    Campus Safety

There have been very few incidents of theft and those have been dealt with.

Great for these types of students

    Anyone interested in the arts.

    Bang for the buck

Inexpensive way to get prep classes out of the way for a 4 year college.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria is good food, but the Cafe/bakery that is in the culinary department is the best food available. The cafe is a 5star restaurant.

    Dorm Life

No dorms, off campus living can vary from nice to rat's nest.

    Academic Rigor

A challenge if you look for it and work at it.

    Tips for prospective students

Get the harder classes out of the way first. When you have 2 semesters and only heavy science classes left it can knock you back a semester or two.

    In three sentences

Small but beautiful school. There is something for eveyone. The arts (culinary, theater, music, metal work, ect) are what ARC is known for.

This school is so much different from other schools, there's a place for everybody and there seems to be no drama. The teachers are all extremely helpful, and you'll never come across a staff member without a smile on their face. If you attend American River College, you won't be sorry!

    What to do for fun

I enjoy hanging out with my friends and spending time outside when the weather is right. ARC has plenty of shade and places to study, it is perfect for those who like being outdoors.

    Food and Dining

Food is good, quite affordable but I prefer food from home.

    Dorm Life

    NO DORM LIFE.

    Academic Rigor

ARC has high expectations for success, failing isn't much of an option if you would like to graduate with an A.A or transfer.

    Tips for prospective students

I would suggest for students to definitely stay on track and make sure to follow admission/enrollment dates. Classes fill up very quickly so get it done as soon as possible!

    In three sentences

There is so many resources on campus for students, such as financial aid, tutoring, career planning, and much more. The campus is amazing and so are the students who attend, it is a great environment to learn and have fun.

    Campus Safety

I feel pretty safe here. There are police and security and emergency buttons all over campus. Be careful walking along the creek behind the school where the football fields are, I've heard that one is a little shady. The other creek, however, on the otherside of the campus, is pretty safe.

    Greek Life

    Nope.

    Clubs and Activities

The clubs here are interesting. Funeral Club, Fashion Club, and German Club are the ones I can remember off the top of my head.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for anyone who's an athlete, interested in earning a degree or certificate, and anyone who's looking to start at a community college and eventually transferring to a UC or CSU

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    none that I know of

    Bang for the buck

This community college is extremely affordable and the education here is top notch. To get more out of your money's worth, try to apply for the BOG waiver. If you qualify, your enrollment fees will be waived.

    What to do for fun

There's not much to do here other than maybe join a club here at school. There's also Club Day every month, which is alright.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria food is a little pricey, but sooo good. There's also a Subway and Starbucks, which is pretty great.

    Dorm Life

Since it's a community college, there are no dorms.

    Academic Rigor

I really do feel like I'm getting my money's worth here at ARC. The professors and staff are completely overqualified, knowledgeable, and helpful. The academic programs and events here are outstanding, too.

    Tips for prospective students

    - Try to avoid getting any morning classes, if you can! - Join a club or take a class that seems interesting to you, even if you're not required to. - The library and student centers are great for studying and socializing - Leave for school early; finding a parking spot in any parking lot here can be a hassle

    In three sentences

American River College is a super laid-back community college, in my opinion, with the exception of having student responsibilities. The professors really are the best and want their students to succeed. There's something for everyone here.

    What to do for fun

ARC seems to do a lot of days in the quad for its students to get in touch with clubs and activities going on. In my experience the majority of my classes has been in the wee mornings or late at night so I have little experience hanging around the campus for fun after class is out. They do have very good sports however if you have the time to take one up!

    Food and Dining

Of all the Los Rios Colleges ARC has the widest variety and best selection (for community college)! Not only is there a Starbucks on campus but also a Subway; the campus also has its own salad bar, sandwich shop, burger place, knock-off mongolian, etc. Also caters to the breakfast crowd with muffins, bagels, oatmeal, and some sort of coffee machine I have yet to get up the courage to try out!

    Dorm Life

I am unsure whether to give 5 or 0 stars seeing as living on campus is not an option at ARC. However they do have some nice apartments in the surrounding area, however I am told the ones directly off campus aren't always the safest...

    Academic Rigor

The classes I have taken at ARC are a step above; I have also attended some classes at the FLC campus and the SCC campus but my hardest have always been attended at ARC. The teachers I have come across have always been fair and have had more than adequate office hours. The science department also offers free tutoring that coincides with the teachings of the science classes (Beacon).

    Tips for prospective students

Print a map of the school prior to the first day, the parking situation is a little weird and at times very unsuitable. Know where your classes are! And get involved... there are plenty of campus clubs that can help you get the internships, letters of rec, etc. you need! All you need to do in the meantime is make those relationships and ask.

    In three sentences

American River College is a well established community college in the Los Rios District with many amenities to offer to current and prospective students. There are a wide range of classes available for students from Greek to welding to student government! ARC has a beautiful campus and has been around for a good amount of time making it a shiny star in the pond that is the community college system.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The library has a balcony on the top floor that overlooks the campus and has tables that can be very calming when trying to study.

    What to do for fun

Joining club and trying out for sports are very fun and helps with making great friends with common interests.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining is not free but is made with amazing quality. The have everything from pizza to Chinese food. Its amazing food and not that expensive.

    Dorm Life

    There are no dorms.

    Academic Rigor

The academics there are very good. They have many classes for any time of future paths. Also everyone at American River College is looking out for your best interest and helps pushes you to academic excellence.

    Tips for prospective students

For incoming students make sure you have an open mind in every classrooms. Also look into joining clubs which can help in make friends. Last but not least ask the teachers for help when needed because many of the professors are very friendly.

    In three sentences

This school is very welcoming. It is also contains many useful resources for anyone's educational or career paths. The campus is very beautiful.

    Campus Safety

At almost every corner in the parking structure there is a police calling button. Just don't wander off campus at night.

    Bang for the buck

Community college, so obviously it's cheap and I think it's worth it.

    What to do for fun

Not much is in the immediate area, but it is like two blocks from the freeway so you can easily hop on and go anywhere downtown or uptown for fun.

    Food and Dining

    Again, doesn't apply to me.

    Dorm Life

I don't currently live in a dorm so I can't really say anything.

    Academic Rigor

As stated before, it's a hit and miss. But as long as you check your professor's rating before signing up, you should be fine.

    Tips for prospective students

Talk to your counselors every semester, and register early before classes are full. Check the site ratemyprofessor.com BEFORE signing up for classes to see how the teacher is.

    In three sentences

The teachers are a hit and miss, but that's to be expected with community college. I've had some of the best teachers, and some of the worst. However, it's incredibly cheap, and the overall education is adequate.

Campus police post all incidents reported. Usually you will find the suspect gets away which does not make you feel very safe. My students with night classes walk together to the cars or bus stops.

    Greek Life

    unsure

    Clubs and Activities

Mesa, Puente, and EOPS are three groups I would recommend.

Great for these types of students

Diverse, open minded, fun loving, studious, and goal-oriented.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    none

    Bang for the buck

fast food locations located nearby. McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell nearby in addition to a 99 cents store.

    What to do for fun

The campus is beautiful, you can lay out on the grass, some people slackline or throw footballs around. Others go to one of the nearby gyms. Depends on what you and your friends decide.

