Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus police are always on duty, and there are emergency poles around campus. Eastern is one of the safest college towns in the U.S.
Greek Life I do not participate but Greeks are active on campus with academic, service and social sororities and fraternities.
Clubs and Activities There are over 230 registered student organizations, with everything from Harry Potter Club, to Game of Thrones Club, to the Equestrian Club to French Club. Students also have the option of starting their own club if they do not find anything that fits them.
Great for these types of students Serious about school but also knows how to relax and have fun. Prefers quieter, not so urban pace.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Students love to sit on the steps just outside the fine arts centre -it's great for hanging out or doing work and also a prime spot for chalk advertising.
What to do for fun There are always events happening on campus with different groups putting on different activities. The town also has things for students to do. There are various places to go to for food or just to hang out.
Food and Dining There is a great variety of food offered and it's pretty decent too.
Dorm Life You get used to living with other people for a while, but people are great about being considerate.
Academic Rigor Pushes you hard enough without killing you.
Tips for prospective students Nothing really, it's pretty easy to figure out. Show up for class and you're pretty much set.
In three sentences Eastern is a comforting and welcoming environment for students from all walks of life. Campus is easy to navigate and has some pretty awesome sunsets. Resources provided to students are helpful.

Categories Comments Campus Safety EIU is actually known as one of the safest schools in the nation.
Greek Life Over 30 Greek life related programs.
Clubs and Activities I'm personally entering EIU as a student-athlete and that's actually one of my top reasons for deciding to enroll into EIU; because the clubs and activities impressed me so much with their community and resources.
Great for these types of students Students looking for a more personal university experience where you're not a small, unnoticed fish in a big pond.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There's one location on the campus where if you stand on this certain space and face a certain direction, the sound of your voice is amplified and echoes. I know it doesn't sound impressive, but its more interesting than you'd think!
Bang for the buck $1 bowling!! EIU is also known as being one of the most inexpensive schools in the state of Illinois. And there are two separate Dollar Tree stores in just a 2 mile radius of the school!
What to do for fun In the school campus, there's a bowling alley where students can bowl for only $1, in addition there's of course the rec center with ping pong tables and gyms and pool tables and etc. Outside of the school, there are several very large parks/forest preserves where any number of activities can be done from hunting to fishing to hiking to biking or running. Outside of the campus there are also arcades and movie theatres. It wont be difficult to find fun around EIU.
Food and Dining With 11 different halls, there are over 11 cafeterias to eat in, each cafeteria with different foods and styles in it everyday. I personally enjoy the cafeteria food; they have a diverse selection of foods every day.
Dorm Life There are 11 different halls to dorm in!! Whatever kind of dorming you're looking for; you should be able to find it here.
Academic Rigor EIU has its "Pine Honors" program, which limits its classroom sizes to 18 people. If you're looking for a good education, you can definitely find it here.
Tips for prospective students If you're looking into fields such as Physical Education or becoming a Teacher and you're looking at schools in the Midwest, make sure you visit EIU for sure!
In three sentences The most underrated university I've looked into as a student and an athlete. The town that surrounds the school is yes, very small, but there's a lot more out there than you would think; I personally come from a big city such as Chicago, and I was worried that Charleston wouldn't have the stores and restaurants that I'm used to; however, they actually have them all, except for Target. EIU is a 10/10 for me, but everyone has a school for them; EIU is a small and humbling school with big opportunities.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are light poles located very close to each other on campus. Every area is well lit and walking home at night isn't a problem. The response time is 30 seconds when an emergency pole is activated, the Charleston and EIU police do a great job to keep the campus safe.
Greek Life Greek life is absolutely huge at Eastern! There are many houses for every type of person. There are academic sororities and fraternities and there are social ones. There is a place for everyone. Greek court is beautiful.
Clubs and Activities Fun activities include ballroom dancing, spanish club, german club, and much more. There are bible studies and clubs for specific departments. Anyone can be involved if they want to be.
Great for these types of students Students who love a small school setting will like Eastern. There is not a single day that goes by where you don't see a familiar face. You will get to know people within just a few days of being there. It's a very close community.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The school has puppies on the quad during finals week. There are people who pass around free food in the library on finals week as well. Eastern also has a spring concert every year that is discounted to students.
Bang for the buck Eastern is extremely cheap for the education our students are getting. It is one of the cheapest universities in Illinois and it plans to stay that way. The best part about Eastern is the book rental, it is a quick, easy, and cheap process rather than students having to find and purchase every book. There is a one time rental fee which saves students lots of money.
What to do for fun Join greek life or a school club. I would say even start a club with people if you can't find one you like. When it come's to fun things to do around Charleston, there aren't many options. There is Fox Ridge State Park and many pizza places. If you want to do anything like see a movie or go shopping at a clothing store you must drive to Mattoon which is about ten miles away.
Food and Dining There is not a lot of variety when it comes to food. The people in the dining hall are not very helpful when it comes to asking questions. They seem that they could care less about the students eating there.
Dorm Life The school has cut building service workers and janitors. The bathrooms and laundry rooms are not up-kept. The RA's tend to do their job and will make sure they help you if you need anything.
Academic Rigor The honors college is very challenging and helps student look at the world critically from many points of views. Normal classes do the same, just with a larger amount of students.
Tips for prospective students Join a club and make ties. The best thing you can do at Eastern is make friends since there is a lack of actual physical activities students can do around Charleston.
In three sentences Eastern is a very small university. The professors care about teaching over research. The community is very safe and caring.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I always see campus police patrolling around after dark, and they are always in the area during the day as well. I walk home from my work at night alone, and I have never felt threatened.
Clubs and Activities I am in the acapella group at Eastern, and have taken advantage of several clubs that correspond to my major. I enjoy them all, and there are a lot of options, from Equestrian club to Math Energy.
Great for these types of students Eastern is great for the type of student that wants to be close to home, but not too close. It's also perfect for the students that want to attend a larger school but still be able to get personal attention.
What to do for fun Morton Park is within walking distance from campus, and my friends and I frequently eat lunch there when the weather is nice. There are plenty of campus activities to take part in as well, such as football games, showings of movies, and intramural sports.
Food and Dining The food is not awful by any means, but it is certainly repetitive. The food court is a good option when looking to stray away from the chicken in Taylor and tacos in Thomas.
Dorm Life The honors hall is a great place to live and everyone is very fun to talk to. Hall council is excellent, and I am friends with practically all of the girls on my floor. I enjoy living in the dorm very much. I haven't heard any terrible dorm experiences, and everyone seems to get along with their roommates and handle any problems politely.
Academic Rigor The classes here are fairly challenging, especially if you are in the Honors College. Some general education classes are quite easy, but the classes for your major are challenging and helpful.
Tips for prospective students Get your textbooks as early as possible to choose the ones in the nicest condition. Try to meet up with your roommate ahead of time to get to know them and plan.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois University is a place where you can be a part of many different things. There are awesome spots to study around campus and people to help you along the way. The writing center and tutors are a great thing to take advantage of.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Eastern is rated the second safest campus in the nation, anything rarely happens to endanger the students and faculty around the campus area.
Greek Life There are many fraternities and sororities to join in on, and if you don't find one you like, you can make your own fraternity or sorority with the help of teachers or administrators.
What to do for fun Eastern has many activities and clubs to join around on campus as well as many job opportunities as well. We also activities in the gym that you could join if you're not interested in clubs, but enjoying exercising. There are also some restaurants and malls that are 20 minutes away from campus and if you don't have a car, we have a panther shuttle to take you there.
Food and Dining Food and dining are great the first couple weeks, but the food does get too repetitive.
Dorm Life Dorm life is what you make of it. We are all adults and make our own decision in how we conduct ourselves in our dorm and with our roommate(s). For me personally, I love the dorm life because not only do you get to meet other people, but you discover your own habits and other things you didn't know about yourself as well.
Academic Rigor Eastern is no walk down the park. The academic level challenges each student to go above and beyond in their study and learning experiences in this university.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois University is filled with a positive and friendly atmosphere making current students or even incoming students feel welcome. The students and faculty are always helpful and attentive for all students regardless of transfer student, incoming freshmen, foreign exchange student, etc.

Categories Comments Campus Safety While there were some safety problems at the beginning of the semester, the police have done a good job taking care of the problems and making sure everyone feels safe on campus.
Greek Life Greek Life is a large part of the EIU student body. There are opportunities for everyone to get involved. Greek Life is a good way to get to know others not only in your chapter, but in other chapters as well.
Clubs and Activities There are many different types of clubs on campus, you just need to be diligent when trying to join them. There is an event at the beginning of the year called Pantherpalooza that is designed to help you find the opportunity to join RSO's on campus.
Great for these types of students EIU is a great school for any student. They have knowledgable professors in all of their majors, so students of all majors should consider EIU.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The steps at the Doudna Fine Arts Center is a popular location on campus. People frequently sit outside and study on the steps.
Bang for the buck EIU is competitive when compared to schools of similar cost and size. I feel the quality of education I am receiving is worth the money I am paying to attend school here.
What to do for fun There are lots of opportunities to be involved in the RSO's on campus. There are movies in the Union, bowling, and billiards. Charleston's community works with the University to have events such as 5Ks.
Food and Dining While the dining hall food is average, the Subway and Chick-fil-a in the Union are very nice to have. The Java in the Union is a nice place to stop and get a drink in between classes.
Dorm Life The RA's are very friendly and are always there to help out. Although you can't choose your neighbors, you can make the most out of it. It is convenient to have the dining halls so close. It's nice to have a good roommate to have someone to talk to after a long day.
Academic Rigor The classes are challenging but not overbearing. I feel challenged in my classes, however I feel like I am gaining an understanding of the material and can actually apply what I am learning outside of the classroom.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to have walking shoes as the walk to classes may be far. Also, when it rains campus tends to flood so rain boots are a good idea. Get involved as much as possible on campus. Talk to the professors especially early on in your major so they know who you are, join clubs, and go to the plays in the fine arts center. You only have one chance at your college career, enjoy it.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois University is a small public university, therefore the classes are small and you have direct interactions with the professors. The campus is small and easy to navigate. Certainly not least, EIU is known for being home to tons of friendly, fat squirrels.

Categories Comments Campus Safety If there's a residential issue, I would not recommend reporting it to the campus police unless one's life is in immediate danger. There's a texting program that sends reports of danger on and around campus while students are on and off break.
Greek Life The Greek organizations open campus events for Greeks and non-Greeks to part take in as a way to build the Charleston community.
Clubs and Activities There are an extensive amount of clubs and organizations on campus that are suited for several majors. The clubs and organizations could be a little bit more proactive in building their subcategory programs for student participation.
Great for these types of students EIU's small campus is a great branching out campus for students coming from a small town to avoid being overwhelmed by the fast-paced lifestyle of a larger city, like Chicago.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus In between the Biology building and the Biology Annex is a garden where students can go to as a stress reliever or a serene environment for intellectual inspiration.
Bang for the buck Eastern is a excellent choice for getting general education courses out of the way to transfer to a more expensive college.
What to do for fun There aren't a lot of amenities on campus, which makes students susceptible to seeping into a lifestyle of boredom. Finding clubs, volunteer-ships, internships, and other organizations to be a part of is essential because it builds familiarity of the campus, students, and future careers.
Food and Dining Andrews/Thomas Dining Hall does not serve the quality and taste of food one is familiar with at home. Taylor Hall serves the best chicken based foods on campus and provides an extensive salad bar of vegetables and sauces.
Dorm Life The Resident Assistants on campus are known for helping students in various majors with their course work. The Directors on campus are not the best resource to seek when it comes to personal issues with dorm mates.
Academic Rigor One's academic experience is solely based upon their major and choice of professor. Classes taught by older professors in the English courses tend to be more lenient with deadlines and difficulty of assignments.
Tips for prospective students Prior to attending Eastern Illinois, research the major you're most interested in perusing. The advisers on campus of Freshmen and Sophomores do not help the students seek a major that will best suite their field of study.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois University is an ideal institution for a student seeking a quite suburban or rural lifestyle. The teachers are proactive in their field of practice and their students' lives. The students are willing to help one other with their course work, which makes E.I.U. a great place to obtain future connections.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There have been some major safety issues in the past.
Greek Life Greek life is HUGE at Eastern. If you're not in it, then be prepared to feel left out and get looked down upon!
Clubs and Activities EIU offers lots of clubs that will fit almost anyone's interests.
Great for these types of students EIU is great for students who want a mediocre education and a ton of chances to go out and party hardy.
What to do for fun Charleston is a boring town, let's just be honest. Most of the students complain about this all the time and usually just go end up partying and getting drunk every weekend! Not the type of atmosphere for me.
Food and Dining The food is pretty good, actually! The Union is a good place to go grab a snack.
Dorm Life I didn't dorm but I've heard they aren't that great.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to take advantage of all their scholarships they have to offer - they are usually quite generous.
In three sentences Great financial aid opportunities! Huge party school. Ugly campus.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There's not a whole lot to do in Charleston, but you can always find something to do with your friends!
Food and Dining The dining halls aren't bad. Stevenson definitely has the best food. You can almost always find something you like at each of the dining halls though.
Dorm Life The dorms are a little outdated, but they are nice and livable. For the most part, I always felt safe, and I enjoyed my dorm experience.
Academic Rigor Some departments are definitely better than others. The education department is wonderful though! The teacher to student ratio is probably the best thing.
Tips for prospective students EIU is definitely an awesome college. You get the atmosphere and experience of a big university, but it's not so overwhelming.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois University is a fantastic university! It has such a close campus community, and the faculty to student ratio is excellent. I would highly recommend the university to anyone!

