The Honors Program
About the Honors Program
Each year, a group of outstanding high school students is chosen to be part of a special college experience—the St. John Fisher College Honors Program. By providing select topics for exploration and creating an environment where students receive personal attention, the Honors Program helps participants expand their thinking and personal limits. Honors students study and exchange ideas with other scholars—students and faculty—in small classes created especially for them.
Courses recently taught in the Honors program include The Medieval World; How the Mind Works; Power Pop: American Media Since 1950; and Politics, Literature, and the Arts in Latin America. The program also provides opportunities to participate in co-curricular activities, including lectures, trips, and an Honors Journal, with other Honors students and faculty.
Qualifications
Students who qualify for the top two tiers of merit-based scholarships at Fisher are automatically considered for the Honors Program. Eligible students typically have maintained a grade point average of 90 or above in high school, rank in the top twenty percent of their class, and have combined SAT scores in math and critical reading of 1,100 or higher. Students must apply for admission prior to February 1st to be considered for the Honors Program.
Admissions Process
The invitation to participate in the Honors Program is made after the student is admitted to St. John Fisher College. Students who qualify for Honors Program consideration are required to complete an Honors Program application.
Opportunities for Scholarship
Students admitted to the Honors Program will receive a $12,000 scholarship over four years, in addition to any other merit-based or special scholarship awards they qualify for. The Honors Program annual scholarship amount is $3,000 ($2,500 in scholarship and $500 in the form of a book voucher).
The Honors Program scholarship may be combined with the Trustees,’ Presidential, Service, or First Generation Scholarship Awards. It may also be combined with any need-based aid offered by Fisher. It may not be combined with the Science Scholarship.
