced 500 word essay on the following topic: “Education remains the key to both economic and political empowerment. That is why the schools charged with educating African Americans have perhaps, the greatest, the deepest challenge of all.” Barbara Jordon, Lawyer and U.S. Congressperson. Explain how the quotation is personally meaningful to you and your education at the University of the District of Columbia. Explain why you have chosen teaching as a career. Applicants must submit three (3) letters of recommendation from persons other than family members who know the applicant well; one (1) letter from a principal, president, dean, chairperson, teacher, professor, counselor, or a community leader. Applications must include official copies of school or college transcripts.
