The Opportunity Program (TOP)

Scholarship Description
The National Science Foundation's The Opportunity Program (TOP), will make scholarships available to freshmen entering fall '08, who will be majoring in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. The scholarship is renewable for four years. The amount of the award will depend on a student's FAFSA among other factors, but could cover the tuition for the entire four years at Adelphi. Application Process: A student must first file an admissions application and then complete and file the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1, but no later than February 15 to ensure maximum eligibility. Special Provisions: Students must submit a FAFSA each year. High school students applying to the program should have a combined SAT score of 1200 on the verbal reasoning and mathematics sections and an average of 90 or equivalent. Admission to The Opportunity Program will be by a selection committee and it is competitive. Students must remain in a biology, chemistry or physics major through graduation and they cannot switch from one science to another without losing their TOP scholarship. Financial need will be determined by the information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). TOP will function to retain students from entrance through graduation by fostering a sense of unity among students, which will be achieved by maintaining the group of entering TOP students as a functional cohort. Activities that will serve to enrich both the academic experience and the cohesion of the group are an integral part of this objective. These activities will include field trips, research projects, seminars, and professional conferences. Close contact with professor-mentors will be a key element in retention of students. TOP will provide placement assistance for post-graduation careers and/or graduate school through the use of existing post-graduate study and career development offices within Adelphi. Notification: Eligible students will receive a letter of notification from the Scholarship Committee. After filing the FAFSA, a financial assistnace award summary detailing all financial aid will be mailed to the student.