    Food and Dining

Food is pricy, but tasty. Lots to choose from.

    Dorm Life

    no dorms

    Academic Rigor

Very challenging if you want to learn and grow. There are so many classes that there truly is something for everyone.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early for financial aid and fee waivers, purchase books as soon as possible, use office hours to build relationship with professor, enroll in either the RAD or WAC programs, take lots of notes, use google docs for saving and sharing notes.

    In three sentences

Easy going students and staff. Challenging if you truly want to grow as a student. Extremely helpful in doing everything possible to help a college student succeed.

    What to do for fun

Bowling alley, shooting range, and movies not far from school.

    Food and Dining

Starbucks, Subway and pizza? Yes please! and still close to fast food restaurants.

    Dorm Life

    No dorms here.

    Academic Rigor

I know that many students receive help from the teachers when experiencing difficult times outside of school and with the school work, the school's faculty takes care of and nurtures its students.

    Tips for prospective students

Enjoy your time here and plan ahead so you can transfer to the school you want by taking the right courses.

    In three sentences

American River College is definitely a growing and diverse school. I see that my tuition is being put to good use by the improvements and additions being done to the school and they frequently hire students to work as student help. The amount of resources provided seems endless and reliable as well.

Very safe campus. Nurses on the campus are very nice and helpful and the campus police is always around.

    Clubs and Activities

    Wouldn't know

Great for these types of students

Great for students interested in music, music business, and music production. Great facilities including two recording studios with high end industry equipment and a performance theatre with recording capabilities. Also great for the culinary arts, especially since they are completing the new building with a larger cafe and more facilities/ lab kitchens for the culinary program. They're even putting in a candy lab for chocolates.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I just go to my classes and hang out in the library or cafeteria.

    Bang for the buck

Very affordable, especially if you qualify for the BOG waiver.

    What to do for fun

The music events in the Theatre can be good, mainly the Latin jazz shows and orchestral performances.

    Food and Dining

Large cafeteria with a Starbuck's is a plus, the long lines....not so much. There's also a cafe ran by the culinary staff/students which is pretty good.

    Dorm Life

    Wouldn't know.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes can be very demanding and some fairly easy as long as you keep up with the work and reading.

    Tips for prospective students

Some classes can be tough to get into, get on the wait list and show up anyways. There is still a chance you can get in. Sometimes students tend to drop their classes during break or not show up the first day, giving you a greater chance to get in. I've gotten into four classes by just showing up. I've also seen students who were not on the wait list get in to a class. If you need the class there's know reason why you shouldn't try. Also, it always helps to see a counselor for advice but I would recommend seeing more then one counselor and speaking with teachers about your classes and what classes are needed/recommended for your desired degree. The more info you get, the more you'll know you've made the right choices on what classes to take.

    In three sentences

For a community college, ARC has the best facilities available for both music performance and the recording arts. ARC is a great college to attend for it's affordability and quality of instructor. Great teachers but counselors can be a little confusing and misleading.

    Campus Safety

There are campus security buttons throughout campus, making contacting security very simple. There is a security building on campus, and they are excellent at sending out notices, putting up flyers, emailing or texting students if there are any issues to be aware of on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There are tons of great clubs on campus! You can visit the Student Resource Center for a list of them all.

Great for these types of students

American River College is great for laid back students who may not be ready for the CSU or UC life. If you feel like you need one more stepping stone to a University or State school, this is the place to go. Those students who also need to work, ARC is great because of how inexpensive it is. Why not work towards your two-year degree, save money, then be able to help curb costs of a 4-year school by being able to pay part of it? If you are undecided about whether college is meant for you, choose ARC. With its affordability, you can feel out what majors you like or even if school is right for you without going bankrupt.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There aren't any traditions I can think of, but there are regularly guest speakers that rent out a room to have a discussion in. You can find information about who and what in the Sciences building (Davies Hall) and there are usually enough scheduled that you are guaranteed to catch a few throughout your semesters.

    Bang for the buck

Community college is exponentially cheaper than CSU or UC. With course work that can lead you directly to the more expensive schools later on, it is definitely worth the money to start out at American River College. With all the new developments they made (a new Student Center and a refurbished Library and they are working on refurbishing the Theatre), it's a great looking school without having to pay extra for the good view.

    What to do for fun

American River College's football team is worth seeing. If you want fun in the general area, Sacramento through Tahoe is rich in history and outdoor activities. On campus, there are regular information booths offering great deals on gyms, there are great college and community days to attend, and there is a very nice theatre with regular productions.

    Food and Dining

Last year a new Student Center was built that has a full cafeteria with many food options (including Starbucks and Subway), microwaves, and a huge amount of seating options. Outlets are plentiful in the Center as well.

    Dorm Life

There are apartments nearby that offer great rates for students and they are well maintained with little to no issues. Parking is enforced, so follow the signs.

    Academic Rigor

As a community college, American River College is a great place to get a foothold of what CSUs and UCs may offer. The coursework and expectations are higher than high school, but again, it's a stepping stone to the greater universities. A wonderful place to be for a nervous high school graduate.

    Tips for prospective students

It's said often, but with good reason: meet with your counselor regularly! Let them guide you through the requirements and check in with them along the way to make sure you are on the right path. The best tip of all is to be open, willing to listen and to talk. American River College is a great stepping stone to a CSU or UC, and the more intimate class settings are a perfect place for you to break out of your shell and make friends, and to really begin to get into the groove of college life.

    In three sentences

American River College is made up of professors and personnel who care very deeply about education. There is a great breadth of degrees and certificates to work towards at ARC, and there are counselors who will help guide you through your choices. Never before have I been at a school that felt so welcoming and familiar.

    What to do for fun

The Kaneko gallery always has interesting art work from students, faculty, and local artists, not only hanging in the gallery, but around campus, if you are interested in art it is free and fantastic collections that show there.

    Food and Dining

I have not enjoyed any of the cusine that the cafeteria has to offer, although I did have the pleasure of enjoying a vegetarian pizza from the Oak Cafe, where the culinary students prepare and serve the food and it was quite a pleasant experience.

    Dorm Life

I have no experience with the dorms

    Academic Rigor

As a returning student from a 9 year hiatus, I found that even the elective classes to be academically challenging, requiring proper academically sourced essays for a simple dance class.

    Tips for prospective students

Take the time and meet a counselor, they really are there to help, and will aid in your journey and not waste any of your time.

    In three sentences

American River College is an evolving campus, with constant renovations aesthetically as well as expansions of student learning centers and programs to motivate potential and current students. I have returned to ARC to begin a second career, as well I have watched my younger sister immerse herself on the path to her first, and the counselors and student services have been equally beneficial to the success of the both of us.

    Bang for the buck

I feel as if I have received a great 2 year education at community college unit prices.

    What to do for fun

This is a friendly and active campus. Get involved in a club or group!

    Food and Dining

Starbucks on campus is a major plus. Lots of dining options at a fair price on campus.

    Dorm Life

No dorms at ARC. Lots of apartment housing in surrounding neighborhoods.

