This scholarship is for children and surviving, unmarried spouses of persons who died as a result of a compensable work-related accident or illness. Also eligible are persons whose injuries qualify them for lifetime income benefits under Section 408.161 of the Texas Workers' Compensation Act, their spouses and unmarried children. The person's death or injury must have resulted from a compensable injury or illness. Children must be unmarried and be between the ages of 16 and 25, and all persons must meet academic standards set by the Selection Committee. In cases of workplace fatalities, surviving spouses must be unmarried and still be eligible for workers' compensation benefits to be eligible for scholarship consideration. Applicants are encouraged to apply immediately. Scholarships are awarded based on need and other criteria throughout the year as funds are available.
