J. C. Crawford Memorial Foundation Scholarship
Scholarship Description
The family of Avis Claflin Kautzmann has established a memorial scholarship in her honor. Avis Claflin Kautzmann graduated from VCSTC in 1940. She had a long and distinguished career spanning over 50 years in the public schools of North Dakota. One scholarship will be awarded each year to a senior majoring in Elementary Education. The applicant for the scholarship must be a North Dakota resident, demonstrate financial need, and show academic promise. The amount of the scholarship will be determined based on the earnings in the fund. The scholarship recipient will be selected by the faculty of the Division of Education & Psychology. Avis Claflin Kautzmann epitomized the very best of elementary school teaching. She not only excelled in the classroom in the area of academics, she also demonstrated throughout her career, that special sensitivity to each and every one of her students. It was common for her to purchase clothing articles for her children to insure that they were properly dressed for the winter weather. She was also known to bake a birthday cake for each one of her students as a special treat on their big day. Avis spent many of her years in one room rural schools across the state. In her own words, Avis stated, "I taught in country schools south of Judson, north of Mandan, and at Sweet Briar. I started teaching in Mandan in 1944 and retired in 1992. I loved every minute of it. I wanted to be a teacher since 2nd grade. I could be a constant student. I've always loved school and learning."