Categories Comments Campus Safety This school is pretty good with safety measures. There are cameras on dorms, R.A.'s do rounds during the night, and they even have campus police constantly going around.
Greek Life Greek life is pretty big here. And the options seem endless, there are so many groups to choose from. They all have their own ideas that they focus on, and most offer lots of options for students to succeed. They help you to maintain grades, as well as offering things like internships and connections for your career path.
What to do for fun There is a lot to do here for fun. There are lots of clubs available, and a beautiful campus to hangout in with friends. People sometimes will play music in the quad.
Food and Dining There is a couple of dining halls available on campus, most are known for there specifics in options. This is all individual choice based. Say if you want chicken, you go to Taylor. Pizza? Thomas. And they do holiday themed food as well, and also have random varieties available. For example: Stevenson has Chinese on Tuesdays. It's not scary cafeteria food, you may find yourself missing the options when you go home.
Dorm Life The dorms range from smaller buildings to large, from gender specific to co-ed, etc. It is a huge learning experience to live on your own, or to live with a roommate. The dorms here are full of a diverse group of people and offer employment opportunities.
Academic Rigor The classes here can start out bigger but they eventually become more personalized as you pick your major. For the most part, teachers tell you what's what from the beginning with a syllabus and reminders. This makes going through the course pretty straight forward. Homework can pile up sometimes, but this is also derived for your own personal choice in classes. Take on what you can handle.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to start off college with good study habits. If things don't go so well in the first semester, learn from your mistakes. You can always put a higher amount of effort to improve your experience.
In three sentences EIU is a great place to go to college! You get the experience of a campus life while also still being in a classroom that's a smaller size. This makes the teachers more approachable and allows students to succeed.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is very important to Eastern. Emergency button systems are all within 50 ft of eachother throughout the entire campus, so if ever in danger, one simply presses the button under the blue light, and a police officer will be with you in less than a minute. The campus police are all very sociable and nice and really make an effort to be seen, understood and recognized. They are seen walking around campus, day and night, checking systems and making sure everything is in order. Dorm rooms are very secure, as well. One can not get on to a floor of a dorm building without the key to that floor, and individual dorm rooms are locked with different key, as well. After a certain hour at night, all dorm buildings are locked from the outside in general, and can not get in without the special floor keys. Then, all night, dorm buildings have night assistants that go through rounds in and outside of the building all night to make sure that everything is sound and orderly.
Greek Life Greek Life is huge on this campus! You can't go two feet without running into someone greek. If that's something a student is interested, there's a large variety to choose from and it can be quite fun. Even if you aren't in a fraternity or sorority, the social events they host can still be attended by every-day students!
Clubs and Activities Huge variety, lots to pick from. There's something for everybody! Everyone really makes an effort to get involved and get other students involved, as well.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students who want the whole college experience. Students who are passionate about their academics, their community and their social lives. Eastern is also great for student athletes and students who have an interest in teaching, as our teaching program is one of the most revered in the state.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus It is legend on campus that one of our dorm buildings, Pemperton, is haunted. As the story goes, a student a very long time ago killed herself in one of them after having relations with a school worker, and she now haunts the building. True or not true, it makes for a fun story!
Bang for the buck Eastern provides a bus system to Chicago-area malls over breaks to provide relief for students like me who live very North of the school. It's a round trip ticket that can be purchased on campus and is a huge help for students who get a little home-sick from time-to-time or don't have another mode of transportation over breaks. Eastern is also all about their sports! Football and basketball games are a huge part of our lives! We enjoy being a pridefull school and Friday night games make for great memories. And did I mention, all games are completely free to students? Awesome! Eastern provides a great deal of scholarship and financial aid opportunities on top if it's already incredibly reasonable tuition prices. The board has decided that the 2014-15 school year will be the first year since 1994 that the school has not raised tuition at all.
What to do for fun There's tons of things to do! We have an on-campus bowling alley open all week, and $1 bowls on Thursday. There's a huge variety of clubs, activities, movies, and fun things to do offered all the time right here on campus for absolutely free. We also have a very huge greek life that one could become involved in if they so choose.
Food and Dining The selection is amazing. There are multiple places to go at any given time. You can eat whatever you want, every two hours, as many times a day as you allow. There's a selection in each dining center for each individual need, whether it be vegetarian, vegan, allergies, etc. Never leave hungry here!
Dorm Life I love my dorm community. Pick a dorm and an environment that you're comfortable with and stick with it. Make sure to do your research before putting your choices and down-payment down. Living with a person you don't know has many challenges and can really go either way from the start, or start to go down hill by the start of the second semester. Take advantage of the systems that help match you with a roommate, and make sure you get to know who you're living with before you agree to room with them. Eastern Illinois does a great job of making sure that every dorm building is fully equipped with everything essential, and there are many different quirks to each one. I recommend the dorm life here.
Academic Rigor I am a science major, so obviously my course work is very challenging. The rigor of courses in general require individual work and studying outside of the classroom.
Tips for prospective students Get involved. Find things that interest you or may interest you and run with it. Eastern provides a great deal of opportunities from Greek Life, to clubs, student government, and volunteer opportunities for everyone to get into. There is no reason not to get involved in at least one thing on campus, and it'll make both your experience, and your transcripts a whole lot better. Also, remember that college is work, and while having a good time is easy to do on this campus and in a college setting in general, never lose sight of why you're here-- to get an education.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois provides both a great academic and social enviornment for it's students. There are a broad range of on and off campus clubs, and activities to choose from, including a large greek life opportunity. It's gorgeous campus is close enough to essential stores, hospitals, etc., but far away enough from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to provide a great sense of independence, really making that college experience.

