Some people may be uncomfortable with the homeless population in Antioch's neighborhood but it is a reality of life in a major city -- life anywhere, really -- and the building does have good security. And, honestly, if you're in the mental health counseling program, there's a very good chance that the homeless people in the area will be some of your clients in the future.

    Greek Life

There is no Greek life at Antioch.

    Clubs and Activities

I can't comment much on this -- I'm so busy with class and work that I haven't had the time!

Great for these types of students

Compassionate, analytical, emotionally intelligent, creative, unconventional, committed to the importance of diversity and the end of oppression.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Antioch's unofficial mascot is Ms. CoCo, a giant pig statue, covered in glass mosaic pieces. She glitters like a disco ball when the sun hits her just right!

    Bang for the buck

Antioch is a private university, so it's certainly expensive. However, as previously mentioned, all of the professors are practicing counselors, so you're not being taught by people who haven't done actual counseling in decades. The location of Antioch alone gives it a leg up in connecting students to diverse organizations and internship sites.

    What to do for fun

Being in downtown Seattle means easy access to all kinds of things -- the Seattle Art Museum, SIFF cinema, the Seattle Aquarium, the Seattle Great Wheel at Pier 57, and plenty of clubs and bars.

    Food and Dining

Antioch has a communal kitchen area, with fridges, a free pantry for canned and dry goods, a coffee machine, and several vending machines. There are plenty of restaurants in the area (the deli just a block away gets a real rush of students during evening classes) and Antioch has recently begun using "Peach," a meal delivery service.

    Dorm Life

Antioch doesn't have any on-campus housing, so dorm life is a non-issue. But there is a facebook group for Antioch students looking for roommates and/or housing and it's how I, and many of my friends, have found places to live.

    Academic Rigor

I can only speak to the graduate level classes and they are certainly rigorous -- no multiple choice quizzes here! Classes involve active discussion and serious essay writing. As an undergraduate, I thought a ten page essay was asking a lot; now, a ten page essay is something I can bang out in a couple of days.

    Tips for prospective students

Antioch runs on a quarter system which, while it does make sense for a graduate program, can be a tough adjustment; my first few quarters felt like a downhill run. Antioch does have its drawbacks, such as a scarcity of "in-house" scholarships, no student housing, and the lack of paid internships (but that's an issue bigger than Antioch, really). Within the mental health counseling program, you may find yourself wishing professors were less flexible and understanding, wishing they would just give you a hardline answer! I know, not a complaint you usually hear.

    In three sentences

If you're looking for a university that encourages critical thinking, a commitment to social justice, and experiential learning, Antioch is the program for you. Classes are small, rich with discussion and, in the mental health counseling program, all professors are also practicing therapists; you're not being taught by someone who's work as a therapist is purely theoretical. An aspect of Antioch's psychology curriculum that I value is the emphasis on self-awareness; it's not that a therapist must be perfectly well-adjusted with no mental health concerns of their own, it's that the therapist needs to understand their own issues in order to separate them from those of the client.

    Campus Safety

i have always felt safe on this campus because the faculty, staff, and students help provide a safe atmosphere.

    Greek Life

there is no greek life, just progressives and the occasional conservative or two.

    Clubs and Activities

student life students work hard to keep the students up to date on the latest activities. the activities range quite a bit, so student life students make sure to post the information around the school, online, and in our e-mail inbox.

Great for these types of students

students who are looking for understanding faculty members and open minded students, should consider attending antioch university (seattle). the academic support services help students who are falling behind, and the faculty members praise the students who are on top of their work with positive evaluations.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

the campus is located in the belltown neighborhood of seattle, which is right by downtown seattle. belltown has a lot of coffee shops and restaurants, so the opportunities for students and faculty to meet up during school breaks and after classes are in abundance.

    Bang for the buck

as far as graduate schools go, this school is not terribly expensive. there are many scholarships to apply for, and this potentially decreases the costs of attendance.

    What to do for fun

seattle has many choices for activities, and this school is tuned in to the highlights around the city. i have been to burlesque shows, concerts, social and political presentations, restaurants, and coffee shops with my fellow students.

    Food and Dining

there is a coffee shop with food on campus, and it has quite a few delicious food and drink options. to widen the scope, students can walk to other establishments for food and drink choices.

    Dorm Life

there are not any dorms. however, there are many housing options available nearby to the school. there are quite a few more housing options just a bus or two away, so many students take advantage of the advantages of the centrally based school.

    Academic Rigor

students are expected to complete a multitude of assignments and projects. it can be rigorous, so it is reassuring that the academic support services are so helpful.

    Tips for prospective students

prospective students, please keep in mind that this school will keep your brain actively engaged for the entire time that you are attending. it can be a roller coaster of a ride, filled with the benefits of people who have been confused before you and with you. the faculty and students are there to help you, as long as you ask for it.

    In three sentences

antioch university (seattle) is a wonderful school. students are encouraged to pursue their passion with an emphasis in group work and support from the faculty. community service and recycling are appreciated and respected.
