Scholarship Description
Established in 1990 by Mr. Neil H. Hightower, then president and CEO of Thomaston Mills. Mr. Banks was an outstanding citizen and a trusted community leader in both Upson and Lamar Counties. He began his educational career in 1975 at Monroe Worthy Schools as a math teacher. Monroe Worthy was named for his uncle. In the early 1970s he became an assistant principal at Worthy Junior High, then principal in 1975. The school later became known as Upson Middle School. He was widely known for his leadership and his fairness to all students and teachers. He retired in 1987 and was survived by his wife Mary W. Banks, a retired teacher from the Lamar County public school system. He taught courses at Gordon College and served in an advisory capacity in personnel matters for Thomaston Mills. He was founder of an organization called “Men of Action.” This group was dedicated to the development and guidance of troubled youth. Mr. Bank’s concern and sincere interest in the youth of the community was well-respected. The organization he founded remains active. Mr. Banks also was supportive of the Boy Scouts in Lamar and Upson Counties. He was a loyal and dedicated member of the St. Mary AME Church, having served in many capacities from Sunday School teacher to Financial Secretary.