Categories Comments Campus Safety EIU is very safe. There are safety poles thoughout the campus that you can press a button and campus police are there right away.
Greek Life Greek Life has been a great experience for me. I have learned so much about the greek life and the brotherhood that comes along with it. The friends that I have made through my fraternity will be friends for life.
Clubs and Activities There are plenty of activities. I love playing racketball, which I never played until I got here. I also love frisbee golf. I learned to play battmitton as well.
Great for these types of students EUI is great for any type of student. There is every ethnic type here so you can learn so much from others and feel comfortable.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus My favorite location is in the fraternity house. There is always someone hanging out and you can either sit around and watch television or go outside and throw the football around.
Bang for the buck EIU is probably one of the most affordable state schools. The one nice thing is that your textbooks are rented here and included in your tuition. This is definitely a plus.
What to do for fun There are alot of different activities on campus that you can join. You can also use the gym at any time. People are always outside playing frisbee, catch, and football that you can join in.
Food and Dining The food on campus if fairly good. You can get a variety of different meals to choose from. Also the dining rooms are open to where you can get something to eat at most times.
Dorm Life Dorm life is adjusting to say the least. You get to learn how to adapt in a small space with another person. Although you make great friends that can all relate to what you are going through.
Academic Rigor The learning experiences are all that you make out of them. The professors make you think and push yourself to think outside the box. They provide you with learning skills and how to interpret.
Tips for prospective students It is perfect if you are looking for a school you don't get lost in. The people are friendly in town. Your education/learning is endless here. You get what you want out of an education when you attend EIU.
In three sentences I really like attending EUI because it is a smaller university. The campus is easy to get around. The classes are small enough that if you need some extra help it is very easy.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Police are really good. They patrol the campus and they are there if you need them. There are the little blue phone boxes if you start to feel unsafe, and you can just go to one and press the button. A police officer should be there shortly and escort you.
What to do for fun There are a lot of extracurricular activities, but I have never really been one for sporty things. I was heavily involved with the Panther Marching Band and the Christian Campus House however and I had a great time.
Food and Dining Just like anywhere, if you eat the same food everyday, you're going to get tired of it. It was great a first, but now it all kind of tastes the same. Switch it up with your plans though and you'll be fine.
Dorm Life It's different. My floor is okay, but I'll be honest, almost everybody likes to party a lot. Not everybody. My RA is very nice and extremely helpful, so I'm happy with her.
Academic Rigor I haven't taken a super difficult class yet, but I'm sure once I get further along in my major I will encounter some classes of a more difficult level.
Tips for prospective students It isn't that hard to get around campus. During the weekend before classes, there is usually a student led tour to help find classes. I did that an it helped me greatly. Check your panthermail often. It would probably help if you had it hooked up to your phone. That's what I did anyway. One of the best places to meet people is a church. If you have time to work on something, even if it's only a little time and the assignment isn't due until the next week, get a head start anyway. That helps with not getting overwhelmed.
In three sentences On a scale of one to ten, I would give EIU an 11. It is a fantastic school that really cares about its students. The faculty are well versed in their areas and want to see their students succeed.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There is many things that you can do for fun depending on what you like to do for your spare time. We have a rec, we also have intramural and intercollegiate teams for enjoyment. They show movies on the weekends and have other activities such as parties and such. There is usually something going on all the time.
Food and Dining The food is good and there is a variety to choose from. From sandwiches to steak, you are sure to find something that you like. If you dont like the food at the dining hall, you also have the union with other food options such as Subway and Chik-fil-a
Dorm Life There is many dorms to choose from but it also depends on the type of person you are. I have lived in one of the bigger dorms and in one of the smaller dorms. The bigger dorms are good but the smaller ones are better if you are a social person because you are more interactive with your neighbors,
Academic Rigor The classes are good and most of them are small depending on the class. The teachers are always willing to help because they want to see you succeed. Some teachers know a lot about what they are doing because they have their PhD in their degree.
Tips for prospective students Come check out the campus for the day and see if Eastern is the right fit for you. This will show you how friendly the people really are and you can get a glimpse of the college life at Eastern and become a part of We are EIU,
In three sentences EIU is a great college campus where it is easy to become friends with others. The campus is small and makes it easier to get to classes. It is very enjoyable and the faculty is good.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Average
Greek Life Most houses look the same and are University affiliated. Very strange and not a true Greek experience.
Great for these types of students Great for students looking to get General Education requirements out of the way. Much cheaper than bigger schools. Just be sure to review transfer guides before signing up for classes so you do not have to retake any courses.
Bang for the buck Great for students looking to get General Education requirements (These classes won't vary too much across any school) out of the way. Much cheaper than bigger schools. Just be sure to review transfer guides before signing up for classes so you do not have to retake any courses.
What to do for fun There is nothing to do here. Nothing culturally stimulating whatsoever.
Food and Dining There is nothing to do here. Nothing culturally stimulating whatsoever.
Dorm Life Pretty average dorm life. Food is acceptable.
Academic Rigor Most of the faculty are competent in their respective fields; however, much of the coursework is dumbed down and is not challenging or interesting. Many of my classmates could barely write a paper in the English language. Every decision the University makes seems like a joke. As I understand, the selectivity of admissions and general quality of the campus, including safety, has deteriorated further since my departure. I sincerely hope this does not lessen the value of my degree.
Tips for prospective students If you wish to have a challenging academic experience and a fruitful social life with like-minded individuals, you may want to consider attending one of the larger, more selective universities in Illinois or out-of-state, or at least transfer there after 2 years and save a little money and get the general education requirements under your belt. While I have a Bachelor?s degree now and a great career, I do have some regret about not getting out sooner and experiencing a truer college experience. Pros: - Good value (cost perspective) - Plentiful campus employment - Competent faculty Cons: - Wasteful, bureaucratic administration - Unhelpful, uneducated staff - Not challenging coursework - Low performing student body (noncompetitive) - Unspectacular in every way (not desirable academically, or even as a party school as there are only a few dumpy bars)
In three sentences I enjoyed the first 2 years here, but regret not transferring thereafter. I did well academically and enjoyed the social environment, but quickly grew bored with the campus and surrounding area. I wish I would have gone somewhere else.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is very safe. There are poles all around campus where you can push a button, and campus security will be there to help you. Campus security is constantly walking or driving around campus, so your safe. The doors to residences halls are locked at certain times. The doors onto their floors are always locked, and your personal room doors need keys to be unlocked.
Greek Life Greek life is pretty huge here, but that doesn't mean to you have to join.
What to do for fun There's always parties and those are always fun, but if your not into that, Eastern haves movie showings on Fridays of movies that are in theaters or just got out. There's a bowling ally, and the residents halls have pool tables and ping pong tables. You can play sports on the quad. Residence lobbies also let you rent out board games. Varsity sports games are fun; club sports are great too.
Food and Dining The foods not bad, and there is a huge variety. There's breakfast in one dining center, they all provide different types of lunches, and there's different dinner depending on which dining center you go to. There's a food court with subway and Chick-fil-a.
Dorm Life The dorm life is really peaceful. Girls don't normally have any problems, but whatever problems that happen the can normally be resolved verbally. Guys on the other hand have a tendency to play pranks on each other, but they will leave you alone if you ask them to.
Academic Rigor There are classes that are harder than others, but sometimes you need a teacher that can teach to your abilities. Any class is accomplishable, but whether you pass it depends on how much effort you put into it.
Tips for prospective students Don't take on more than you can handle. Take it slow. You don't have to join Greek life if you don't want to. Go to class.
In three sentences The campus as a whole is very relaxing. The people are very nice. the educations great.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I had an unfortunate experience which caused me to transfer from Eastern. While I was going there, a lot of things were happening. It did not feel like the safest school to be at. For the most part though, you are 100% safe. If you use your brain, you should be fine. Just think things though before you do something.
Greek Life Eastern is like the Mecca of Greek Life. A majority of students are in SOME form of a Greek organization. From the social sororities and fraternities of Greek Court to the academic, volunteer, and honorary fraternities and sororities. Almost every department has a Greek organization. It is common for students to be in more than one Greek. For sororities, there is AGD, Alpha Phi, ASA, AST, Tri-Delta, Tri-Sigma, DZ, KD, Sigma Kappa, and a few that are not in the Panhellenic council. There are more fraternities than sororities, some of the popular ones being SAE, Sigma Chi, Sig Ep, Delts, and ATO.
Clubs and Activities There is something for everyone here. If there isn't a club for you here, you can make one. Without a problem. Everything from intramural sports to religious groups. You will find something to do here.
Great for these types of students Those looking to get away, those who like to party, those who like the arts, those who like football, anyone wanting to rush in some form of Greek Life, anyone who wants to be a teacher in Illinois.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Everything about this campus is unusual. There is step dancing in the quad at like 11 at night, people smoking hookah on the steps, and just the students of Doudna themselves. You will see some weird things here.
Bang for the buck It is more expensive than a community college, but far less expensive than most schools. You have textbook rental included in your fees and tuition, and trust me, it's a life saver. I highly recommend coming here as a transfer student so you can at least save yourself some money.
What to do for fun If you can't find something to do on this campus, you are seriously not trying at all. There are parties everywhere. That's not your scene? Go check out the improv groups or a show in Doudna. Heck, go sit on the steps and just people watch. The rec center is a beautiful thing included with your tuition and fees, use it. Go to the bowling alley for some cheap games. Sports are almost a mandatory during your time here. You will probably run into President Perry at least once a month or so. Go to the library and check out a book or some DVDs. The residence halls usually do fun activities too.
Food and Dining You will find food you like on campus. Be it pizza, salad, burgers, pasta, or a sandwich. The food is better than most other schools. And it is almost fully customizable. There is ice cream in almost every dining hall. If you go to Taylor, prepare for chicken (and if Tina is working, tell her Tiffany sent you, she'll most likely have the brightest smile on her face and be a complete peach to you). Thomas is where it is at for the carbs. But never fear, there are other options there. Stevenson (aka Stevo) is THE place to go for either a date night, picnic food, or a sandwich to go. The Java is a beautiful creation and prepare to spend a large portion of your dining dollars there if you like coffee (get yourself a jalapeno cheddar bagel too). And for those nights when you're up until 2 in the morning studying, call up Jimmy Johns and wait about 5-15 minutes for heaven in a paper wrapper.
Dorm Life From a female perspective, the dorms (or residence halls as EIU calls them) were a 50/50 shot. Either you have an insane roommate who makes you fear for your life, you live alone, or you have the best roommate in the galaxy. Some of the buildings are better than others (Permberton does NOT have AC or heat so prepare for that). Living on campus is just as good as living off campus depending on your building and your age. Be warned though, you will most likely hate a lot of the people on your floor if you do not pick the right building/floor. Most artsy students choose to live in the Triad and it is well worth it. Athletes live mostly in Douglass or Lincoln. A large majority of students live in South Quad Pond (named thusly because when it rains, the quad floods and it's a terrible time walking to and from class)
Academic Rigor Like most universities, some of the classes suck. The teacher will be terrible and you'll cry while doing your homework because none of it makes sense. However, the classes for your major will most likely make you over look every other flaw with your schedule. Some of the classes are nearly impossible to understand unless you have already been exposed to the information, but if you reach out to one of your friends you're bound to make with that major, you'll do fine.
Tips for prospective students Start working on your work ethic now! You are going to away from malls and big cities. This place will change your life. Come with an open mind and a transfer credit for math (the math department is pretty bad). This school has a large portion of transfer students, so don't worry second year or more students! If you even remotely like to drink, apologize to your liver in advance. If you don't like to drink, just wait because that changes for most people. Also, save yourself the headache and disgusting shoes by getting a pair of rainboots. Trust me, you'll thank yourself later.
In three sentences A great school academically with an almost legendary party atmosphere. Either plan to do you homework early, as you get it, or last minute because you can get easily distracted by this campus. Once you are a Panther, you are always a Panther, even if you drop out/transfer.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities There are a variety of clubs and activities to join, you just have to go out and explore them. Get involved early on in the year.
Bang for the buck The tuition is affordable for students. Text books rental are included in your tuition so that's always a plus. It's education you receive is worth the money. To receive a bigger bang for the buck, apply for scholarships a year prior.
What to do for fun There's a lot to do at Eastern for fun. You can join clubs usually the first week into school. There's bowling and relatively new movies that you can watch every Friday. There's alway something to do on or off campus, just ask around.
Food and Dining The food and dining are the best! There Dining Halls serve different food, depends which one you go to. There's something for everyone, trust me.
Dorm Life Dorm life is fun, it's an easy way to meet new people. The rooms are nice and an average size.
Academic Rigor The academic courses are wonderful, just make sure you study. However: mathematics isn't a strong point so I would recommend if you're a Math Major you take classes elsewhere.
Tips for prospective students Try to register for classes early so you won't get stuck with 8:00 a.m classes. Remain focused but have fun, its college. Get your work done before you go out to party.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois is a great school to attend. The class size is an average of 30 students; depending if you have a lecture. The teachers are friendly, and very helpful if students don't quite understand the material.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Very rarely is there a reported case of assault on campus. There are emergency telephones all over the place, but many of them go unused. I feel very safe walking around on campus; many times I have chosen to walk alone. Lots of students walk around on campus after dark playing frisbee, talking, or playing music. So it is very unlikely that assault would happen on campus so long as you take the right precautions.
Clubs and Activities One of the few compliments I can pay to EIU's clubs is that they are very specific. They range from stomp groups to equestrian club with so many in between. The only problem is many are student funded which makes for a poor club. The clubs that thrive are the ones associated with volunteering. I have associated myself with many of these groups.
Great for these types of students If you love Greek life and supporting your school, Eastern is the place for you. It was recently ranked number 4 on a list of Illinois's Top 5 party schools. It definitely has earned that rank.
Bang for the buck The in-state tuition is worth the education, but not the atmosphere.
What to do for fun There is very little to do for fun around the city of Charleston. Almost all the activities on campus have to do with sports or parties. Neither of which I am a fan of. This fact has led me to become more productive in the community instead.
Food and Dining Eastern's dining halls and local restaurants should be the norm for all colleges. The food is always fresh and the halls are kept clean by the friendly staff. It even offers food late at night for those simply staying up or studying until the early hours of the morning.
Dorm Life Depending where you live on Eastern's campus can have a big impact on your personal experience. I chose to live in a 24-hour quiet lifestyle floor in my all female dormitory. I have only benefited from it. The environment is calm, and I know if I have any problems I have fellow young women all around me who can help. In my opinion it's almost exactly like a sorority, except far less expensive and much more accepting.
Academic Rigor Even if you aren't accepted into the Honors College at Eastern, you can expect classes that not only challenge you, but make you mature as a student. You have to adopt a responsible time management system for studying, projects, and recreational activities.
In three sentences Eastern is strong Academically. There isn't much to do unless you like sports or love to party. The campus is the perfect size if you want to be able to walk EVERYWHERE.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are hardly any dangerous situations that happen in Charleston. Luckily, if there are, EIU sends out mass texts and emails to notify all of the students.
Greek Life Like I've previously stated, Greek life is extremely big at EIU. However, students who do not want to be in a sorority or fraternity often feel left out or like they are not getting the most out of their college experience. I love how active people are in Greek life, but I do not think that should be the only thing to do.
Great for these types of students Students who are looking to be involved with Greek life would thrive here at EIU.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus When I first moved to EIU, I found the Doudna steps to be very unusual. They are too big to be functional, so at first I just thought they were for appearances. Then when I started seeing people sunbathing, reading, playing guitar, and studying on them, I realized they are a relaxing place to sit outside especially when the weather is nice!
Bang for the buck One thing that attracts a lot of people to my university is their amazing text book rental service. They save you hundreds on top of hundreds of dollars for text books that other schools sell at full price. This is a huge blessing considering how little text books are usually used. Secondly, they are very generous with financial aid I have found.
What to do for fun Greek life is very large at Eastern. Many people who get involved in sororities and fraternities often have booked up schedules! If you're not involved with Greek life, there are always interesting clubs and sports available. If you're not looking to make a commitment, then there are many band concerts, plays, and various other activities being held around campus such as the color run that was held last semester!
Food and Dining Considering my mom is an amazing cook, Eastern's food is very good. However, there are not many non-carbohydrate options which has sometimes left me slightly frustrated. Despite the days when I'm trying to diet, I love the dining halls!!
Dorm Life The dorm life at EIU is something I could have never prepared myself for in a good way! Everyone's experience is different depending on who they get as a roommate and who lives on their floor. The roommate I started out with is the roommate I plan to live with for the rest of my career at EIU! Living in a dorm anywhere will open your eyes to different types of personalities that you may have never dealt with before.
Academic Rigor Academically, Eastern is right up my alley. All of my professors adjust their standards to the individual student rather than having one large requirement to meet. They are always finding new ways to challenge me and keep me busy, but I never feel overwhelmed or not able to handle it.
Tips for prospective students I would advise to keep an open mind. It is always a good idea to leave your dorm room door open as much as possible because it helps make friends! Also, try to develop relations with all of your professors. They are always there to help, and they want nothing more than for you to succeed. If you ever find yourself struggling, do not hesitate to meet with your professor outside of class. They are real people, and I have often found them to be really friendly!
In three sentences Eastern Illinois University is an amazing school to not only further my education, but also to grow as a person as I am constantly thrown into new settings and environments. There are countless options to expand your horizon, and that is something that is new to me considering I come from a more cookie-cutter town. I have had the best teachers of my life here, and I would never consider transferring.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus police are very understanding. The campus is always open to new ideas for security and it is often brought up at hall meetings.
Greek Life If you do not want to be in a social sorority or fraternity try a volunteer frat/sorority. They still have events but for half the cost.
Clubs and Activities Student Accounting Society is a great employment opportunity Epsilon Sigma Alpha is a volunteering sorority and you make great friends for women.
Great for these types of students Live in weller hall if you want to make new friends that will last a life time. If you want to be on your own look into University Village to live at, they have s shuttle service for you.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Homecoming week is a blast. Do not forget to attend tugs for frats and sororities in the spring Join a group of your interest to help you through home sickness.
Bang for the buck Movie theater on Tuesday is cheap night. McHughs has the best fast food burgers.
What to do for fun Google the world's fastest pop machine or the airtight bridge. you do not have to go out and drink it is a great town to just roll your windows down and cruise. Also Champaign is close for some good food, and the movie theater in Mattoon has cheap night on Tuesdays.
Food and Dining Dorm food is okay, but the union has the better food. If you can try not to cook in the dorm because the ovens are touchy
Dorm Life I would recommended staying out of the big halls if you want to get to know people. Living in ford, weller, or mckinney will help make friends while you are away from home.
Academic Rigor Some of the hardest parts about Eastern are going to morning classes, if you can not wake up early do not take a morning class. Also get to know your professors in the first few weeks of the semester so you can talk to them more about your grades rather than being shy towards the end of the semester.
Tips for prospective students Look up your professors so you do not get stuck with one you will collide with. Study at the beginning of the semester so you have less stress during finals week. If you want to go out only go out once a month to save on money and to keep your education on track. Your first semester is always the easiest so try for a 4.0 so you do not stress for the last three semesters of your college career.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois is a small campus with a great atmosphere, and it has plenty of great professors. Class sizes are the best in the area, and it allows you to get involved with others in your major to find study groups. I would recommend Eastern to everyone for the best college experience.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I barley see the campus the campus police out at night. More of them needs to be out especially when it getting really late or when people have been drinking and are coming back from a party. This would make females more safer if they are walking back to their rooms and not have to worry about being attacked. The police are quick to stop you if you are driving and forgot to put your headlights on but they are almost no where to be found when while walking the campus at night.
Greek Life Greek life is amazing. They throw so many events to keep things interesting on campus. They have the Elite 9 and other greeks.
Clubs and Activities You can make your own club or join one. We have instramural sports for those who still want to continue sports but were not able to play on the actual school's team. There is a club for just about anything. You just have to ask you advisor for the list.
Great for these types of students This school is great if you want to be around different cultures. If you love to get involved and stand out amongst your peers. If you play sports for college (D1 Sports). If you like a medium to small class room setting. If you like 1-on-1 help.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Every year we have a homecoming parade. We have a bowling alley on campus so we have $0.50 bowling night. We have a big fiesta, carnival, and bull riding contest in the quad.
What to do for fun Almost everyday there is something new on campus to get involved in of even attend. There are concerts, ice cream socials, parties, kick backs, talent shows, battle of the bands, dance competitions, Sorority and fraternity probates, greek life etc.
Food and Dining The food is delicious. There are 4 dinning halls on campus and 1 food court on campus where you can buy a variety of food, drinks and snacks.
Dorm Life Some of the dorm halls have old fashion furniture. They are working to update the rest of the halls. Majority of the rooms and halls have the updated furniture. The halls are kept clean.
Academic Rigor The course level at EIU is challenging but helpful. There are also tutors available to assist you in the more challenging classes. Take advantage of it.
Tips for prospective students Dont have too much of a social life where you fail to comply with your academic goals. There are a lot of things and events to go to on campus... sometimes you cannot go to most of them. Put your work first.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois University is a diverse environment with a lot of on campus activities to get into.

