The Knight Scholar program is established to recognize continuing Southern Virginia University students who have excelled both academically and in other aspects of life such as student government and leadership, community service, athletics, fine arts, or church service. This award emphasizes the concept of the leader/servant as defined by the University's motto "Learn That Life Is Service," and as epitomized by the benefactor of the award, Mr. Glade M. Knight. The award allows recipients to use this recognition in resumes for postgraduate employment and education opportunities. Selection Process: All students who meet qualifications and criteria for the Knight Scholarship Award are encouraged to apply. Applications should be submitted to the Dean of Students for consideration. Knight Scholars will be selected by a panel consisting of the Dean of Students and two faculty selected by the Vice President for Academic Affairs (Provost). The panel will submit their recommendations to the President’s Council for final selection and approval. Duration of Award/Multiple Awards: Once a student is designated a Knight Scholar they will retain the title for life; however, to retain the accompanying scholarship monetary award, the student must meet the minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA standard and have completed at least 26 hours of credits at Southern Virginia University. Qualifying students may reapply for the Knight Scholar program each year they attend SVU. The second and third awards will be based upon meeting all criteria plus completion of 56 SVU Credits or 88 SVU Credits respectively. Minimum Requirements for Pool: Completion of 26 SVU credits, a cumulative SVU GPA of 3.3, and active involvement in service and extracurricular activities that emphasize the concept of the leader/servant. Scholarship Monetary Award: In addition to the lifetime honor of being a Knight Scholar, the successful candidate will receive a $500 annual scholarship ($250 per semester) towards tuition for each year of attendance following the Freshman year. Students who receive the award two or more times will be allowed to wear the special Knight Scholar regalia at graduation.
