Purpose: This award honors retired faculty and is funded by contributions from their former students, their friends, and the professors themselves. Those honored include Ernest G. Bormann, William S. Howell, J. Vernon Jensen, David R. Rarick, George L. Shapiro, Donald K. Smith, Robert L. Scott, and E. W. Ziebarth. Value: Two awards up to $,5000.00 each. [This amount of money will be divided by the Awards Committee and preference will be given to Ph.D. graduate students taking written exams during Summer]. Eligibility: Awards are given to graduate students currently active in the department and in residence during the academic year. No specific criteria are attached to this award. The award is intended to recognize students who give evidence of becoming independent scholars, which is the aim of all graduate study. Evidence of such scholarly achievement includes research into the problems and promises of human communication, communicating the results of that research in the classroom and to graduate student and faculty colleagues, and presenting research to fellow communication scholars at conventions and conferences and in journals. In evaluating each applicant, the Awards Committee will consider this question: How actively is this student participating in the exchange of ideas that is part of the ongoing scholarly conversation in the field? Please include: 1. A letter from your faculty adviser is required as a part of your application. 2. Curriculum Vita.