    Academic Rigor

Fair teachers and well rounded coursework. Do your required reading and assignments and you will be fine. Teachers want to see you succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay on top of your required coursework and meet frequently with counselors. They are there to help you! Meet students in your classes; study groups are a great way to make friends but also ensure everyone understands the material and aces the course.

    In three sentences

My time at American River College has been truly fulfilling. The counselors here and professor have been successful in both preparing me for transfer and giving me a well-rounded education. I highly recommend this junior college campus.

    Campus Safety

Since there has been a rise in crime near the school, there has been much more of a police presence on campus. I never feel unsafe walking by myself.

    Bang for the buck

It can be a little expensive, but it's still cheaper than a four year university. If you pick the right professor than you can learn far more than you expected.

    What to do for fun

For fun I take the ballroom dance class. There are many theater productions and orchestra performances throughout the semester.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria is average. They're breakfast foods are the best. But the Oak Cafe, which is run by the culinary students, is beyond delicious. The actual restaurant has a long reservation list, but the cafe for the pre made foods is great.

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms on campus, but I know that they have listings of apartments near by on their website.

    Academic Rigor

From what I have observed, if students want to be pushed they can be, but I know a ton of students who just try to get by and do fine.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are a prospective student, I would say to not be dead set on certain classes. Since it is a large school classes fill up quickly and it can be harder for incoming students. If you are able to be flexible than you will cut down on a lot of stress.

    In three sentences

American River College is for those who love and seek diversity. There are many great professors here that have taught me more than just textbook material. I enjoy and look forward to each new semester.

    What to do for fun

There are lots of sports going year-round and there is a nice football stadium/track. Plus there are lots of clubs catering to a wide array of interests. Even some classes are mainly for fun, like Archery.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria has recently been rebuilt and expanded, so it is much nicer. there are a lot of options including a Subway and Starbucks :)

    Dorm Life

No dorms, but a lot of off-campus housing is available. nearby.

    Academic Rigor

This really depends on what classes you take. General education classes are generally easier, and science classes are usually harder.

    Tips for prospective students

What you get out of ARC is in your own hands. If you are an incoming highschooler, be prepared to have a lot more responsibility for your education. You'll need to stay on top of registration deadlines and choosing classes that you need for your own educational goals. The counseling department is very busy and severely understaffed, not to mention that they don't necessarily know/give the best advice on classes you need to take. Be prepared to do your own research (depending on what school you're transferring to or what degree you want, etc.) and don't take their advice to be foolproof.

    In three sentences

It is a fine school for accomplishing a short-term educational goal (getting an AA, general education for transfer, etc). Do not get stuck here for years and years; have a concrete goal. There are some cool programs--both academic and extracurricular--you should take advantage of.

    Campus Safety

There has been some reports lately of assaults on and off campus. It's not very frequent, but it does happen once or twice a semester I'd say. I don't know how that compares with other campuses.

    Bang for the buck

Even though prices have risen in recent years, then education you get here is well worth the small cost of tuition and books.

    What to do for fun

There's lots of clubs on campus so go to the student development center for information and get involved.

    Food and Dining

They recently finished a brand new student center with a nice cafeteria.

    Dorm Life

It's a community college - not much dorm life here. :P

    Academic Rigor

For a community college, the classes are definitely challenging. Especially the science department - many students who have attended ARC and UC colleges such as UC Davis say ARC has more challenging courses.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply and get your orientation complete. Register for your classes on THE FIRST DAY/HOUR that your slot opens up. Classes fill up extremely fast and the drop rate at this college is lower than most so many teachers do not allow more than a few students to be added from wait lists.

    In three sentences

Overall this is a good campus. The strong departments here are Science and Arts/Humanities. It's a very crowded community college, so competition for classes is tough, especially with all the budget cuts.

    Campus Safety

The campus informs students of any safety problem that may have occurred recently and I see securities guards on campus every day. There are still the occasional problems, but they're few and far between. I'd like to see more precautions taken for emergencies - as in, with the students.

    Greek Life

There are no fraternities or sororities on campus. There is Phi Theta Kappa - an international honors society for students who excel academically (looks great on your transcript).

    Clubs and Activities

A decent amount of clubs available to join, could be more. I'd like to see more activities.

Great for these types of students

People trying to find their way in the world. Take some classes, join some activities - something will jump out within a year or two. Great for people who know what they want, too. There are tons of support services to get you where you want to go.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every club day, the people who are in charge of the clubs get a stage and sound system and have an open mic time, as well as other themed contests (usually to the chagrin of every other person in a half-mile radius).

    Bang for the buck

Pretty good support services (could be a little better, but what can't be improved?): transfer, career help, veteran, scholarships, disabilities, etc.

    What to do for fun

Join clubs! I didn't for quite a while, because it seemed strange to me to have them at a community college and I'm a bit older than most students straight out of high school, but it has helped a lot! Great social environment and it looks great on applications and resumes!

    Food and Dining

Vending machines are the only things open late and have nothing but candy. The cafeteria has really long lines where the really unhealthy food has been made very cheap, and a small salad is $6. Not much in the way for healthy, affordable options. Hard to find tables in the cafeteria. Bring a lunch.

    Dorm Life

Non-existent as far as I know.

    Academic Rigor

Most rigorous (doesn't mean that you'll fall behind) of the CCs I've attended.

    Tips for prospective students

Get to school early - parking is pretty bad. Make sure that you have more than ten minutes between classes, as the bathrooms get packed. Bring a lunch if you intend to eat during lunch time, because the lines get bad at that time. The Starbucks line is always long and will take around half an hour if you're lucky. The lunch cart is a bit better, try to find it around campus. Get involved with clubs and societies!! It will super help. There are a lot of smokers (a lot) all over campus - try to avoid the worst areas. Check out your professors on Ratemyprofessor.com first. Trying to find a computer in the library to use is tough. Again - there are too many students for this school.

    In three sentences

American River College has a decent amount of classes, a career fair, and a thriving student body - many of whom are active in clubs, societies, or sports. A large diversity is present in the student body, and there is a great integration of different types of people in each class. Most professors are very nice, helpful, and want you to succeed, though a greater diversity of classes (and parking) would be preferable.

This Junior College is pretty overcrowded, good luck on finding parking or getting into your 1st choice schedule! Most of the instructors are committed to teaching their students, but a few need to retire already. This place is a decent stepping stone until you can transfer to the four-year of your choice.

If you are interested in theatre, take Kathy Burleson for Stagecraft and makeup, and make sure to take costume design.

    In three sentences

This school has the best theatre program around, with the best theatre teachers I've ever come across. The staff at the school aren't always on top of things and its hard to get straight answers to important questions. Many improvements such as a new parking garage and the student center makes American River College an exciting and convenient school to attend. I've wasted gas looking for parking for an hour during my fall 2012 semester before the garage was built and the student center includes a cafeteria; however, food is quite expensive for the quantity of food.

    Food and Dining

Food's horrible. Even the stores that they brought in from outside [like Starbucks and Subway] seem to have food that's not made as well as places off campus would make it. And don't even get me started on the regular food that has always been on campus..just horrible. Mostly unhealthy, and the stuff that is healthy [they have a salad bar] is too expensive for what it is and not even made right. So basically if you're starving and don't have time to go off-campus, go ahead and eat there..but I warned you.

