Hcc is a beautiful campus with many activities on campus as well as nearby, that will never leave you without something to do. The staff is always there for you willing to go the extra mile to help you when you need them. The cost is a major plus as well is the smaller class size.

    Campus Safety

There is a major problem on campus with drivers. Most students walk into the road or back out of parking spaces without looking, so you have to be really careful while looking for a parking space. Campus security can also be seen more often at the local post office than patrolling campus, so the students that park where they're not supposed to and/or drive recklessly rarely get caught.

    Clubs and Activities

The most popular clubs are mainly environmentally-themed. The only club I personally joined was Phi Theta Kappa, which is an honor society you have to be invited to. The chapter didn't do anything more than a couple of very small meetings (most of the members were online students) that were mainly awkward silence. But I will point out the faculty members in charge had just taken over the club and had no idea how to do things, so I was just a member at the wrong time. There's a good bit of campus events, and you can get extra credit for attending some of them like the lectures on the history of different holidays. But a lot of them take place when most students are in class, or end a few minutes after a class ends.

Great for these types of students

If you're planning on going into a wildlife or natural resources career, this is one of the best schools for it. This is also a good school if you want a degree in crafts like jewelry making or woodworking. For general education, this school is more for students who want a general Associate's degree for transferring to a 4-year college, or just a little more education after high school.

    Bang for the buck

This is a pretty inexpensive school, and the education kinda reflects it. I came to HCC to get my general education closer to home with plans to transfer to a 4-year college afterward. I got a basic, minimal education for the minimal price so I technically got what I paid for.

    What to do for fun

Most downtime is spent in The Sunrise Cafe, whether you're talking to friends, surfing the internet on your laptop, or playing card games. The library is good for downtime if you want a quieter atmosphere, especially the 2nd floor. There's also a disc golf course and walking trails on campus, which are also open to non-students.

    Food and Dining

Cafeteria or restaurant-wise, there's only The Sunrise Cafe, but it's mainly used by the early college students. I've personally never eaten there but the food my friends have gotten looked pretty greasy and gross. Most people bring a lunch from home, and the only off-campus food close by is a Burger King. There's a lot of vending machines on campus, and they have a wide variety of items to choose from.

    Academic Rigor

The workload really depends on the teachers. There are some that will just assign textbook reading (which you can get away with not doing), and then there will be some that expect you to turn in a different 4- page paper every class period. Overall it's a slightly under-average workload.

    Tips for prospective students

Know where you can park! The parking lots right by the class buildings have spaces only a couple of hours a day, but it doesn't vary much. Unless you have classes after 12:30 or 1:00, you'll have about a 5 minute walk from a parking space further down the hill. Also be sure to check your school email! Whenever a class is cancelled by weather or the instructor, this is the only way you're told about it and how to find the make-up assignment.

    In three sentences

Haywood Community College is a semi-compact campus with a forest-like appearance. There's a varied student body and workload can vary for each student. It's a great place to get a ground-floor education to prepare for bigger things.

Great for working students and for parents who are wanting to better themselves.

    none

    Bang for the buck

With a community college you get the same education and the same classes that are needed and taught in the four year universities. The difference is the price, HCC has helped me financially by being so inexpensive.

    What to do for fun

There are many clubs on campus that offer a wide variety of activities that could interest even the most uninteresting person

    Food and Dining

There is a small cafeteria on campus and the food is rather filling and well needed.

    Dorm Life

    none

    Academic Rigor

The teachers here treat you like an adult and it is up to the students to do the work and keep the line of communication open.

    Tips for prospective students

Study hard and attend class on a regular schedule. The more you miss, the less you will learn.

    In three sentences

Haywood Community College is an exceptional school that focuses on its students. With smaller classrooms and fewer students the teachers care about the student not just the grades. Every staff member that I have met is truly concerned about the education of the students both on and off campus.

    What to do for fun

The scenery around the campus is beautiful! I recommend a nice long walk or hike to distress and regroup.

    Food and Dining

There are several small restaurants nearby. It would be nice if there was a wider array of options for individuals with allergies and things of that nature, though.

    Dorm Life

I life off-campus. There are no dorms at Haywood Community College. There are several apartments nearby, though.

    Academic Rigor

I have taken all of my prerequisites for the nursing program at HCC, and am now entering into the nursing program this fall. The classes are not easy, but they prepare students for real-life application. That's what truly counts in my opinion.

    Tips for prospective students

Communication is key! Make sure you communicate your needs with your instructors so that they best know how to serve and instruct you. There are truly no dumb questions, so don't feel silly approaching them with your concerns and questions.

    In three sentences

I love the campus in Clyde, NC, it is absolutely beautiful and drew me here. The teachers and administrators are extremely helpful and willing to listen and go above and beyond. I transferred from another college, and the difference is incredible!

Campus Security Officers are routinely present all across campus, and they are always just one call away if you need them. Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

In 1991, there was a donation of a 320-acre tract of forest land to the Haywood Community College Foundation by Raymond and Bernice Fowler. This tract of land is known as the Raymond J. Fowler conservancy and teaching forest. This donation enabled the college to have a field teaching forest for its Natural Resources program.

    Bang for the buck

Haywood Community College tuition is about $2,000 an academic year. Earning a Associate transfer degree at this institution can save you a lot of money. The Associate in Art or Applied Science transfer degrees allow students to complete the Freshman and Sophomore years of Bachelor degree at a Community College price.

    What to do for fun

Haywood Community College is home to many clubs that participate in a wide range of activities. Haywood Community College is also a certified arboretum, so the campus is home to a lot of natural beauty that is outlined with gardens and walking trails. We also have an 18 hole disk golf course!

    Food and Dining

The Sunrise Cafe is located on the bottom floor of the Freedlander Learning Center on campus. This cafe is operated by the county school system, and provides breakfast and lunch at very affordable cost.

    Dorm Life

Haywood Community College does not have on-campus housing. However, the campus is located conveniently close to many housing options such as, apartment and condominiums.

    Academic Rigor

This school is filled with devoted students that share a common goal of success in academics. I feel that learning is a community effort, and the concept of community is strongly emphasized at Haywood Community College. Instructors present coursework to students by utilizing multimedia activities and direct involvement in the classroom.