Tips for prospective students Make sure to use ratemyprofessors.com when choosing classes because having a good professor could be the difference between receiving a passing or failing grade.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois University is a relatively small school which is good because the class sizes are usually between 35-40 people, meaning it is easy to form a relationship with your professors. Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is okay when it comes to safety the police can seem like more of a burden then help at times. I have heard that the blue safety poles do not work I myself have not used them however. Just walk with someone and you will be fine.
Greek Life Greek life is huge on campus. A big portion of the campus is Greek. I myself am apart of the greatest sorority in all the land Delta Sigma Theta. Join Greek life because YOU want to not because its popular.
Clubs and Activities There are thousands of different clubs on campus. You can never feel lonely or bored and you can always fit on, or start one of your own if they don't have it.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus none that I know of.
Bang for the buck Your first is always paid for but look for scholarships or grants for the rest of the time you plan on going to school. Eastern wants their money when they want it but they can help you have to look though they do not just hand it to you.
What to do for fun Go bowling, go skating, go to Walmart lol. There are some parties on and off campus. If you have a car you can drive 45 minutes to Champaign.
Food and Dining You get tired of the food after a month.
Dorm Life Depending on what dorm you stay in. Andrews is the best :)
Academic Rigor USE ALL RESOURCES! I give it a four but really its like a 3.5
Tips for prospective students Use all your resources, join clubs be active that's how you meet people. Do not let the party life conquer your educational life. Remember what you are in school for. You will have lasting memories but remember there is life after college.
In three sentences This school has great class sizes. The math department is not the best so I recommend tutors, but you should use the tutors for all subjects. Its in a small town but you do not need a car to get from class to class so that's a plus.

Food and Dining Though the food isn't that great, there are times where they serve a good meal.
Dorm Life Dorm life is great, that's where you meet most of your long term friends.
Academic Rigor The class sizes are very small so it's very easy to develop a good relationship with the professors making it easy to talk to them about academics.
Tips for prospective students Some tips I would suggest is to make sure you remember what you are away at school for. It's so easy for students to get caught up into partying that they forget what they came to school for.
In three sentences On a scale of 1-10, I would give Eastern a 10. I say 9 because it feel just like home and it's not hard to adjust there. Everybody is nice and friendly and the class size is a low ratio.

Categories Comments Campus Safety it had its ups and downs this year but i felt safe.
Greek Life lots of groups to choose from
Clubs and Activities softball, volleyball, intramural, art, academic, musical
Great for these types of students education and fine arts majors
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The sororities and fraternities do a tug at the end of the year.
Bang for the buck Money is definitely a necessity. You will be spending a lot and tuition and fees are expensive.
What to do for fun I loved to hang out with my friends, go to the university bowling alley or gym and play club softball.
Food and Dining The food choices were amazing. They changed every day and I was always satisfied.
Dorm Life The dorms can get crazy and messy so just do your best to keep your stuff clean and neat.
Academic Rigor Depending on your major will depend on how much homework you have. I didn't think the work load was too bad for my first year.
Tips for prospective students I would highly suggest studying frequently and also living up to the whole college experience. Don't go home every weekend or just sit in your room.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois is very diverse and has many programs that anyone can join. Eastern was a great first college experience. They have a wide variety of classes to choose from.

Categories Comments Campus Safety During the day, campus feels safe. However, at night, it's really creepy and the EIU Alert System is constantly informing us via email and/or text message of recent shootings, stabbings, and robberies.
Greek Life I'm not involved or associated with Greek life. But I can say, they like to party (a little too much).
Clubs and Activities There are a number of clubs and activities. Intramural sports only last around 2 weeks, however.
Great for these types of students There isn't much of a challenge and I feel that this isn't good for any type of student. All students, from lazy to over-achievers, should be challenged somehow.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I am not aware of any unusual traditions or locations on campus.
Bang for the buck I really don't feel like it's worth the money. I can't wait to transfer and begin to love college.
What to do for fun There's an AMC Theater nearby and a mall in Champaign. But honestly, there isn't much to do around here for those under 21. It can get pretty boring.
Food and Dining The food is about the only halfway decent thing here.
Dorm Life If you don't like to party are stay out until 6 AM with drunk college students, sleepless nights due to neighboring rooms, finding condoms in the halls or attached to your door handle, and stepping in alcoholic bile in the bathroom, then Eastern is the place for you. However, I can't wait to leave.
Academic Rigor I'm disappointed in academics at Eastern and in its professors. Sadly, the goal GPA for my floor is a 2.5 and my boyfriend's floor is a 1.7.
Tips for prospective students Attend class EVERY DAY. Always take notes. If an extra credit opportunity is presented to you, TAKE IT.
In three sentences I'm extremely disappointed by Eastern. So far out of the 10 professors I've had, about 4 have been good. The rest are unhelpful, unclear, constantly late, and don't seem to have a master on their subject.

Categories Comments Campus Safety This campus is pretty safe. You never have to be worried about walking anywhere alone and there are blue buttons and cops around all the time for our safety.
Greek Life Greek life is huge on this campus. If i had any advice for any one interested in coming i would say join. I am honestly not in a sorority and it has been very hard to make friends. A majority of this school is in a sorority.
Clubs and Activities Eastern provides many different clubs and activities for people of many different interests. The intramural sports are a very good activities and i know they also have very good clubs to join.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students who enjoy the small town feel. This school has a very small feel to it and you see the same people every day. It seems a lot smaller than what it really is. Also, if you are into greek life this is a very good school to attend. Greek life is one of the main things on this campus that attracts many people here.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Eastern is known for its castle at the front of campus. This was the first part of the college and has been there for many years. This castle is where the first classrooms ever were until they extended the campus and built many more buildings.
Bang for the buck Eastern is to expensive in my opinion. Eastern's campus is much older than many other colleges. In my opinion they should upgrade the dorms, dining halls, and classrooms to make it up to date. Considering it is a smaller school it shouldn't be as expensive as they are making us pay.
What to do for fun In the town of Charleston there isn't many fun places you can go but on campus they have the rec where there are always many people playing basketball and volleyball and we also have a bowling alley. Intramural sports are very fun and you can meet many friends that way. Also on the weekends there are always fun things going on and bars and clubs very near by, but if you don't like the party scene there are many fun clubs you could join that would fit your interest.
Food and Dining The food and dining at Eastern is the same every week. After being here for a week you know what they have every day because they never change it up. The food isn't terrible but you get sick of it very quickly.
Dorm Life The dorm life here is one of the best parts of this school. All of the dorms on this campus are all in the same general area so you will meet other people in the dorms nearby. The lobbies in the dorms are where many people hang out and make many lasting memories.
Academic Rigor Eastern isn't a very hard school academically. It is a lot like high school where the teachers are willing to always help you pass and many also give you study guides for the tests. I feel like it is one of the easier schools overall for a college atmosphere.
Tips for prospective students My advice for prospective students is join a sorority. This school is a very greek oriented school and that is the best and easiest way to make friends. My advice for the education part is always attend class and study outside of your class as well.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois has some very helpful teachers who are willing to help you and make sure you pass their class. The college itself is a lot like high school and a very small environment. You have to join clubs and be outgoing to make sure you get the full college experience, or you will feel like you never left high school.

Bang for the buck Eastern isn't expensive, so that's always a plus!
What to do for fun Hang out with friends, watch movies playing on campus every weekend, bowl, go to events hosted by different RSOs.
Tips for prospective students Study and manage your time wisely!
In three sentences It is a good school overall. Most of the people are friendly and there is never a dull moment down in Charleston. The academics aren't the best, but they're not the worst, either.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I feel that Eastern is a very safe campus. We have our own police force, and we have safety poles throughout the campus, and if you feel uneasy a cop will be there in minutes if you hit the call button on the blue poles.
Greek Life Many different frats and sororities.
Clubs and Activities They have many different clubs for all types of people.
Bang for the buck You don't pay a lot it's like $20,000 to attend here. It includes textbooks, and sporting events.
What to do for fun There are many things to do on campus like go bowling, sporting events, and events the university throw.
Food and Dining There are days that the food can be really good, and not so good. Overall the dining halls do have a variety in food.
Dorm Life I live in Andrews Hall. It is nice, and I have made some great friends. It can get a little loud sometimes. And if you really are a person that needs to study a lot then live on a quiet floor.
Academic Rigor The professors are nice, and will help you if you need it. There are a couple professors that don't explain very well, so be sure to ask questions.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to ask questions in class. Make sure you attend class, and take notes in those classes.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Both campus police and the town police are present at all times during the day as well as the weekends. They are always around and do not bother students unless doing something wrong. They always give help and can even drive you home at the end of the night with no questions asked. Their main concern is your safety rather than getting you in trouble. There has been some crime lately but people have been arrested within two days of the incidents.
Greek Life Greek Life is a big part of Eastern. There are many houses for both guys and girls. Everyone is able to find a house that they fit into and they are very welcoming. Even if you do not rush, they still are very friendly during the weekend and allow anyone to go to their functions. Everyone that decides to go Greek falls in love with it.
Clubs and Activities There are over 180 clubs and activities and if a club doesn't exist, they make it very easy to start your own.
Great for these types of students Eastern can accommodate any type of student. Athletics are very developed and our art, theater and music programs are phenomenal. The art center, Doudna, was recently built and will truly take your breath away when you visit. Teaching is also a big selling point. Personality wise, I have met people from all backgrounds and social groups. Everyone feels welcome at this school.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Grilled cheese Wednesday is very popular with all students on campus. This happens every Wednesday at Carman, the freshman dorm. chubby's pizza is also a savored Eastern ritual. Many students order this pizza when intoxicated. Other than the chubby's sticks, you probably shouldn't eat it when sober.
Bang for the buck Eastern is very affordable, especially for in-state students. The cost is the main reason for attending this school.
What to do for fun There are many clubs and weekend activities. They play newly released movies in the theater. The main activities are to participate in Greek life, party and go to the bars.
Food and Dining Every dining hall has a different theme for food so you are likely to find a dining hall that serves food that you like. Around holidays they serve special meals and fast food or sit down restaurants are available as well.
Dorm Life I reside in the freshman dorm and I have met so many great people that are in the same situation as me. We can all go through our first year together and continue to make great relationships.
Academic Rigor Academics are challenging but not impossible. The work is just hard enough to keep the interest of the students.
Tips for prospective students Get your work done first, then go celebrate. As long as you go to your classes, it is very hard to do bad in most classes.
In three sentences Easy to meet people. Teachers are readily available. Night life is great.

Clubs and Activities There's always something going on at anytime so noone should be bored ever!
Great for these types of students Any kind really.

Bang for the buck Everythings cheap here but liquor lol. That should deter some people to spend money on other stuff.
What to do for fun You can go out at night, go bowling or watch movies.
Food and Dining The options vary and some times it's good or sometimes your just out of luck
Dorm Life If you get along with all the floor then it's fun
Academic Rigor The courses are challenging but the teachers simplify it so one can understand.
Tips for prospective students Go to carmen hall! This is where you meet all the people you will be with over the next 4+ years. Also don't be scared of the distance its only a four minute addition.
In three sentences One of the best decesions of my life. I love the nightlife and the professors. I made closer freinds here in one semester than in four years in high school.