    Academic Rigor

Honestly, I would say it's about as easy as high school. But then again, I was in all honors classes in hs. Some people do think it's hard, I guess. In my opinion, the general ed is a joke. The students don't care about it and some of the teachers have become so jaded that they don't try to make them care. The more major-specific classes are a bit tougher, but that just might be because I really cared to do well in them [I'm a graphic design major, so I had to do lots of lengthy projects that I chose to spend more time on because I wanted them to be the best I can do]. If you don't care, of course you're just going to cruise through it with mediocre work and get mediocre grades..it might be easy, but it will definitely not help you in the long run.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply and send in all your info ASAP..the sooner you officially tell them you'll be going there, the sooner your signup date for classes will be. Signup dates will be super important for you, especially the first year because there are so many people going there that there are always waitlists if you wait too long to sign up, especially for the classes everyone needs to take [general ed]. So you gotta take what you can get, really. Just make sure they're the classes you actually need and you're not wasting your time..you should check in with a counselor at least every year. I found that even if I thought I knew what I was doing, I find out new things when I go to the counselor..so try not to miss anything.

    In three sentences

If you are motivated and actually interested in your studies, you will make some great connections with the teachers there, and make some great friends along the way. If you're just going to not care and get horrible grades and just cruise through it, it will be a waste of time. Campus has improved over the years, so it's more enjoyable to be there nowadays..just make sure you apply yourself and don't get distracted.

We have a strong foundation here.

    Bang for the buck

Teachers are always in their office hours and offer extra credit for those willing to help themselves. The teachers are passionate and anyone who has been in school knows a teacher makes the class. Most professors are willing to meet outside of class or their office hours and are very accommodating towards students. My Calculus professor at the moment meets me 10 minutes before class to answer any homework questions I might have! How amazing is that!?

    What to do for fun

The teacher sincerely responded, I am preparing these students to be at the top of their class at a 4 year university.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not see a counselor! Most of them do not know what they are talking about and will make you take unnecessary classes. I love the school but it is by far their biggest fault. The best thing to do is to take a few classes, get secure in your major and then look up the requirements to transfer or obtain your associates using the requirements as your ed plan.

Starbucks. The newly built cafeteria is awesome and there's a Subway.

    Dorm Life

They don't have dorms. I'm pretty sure.

    Academic Rigor

It really depends on the classes that you take, how well you participate in them, and the professors that you are given.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared. Be serious. Get everything turned in on time. Make sure you have everything set. It'd be best to have your driver's license or someone who can drive you to school because taking a bus is horrible and takes way too long sometimes.

    In three sentences

ARC is a very nice community college. Everyone is very friendly. The classes offered and professors are awesome.

    Campus Safety

I took a night class during my second semester and wasn't really looking forward to the long, dark walk back to my car at 10pm, but thankfully AR implements a shuttle service to get people to their cars safely. There are also security guards and a police station on campus, and lots of street lights in the more isolated areas so that you never feel like you're the next victim in a slasher flick.

    Greek Life

No Greek life, except maybe some Greek students who go there.

    Clubs and Activities

Like I said, there's a huge rush of club sign ups at the start of the fall semester, I highly recommend checking it out.

Great for these types of students

Great for students fresh out of high school (or still in high school, if you are interested in summer classes) and older, returning adult students too! There was always a huge variety in the students in my classes; just about anyone could go here and fit in I think.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    None that I'm aware of.

    Bang for the buck

Prices are going up for classes every year, it sucks but it's true. Thankfully financial aid is widely available to most students and if you end up needing to drop some classes, you can get a refund if you drop soon enough.

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of clubs that have sign ups at the beginning of the semester, and all the people are super friendly! Other than that, the school is near a fair amount of coffee shops and similar hang out spots, but nothing major.

    Food and Dining

Definitely above average, but not the greatest I've ever had. The food is varied (everything from pizza and sandwiches to surprisingly tasty Mexican food) and relatively cheap, but if you don't find it to your tastes, there are some great fast food places and restaurants near the school.

    Dorm Life

No dorms, since it's a community college. Though the third floor of the library is great for sleeping, if you really need to grab a nap at school.

    Academic Rigor

The homework load is pretty basic; I think they work students hard enough to make sure they really understand the material, but it's not unbearable. Most classes (the ones I took, anyway) have a good balance of lectures and hands-on projects, so the work never feels too monotonous and you get a really good handle on the basics of the lessons without even trying!

    Tips for prospective students

Make counseling appointments early and often! The counselors really are great at helping out new and current students with any questions/concerns they might have, but there are A LOT of people vying for appointment spots, so be sure to call ahead, don't just expect to walk in and see someone (not without a 3 hour wait, anyway)! Another side-effect of being such a large and busy school, parking can be kind of a pain. Be SURE to get a parking permit if you plan on driving and don't turn your nose up at all the little side streets around the school. Unless you want to get to school an hour early, sometimes you may have to park a ways away on a side street. Though I understand that they're building a new parking structure, I would take a tour of the surrounding area and scope out spots just in case.

    In three sentences

A great community college in the Sacramento area that is constantly improving it's campus to ensure that students have the best resources available! It has a wide variety of classes and specialty programs for just about any career a student could be interested in pursuing, and very helpful counselors to help you decide which of those career paths are right for you. One of the best community colleges in the area; there's a reason half my high school went there!

The campus police are too busy giving parking tickets. I hardly see them patrolling around especially late at night.

    Greek Life

MESA...tha'ts the geekiest club I can think of. I think it stands for math, engineering, science and something else. But it's great club if you need tutoring in these areas.

    What to do for fun

I like to sleep and get caught up on movies, tv shows and life. I like get together and going to Disneyland.

    Food and Dining

The student center is the place to be. It's cozy and they have the best selection of venders, for instance, Starbucks and Subway. You can't go wrong.

    Dorm Life

I live in an apartment. They don't' have dorms. But I see postings for roommates here and there.

    Academic Rigor

So, far I had the best instructors the school has to offer. Most of my professors are from Universities so I'm a getting a bang for my buck at community college level.

    Tips for prospective students

Use all the resources on campus as much as to your advantage. They are there to help and push you to be successful no matter what situation you are in.

    In three sentences

It's a beautiful campus. I love the staff at the library and the Learning Resource center. Plus, the bookstore is the bomb.

Most of my classes were challenging and fulfilling especially my Honors courses.

    Tips for prospective students

Try your best when taking the English assessment test as this will be the deciding factor as to whether you will be eligible to enroll in classes in the Honors Program. Take any of Professor Wrightson's classes. He teaches history: Western Civ and is a tough grader but an awesome educator.

ARC is a fantastic community college in Sacramento. It has an awesome Honors programs which allows students in the program to enroll in a wide range of classes with no more than twenty students per class. Great for these types of students

New college students, returning students, and people looking to upgrade current skills.

    Food and Dining

The Student Center was just completed and it's wonderful. In addition to the Starbucks and Subway, the hot cafe has a revolving menu ranging from Asian to Country, a salad bar, pizza, and a grill.

    Dorm Life

    No Dorms.

    Academic Rigor

For me, the curriculum was a bit lower than I wanted. I started taking honors classes for the challenge. Most high school grads and people returning for refreshers should find the curriculum workable.

