Am learning a lot
Hampton University is an excellent school when it comes to academics.l The professors are very interested in their students. They provide office hours as well as email addresses in order for their students to contact them. All of my professors responded to my emails in a timely manner. I also recieved my test grades with in a 48 hr time frame. Al of my professors were welcoming and available for me to talk to if i had any concerns.
Am enjoying being here
I enjoy the campus life. We call it our home by the sea. The xampus is very pretty. It is also filled with excitement and activities. For example, our student center containts a bowling alley, movie theatre, pool room, fitness room and a dance room. Every Friday there ie a 12:00 to 2:00. There is a dj and other activities during that time. There are sometimes concerts and comedy shows to attend. Trey Songs performed at Ogden Hall last year. Marlyn Wayans also came to campus to talk to us about the Obama election.
Tips for prospective students
I recommend prospective students to visit the campus and tour the dorms.l Some dorms have air conditioning and some do not. It is good to try to get to know your dorm director in advance and to form a relationship with him or her. My dorm director was Ms. Wilkins and i think she is one of the best. Your dorm director will be one of the most helpful people during your freshman year as well as your RAs. Good luck with your quest for finding the right school. I am proud Pirate!
Great for these types of students
Hampton University is a great school for people who need guidance and structure. During the first semester of your freshman year, you will have a curfew. There are some students that come to school to party and enjoy being away from home. Hampton provides the means to control those situations. The rules that Hampton has reminds the students of the reasons that their parents sent them off to school. I am thankful for that. I completed my freshman year with a 3.74.

Did learn a lot
Class sizes as far as the number of students is concerned are small. Which leaves plenty of room for a more interactive classroom experience as well as giving the student an opportunity for a one-on-one relationship with their teachers/professors. Students are treated as more than just a number in the grade book, teachers take pride in their work and make you (the student) their number 1 priority.
Did enjoy being here
Hampton's campus is beautiful! Everything from the buildings, landscapping, faculty and staff were just amazing. Living on campus for the first year reall allowed me to get the full college experience...Dorm life, events at the student center, and althetics just to name a few were all a once in a lifetime opportunity. Nothing else can compare to college life. Hampton is very strong on family and once you become a true Hamptonian you are family. The atmosphere that surrounds the entire campus is that of love, compassion, strength, and hope. Everyone there only wants the best for you and will do anything and everything to help you reach your goals.
Bang for the buck
Although Hampton is an exensive school it is well worth it. The campus is to die for. Hampton is on the list of best HBCU's in the country....and that is no joke. The education you will receive is excellent. I believe that there shouldn't be a price on education because that's what is going to prepare and mold you for your future.
Tips for prospective students
Make sure that you schedule a campus tour and visit the dorms. Take time to do research on the school and it's history as well as the program for your desired major. Enter Hampton with an open mind and heart and be as active as possible.
Great for these types of students
Hampton is for someone who wants to get that traditional HBCU experience. A person who is about their business and sees themselves going somewhere in the future. Set the bar high and only good things will come. You can do anything you put your mind to.

I love the rigorous curriculum of Hampton University. I am intellectually challenged in the classroom as well as outside. The teachers are very invested in their students' success. They are willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that their students succeed.
Am enjoying being here
I enjoy being at Hampton very much. As an incoming freshman a new environment took a little getting use to, but I love my school. The campus is beautiful and there are many clubs, groups and activities to choose from. I am currently a member of both the University and Concert Choirs and enjoyed the experience last year. I anticipate that this year's experience will be just as if not more fulfilling than last year's.
Bang for the buck
I believe that I am receiving a good education at Hampton University.
Tips for prospective students
If you are considering or have been accepted to Hampton University, first, congratulations. Second, this school is for students that are dedicated to their studies. Yes, we have a good time, but grades definitely come first. Finally, if you are not from Virginia and you are not use to being away from home, this is not the school for you.
Great for these types of students
Hampton University is good for all types of students. If you were a top the of your graduating class, your will excel at Hampton. If were not the at the top class, maybe you were just an average student, you still have the opportunity to excel at Hampton.

Hampton University is an extremely strict insitution, were freshman are given a curfew and have limited freedoms. This maybe in order to have control over the freshman class and have them focus on school work, but to those who are mature, this is a nuisance. Besides this the faculty are very helpful and want to see you succeed and the big brother, big sister program is excellent and Hampton University a big family.
Tips for prospective students
Utilize your big brothers and sister they will help guide you and don't worry too much about curfew, freshman only have curfew till homecoming. In addition to this, go to pre-college you will meet a lot of people and have college credits already going into your freshman year; which makes that year so much more easier.
Academic Rigor
As an electrical engineering major and midshipman in NROTC, the course load is extremely hard. As a freshman I had 17 credits during the fall and 20 credits during the spring.
Dorm Life
Harkness Hall is the best dorm with the largest rooms, however the dorm director is very strict. James Hall is less strict and you will have the most freedom.
Food and Dining
The food is sometimes amazing and then other times horrible.
What to do for fun
The school offers a lot of fun things to do and sponsors many parties in order to keep kids from drinking. Everyone goes to these parties and I'm glad Hampton does this.
Bang for the buck
Through the parties and extras Hampton offers its students, they really do give you a lot of bang for the buck.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
Hampton doesn't really have any unusual traditions, but they are very traditional.
Great for these types of students
Anyt type there are every color and creed of students at Hampton.
Clubs and Activities
They're are numerous clubs and activities like student government, major specific clubs, and student leaders.
Greek Life
Greek life is amazing with the Divine 9 strolling through the campus during 12 to 2.
Campus Safety
There is a 24/7 police force the keeps Hampton safe.