Categories Comments What to do for fun I am very involved on campus. I joined hall council in order to connect with people in my building. I also go to a lot of the shows and debates that are held on campus.
Food and Dining The food and dinning here is great. The food is really good and there is something for everyone. The hours are also really good.
Dorm Life I have stayed in two different dorms since coming here and I have loved them both. The building and the people are super nice. The best part about the dorm is the atmosphere.
Academic Rigor I like how challenging the classes are. If your willing to put the time in there's no way you wont get the grade you want. All the teachers are very willing to help and they really care if you learn or not.
Tips for prospective students I would definitely pick EIU again. I love the classes and how all the teachers knew my name after only a couple of classes. All the teachers are great and so are the students.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is the campus police of course, if there is something going on we have a blast txt and email system, and there is always filers up in the dorms and around campus informing the students and facility of any problems that is going on or has happened.
Greek Life There is a large Greek present on campus, next year I want to pledge a sorority.
Clubs and Activities There are so many I haven't looked in to any yet, but I will soon.
Great for these types of students Outgoing and friendly students. The students on campus are friendly and will help you. My first few days here, the students would say hello and ask if I was ok and needed any help. I was invited my first night to watch movies and eat pizza with some girls I met.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I haven't found anything yet, but I'm sure I will find some.
Bang for the buck I am so glad I am an EIU student. The campuse isn't to big but not to small either, it's a perfect balance. Charleston is a small town but very nice and friendly. Everything is easy to get to by Panther bus or walking. Campus is beautiful and clean, the classes are easy to get to within a few minutes so I'm not late for my classes.
What to do for fun There is always something to do, movie night, pizza night, the quad has get togethers and cook outs. Now it's football season so I've been to games then baskeball season will come soon so there is that also.
Food and Dining The food is good, not like home but it is good and a wide choice of food. Each dorm has its own dining hall and we can go there to eat if there isn't something in your dorm's dining hall you may not want.
Dorm Life I like living in the dorms, you meet so many new and different people, and they are there to help or just to talk to when you are not sure about something.
Academic Rigor The class load isn't difficult. My classes are early morning and some afternoons, so there is a good balance for sleeping and study time between my next class.
Tips for prospective students Be patient, ask questions, don't be afraid to ask for help. There is always someone here to help you from finding your classes to tutoring, its here if you need it.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Both Campus Police and Charleston City Police both patorling all hours and multiple emergency stations/call buttons place everywhere outside of buildings and next to sidewalks on campus. Also, there are buses that make multiple stops on campus grounds. A bus runs every ten minutes and even can take you to the Walmart in town too.
Bang for the buck This is university is at least half what I would have to pay at other schools. It's still a lot of money, but for tuition of a four year college to only be around 20,000 dollars a year is amazing and the education received at this university is excellent.
Food and Dining A lot of choices. There are dinning halls in the major dorm halls. There is the MLK Jr. Union where you can get pretty much anything want and there are mini grocery store in the dorm halls. Plus, if you don't want to eat on campus, there are a lot of restaurants near the campus, both fast food and sit down.
Dorm Life I love it. The University chose my roommate for me and they couldn't have done a better job. Everyone in my dorm hall gets along and is understanding. I love being able to hang out with the other girls on the floor and make new friends.
Tips for prospective students GO TO CLASS ALL THE TIME! DO THE HOMEWORK, even if you do not want to. It will help you. Remember to have at least some fun and meet new people. Finally, NEVER WALK ANYWHERE AT NIGHT ALONE! Always stick to the buddy system no matter what.
In three sentences The campus is very friendly to the environment, faculty and students. Everything is close to each other, so there isn't a lot of walking distance. The helpfulness of the teachers is amazing and the student to teacher ratio here is one thing that made me fall in love with this University.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Easterns campus is extremely safe. They have several different options to keep the students safe. Some are the Warning notification systems such as the emergency notification siren, Alert EIU (Phone Text Messages), and campus-wide e-mail alerts are in place. Students get those alerts if anything at all happens on campus that would effect their safety. The University also employs a 22-person armed and sworn police force. The University Police are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year
Greek Life Easterns mission statement is that the Greek Community prides itself in tradition and academic excellence. They aim to further develop men and women in the areas of integrity, leadership, and high moral values in order to better them and the community through service. I believe they live up to all that the mission statement states.
Great for these types of students Great for students that want to get involved and get the full college experience. Eastern is also great for students who get home sick easy because it has so many activities to offer that you become so busy you do not realize you are home sick.
Bang for the buck Eastern has a great finical aid program, where they go out of their way to help you get as much money for school as you can. The absolute best thing about Eastern, besides text book rental ( you don't have to buy one single text book unless you want to your whole college career) is that they have a locked in tuition rate. The cost of Eastern has gone up in the past 4 years that I have been there but my tuition rate has stayed the same with their locked in progame.
What to do for fun Eastern has an amazing greek life. Greek life itself allows you to get involved and do fun activities from, sporting events, dances, or local volunteer work with kids in the community.
Food and Dining Eastern has 3 Dining halls and one food court. They have everything to offer from breakfast for dinner or a home-style family meal every night. The only down side of the food and dining is that it is so good you will want seconds, which can lead to the freshmen 15.
Dorm Life Eastern has most freshmen living in one dorm, that dorm is called Carmen, and they have different fun activities set up for the students in the dorms to get involved in. These activities are fun and they allow students to meet friends.
Academic Rigor The teachers there want you to be successful and do everything they can to make sure you achieve the academic goals you deserve.
Tips for prospective students Eastern holds high ideals in GPA and ACT score but that is not all they are about. I am a terrible test taker and got an average score of an 18 on the ACT, Eastern did not discriminate me by declining my admissions. They accepted me and gave me tips on better test takin.g
In three sentences Eastern claims the slogan YOU ARE EIU I believe they have obtained that slogan. I feel that Eastern Is a home away from home, and that Eastern needs me just as much as I need Eastern to better my life.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Numerous activities sponsored by the University as well as small but friendly settings in Charleston provide opportunities for those willing to seek them out. I've never meet anyone who has been unable to find fun at Eastern Illinois University.
Food and Dining Five dining halls, as well as a food court, provide numerous options. Dining halls specialize in pizza, deli sandwiches, Tex-Mex, Asian, and grilled entrees. The food court offers numerous restaurant dining options.
Dorm Life You will meet people you dislike but you will also make lasting friendships if you put forth the effort to meet people. There are numerous residence halls to choose from, each having a different environment associated with it.
Academic Rigor Different professors, different classes, and different departments run things differently. Most academics may not require rigorous study to pass but they will require study.
Tips for prospective students Get to know professors. With class sizes small, there is no excuse not to have a very friendly yet professional relationship with professors.
In three sentences Big enough that you will not know everybody but small enough that you can get to know anybody. Puts an emphasis on you and your contributions to the University and community. Allows you to pursue academic goals without drowning you in debt.

Categories Comments What to do for fun I mostly participated in my church activities. That was where I found acceptance and friends. There are also free sporting events that all students may attend.
Food and Dining There are so many dining options at Eastern. Sometimes it becomes a little redundant, but that's when you have to find new ways to create things. You have the option of being healthy or not so healthy, so the choice is yours.
Dorm Life Dorm life for the first year is essential, because it makes you hop out of your comfort zone and meet new people. I would not advise staying in the dorms long if you do not like sharing a communal bathroom and washer facilities. I stayed in the dorm for one year and will be living in an apartment from now on.
Academic Rigor Academically, EIU is an excellent school. As a Freshman, it was relatively easy, but with time I am certain that it will become more difficult. However, I am currently challenged to study all of the time.
Tips for prospective students Avoid excessive drinking, partying and spending. Once you are able to find your niche, you will be set. The sooner you become involved in a church, the better off you will be.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois University is an excellent school for all. Even though they are primarily a teaching school, they offer many other degrees as well. Providing the right choices are made, EIU could be a wonderful fit for all.

What to do for fun There's plenty to do for fun on campus. Free movies and programs to go to. You just have to ay attention to whats going on.

Food and Dining The food wasn't anything special at all. It seemed like I was eating the same thing everyday.
Dorm Life Spacious dorms where you meet great people.
Tips for prospective students Try to enroll in math courses somewhere other than EIU. Their Math department is not too good.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is always a cop riding around in a car and the campus has police poles in case of danger and they respond quickly.
Bang for the buck I personally think Eastern is very affordable if not cheaper than what it offers. I can experience the college expereince the same if not better than some of the Bigger universities.
What to do for fun The rec, the union shows movies over the weekend, stand-up comedy, fashion shows, open mic nights, over 5 different bars within walking distance, movie theatres, Wal-Mart Runs, volunteer service etc. There's never a dull moment.
Food and Dining Alot of different options. Some dorms have specific nights (Stevenson's Wednesday nights are dedicated to quesodillas). But it can be redundant and you'll miss a good homecook meal.
Dorm Life The food might become redundant after a year, but the people you meet can be lifelong realtionships.
Academic Rigor There is always someone ready to help you excel.
Tips for prospective students Join a fraternity/club/activity that is specific to your major i.e. Psi Chi (Communications Honor Society) it will help out a deal and end up being and excellent resume builder. Leave your dorm/apartment often and meet new people, it's a great time to network and in college you'll meet some of your best friends Talk to your professors, visit them during their office hours. Befriend them for a semester and if they remember your name your grade will be reflected and you can ask for a letter of recommendation at the end of the year.
In three sentences Eastern is a close binding community of future professionals and acheivers. Everyone there is there for a genuine education and everybody is ambitious and ready for the next step. There are so many ways to grow and so many club and activities to join in order to become the best in your field of study.

Categories Comments What to do for fun I have always been told that when going to Eastern, to join a fraternity or sorority. It helps you make so many friends. That is why I am already looking into frats and trying to make the best of my year.
Food and Dining I have actually had some of their food, and it is exceptional!! It was really good and the staff were eager to please!
Dorm Life Will not be living in a dorm
Academic Rigor Have not attended yet
Tips for prospective students Always make so to check in with your University if you plan on transferring. You can often be fooled by your advisers by being told to take classes that have nothing to do with your major. That was my problem when transferring. I had four classes that did not even transfer and I didn't need them at my new school.
In three sentences I am currently going to be a transfer student to EIU in the fall of 2012 as a Sophomore/Junior student. The transfer to EIU has almost been a breeze, and I feel that I am really welcomed into the college. I am excited to see what a great year I can have when attending EIU!!!

Categories Comments Campus Safety campus is pretty much safe, my first year on campus i haven't really heard about anything that would be a threat to students on campus.
Greek Life I am not involved with the Greek life therefore, i cant really speak on it
Clubs and Activities Eastern has a lot of activities going on around campus you just have to get involved and find out whats going on. you can log on to the EIU web page or just simply read around campus
What to do for fun things to do for fun is go to parties, go out to eat or to the movies, but you have to have a car or know someone with a car, go out to parties and socials, and go to campus activities
Food and Dining food in the dinning hall is really good, however, after a while you will get tired of eating the same foods over and over until the rest of the year is over.
Dorm Life dorm life is fun sometimes because the R.A have a lot of fun activities for everyone to do. also it depends on the type of R.A that you have. however, dorm life is really irritating you have to keep walking your guest every where and living on a floor with all girls can also cause drama.
Academic Rigor academic Rigor, i give eastern a 4, many people say that when you get to college the professors don't care, but that not necessarily true, many professors are out to help you with anything you just have to visit their office during office hours. Also there are many different resources to help students stay focus like tutors, and the writing center, and study tables.
Tips for prospective students Learn how to manage their time wisely and study for every class, even if you have never studied before you will need to start.
In three sentences I as a students from Eastern will rate eastern a 7 out of 10 because it a great school and people are friendly and professors are helpful,. he only thing is that its so small and in Charleston there is not much to do unless you have a car to get to Mattoon or Campaign

Categories Comments What to do for fun Frollfing (disc golf), gold course, the student REC center for working out, playing sports, or even swimming, there is a bowling alley. There is so much to do at Eastern there website lists activities that go on each week.
Food and Dining No matter what school you go to you will get sick of dorm food. Check out restaurants around the school and make sure to buy a mini fridge so you can stock up on healthy foods you can eat in your dorm.
Tips for prospective students Go to class every day no matter what! Also try to gain a relationship with your professors because you won't feel as nervous to ask questions.