    Tips for prospective students

Get your aid in order before you stop in. Be willing to be flexible not only with classes but staff and teachers as well.

    In three sentences

There are sometimes issues with security in the parking lots that I have heard about. There is campus police located right on the campus, though. I have personally never had any issues.

    Clubs and Activities

There are sports, clubs, and activities for everyone to enjoy! The school's Student Government program is pretty big around campus.

Great for these types of students

ARC is great because they offer classes different times and days, so even if you work or have other obligations you always find a class in your time-frame. People around campus vary in age from high school students taking supplementary classes to people in their 80s!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Locations for things on campus are changing with all of the new construction of great new buildings and parking. My favorite place to visit is the new library. It is HUGE and everything is pretty high-tech, especially for a community college!

    Bang for the buck

I attended UCSB for a while, but at $7,000+ for tuition, I decided that ARC was a much better way for me to spend my money! Tuition for a full-time student (in state) runs between $300-$600 per semester. Professors are very intelligent people and often used to be High School teachers.

    What to do for fun

The drama department always has something going on. There are also many sports teams (some of which are very good!). If you want off-campus recreation, Downtown Sacramento is only about 15 minutes away. Sacramento offers many restaraunts, bars, parks, rivers, gold courses, shopping malls (Yes, more than one), and many other things to spend free time not spent studying.

    Food and Dining

Food includes chains like Starbucks and Subway, as well as little food counters such as pizza, mexican food, sandwiches, a coffee cart, etc. The burritos from the mexican food place are delicious!

    Academic Rigor

The General Ed classes are not super difficult and professors tend to be understanding and care about their students.

    Tips for prospective students

If you need financial aid, try applying for the BOGW fee waiver!

    In three sentences

The recent updates to the campus (including but not limited to: a parking structure, a library, and a student center complete with Starbucks) are absolutely beautiful! Most of the class sizes are small, so getting one-on-one attention from professors is pretty easy but this can make getting into classes more difficult. There are a lot of middle-aged people who come for night classes, but day classes are college-age people for the most part.

I recommend students to take advantage of all the help that the school offers. Students should also come to class on time, and sit at the front of class in order to participate and excel in the course. Students should also pack their own lunch because lunch at school is too expensive.

    In three sentences

American River has lots of resources for a community college. It also has friendly people and people who are fresh out of high-school. American River college has many helpful people, but one thing I really don't like about it is the impacted smokers in the campus.

    Academic Rigor

The Professors here are challenging. You must earn all of your units with your own hard work and dedication.

    Food and Dining

The culinary program here shines with the cafe and cafeteria programs. Good eats on campus for cheap!

    Tips for prospective students

Plan your time accordingly and if school isn't your true priority, get out and make room for someone who's committed- there's not enough spaces for people who aren't really into being here. Make sure you are online-savvy since classes are heavy into the D2L system, even if they are on-ground classes!

    In three sentences

Lucky to have one of two programs for funeral services in the state of California. Hopefully, they will buck the trend and continue to offer more on-ground classes instead of moving things to online only. Teacher quality has varied both in and out of the program, which may be a reflection of the economy more than the overall quality of the school itself.

    Food and Dining

ARC offers several different food stands and cafes around campus for a quick bite to eat or drink. The recently opened student center sports a cafeteria with a subway, fast food, and a Starbucks coffee.

    Dorm Life

No access to student dorms on or off campus. Several apartment complexes offer student housing at discounted rates for full-time students.

    Academic Rigor

The classes can be tough if you do not study or ask questions to things you do not understand. There is a good system in place that does not let students take classes that they may not be able to handle, but there are classes that will help you get to where you need to be. Mostly it comes down to the student taking his or her own responsibility for their education.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to all of your classes. Get books and study materials for classes before the semester begins. Take notes in class, ask questions, and not only study the material, but understand it as well. Do not waste time by taking fun classes; get serious about your education and create goals for yourself.

Be sure to stay informed of the crime roster. Though, this is a good school to attend, with good people, there are still incidents that are not good. The police are there to help, and they actually have a police office right there on campus. Be sure not to go off campus with anyone unless you really know the person, I mean reall know them.

    Clubs and Activities

I have been thinking of joining the Hort Club. I like reading about the different things they do around our area.

Great for these types of students

Great for pretty much any type of student, as long as you are truly trying to acheive your goals. If you're not ready to be serious about your education, then this school is not for you.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I absolutely love the Horticulture area at the back of the campus. There are grapevines, different trees and plants, and a couple places to sit and just hang out. It's nice and serene.

    Bang for the buck

The bookstore is very convenient, and they do sell almost everything you will need for your classes, however it is very expensive there. It is best to either look elsewhere or to look at possibly buying a used book there. You can also sell your books back if they are in good condition when you are done with them.

    What to do for fun

I am sure there are a lot of fun activities at American River College, yet, I am only there to obtain my degree and move on from there.

    Food and Dining

There is a good Subway sandwich shop there on the campus, and there is a cafeterria being built at the moment.

    Dorm Life

    No dorms. Not yet.

    Academic Rigor

Academically, I can only speak of my own experience. In highschool I always struggled and had trouble passing my classes. There were not any programs that could help me get ahead, and I caved in on myself a lot. At American River College, all my professors have used different teaching techniques that work for me. I have never been this successful in school until I came to American River College. I love their DSPS program for students with disabilities. This program allows me to bring a tape recorder to class for the lectures, have a note taker in class with me, and set up appointments to take my exams in a room with no distractions to cause me to lose focus while testing. Taking exams through DSPS also allows me extra time to complete the exams. Because of that, I have been very successful.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure to get in and take the entrance exams. They are only there to help you find the classes that will help you be successful in achieving your goals. Also be sure to have all your financial aid documents completed correctly before the deadline. If you do need financial aid, I recommend that you do NOT use Higher One as your financial institute to take the payments from. There are a lot of fees, and created billing problems with them. I use Wells Fargo myself. Though I have to wait a few days more for the direct deposit, I will not be fee'd to death. Be sure to have a school counselor help you find what is best for you, as far as which classes to start off with.

    In three sentences

American River College has a good DSPS program for students with disabilities. They are also number one in the Los Rios Community College District in Horticulture. American River has tutors who are truly there to help students who are struggling in general education academic classes, especially math.

I have never had an issue but it is in a more sketchy neighbor hood and if you have evening classes make sure you walk out to your car in a group. But during the day I have not seen or heard of anything happening.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs at the school I my self in in at least two of the clubs. They range from Honor Societies that are GPA based to Bible study groups to student versions of professional groups like American Welding Society.

Great for these types of students

This and any Community College is great for working people, parents, returning students. Anyone who doesnt have the time to go full time or is not ready for the full on rigor of a full school schedule.

    Bang for the buck

Since this school is a Community College you are not paying through the noses to attend here. And it is pay per unit instead of pay per semester so it works out for many who have to work they can take night classes. But I would say as a whole I think that American River College has great programs and is one of the best in the area for what you have to pay to get in.

    What to do for fun

There is a dirt path that goes along the south side of the campus and down along a small creek (more of a runoff) that you can go on walks or go running along.