Hampton University is a diverse institution with a meaningful legacy and beautiful campus. It is a great college to learn the essence of professionalism and importance of upholding principles. While Hampton is about business, it is also a place to socialize, interact and learn about students and facilitators from different places.
Tips for prospective students
-Be open minded to knew and different people and potential experiences.
-If your grades start to slip, speak with a counselor immediately.
-Don't be afraid to get involved.
-Try to maintain a positive mindset.
-Complete scholarships!
Academic Rigor
Hampton University does have tedious courses, but it depends on how well you are in a particular subject to depend on how well you will do. In my opinion, the courses that are the lightest work are the ones of that are in your freshman year. However, because they are lighter in work doesn't mean you should take your work for granted.
Dorm Life
Dorm Life is fun. You get to meet people from different places and share great times together. Dorm coordinators usually come up with events hosted at your dorm so everyone can interact. You do have to share bathrooms however. Sometimes that can be an issue, but that is common among college dorms. At Hampton, freshman must adhere to a curfew at 11pm for the first two months until Homecoming unless your an architecture major like me of course. Projects must get completed! Luckily, the good out weighs the bad overall living at Hampton, so there's nothing to worry about.
Food and Dining
The food at Hampton is satisfactory. There will be days where the food is better than others. Common food served are cheeseburgers, fries, chicken, fish, fruits, salads and more. As my first year came to an end the Student Government Association worked on getting better foods served at the caf and it was a success. Hot wings , Buffalo & teriyaki wings were served and it made the students happy. Also ice cream with variety was served. A lot of times students eat out or order out. So theres many choices to choose from. All in all, students who attend Hampton university can cope with the food and dining.
What to do for fun
At Hampton, there is a weekly party at the student center from 12-2pm. That is usually a taster before the weekend where other parties will be held. Upperclassmen also usually hold parties and Greeks. There is also a party called the HU cab which runs a couple times. It is a classy event and a rewarding one to spend with friends. All lot of students spend the weekend out at the peninsula where they can go shopping and grab a bite.
Bang for the buck
Freshman orientation is one of the greatest times of the year for new Hamptonians. It is filled with events ranging from concerts to meet and greets. It is where many freshman meet their potential friends for a lifetime. The student leaders make it very exciting and try to get you feel comfortable at your new home. It is also very informative, letting you know about the campus, the legacy and principles upheld.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
Freshman have to attend Ogden a lot of times during freshman week and throughout the year. Informational events are held here and the attire is always business or casual. Also, from about 5-8 on various days the Greeks show out by Ogden and VC (which is a freshman girls dorm). Bemis is the architecture lab and here you will always find students studying, finishing projects and working hard in the wee hours of night. You might even catch the sleeping there!
Great for these types of students
Hampton University is great for social students and quiet students. Social students will be most often looked at as the life of the party, but don't get them wrong. They know when their work is to be done. Conservative students are also contributive because the balance out the institution making it a great place to seek and achieve independence. You can't go wrong at Hampton!
Clubs and Activities
There are various clubs and programs at Hampton. Some fall under a specific department. For example math club would fall under the mathematics department. There's choir, science clubs, honor societies, Caribbean organizations as well as African, Army ROTC, Navy ROTC, student leadership and many more organizations. There's a wide range of things to get involved in.
Greek Life
Greek Life at Hampton is exciting! Some complain that there isn't enough, but Hampton's goal is to keep you focused on why you are there. Greek like is balanced out. Not too much, not too little. The Greeks get specific weeks to themselves as the year progresses and hold variety of events and activities at the student center engaging as much students as they possibly can.
Campus Safety
Campus safety is great. There is a 24/7 security check at the front of the campus ensuring students safety. ID is a must. There are also health care services available to students who need it. In addition, Hampton has 24 hour foot and vehicle patrol making sure students are adhering to the rules of the University and that temporary outsiders are acting accordingly. There is also a text-alert where students can receive updates from the university's police department.