Categories Comments Campus Safety there is great safety on campus. every where around there is police buttons in case you are being attacked or an emergency occurs. they constantly ask students what they would prefer to change on campus to make it more safe for everyone. so you do not go unheard when it comes to taking care of your safety.
Greek Life i love their greek life. i would never have met the wonderful people i now share so many memories with. i do have none greek friends and when i compare all the activities that i attend and what they do, i would have to say they do miss out on a lot more interesting functions and plans. i would suggest everyone to at least try it. but it is not a life long contract you can always drop if you do not like it.
What to do for fun on campus i enjoy visiting the shows they play in our theater campus. we always have quad activities that get people involved even when you are just passing through on your way to class. we have our own bowling ally which makes passing time fun for everyone.
Food and Dining They have 5 different areas to eat. 4 dorms and 1 union hall which is like a food court. you can create your own food in the dorm halls which is nice because if you decide you want to change your taste of food you may because it is like a buffet setting. you really have to make sure your watching what you eat because the options very from healthy to very unhealthy.
Dorm Life I think living in the dorm was a great experience. you get to meet so many new people. not to mention most of the dorms on campus are located within minutes of your classes so sleeping in is always great. The dorms also help you to transition into either getting your own place or moving into greek court. Which i would highly recommend because you meet so many great people. and the opportunities for you are much greater than someone who does not rush.
Academic Rigor It truly depends on who you get as a teacher. for the most part homework is not an issue. most of the classes i have attended have been group projects and large assignments. but always attend class because no matter what professors will cover things in class you can not get from your books.
Tips for prospective students always make sure to check rate my professors because sometimes you will end up with teachers you can not understand. Also ask around to older students their opinions on professors it really does help in prioritizing your schedule. Managing time is a big one now that you will be living basically on your own you will loose track of what is most important to do. never put going out in front of your school work otherwise you will have to drop out and attend a community college and the experience will not be the same.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois is a comfortable university for incoming freshman to feel welcome after leaving their homes. The campus is decently large but incredibly manageable to get around. I love this school, it is like my home away from home.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is the safest school in Illinois. There are emergency call buttons located everywhere around campus.
Greek Life Greek life is fun but it is not needed to have fun.
What to do for fun Volunteering, bowling, going to the movies, and going to the lake are all fun activities.
Food and Dining There are so many options to choose from so you never get sick of the food.
Dorm Life Dorm life is amazing. The dorms are close distance to everything on campus.
Academic Rigor Eastern's academics are very high and challenging. The educators there want their students to succeed.
Tips for prospective students Students should know that the campus is located in a more rural setting.
In three sentences Eastern is a warm and welcoming place that feels like home. Everyone is friendly, helpful, and you never feel like you don't belong. It is a place for people who want a great education and a diverse and fun college experience.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The best part of EIU is that you never feel like you are in danger. It's like you can be as comfortable as you can at home. I live here, but people who come from as far as California have told me that EIU is one of the safest places they've ever been.
Greek Life I am not apart of the Greek Life, but I have many friends in the Greek system. Not all of them are what the movies portray, but the Greeks are all very kind and fun to be around.
Clubs and Activities There are tons of clubs available at EIU, including fraternities, sororities, and sports. Although there isn't much commercially to do in Charleston, you can always find people that like to do what you like to do. You can always find something to do no matter what time of the day.
Great for these types of students Students who like a small campus and many friends around campus should come to EIU. It's a great place for anybody who likes to know their professors and know them well. I would recommend EIU for anybody who has a desire to learn and have fun at the same time.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are tons of cool traditions around campus. The sororities and fraternities have Greek Week which is a week where they have competitions like the tugs and greek sing. The athletics at EIU are awesome. The EIU track and field team and the EIU softball team are both conference champions and are both very competitive in their sports. The Doudna steps are a fun place to hang out in between classes and are extremely easy to find in the middle of campus. There is also a twenty-four hour study lounge we like to call The Fish Bowl because it is made completely out of glass.
Bang for the buck Eastern is one of the least expensive schools in Illinois, but you do not get cut short on education because of it. This school is really a great place to learn and earn your degree while not paying out your ears for it.
What to do for fun There really isn't much to do in Charleston, but you can always go bowling at the campus bowling alley, attend one of the many shows in the Union, go to a movie over in Mattoon, or even go to the Cross County Mall in Mattoon only twenty minutes away.
Food and Dining The food is not four-star, but it definitely feels like home when you sit down to a meal anywhere. The staff is always polite and you can always find something that you like.
Dorm Life I loved living in the dorms at Eastern. I lived in Lincoln Hall for two years and the experience is worth it. I made tons of friends as well as learned how to live on my own without actually being alone.
Academic Rigor Eastern is not exactly the most difficult school to attend, but it is still a great place for learning exactly what you need to get ahead in life.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that you get all of your registration stuff done early. This makes it easier for you to get everything turned in before deadlines. Always, always, always have at least seven meals on your panther card. Eating around campus is the best in between classes.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois University is the perfect place for a student looking for a good home feeling. Charleston is not only a great community, but the campus is small enough for a student to become familiar with other students as well as their professors. Eastern is a great place for college whether you're just graduating from high school or returning to college after a few years off.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I would consider EIU to be a very safe school. There are 19 Big Blue emergency poles scattered throughout the campus and at any time that you feel uneasy you can press the emergency button and an officer will arrive within 20 seconds. There are 3 police officers that monitor the campus daily, one on foot, bike, and in a car to ensure the safety of all students.
Greek Life Although I am not affiliated with any Greek sorority on campus, the Greek life can be very beneficial to become apart of. EIU has its very own Greek Court where all the Greeks can choose to live and they are considered on campus. The Greeks value academics as well and take great pleasure in giving back to the community.
Clubs and Activities EIU offers over 200 registered student organizations (RSOs) that you can get involved in. There is at least one club or activity that fits everyone and if you don't find one for you, you can create your own RSO with at least 10 members. EIU also offers intermural (boys and girls) sports teams where you can sign up and play sports against other teams on campus. You can also create your own dream team of you would like.
Great for these types of students If you are a quiet person who keeps to yourself, EIU is a great college for you because they offer quiet living style floors on the halls for peace and quiet. If you are the outgoing type, EIU offers various events throughout campus to attend which include live concerts put on by famous singers, bands, rappers...etc.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus An unusual location on campus in a burial site for a dog named Napoleon. Napoleon was a little dog who wandered in and out of classes at EIU and became Eastern's pet dog so when he died, he was given a tombstone right behind EIU's castle.
Bang for the buck EIU offers various scholarships that you can apply for. Not only do they offer scholarships, they provide their students with many honors societies that you can join within your major or for academics. EIU also offers job employment opportunities for their students whether its working in the library, recreational center, at the front desk at a residence hall, or as a Resident Assistant, and many others!!
What to do for fun EIU is a fairly small campus, however; there is a bowling ally in the University Union and on certain days, you can bowl and get shoes for $1. There is also a recreational center where you can go and work out and rent out equipment such as table tennis and sports equipment for free! You may also utilize the pool and go for a swim.
Food and Dining EIU has 4 dining centers, one in Carman, Thomas, Taylor, and Stevenson Hall. Each hall serves different foods. In Carman, they are known for their Jump Asian Cuisine, Thomas is known for its Pizza and Pasta, Taylor is known for its Chicken Crisper's, and Stevenson serves various sandwiches and also includes a Reservation Dining where you can reserve a seat with friends and are served 3 course meals which include the appetizer, the main dish, and the dessert. Each hall has a salad bar and desert bar as well. Although those halls are known for a certain specialty, the halls also serve various foods in them and you can access the menu on the school's main website. There is also a University Union that has 4 restaurants inside it if the dining centers are closed or not serving what you would like.
Dorm Life There are 12 residence halls you can choose to live in and each have different restrictions such as visitation hours for the opposite gender and co-ed or not. Regardless of what hall you decide to stay in at EIU, they all provide you with various events within the hall that you may participate in and they also offer various study sessions as well.
Academic Rigor Although college may be tough at times, the student to faculty ratio at EIU is 16:1 meaning you have plenty of one to one help from the professors. At EIU, the professors want you to excel so they provide office hours for you to attend and majority of the time you can stop by whenever you would like. College is a different environment from high school so the work will not be easy but it is not hard either; as long as you put forth the effort and study time, an A can be easily attained.
Tips for prospective students One tip for a prospective student is to come to EIU with an open mind and be willing to learn from not just the teachers, but from others around you because you will learn that not everyone may be from the same location or share the same heritage or values as you. Another tip would be to have an idea of organizations you would like to join or Greek organizations so that you are well informed on when and where they will host their meetings on campus. My last tip would be to remember to have fun while you are in college and not overwhelm yourself in your academics because you will definitely want to be affiliated with some kind of organization or have friends to help take away some of the stressful times college may bring.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois University is an amazing school because it is the perfect size; not too big but not too small and every building is within a 10 minute or less walking distance. EIU has over 200 registered student organizations that you can be apart of so there is a club or sport that fits everyone and if you would like to start your own RSO you have that opportunity. EIU is also a diverse college and takes pride in its diversity by hosting various school events around the campus to help spread diversity throughout the university.

Categories Comments What to do for fun This school provides activities every weekend such as movies that aren't on DVD yet. They also plan activities a couple of times throughout the year. There also is a bowling alley and games during the weeks to see. There is a lot of things to do you just have to go out and have fun.
Food and Dining This school doesn't have the best food in the dining halls, but there are a lot of fast food places and restaurants to go to, and they deliver.
Dorm Life I love the feel of dorm life it helps you see what is going on around your hall and campus before others who live in apartments. It is also a way to meet your friends that you will have for life.
Academic Rigor The good thing abut this school is that the teachers want to see you succeed. But this school doesn't have a great variety of math teachers.
Tips for prospective students Be outgoing and say hello to everyone on your floor. Do all activities that the dorm and school have to offer. Start off your school year by joining a lot of clubs.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois is a great school for students that would like to meet their teachers to get extra help on assignments. It is a school that you can meet great friends that you will have for life. They also have many free, fun activities during the school year.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Occasionally there will be an alert about some activity or another but overall most students aren't worried about their safety. Students can be found walking around at all hours of the day and night by themselves, unconcerned with fear of being hurt.
Clubs and Activities A wide variety to choose from whether just to try something new or for long term purposes.
Bang for the buck Places throughout the community give student discounts. We receive coupon books at the beginning of the year, that are continually issued throughout the year. Local places have specials on certain days.
What to do for fun Join an organization, go out on the weekends, go to social/academic events. Posters are posted around campus to let you know what to look forward to. Also, people in organizations post through social networking sites.
Food and Dining Each dining hall is known for its specialties. There isn't much variety outside of that, just a rotating schedule on when they will serve which dishes. Overall the food is good, I preferred certain halls over others.
Dorm Life There is potential for roommate issues but this depends on the level of seriousness you take when initially going over expectations/negotiations. Bathrooms tend to fluctuate with cleanliness based on the communities respect for each other as a whole. Some rooms tend to get cold in the winter.
Academic Rigor Though there can be gaps in communication and understanding among students and faculty, each persons experience with a course will vary. It is important to understand what the professors expectations are from day 1 and to seek extra help when needed. But most importantly, take every course seriously and commit to learning and retaining the knowledge regularly.
Tips for prospective students All depends on whether you decide to breeze through without being seen or be proactive and get involved. Remember no matter how much fun you're looking to have, that you are there to gain knowledge and obtain your degree. Take advantage of the resources available to you including: counseling, career services, organizations, and faculty.
In three sentences Perfect for a student looking for the college campus experience without getting lost in the crowd. Potential to gain social and academic growth. Faculty is helpful on an interpersonal level.

Academic Rigor From my experience at EIU, I found that all the teachers, are more than about the grade. They want you to learn and succeed. Even though the classes may be rigorous an individual will leave EIU with having a quality learning experience.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus Safety is phenomenal. At the beginning of the year an officer comes and speaks to every dorm and tells them some safety features and gives out rape whistles. There are security poles all over campus that you can push the button and police will be there in seconds.
Greek Life Greek Life is amazing, and I couldn't imagine my college experience without being in a sorority. I highly recommend Greek Life. It helps you out in the long run, it gives you great opportunities in and out of college life.

What to do for fun They have the Rec. Center that you can go to for the gym, pool, or lift weights. There are a couple sand volleyball courts on Greek Court. Since the campus is so small, you have to make the fun instead of it coming to you.
Food and Dining The food is awesome. They have such a variety of food at each of the dining halls. They also have Late Night pizza which is really cool.
Dorm Life Dorm Life was probably the best experience of my life. I loved being able to either be right next door, or a couple doors down from some of the best friends I have ever made. I highly recommend staying in Andrews Hall.
Academic Rigor Whether anyone knows it or not, Eastern is a great school. Academics and all. The teachers push you because they know what you are capable of.

Categories Comments Campus Safety This is a very safe campus. There are many emergency towers located throughout campus that will assist you at any time of day or night. There are rarely any incidents in which there are serious emergencies. The town of Charleston, in general, is a safe place to live.
Greek Life Greek Life is very popular at Eastern Illinois University. It is a great way to participate in various recreational activities, and meet new people.
Clubs and Activities A lot of people join different clubs and activities. There are so many intramural sports teams you can join, and there are also so many different clubs that can fit anyone's interests.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students who want to get the college experience in a small town. The campus is small; which is great for transportation purposes, and getting to know your community.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The most popular monument of this university is the Castle; which is located in the front of the school.
Bang for the buck This school is a great price for its experience and education.
What to do for fun Eastern Illinois University always has recreational activities to enjoy around campus. They have volunteer services, clubs to join, intramural sports to join in, and lots of other events that help students get to know each other.
Food and Dining The dining halls vary in relation to the quality of the food. However, there are many options for just about anyone: including vegans and vegetarians. There is a Late Night dining service every weeknight from 8:00PM to 1:00AM in case you get hungry at night, or in my case, have a late night study session at the library.
Dorm Life Living in the dorms is a great experience for freshmen/newly transferred students. It teaches you how to live on your own, take on responsibilities, and it also puts you in a more comfortable environment. You are around students that are in the same situation as you, and you can make friends with your peers.
Academic Rigor It is important to see your professors out of the classroom, and discuss what you, as an individual, need to do to become successful at Eastern Illinois University. If the professor sees that you have concern, then they will show concern.
Tips for prospective students The best way to become a successful student is to construct good time-management skills. This will help you balance your studies, extracurricular activities, and social life, with less stress. This skill can also lead to better responsibility, and character building.
In three sentences Eastern Illinois University may be one of the smallest public universities in Illinois, but it is filled with so many opportunities. The campus is small and friendly; which makes getting to class a lot easier. The school is very organized, and helps you adjust to the college atmosphere very quickly. This is definitely a university that I recommend that you inquire more about.