    Food and Dining

Well this is hard for me cause I am partial to Chipotle. But I would say that while there is not much on campus if you go off campus within a block or two there are many different restaurants, including Chipotle.

    Academic Rigor

There are different types of classes, introductory classes and college prep classes. And so there are different levels of difficulty as well. The basic classes are fairly easy but as you get into the upper division classes in any area or discipline they do start having a bunch more homework and much more study is needed.

    Tips for prospective students

In the first two to three weeks plan on getting to school at least a half hour before your class to look for parking which can be a crazy nightmare. Sign up as soon as you are allowed to dont wait around till the last minute.

    In three sentences

Great Science and Technical Departments, with knowledgeable teachers and staff. Library is a great place to study with the free wifi and semi quiet study areas. The only problems I have had is with parking.

    Dorm Life

    Academic Rigor

Just because it is a community college doesn't mean that you will receive a lower standard education... In fact community college is one of our last democratic privileges and many of the professor will teach at UC level; they are sometimes more committed than the students!

    Tips for prospective students

Take the assessment tests and if it has been a while since you have been to school; sign up for a one-step lower English and Math class. Just because you test into a class doesn't mean you belong there. Set yourself up for success.

    In three sentences

    Food and Dining

The lack of a cafeteria makes it very difficult for students to eat because there are only a few venues in the campus for students to buy food. And there are also not enough tables and seats that students can use to eat their lunches with.

    Dorm Life

There is no dorm in ARC.

    Academic Rigor

I believe only some of the classes in ARC actually challenge the students' ability to ingest information and actually learn. So far, most classes I have taken were not as challenging as I had thought they were going to be.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students should do a little reconnaissance of the school prior to the first day to avoid any confusion as to where their classes are located. Early classes should also be considered by new students to avoid the stressful parking situations that can occur after 8 am.

    In three sentences

I believe American River College has a great atmosphere. But I also think it could use better counselors that can assist every student's needs, including possible transfers to out-of-state universities.

    Campus Safety

There are emergency sheriff telephone things all over campus. The big blue pillars with those blue lights on top. There is usually a cop on campus as well. I never ran into any problems and didn't really hear of any last semester. I might be oblivious, but personally, I feel pretty safe on campus, as did most of the people I got to know in each class.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a variety of clubs and activities. There are some clubs though that aren't very active because they don't have many members.

    Bang for the buck

While it's a decent place to go, the costs can add up very quickly. How much you spend will also depend on which classes you are taking. Last semester I took three classes, and spent about $200 on books. This semester I am taking four classes, and will be spending over $700 for textbooks. I'm buying used books. Check Amazon and Ebay! I've heard people sell textbooks on craigslist too! This is where financial aid comes in handy.

    What to do for fun

Join clubs. There is a club rush week at the beginning of each semester. Do the extra activities professors offer - it's better than sitting at home during the week and a lot of the time they will offer extra credit for going. Don't fill up your schedule with only online classes if you can help it. Get out there and take that 90 minute class! You might make some friends in the process.

    Food and Dining

I haven't personally eaten anything offered here. There is a bit of variety in the places you can eat, although I've been told it can be expensive.

    Dorm Life

I'm pretty sure there aren't any dorms? The people are nice though.

    Academic Rigor

Classes can be challenging. Try not to take a class just because you want so many units. The BS class you take could end up being the hardest one you have that semester.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for all the financial aid that you can. Just because its a community college, does not mean it is going to be super cheap. It will cost you less than a university, but still be prepared. Also, make sure you're going to have enough time during the week to do all of your homework and to study. There is a planner on the website that can be quite helpful for planning out times for classes, study sessions, work and more for your week. Use every resource available to your advantage.

    In three sentences

All in all, it's a decent school. AR is a good place for new college students and those returning after a prolonged absence. It has lots of different professors, many different class offerings, and a large amount of students.

The food is acceptable. If you're looking for something quick to eat on the way to class, the dining cart outside of Davies Hall is the way to go!

    Dorm Life

Since American River college is a community college there are no dorms on campus. There are apartments in the surrounding area that are acceptable.

    Academic Rigor

I've been taking classes at American River College since I was a sophomore in high school. The challenges presented in all academic courses at American River are not easy to overcome, but they are the types of challenges that allow students to gain great knowledge and further their life skills.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students need to make sure all of their documents are filled out and turned in on time. They also need to enroll in classes as soon as the option is available to them. Earlier enrollment means a better chance of getting into the desired classes.

    In three sentences

American River College is an excellent academic choice for students who wish to achieve their educational goals and need a place to start. American River always has plenty to offer it's students and makes sure they are on the right track. A good education at a good price is something that should not be turned down.

    Campus police on campus!

    Greek Life

    No fraternities to choose from.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of clubs to choose from!

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of campus activities such as student government and a variety of clubs to participate.

    Food and Dining

The food is o.k yet a bit expensive!

    Dorm Life

This is a community college which does not offer dorm life.

    Academic Rigor

    This college rocks!

    Tips for prospective students

Take advatage of all the resources on campus! Some of them would be an orientation for beginning students, meeting with a councilor each semester to make sure a student is on track as far as making sure one is taking the required classes for a student's major, and taking courses to help students excel at American River College.

    In three sentences

It is a great stepping stone before attending a college of choice! Plenty of resources for the college student such as what the college refers to WAC. A facility to be able to write an effective essay for English classes.

    What to do for fun

Downtown Sacramento is only about 20 minutes away and there is a bunch of fun things to do there!

    Food and Dining

there is a good selection of food in the cafeteria. There is also a lot of fast food places and a few little restaurants to eat at very close by.

    Academic Rigor

So far the teachers I've had have been really great and helpful. They give their students all the tools needed to be successful.

    Tips for prospective students

I would just make sure to get to know the campus before your first day of classes or (if you're anything like me) you will get lost and be late to your classes. Make sure to do all of your homework and ask questions when you need to.

    In three sentences

A nice environment. Great Teachers. A good selection of food in the cafeteria.

I always feel safe on campus. Last semester I had an evening class between 7-9 pm and I always felt safe walking on campus.

Great for these types of students

it's great if you pass your general education units if you are planning to transfer to a four-year university.

    Bang for the buck

I wish the campus was smoke free campus, because the campus is too small and we only have some small places to hang out and smokers ruin it.

    What to do for fun

Clubs are not very active and you might not find many fun things to do on this campus.

    Tips for prospective students

It's a good college to start your education if you want to pass your general ed units.

    In three sentences

The campus is small and classes get full very soon. The instructors are good and knowledgeable. The library has only 2 copies of the required books and in some cases it doesn't have the book.

The student store on campus is pretty bad. Their prices for their books is a little off the chain. If you buy books, buy it online through Amazon or something like that.

    Food and Dining

The food is great here and they are also building a near cafe area for the students and faculty. It should be done for the Fall 2012 semester.

    Dorm Life

Sadly there aren't any dorms at American River College.

    Academic Rigor

Most professors at American River College are more than willing to help, so all you have to do is ask.

    Tips for prospective students

Use all the resources that are available at the school and you should be just fine.

ARC has their own police station on campus as well as security that routinely patrols around classes and parking lots.

    Greek Life

There is the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society but no fraternities in the traditional sense.

