This scholarship is for graduating seniors from any public or private high school who are legal residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia. To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must be planning to major in journalism at an accredited US four-year college or university. Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence and participation in extracurricular activities. To apply for this scholarship, applicants must provide two published articles or graded essays that reflect the candidates writing style. Applicants must submit an essay or 200 words that answers the questions: "What are the three character traits a journalist should have and why?" Applicants must also submit a second essay that takes a current news article (not an opinion column/editorial, op-ed) from a major US newspaper that the applicant views as biased reporting/journalism, and describe in 500 words or more why the article is biased and how it should be changed. Applicants must be US citizens.