What to do for fun There's a lot to do for fun, no matter what you like to do. There are over 90 intramural sports and many RSO (registered student organizations). If Eastern is missing an organization you think it needs, go ahead and start one.
Food and Dining Each dining hall is known for something different. Depending on your taste, you can choose from a variety. There are also a lot of restaurants within easy walking distance.
Dorm Life Dorm living isn't anything like living at home. Make sure you connect with your roommate ahead of time. Plan what each of you is bringing and try to get along. You can always change roommates if you need to. Sometimes it gets a little loud and crazy. Just imagine being in a hotel with smaller rooms and a whole lot of college kids.
Academic Rigor The rigor depends on the class. Honors classes are available but quality teaching does not limit itself to the Honors College.
Tips for prospective students Take a day to come to Charleston and tour the campus. Reading about it on websites and in brochures doesn't give the personal feel that you find in person. Walk through the different buildings and talk to faculty in your intended major. Knowing a little more about what you want to do can be a huge help.
In three sentences The community is close-knit, even for a campus with so many people. Professors, academic advice, benefits, and anything else you can imagine is very accessible to students. There is a wide variety of classes to be taken.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Everything. Getting involved in sports, Greek, or other groups makes Eastern so much fun!
Food and Dining the food isnt horrible, but it is similar to a buffet with food that is not very fresh
Dorm Life the RA's here are really nice and help you in so many ways.
Tips for prospective students Get involved. The more you do on campus, the more fun you will have while being here!
In three sentences Eastern is a good school for students wanting to go to a four year university while being in a small city. The campus is fairly compact so everything is easily accessible. There is a lot of activities to get involved with.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Eastern has a very safe campus so students can thrive academically and socially. The Eastern Campus Police and the Charleston Police department make sure to work together to keep student safe, with immediate alerts in the event of danger. There are numerous call buttons throughout campus to make sure they can be reached quickly.
Greek Life Greek life is prominent at Eastern. There are numerous fraternities and sororities for students to join. The Greek system's members are outstanding members of the Eastern community. Greek life is a great way to make friends, help maintain good academic standing and be a part of the community.
Clubs and Activities Eastern has clubs and activities for everyone's liking. There's intermural and intercollegiate athletics to play, along with a great recreation center for those who like to exercise. There are groups like student government, department clubs, religious activities and residential hall government to name a few things students can do to meet other students and be a part of the university community while having a great time.
Great for these types of students For students looking to major in teaching, political science or business, Eastern does everything possible to get you prepared to head into the work force. Eastern has many successful graduates in these fields, including five term governor of Illinois Jim Edgar.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus It's been a tradition for students to take pictures on the Panther statue outside of Marty's. Eastern is also home to the first Jimmy Johns, as Jimmy John himself took classes here.
Bang for the buck Cost wise, Eastern makes attending college affordable. Once you get a tuition rate you are locked in for the remainder of your time at Eastern. Housing and dining provide cost comparable to living off campus, utilities included. Renting textbooks saves you hundreds of dollars to spend on things you need. It cost the same to educate you anywhere, why pay more than you should?
What to do for fun Eastern has many different events going on throughout the year for students to enjoy. There are clubs and intermurals to play in all year round. You can always head over to the bowling ally located next to the Food Court, or feel free to catch a free movie Saturday and Sunday. Along with plays, musicals and standup comedy shows you can always find something to do for fun.
Food and Dining Eastern's dining halls provide many different options for student's to enjoy. Aside from all the dining halls, the Food Court provides popular places like Subway and Chic-fil-A. Off campus there are numerous places to enjoy, including the original Jimmy Johns.
Dorm Life The dorms provide a great living/study environment. The rooms are big enough to fit two roommates comfortably, and you always have the ability to buy out your room to get a single. The dorms provide great ways to meet people and have fun while living on campus.
Academic Rigor The classes always vary on the professor, but most teachers place emphasis on showing up and doing you're work. If you can do that, you will pass with flying colors.
Tips for prospective students As cost continue to rise, schools like EIU manage to keep cost down, including renting out textbooks instead of requiring you to buy them, savings you hundreds of dollars.
In three sentences EIU provides great opportunities for higher learning. The cost is cheap compared to other schools. Neither too big nor too small, the college size is just right.

Bang for the buck It's definitely worth the money to go to this school its been an unbelievable experience.
What to do for fun Go to Jimmy Johns late at night with friends! Go to buzzard movie nights, which are movies that aren't out yet on DVD. Any RHA, or UB events that are on campus.
Food and Dining The food isn't terrible, yet it's not anything like home cooking unfortunately. The make your own pizza at Thomas dining is very good though!
Dorm Life If you go to EIU, live in Weller Hall. Seriously the best hall on campus you will develop friendships that last forever! The whole dorm life in general on campus is outstanding you will no matter what meet tons of people in your dorm!
Academic Rigor Classes are not extremely difficult, but they are not easy. You do learn a lot of very useful things from courses you take here. Also a huge plus is smaller class sizes so you developed a better teacher-student connection so it's easier to ask for help.
Tips for prospective students EIU is a great school, it's a lot of fun and there is a lot to do on campus. You will enjoy becoming part of the school body, and spirit. Your voice is heard on the campus and the school is very student focused.
In three sentences Three sentences is not enough to explain how amazing Eastern Illinois is. Friends, memories, education, and experiences are made here and will be kept forever from EIU. I am EIU, I bleed blue and grey, and GO PANTHERS!

Categories Comments What to do for fun the night life here is unexplainable. lots of fun and its quite the experience. lots of memories will be made hat eastern no doubt.
Food and Dining decent cafeteria food. be sure to have your parents send you some good home made cooking because the food here starts to taste the same after a while.
Dorm Life i've met really good friends here although the dorms are quite small and inefficient.
Academic Rigor many kids like to start their weekend on wednesday so i believe that it may be hard to stay on task as a student. going to eastern sure does prep you but you have to stay focused and on task.
Tips for prospective students stay focused and on task. getting into eastern isn't necessarily hard, but you should remember that it's an education both for the books and for the street that you will apply to your everyday life.
In three sentences overall a decent school. good school to get started. i have met my best friends for life here.

Categories Comments Campus Safety eastern illinois is a real safe place. there are blue towers that when a button is pressed on the blue tower a police officer responds within two minutes. every residence hall locks at midnight and has night assistants who patrol until 4 a.m. panthercards are always required when to receive a package from the front desk. there are two keys that student receives and one key unlocks a stair door and the other key unlocks the door. when a key is lost twice, the locks are replaced to make sure no one can use the lost key.
Greek Life sororities and fraternities is a great place to meet people to be able to hang out and have a good time. it helps build relationships with people that could last a long time.
Clubs and Activities there are a number of clubs which you could join and a number of activities which you could be apart of. from the den (daily eastern news) to the fashion club. each one has something anyone can benefit and learn from.
Great for these types of students eastern illinois is for any student. students who are early birds or students who are night owls. eastern accomodates anyone, the quiet hour for residence halls start at 10 p.m. so if anyone has an early class, they don't have to worry about not getting sleep.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the first week of school there is a bunch of programs that are held. such as quakin in the quad, where there is an obstacle course, bingo contest with big prizes with free food and drinks. there is also a casino night where a student would get a certain amount of coins and they can bet these coins and eventually turn the coins in for tickets which can be placed in a bag designated for a prize. then there is a drawing for prize. there are usually big prizes.
Bang for the buck as usual, most people think that colleges are expensive which they are but eiu has a fair price for what a college student has access to. a library that is open until 12:45 a.m. every week night. a recreational center with six basketball courts, a dodgeball court, two ping-pong tables, a inside track, a full work out center. there is a student service center that can help any student from a computer problem to finding a building when needed,
What to do for fun eastern has a variety of things to do. the recreation center is open until midnight on the weekdays and ten at night on the weekend. each residence hall has nights when they have a party that serves food that people enjoy. intramural sports is always something that is fun to join.
Food and Dining the two places that i went to the most was stevenson and taylor. taylor always has something to do with chicken. stevenson is a upperclassmen residence hall that serves from sausage and egg sandwhich for breakfast to a cheeseburger for dinner. thomas has the same menu everyday for breakfast and dinner. carman is a dining hall that serves stir-fry chicken and has a variety of food in the serving buffet table.
Dorm Life dorm life is enjoyable, meeting new people who share the same interests. walking out of your room and running into a friend doesn't sound very fun, but it is. think of a dorm as giant sleepover with your friends, now make that sleepover eight to nine months long. dorm life is how i made alot of my friends at eiu.
Academic Rigor the strictness of classes varies from level and what class it is. the difficulty depends on the teacher and the class that a student could take. its not uncommon to find two of the same classes varying in difficulty. teachers also vary, some teachers may only have two tests a year while other teachers have six or seven.
Tips for prospective students students who plan on coming to eiu, this is a great decision. when i made my decision to come to eiu, i was excited as i should be. the first week was really fun. eastern helps new students get settled in and get used to life away from home.
In three sentences eastern illinois is a place that runs on students who are hard-working and dedicated to their studies. eastern always encourages their students to get involved with their clubs and activites, there is a place for everyone at eiu. eastern illinois is a place that is a friendly, academic and welcoming place.

Clubs and Activities variety of sports clubs, frats, sororities, always something to do plus community volunteering
Great for these types of students students that like a small university where your a name and not a number. small classrooms and instructors that are always available with an open door policy
Bang for the buck very affordable with a tuition freeze, book rentals and great meal plans. coach services for the holidays and spring break as well as shuttles to walmart, and various locations off campus

Food and Dining there are plenty of choices on campus. stevenson is probably the best place to go for food. they have sandwiches/wraps/salads on one side and the other side has made to order omelets/burritos/etc.
Dorm Life the dorms are awesome. the freshmen usually stay at carman hall and that's where i met all my good friends.
Academic Rigor the classes aren't as big as i thought they would be. i only have one class that has more than 100 people in it, but it's an intro to psychology class (gen. ed.)
Tips for prospective students if you plan on joining a sorority or fraternity, this is definitely the place for you! but even if you're not planning on going greek, eastern is a wonderful college.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus police makes its presence known, but not in an intimidating way. The officers look out for us!
Greek Life Greeks have a large presence on campus...but, they do not overwhelm it.
Clubs and Activities Many academic and social clubs here on campus. A particular favorite of mine is the Equestrian Team.
Great for these types of students Low-key students would love it here. It's very friendly and laid-back. But, students do work hard here.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Pemberton Hall is haunted!
Bang for the buck I can't stress enough how much money students save by being able to rent their textbooks here instead of having to pay for them.
What to do for fun Eastern is in Charleston, Illinois. It's a small, college town. But, the residents here love us. You're in college, right? Get creative--you'll find plenty to do.
Food and Dining There is a wide variety of food and dining options available on campus. And, the food is fresh and healthy!
Dorm Life Dorms are safe, secure, and clean. Pemberton Hall is the oldest dorm in the state of Illinois...and, according to legend--is haunted!
Academic Rigor Honestly, Eastern is best for good students. But, no...it's not the Ivy League.
Tips for prospective students If affordability is a consideration for you--Eastern offers a quality education at a very affordable price. And, keep in mind--you are not required to purchase textbooks for you classes here at Eastern. It's one of the few schools in the country that still has a textbook rental service.
In three sentences A warm, friendly campus community--Eastern is truly awesome. For a small, Midwestern university, it can't be beat. I love it here!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you come from a big city you will think charleston is small and there is nothing to do. The campus is a decent size, not to big and not to small. So if you don't want to be in a very large campus then this is the place for you.
Tips for prospective students Have fun but not too much fun. I wont lie and say that I don't hear about weekend parties all the time. Stay focused and you will be okay. Be used to being in a decently small area.
Bang for the buck The only problem I have is the student service and finacial aid buildings. They arent that great at helping. You pretty much have to know what questions to ask and everything about money is up to you! I wish they were more helpful. Everything else is great though. I learn alot. I can go to the rec center to work out. There is a health services building and other fun things like bowling!
Am enjoying being here I love Eastern. It is my favorite place to be. The campus is amazing, especially our art center, Dounda. I even love the town of Charleston itself. The residence halls are great! There are a lot of off campus housing to look at. It is overall a great place!
Am learning a lot The teachers I have had have all been great. I learn a lot from each and every one of them. I would say that the professors of my intended major are the best. They really know what they are talking about and seem to greatly enjoy what they do.

Tips for prospective students The campus is beautiful and has an amazing castle. Who else can say they go to classes in a castle?!:)
Bang for the buck The textbook rental is great because you rent all your books and don't have to pay full price. Most of the books are new editions. There are 4 dining halls to choose from and the union.
Am enjoying being here There isn't much to do here, but there is so many activities and extra-curriculars for everyone. Making friends is easy. The people you see in your classes will more than likely be in another class or two with you again. Close knit community:)
Am learning a lot The classes are good and the teachers really care about their students...especially in the upper level classes.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Eastern is great for you if you are Passionate about your major and are looking forward to having a great college experience. I would tell someone to come here if they are looking forward to building relationships with their professors and classmates.
Tips for prospective students When you arrive at Eastern i suggest that you have a clear idea of what you may be interested in majoring in. But if you don't i suggest you visit the counselors at the student success center. Also it is really great to get involved with the many different activities on campus which will help with networking.
Bang for the buck Attending Eiu will definitively save you money if you cannot afford to spend your life's savings on college or even if you are not getting any support from your parents. The tuition is affordable and i believe worth it.
Am enjoying being here Most people want to attend a huge big ten school, but EIU to me is a great campus and has a great environment. The campus is small but big enough so that you will receive a college experience. The people are friendly and just exert Panther pride. I would tell everyone to attend EIU. Its a nice place.
Am learning a lot I believe that EIU strives to provide a great education for the students. In my classes if i find that the teachers want the students to think outside the box and have that interest to learn new things. i find my classes to be very informative. When i leave my classes there are a lot of other opportunity's for me as a student to learn something. Whether its taking a visit to career services or attending a forum ran by student government i am always getting new information.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Eastern is a teacher's college historically, and most of the people here are still education majors. The second most popular is psychology (I should know, since I'm a psych major), and the department is well-staffed. Anyone from a small-town atmosphere will enjoy Eastern; those from larger cities like Chicago and St. Louis may complain that there's nothing for them to do.
Tips for prospective students *Prepare for school spirit! We have so much Panther Pride here! *Bring an empty stomach! The food in our dining halls is actually decent! *Go to the library; the selection of movies alone is fantastic, not to mention the amount of journals, magazines, books, musical scores, and graphic novels [my favorite] is enormous. *Check out the Doudna! It's the weirdest, most amazing building you'll ever see.
Bang for the buck University Board always has something planned for students, including mass amounts of freebies. I have so many Eastern t-shirts, I could wear them for two weeks without a repeat. Some of the fees on our bill I feel are unwarranted, but for the amount you will learn, the fact that you don't have to buy textbooks (we rent them!), and the free stuff (t-shirts, movies, bingo nights, etc.) make it a fairly good deal. Plus, Eastern has the lowest tuition of any state school in Illinois, which is quite a perk.
Am enjoying being here I love campus life so far. The resident halls are well made for the most part, the RAs are fabulous, and the variety of RSOs available to students is astounding. I'm involved in groups for my major and minor, as well as other social interests. Charleston is rather small as far as cities go, but for a small-town girl like me, it's all I need. Anything you can't find here can be found either down the street in Mattoon or up north in Champaign.
Am learning a lot I came from a very small town, where the high school curriculum was pathetically lax, so being in college has been a wonderful way to spread my wings and expand my knowledge base. Eastern is great for that, because it has small class sizes and teachers that actually care whether or not you are learning and understanding the lecture and materials. I often sit back and say, Hey, I learned something today. And it felt really good!