    Clubs and Activities

The clubs are very active on campus. There are multiple days year round that are dedicated solely to promote clubs on campus. There are a wide variety and starting a new club is easy!

Great for these types of students

ARC is ideal for students who are hard working and determined but do not have the means to pay for traditional four year universities. It offers a jumping off point for students to explore their options in college before committing.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Because the entire student body commutes to ARC, there is no foundation for traditions to ferment.

    Bang for the buck

This school offers phenomenal opportunities at an amazing price. Fees were recently increased to $36 a unit but a number of financing options are available (Board of Governors Fee Waiver, FAFSA, etc.). Through two years of hard work, students can either transfer to any number of four year universities or complete their AA.

    What to do for fun

There are several sports to chose from as well as an impressive field for other activities. Socializing with the numerous varieties of people that attend ARC gives one a more cultured perspective and a glimpse into the eclectic.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria is in the process of being replaced. In the meantime, there are multiple restaurants on campus and in the surrounding area in addition to the food trucks and vending machines on campus.

    Dorm Life

Because this is a community college there are no dorms. The entire student body commutes from the surrounding area.

    Academic Rigor

The coursework is not terribly rigorous nor is it mundane. The professors here are masters and pHD's in their respective fields and their assignments reflect that. The work can be tedious at times but through perseverance you will succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

Consume yourself in your work and show the teachers that you are committed. In return, they will be willing to work with you; it is easier for the professors to cooperate with you once they know you are willing to work!

    In three sentences

American River College is a seedbed for the aspiring transfer student or those seeking an AA. The professors are as helpful as they are kind and truly seek to meet the needs of their students. The campus is constantly being renovated to accommodate the growing needs of the student body.

The campus isn't too dangerous as long as you keep an eye on your stuff. Also, the night time tends to be a bit more dangerous and you have to be careful, but there is a shuttle at night to take you to your car as to avoid most of that.

To me, the campus does not seem dangerous. It feels quite safe, however if you have a late night class, I would advise you to carry around pepper spray just in case since you never know what can pop out of the bushes.

    Greek Life

The life on campus is quite easy and it is not hard to find where you are looking to go, such as classrooms for classes.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a huge variety of clubs and activities that ARC has offer. Chances are if you have a hobby, someone or a group at ARC might share the same interest.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students who want to go to college and can't afford to, students who are willing to strive for their future goals and students who want to stay close to home for just a couple more years because venturing off to something bigger!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

On campus, everywhere is pretty much the same. My favorite spot is just to sit on the side near the parking lot because even though there are many cars passing by, it is quite peaceful.

    Bang for the buck

For the amount you pay to attend ARC it is a smart choice compared to the high expenses of the 4 year Universities. However, if your like me and want to attend a 4-year it is a smarter choice to complete the general education at a community college first and then complete the classes for my major at the 4-year to save money.

    What to do for fun

Well, college is more stressful than fun but to have some fun, you can walk around and engage in the sports meet they have on campus. There are also varies plays and artwork showed on campus to observe created by the more artistic students. You can also walk around the culinary area to observe some tips on how to cook.

    Food and Dining

There are many places to eat around campus, such as fast food places name McDonald, Burger King, Jack in the Box and even Panda Express. Within the campus there is also a few places to eat when your stomach is growling. In campus you can get some delicious pizza, handmade burritos and even healthy snacks!

    Dorm Life

Unfortunately, being a community college, ARC does not offer dorms. However, if you have a job and are financially stable, you can move out into nearby apartments around Sacramento or otherwise stay at home and save up money until that day you move out.

    Academic Rigor

The academics at ARC depends on the students. If you want to succeed, you must strive for the grade you want because nothing comes easy and must be earned through hard work. There are also many professors here that want you to succeed and will push you to get that grade you want!

    Tips for prospective students

My tip for prospective students is this is the place to go if you are lingering back and forth between multiple majors. Community college is also a smart choice to pick because it can save you a ton of money for similar education and smaller classes sizes, so it is easier to grasp the material in class.

    In three sentences

American River College is very diverse with many individuals both young and old striving to complete the same goal: to achieve a college education for a better future. The campus is quite large being a community college and there are a huge range of classes to pick for your schedule. The atmosphere does not seem to imitating and meeting new faces and learning is quite enjoyable.

We have a shuttle van that will take students to their cars at night which has been proven to be very helpful. There are also emergency phones located through out the campus. Its usually pretty safe and I don't feel uncomfortable walking to my car alone.

    Bang for the buck

Its a community college so of course we are getting a pretty good bang for our buck but book prices always have a tendency to be overpriced with awful buybacks.

    What to do for fun

The school provides many things for enjoyment on campus such as seeing plays, hearing optional attendance lectures and the annual events in the courtyard. They really strive to make their students feel included. And since the school is in between Sacramento and the Roseville area, there are plenty of other things to do when not in school such as shop, go to the movies, and see concerts.

    Food and Dining

The food at this school can definitely be a hit and miss. While some food areas are good, some have low quality and higher prices. At the moment, the school is under construction in some areas, one of them being the cafeteria. Unfortunately due to that, our options have been cut and the wait lines have increased. Before the construction, the food was pretty enjoyable.

    Dorm Life

I've never experienced this so I have no comment.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the classes you take, some may be more difficult that others but one thing remains the same, all of the teachers love what they do. You will have to work hard to prove yourself but at no time will you feel like you have no support. There are many different devices to help you pass each project as well as the class itself.

    Tips for prospective students

Students that plan on attending this school will have the ability to experience college life without any stresses or pressures from the big college. They offer many classes at all different times to help give options to their students. The teachers really love their jobs and it shows in they enthusiasm for wanting you to succeed.

Although the campus tends to be under construction most of the time, the school has some of the most amazing teachers and resources available to its students. Coming from a community with its majority being Caucasians, I enjoyed the huge diversity of different ethnicity's attending the campus. At this school, they really strive for their students to achieve their goals.

All types! Very diverse campus! There are also programs for deaf students and students that need personal attention or extra help. ARC does not discriminate. They give everyone a chance at their education - I believe that is why the campus is so diverse because they do not turn people down.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for the BOG! All of the information is on ARC's website at www.arc.losrios.edu . Click on Quick links and scroll down to Financial Aid and there is a lot of help there. Also, schedule meetings with a counselor to make sure you are taking classes that transfer to a 4-year so you are not wasting time. Teachers usually put books that are required for their class up AT LEAST two weeks before the semester starts. Go to the student bookstore EARLY to rent a book for at least half of the actual price of the book. There are also many websites such as uloop, amazon, chegg, etc. I also highly suggest that everyone goes to their teacher's office hours. They are there every week for the whole semester and get visits from a few of their students the entire semester. It makes a difference when a teacher knows you! And do not be afraid to ask questions, if you are a shy student in class, write your question down so you do not forget and go to your teacher's office hours and ask it. That way everyone wins and they see you are making an effort!