Hampton University definitely goes by it's motto which is the Standard of Excellence. This University holds a plethora of opportunities. Any individual can succeed here.
Tips for prospective students
Do not be easily influenced by the crowd and what everyone is doing at the time. Pay close attention to your freshman year because it gets harder after this year.
Academic Rigor
The course work is relatively easy as a freshman. As you get more and more into your major your course work will increase.
Dorm Life
I love the dorm life. I am currently staying in Twitchell Hall and we have one of the best lobbies and we are one of the best freshman girls dorm.
Food and Dining
The school has just opened their new cafeteria. This cafeteria has an awesome view and the food has it's up days and down days. It is mostly good though. There are other places to dine that are either on campus or close to the campus.
What to do for fun
There is always a party on the weekends. Also the peninsula and movie theater are not far away. There are plenty of clubs and activities to become involved in.
Bang for the buck
It's best to carpool or get a big brother or big sister who has a car because taxis can become very expensive.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
It is said that if any individual who has not graduated from Hampton University walks across Ogden Circle, they will not graduate on time. i don't know if it's true but I'm not about to test the theory.
Great for these types of students
If you love to socialize and network this is the school for you. If you are introverted upon entering the school , you will become more extroverted as you progress at the school.
Clubs and Activities
There are plenty of clubs and extracurricular activities to become involved in.
Greek Life
the Greek Life is great. A lot of sororities and fraternities have just come back this year.
Campus Safety
The campus is very safe. Police cars are always strolling the streets.

Tips for prospective students
The best tips is to manage your time. College is so different than high school, meaning much more responsibility and experience makes you mature and grow much faster. It is your job as a student to maintain your grades, your social image ( and yes networking is very important) and your financial status.
Academic Rigor
As my high school pre-warned me, there are many foreign professors. In this case it is my job as a student and an adult to stay on myself to work harder and even stay on my teacher to help me succeed. The best thing about my teachers is they do not baby me but push me to reach heights even higher than I thought I could achieve.
Dorm Life
Although Hampton University is a very old school, with building being somewhat run-down when compared to the new ODU; i love attending HAmpton University. Dorm life is an experience between meeting new friends and making life-long partnerships. I have also made it a habit t befriend the people in my dorm to make life easier, when dealing with friendships and group projects and even study sessions.
Food and Dining
The worst part about the school is probably the cafe food. Although sometimes their food is good, I am very tired of baked chicken and rice and most of their food has no seasoning. The cafe ice cream is great and the staff is as well. I have made some friends in the staff with some of the young as well as the older staff members and for that I am grateful.
What to do for fun
Hampton University is not a boring school but it is located in a boring area; Hampton, VA. I enjoy spending my team with my best friends and joining a dance team known as Majestic. Social Networking is great for friendships, business and even educational success.
Bang for the buck
Although I do not exactly have the money to attend Hampton University, I chose this school because I knew it would lead me to personal growth as well as a professional one. On a social level I have joined one of the best dance teams belonging to a college: Majestic. Overall I am glad I chose HU and I will do anything to make sure I remain there.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
The best location on campus is the waterfront. It offers a beautiful view of amazing sunsets and sunrises. One section of it as my best friends and myself call it The Oasis of Peace offers a serene place where I can spend alone time with my thoughts or enjoying the company of a special someone.
Clubs and Activities
Hampton University is home to many great athletes; dancers, cheerleaders, football players and of course basketball players. The only thing we need more of is school spirit and it is up to HU and their students to do something about it. HU students are very dedicated when they have a reason to be.
Greek Life
After seeing movies like Stomp the Yard and even researching Greek Life, i had very high expectations. Unfortunately HU did not meet those expectations in their Greek area.
Campus Safety
Hampton University is not by any means, an open campus and this allows me to feel safe at all times.

The classes are small so you get that wonderful one on one experience with your professors. The professors are passionate about their job. What I enjoy about my classes is that the teachers don't read from the textbook they give examples from their own lives. The teachers have office hours so if you need extra help they are free to help.
Am enjoying being here
I love being at Hampton. It is in a rural area but there is never a dull moment. I think since we have people from every where like CA, FL, TX, NY, NJ and the other 45 states you learn a lot about different musics, styles , dances and even food. It is an awesome experience. There is Greek life on campus so it is always exciting to see them stroll or stomp. Hampton is defiantly the HBCU to attend.
Bang for the buck
The food is good and the dorms are nice. The classes are great and the people are wonderful. I feel that the tuition is worth it all.
Tips for prospective students
Just be yourself and join as many clubs as possible. It is college so have fun but stay on top of you school work.
Great for these types of students
Great for anyone that is ready to break out of their shell.

Hampton University is a great school to achieve academic achievements. It is a school that challenges you yet the reward of graduating is well worth it. I would highly recommend Hampton University for anyone looking to succeed and go far in their career path.
Tips for prospective students
Be sure to study and stay on top of your studies! As an incoming student, it can be very easy to get distracted with the social environment Hampton University has but it was very possible to balance both.
Academic Rigor
Hampton University is known for their academic excellence and have always been known for that. Classes are not difficult if you effectively study and use the resources available to you.
Dorm Life
The dorms are nice but their are some that could use some remodeling. Some dorms are assorted by GPA, others are same-sex. There is only one co-ed dorm but for the most part, they are very clean.
Food and Dining
The food that Hampton University serves is very good and our café has a section strictly with a healthier selection of food. The café food is never the same in one week so that is a plus because you won't get tired of the food fast.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
It is tradition that no one is allowed to walk across the Ogden Circle unless they are graduating or have graduated. it is said that one will not graduate on time if they step on it.