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Get involved! There are so many activities that you can get involved in and meet new people through. Don't worry about what people think about you. You are in college now so you should live the life you want to live because these should be the best four years of your life. So live them how you want to live them!
Bang for the buck Eastern Illinois is one of the cheapest public schools in the state of Illinois and you would not think that through the campus or the faculty. The faculty surprise you with what they know and don't take their paychecks into consideration when helping students. You also rent your textbooks, which means you just have to pay a set fee in your tuition and you get all your textbooks. I saved so much money because I don't have to buy my textbooks like other colleges do.
Am enjoying being here I love the people that I have meet through my classes and other school activities. There is a group for everyone and everyone is very friendly to one another. People say hey to each other even if you don't know them at all. It is a very friendly campus and that is one thing that makes me love Eastern.
Academic Rigor Coming from a high school where teachers are always pushing you to excel really helped me through my gen eds in college because most of the teachers don't really care if you do your homework or come to class. However, coming from my high school I knew I had to put effort into my classes if I wanted to learn and to my surprise I learned many interesting things that I would have never learned on my own just reading from the text books.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Physics students Students not wanting a large campus Students needing 1 on 1 help Education majors
Tips for prospective students Get involved in clubs early. If you are a transfer student look for clubs and groups that are in your specific major. Also, DO NOT blow off your classes, this is not high school. The teachers do care, but they will not hold your hand.
Bang for the buck This school is one of the best around for a 4 year university price wise. You will get back whatever you put into this school and that is a very good thing for what you are paying.
Am enjoying being here I love the size of the campus and how friendly all the staff and faculty is but the town itself is very small for a college town. You need to get involved with things on campus in order to truly get the college experience here and that makes it hard for anyone with a job.
Am learning a lot I am a transfer student coming from a community college and I am still learning a lot. The major specific classes here are designed to push students and teach them everything they may need to know in their fields. The teachers push their students to learn and really want them to learn and care about their own education.

Tips for prospective students Definitely think about making EIU one of your college choices. You won't regret it. I never will.
Bang for the buck Don't have to pay for our textbooks - we can rent them for an easy $9.99/credit hour. So, for 15 hours, you pay less than $200. It's an amazing deal. Plus, tuition is pretty cheap for the quality of education you get here.
Am enjoying being here There are so many extracurricular activities and volunteer opportunities, especially within the residence halls. The students basically run the campus with all of the leadership positions and jobs given to us.
Am learning a lot The instructors aren't strangers to the students out here; they help A LOT. Lots of office hours. Lots of help outside of class, along with extra practice, etc.

Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to get involed. There are so many ways here at Eastern to get involved so you are almost guaranteed to find one way that you enjoy. It also is a great way to make new friends.
Bang for the buck There are a bunch of activites to do on campus that are fun, and most of them are free, including sports events.
Am enjoying being here I love the campus and, overall, I am having fun. It is easy to make friends and find where you fit in.
Am learning a lot Most of the teachers that I have had so far make learning easy and fun. And they actually show concern for your grade and are open to helping you in any way necessary.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students *Education Majors: great education * Those that like the small town life * Looking for a moderate size school (11,000)
Tips for prospective students *GET INVOLVED! there are so many different things to do on campus, there is something for everyone. *Live in the dorms: at least for your first year or two. Living in the resident halls are the best way to make friends. My closest friends are all ones that live in my building. * My recommendations for resident halls -I live in Lawson and really like it here. - Avoid Carmen if possible, its really far walk in the winter - If you want to be in the center of campus (and near the library) consider Weller, Ford or Mckinney *Take advantage of the REC center and the workout classes they offer. *Create an open line of communication with your academic advisor from the get go. They are here to help you succeed and find the right classes for you and your major *VISIT! schedule a college visit. or better yet, attend an OPEN HOUSE. There are 4-5 open houses a year and its a great way to get all your questions answered about the campus. Gives you an opportunity to get a feel for the campus and the town.
Bang for the buck Eastern was the most affordable school I applied to and I feel they offer me all that I was hoping for and more.
Am enjoying being here There are so many different ways to get involved on campus and unlimited opportunities right at your finger tips. You will find that your time here will be most enjoyable if you take advantage of everything that the campus has to offer.
Am learning a lot The professors here are all very knowledgeable about their subject matter. If you are eligible for the honors college I would highly recommend it. Honors classes are a lot smaller and are taught by an expert in that field.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for students that don't have a lot of money and students that want to stay in the state. Medium-size school.
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus; when I visited in high school, I just felt at home. Shadow day program is a really good idea if you know what major you are thinking of going into. You come to Eastern and meet up with someone in your major and go to their classes. It gives you a good feel of what the classes will be like.
Bang for the buck For in-state tuition, the bang for the buck is amazing. We rent books instead of buying them. You get a really good education for a fairly low public institution price.
Am enjoying being here I love the size of the campus. Walking to classes doesn't take long at all. There are a lot of clubs so whatever you're into there will probably be a club that fits you. If there isn't a club, then it is really easy to start one. Big enough that you don't know every person on campus but small enough that you aren't overwhelmed.
Am learning a lot A lot of the general education classes are reviews from high school but go more in depth. Classes towards your major are great. 95% of the teachers I have had so far have been great. Mostly smaller classes of 20-some people make it easy to get to know people and get to know the teachers. Teachers are understanding and always have time to help outside of class.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students who want a good education but also want to have fun!
Tips for prospective students Make use of all that the University has to offer. All the different departments offer some kind of tutoring. Also Eastern is a beautiful campus so make sure you drink in its beauty!
Bang for the buck Eastern is a big school with a small school feel. There are many different people to meet but the campus is relatively small and the classes are also smaller. You can make Eastern as big or as small of a school as you want to. Whichever way you want it, it's definitely a good price!
Am enjoying being here Being at Eastern is amazing! I am on the cross country team and i love all my team mates. They are all good students so we just hang out together, or sometimes we study. Every one is so nice here that it is super easy to make new friends! The university offers many different types of activities there is always something fun to do!
Am learning a lot All the teacher are really great here! The class size is pretty small in general so each student gets a lot of individual attention. Also the teachers make themselves very available for help, or just to talk to! All the teachers are great and very knowledgeable about what they are teaching. I am definitely learning a lot!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students I feel that students that are looking for a low key, small college, and the not overwhelming feeling should definitely look into Eastern.
Tips for prospective students If you are at all interested in Eastern apply. The application is very easy. Then please come visit our campus. Once you set foot on campus you will feel at home. And even if you don't you will still enjoy the experience you had during your visit.
Bang for the buck As a high school senior coming from a not so rich family I was worried about paying for college. Looking at prices was a big deal for me. Eastern's price is not unreasonable. In fact, I found it very reasonable and I feel I am getting my money's worth.
Am enjoying being here Eastern's campus is small, but not the size of a penny. It takes me about 7 min at most to get to my farthest class. I love this because one I don't have to walk far, and two because it is easy to navigate. All halls besides Carmen are on the same block. And the rec center is just across one of the streets around campus. On my first visit here I was welcomed with open arms and everyone was super nice.
Am learning a lot I come from a small high school, my class was about 85 people so my high schoo classes were small. I did not want something overwhelming in college where I felt i wouldn't learn from a big classroom. Here at Eastern the classes are small. You have an opportunity to have one on one time with your teacher. Learning in this type of setting helps me because I am able to get on a personal level with my teacher and feel comfortable asking any questions.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students I would highly advise coming to visit Eastern. The school itself is large with about 10,000 undergraduates but the campus feels small and you do get to know people quickly. Very seldom to I ever walk to class and not see someone I know. Visiting campus is the best way to know what school is right for you.
Bang for the buck I believe Eastern is a really good value. When I first visited, the tour guide said that Eastern is one of the cheapest state schools in Illinois (for in-state residents). But its still a good value. Plus renting our books instead of buying them is a huge plus. Instead of buying big bulky textbooks that could be up to $80, we rent them for about $10 a credit hour, so if you only take 15 credit hours, your books only cost you just below $150.
Am enjoying being here I love being at Eastern. Although I do miss my family sometimes, I have a great time. While there's not a whole lot to do around the town, you can find something to do on campus. With my friends, we go bowling, watch a movie in our residence hall basement, have game nights. Plus our Resident Advisor on our floor does fun activities once a month. There's never a dull moment.
Am learning a lot I really enjoy EIU. The classes that I'm taking are really interesting. I am currently a freshmen and have already taken 4 classes for my major. I think that is really nice to already be starting to get involved with what I actually want to do and not just taking gen eds. However, the gen eds that I am taking are really interesting, such as the evolution of jazz and rock and introduction to sociology.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Like I said before go to office hours for you classes. If your teacher knows your name and your face you will for sure do better in the class. Also make sure you go to class and do your homework on time. But you have to make sure you leave time to have fun. Also one big thing that saved me at school is when you are signing up for your own classes take your time. You want to make sure you get all the teachers and time you want and do not stress out over it. It will all work out and make sure you use the website; ratemyprofessor.com. Most of the time your teachers will be on their and other students that took that teacher will tell you about the class and about the teacher. However, sometimes they are right on but other times they could be wrong so just stick with your gut.
Bang for the buck College is a lot of money but it is totally worth it. Get loans and pay it off you need to and it is the cheapest school in IL. I love it here you will too.
Am enjoying being here Yes I was home sick the first year. However, the more you spend here the better it become. My tip is as a freshmen try not to go home every weekend only once a month if you HAVE TOO... It will be easier for you to get use to it if you do not keep going home.
Am learning a lot Yes...I love living on campus and my teachers are great. Just remember if you need help in a class ask for help!!!! GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!!!!!!1

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Eastern is great for students that have a fun and exciting life, but not overly exciting. Eastern is a great campus, there are cool parties to go to and many formal events to attend. There are plenty of things to do. EIU is great for students that like to party, but it's also great for students that are more laid back and reserved.
Tips for prospective students Be friendly! The people here are, it will be a lot easier to make friends and enjoy your time here. Join clubs and intramural sports too. It helps because after classes you have a lot of down time. DON'T PROCRASTINATE ON HOMEWORK...get it done when it is assigned. Trust me, getting your homework done early will be the greatest habit you could have.
Bang for the buck In my eyes Eastern is definitely better than a lot of schools. Here we don't buy our books, we are able to rent them for around 200 bucks a year. THAT'S IT!!!! We get all of our books for 200 bucks all year, but of course we have to return them. Also there's a shuttle bus that takes us around Charleston to stores and stuff. Eastern is a lot cheaper than the schools my friends have gone to.
Am enjoying being here Although Charleston is a small town and there's not much to do in it, Eastern makes up for that. There's a lot to do on campus that is fun and cheap. It's easy to make friends here, and it would be very helpful to make plenty of them. A lot of the time when there's nothing going on my friends and I have the greatest time hanging out, and we usually end up doing the stupidest things.
Am learning a lot I am currently enrolled in mostly General Education classes, and for me it wasn't hard to transfer to college classes from high school. The classes here are fun and enjoyable, I like a lot of my teachers.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Looking for a moderate sized school with a very friendly and welcoming environment. Interested in pursuing a career in teaching or still undecided. Wanting to go to a state school but not spend a ton of money for four years of college.
Tips for prospective students Get involved early on, Eastern has a lot of clubs, activities and intramural sports for people to join. It really helps to get involved in something down here even it is just getting to really know the people on your floor. Since Charleston is a small town there is not much to do and Eastern is definitely a get out of it what you put into it school.
Bang for the buck A nice four year college for students looking to teach or still trying to figure out there major. One of if not the cheapest state schools in Illinois and an overall nice campus and community
Am enjoying being here The residents halls are all nice and the college offers a lot of activities such as weekly movie nights in Buzzard Hall. However, Charleston is a small town with a limited selection of restaurants and stores. Walmart is the main store college students go to.
Am learning a lot The Gen. Ed. classes are all enjoyable and my major classes were taught by teachers who knew their subjects very well.

Am enjoying being here The campus offers a lot of various activities that suit many different people.