    Bang for the buck

Definitely a money saver! And you're still getting a college education. Some students spend four or more years at a university taking out $10,000+ worth of loans a school year. Most students enter college not knowing where their career path is headed and waste their freshman year lost in that search. Coming to ARC made me know where I wanted to go with my education, and saved me thousands of dollars in loans! There is something called a BOG fee waiver for California Community College students (something university students do not receive). The BOG pays for your classes and depending on a student's financial situation, it may also pay for your books (not including financial aid you will receive). To be a full-time student at ARC, a student must be enrolled in 12 units. The cost of attendance here is 36$/unit. After doing the math, the BOG sounds really good! BUT one must consider that even if a student does not receive the BOG, the cost is WAY cheaper than a university. Students that do not receive the BOG, most likely did not apply.

    Did enjoy being here

I loved it. I got help from my counselor every semester making sure I was taking the right classes and on track. I was a competing athlete and my counselor made sure that I was taking enough units to stay eligible, but not too much to where I was overwhelmed. When I first started at ARC, I slacked off and dropped a lot of my classes and even failed one. I owe it to my counselor that I got back on track and worked my butt off to still receive my AA in two years (:

    Did learn a lot

I have officially finished my time at American River College as of Summer 2011. During my last two years at ARC, I have learned more than I learned my four years in high school and the on year I attended a University. I can honestly say, with no regrets, that I loved this school. I made so many friendships and relationships with my fellow classmates and teachers. There are so many ways students can get help on campus. There are group and individual tutor sessions, classes to help students improve their reading and writing, workshops, research help, etc! There's so much. Any help that any student is looking for for ANY class , I am sure ARC has it or can make it specifically for you!

If you are a student who enjoys variety, in which I mean people, clubs, and sports, this is the school for you. I would definately say that American River College is for the artist. If you love anything that involves creativity, this is the place for you.

    Tips for prospective students

For one, prospective students need to know the class numbers on the doors. They can be extremely confusing at times, so to go to the school ahead of time and look for your class numbers is very highly recommended. As a mater of fact, I would suggest touring the entire campus before your first day of class. That way you won't be confused about where to go, since the hallways can be confusing at first. I would also recommend you sign up for classes at least 3 months ahead of time, and that's the very least. Classes fill up quickly. If there is a class that you absolutely need, and you are number 20 on the wait list, don't be too discouraged. Within a matter of months, a lot of students drop out, and this could possibly give you a spot. So sign up early.

    Bang for the buck

It costs 36 dollars per unit, which compared to any Univeristy, is a bargain. Plus, the school has numerous programs that you can jon in order to get a discount on classes. I get a discount due to my father being a veteran.

    Am enjoying being here

When I first began College, I must say that I was what one would call, well, embarrassed. With a 4.0 G.P.A senior year of high school, I was sure that I would go straight to a University. Due to personal catastrophies going on in my life, visiting campus' was the last thing on my mind. So, with a fear tears which eventually turned into heartless shrugs, I finally exepted the fact that I was going to have to go to a Community College, American River College known the less. I must say now, with a year later, my Generel Ed halfway complete, and some cash still in my pocket, this was the best decisipn that I was thrust into. There are so many reasons why I enjoy being at this College, and I can honsetly say that I couldn't see myself growing more as a person anywhere else. First of all, I love the people. There aren't cliques or popularity contest here. You have people of all types of races, ages, and cultures. It's like one of those cartoons from the 90s with squggly art. No one here is the same!

    Am learning a lot

I am a Theater Major, and also want to continue my studies on Creative Writing, and there is no better Community College in the Sacramento area for these trades. Our Magazine is a Nationally Acclamed, and has competed aginst the magazines of schools such as a little place called Stanford, and won might I add. I have never seen a theater department more passionate and more encouraging than the one at American River College. The theater teachers will push you to the limit, and bring out something special in you that you never knew you had. I cannot describe how much I have grown as a performer. I came in a freshmen with very little acting experience, and now, a year later, have theater companies emailing me to audition for their plays. I give all the glory to American River College. Because of the innovative instruction, and the faith they have in every student, I know I will not be the only one making my dreams come true.

    Tips for prospective students

If you plan on attending any college take it seriously, just because this is a 2 year community college dosent mean you can treat this like high school. Showing up to class and doing your home work is expected, and if you dont then your out of luck. Teachers will only try so hard but its all your responsiblity to get your own stuff done. I suggest buying an agenda and takeing notes, because college expects alot mo0re from you then you knew you could accomplish.

    Bang for the buck

Buying books offline is the best way to save money since most hard covers are well into the 100's but when paying for classes financial avenues such as the BOG waiver fee can minimize paying 36 dollars a unit to only 5 dollars per semester. Along with the education i couldn't imagine myself going to any other college, because its just that convenient on my bank!

    Am enjoying being here

I am enjoying being here, not because its a smaller campus with more people I've grown up with, but because I've got a 3.0 GPA the entire first year and it wasn't even that hard to accomplish. Going to this college is a cheaper alternative to complete your general ed and if you go to your classes and stay focused and motivated you can transfer and get your Bachelors degree in less time.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers here are eager to help you accomplish any college goals you have, if thats to transfer or get into a specific program. With the extra programs such as WAC and library assistance with writing essays and researching you have no excuse to pass all your classes. The counselors here are very informative and give you every advantage to succeed in your future goals. Planning things out with them can help get through the process easier and keeping track of what classes need to be taken and how many units to either transfer or graduate with an Associates is definitely possible.

Audio tracks in the music department also help students have more practice for the quizzes! I didn't give it 5-stars because sometimes the the teachers can be extremely passionate and take things a bit too far.

    Am learning a lot

I am currently studying as a music major at American River College. The teachers are excellent and push you to become a better musician. For a community college, we have teachers that are willing to help their students through the internet, office hours and after class. There is a lot of opportunities to learn through the learning resource center filled with tutors and through the newly built library. I enjoy being here but can't wait to transfer to a university. I feel that by being here I can be competitive amongst other students at the university level.

Great for these types of students

American River College is for students who want a step into being an adult. The work is tedious but in the long run it will pay off and you will enjoy your decision. Even though this is a community college, you save money for your General Education (GED) and you make life long friends. Research schools that interest you, because you create your own destiny.

    Tips for prospective students

I would recommend knowing other students and understanding what the professor expects. When you make friends, you can organize study sessions because it is very difficult to go through college alone. If you meet someone that has taken the class already, you can receive their notes and look at their old exams to see how to the professor makes his or her tests. Understanding what the professor wants from you is a given, because this will help succeed in their class. I also recommend getting to know your professor because they will tell you more information than they do in class and they will try to do everything to see you do well in their class. Lastly, go to the professor's office hours because it is one-on-one tutoring.

    Bang for the buck

Last semester i spent a thousand dollars on my books, tuition, gas, food, and other miscellaneous objects. I am about to enter my second semester and already I am paying two hundred dollars on books. I recommend getting books online from Amazon or Barnes and Nobles. This will save you so much in the long run and try not to spend your money frivolously.

    Am enjoying being here

Yes I am enjoying go to American River. The students are nice, and i would recommend joining a club or a sports team. I am on the women's soccer team, and my team mates have helped me understand the skills necessary for college. They also helped tutor me with some of my classes.

    Am learning a lot

I am a freshman attending American River College and I have learned a lot academically. The professors I had last semester were very knowledgeable about their subject they were teaching, but they also expect a lot out of their students. I had about five to six hours of homework a week and three to seven hours of studying each week. The professors are enjoyable and try to stay on their good side.
