The typical Caltech admittee fits a general profile: the top of their class, has a passion for STEM, loves learning, is willing to push themselves academically, and many other qualities. Even for many students of high caliber who attend Caltech, the academics can be quite a shocking step up from anything previously seen in high school, so be ready for it. I had graduated first in my high school class, breezing through most of my academics, so when I came to Caltech, I didn't expect the academics to be so extremely harder than anything I'd seen. I was far from right. Be prepared to be lumped with many other students if your caliber, and surely some who've seen more math or science than you. Prepare to work the hardest you ever have before on trying to maintain the stellar grades you likely had in high school. Prepare for a completely different school experience. However, don't let that deter you: the academics are something completely new in terms of both difficulty and depth - the instructors and TA's not only know what they're talking about, they strive to go deeper below the surface to give students a solid and interested understanding in the subject matter, and they're passionate about their subjects. Tip: expect the academics to be unlike anything you've ever seen. Bigger tip: if you're the kind of student to get into Caltech, chances are that you'll enjoy the challenge and will embrace it, so don't let it deter you from attending one of the top institutions in the world.

Yes, this school is small, but if you want the best for your money, then what this school lacks in quantity is made up for in quality. When applying, just (what I call) brain-vomit everything you've ever cared about. I wrote my essay on liposuction because it just horrified and mesmerized me that much. Anything goes.
