Scholarship Overview

This competition is for filmmakers with no previous professional experience who are enrolled in degree-granting programs and accredited colleges and universities as full-time students. Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medal awards (which include cash grants of $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000) may be given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in recognition of outstanding achievements in student filmmaking in the following categories: animation, documentary, narrative, and alternative. Applicants must be full-time students at an accredited US college or university and the film must have been made in a teacher-student relationship within the curricular structure of that institution. Entries from domestic applications must be films which were completed after April 1, 2012 and before April 1, 2013. All original entries must be submitted for consideration on DVD-R format (original DVD entries will not be returned). Entry forms must listed the director (but no more than two) most responsible for the creative production of the picture. The Academy does not allow for any hands-on involvement by professionals in key positions such as directors, producers, camera persons, editors, writers, or production sound mixers. Professional actors are exempt from these restrictions. Rules for foreign entries differ; see website for more details.
