This competition is open to any high school students from 13 to 18 years of age at the time of essay submission, and to undergraduate students of any age who are currently enrolled full-time at a college or university. Those over the age of 22 must explain the situation that places them at such an institution. Non-US citizens are eligible to apply; there is no restriction on nationality. To apply, applicants must submit an essay on a given topic: for high school students - "Are we alone in the universe? Or are there other life and intelligence beyond the solar system?" and for college students - "What is the origin of the complexity in the universe?" Winners will be invited to the award ceremony in Philadelphia on October 12-13.
