Categories Comments In three sentences My plans were always to attend Ohio State University simply because my cousin attended there, but my sophomore year in high school we did a project on colleges research and I chose Lamar University as one. I did my research and I loved it. Just by words I feel like this just might be the school of my dreams. I love how it's also close to home but also have somewhat far.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck compared to other universities, the price of tuition is more reasonable than most. also, you pay for the rec, which is the exercising center, the library and all of its functions, parking, and a ton of other campus perks. i compared my tuition to my friend's the other day who attends baylor, and mine was way cheaper for great classes.
What to do for fun definitely go to the football games! you get free shirts, great entertainment from the lamar university dance team and the lu cheerleaders, and a competitive game between our boys and the other teams. also, getting involved in an organization on campus keeps you feeling like you are apart of the campus life, even if it means exercising at the rec.
Food and Dining the food and dining is fairly decent but slightly overpriced if you do not have a meal plan. the dining hall has a variety of foods, including home cooked meals, great breakfast pancakes, mexican food, italian food, deli food, a grill, and a salad and drink bar. mirabeau's is also a great place to grab a quick coffee and study before class, if you live at home and do not want to drive and come back to campus.
Dorm Life i do not personally live in the dorms, because i live at home. however, my friend's dorm is a great size for incoming freshmen and is very roomy. the security is also very adamant about who comes and goes into the buildings, so you feel very safe in the dorms.
Academic Rigor the academics are amazing here at lamar, because the classes are challenging without being too overwhelming. the teachers are very knowledgeable and are mostly available to help you. also, make sure you put in the study time for exams because some teachers put trick questions in tests that contain the little details of the section.
Tips for prospective students incoming students, schedule your academic advising appointment early, because you want to make sure you get the first choice in the required classes that are mandatory. the advisors are very helpful and are 99% available for any questions you may have. also, do not put off studying or take it lightly, because your final grade reflects the effort you put into the semester.
In three sentences i always knew that i would be going to school at lamar university because it is close to home, and i wasn't ready to leave my family. it is just the right size for me, because it is not too overwhelming but not too small either. it is also very close to home, which i love.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Police station on campus, I always felt safe.
Greek Life HUGE. The Greeks are everywhere. The first month expect to be asked several times.
Clubs and Activities There are plenty of clubs, although if you want to join you have to research, they won't do too much advertising.
Great for these types of students Any student! We hold the most international students in Texas. All are welcome and diversity is normal.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus This year we started decorating a statue for every home football game we have. It's fun to walk past it and see it's ridiculous costume for the week. There's a bonfire in the fall and that's pretty nice.
Bang for the buck At the end of everything, you will still get your degree for a semi reasonable price. They are raising tuition in fall 2016, so that won't be fun.
What to do for fun Visit the small pond, or sit in the quad. I wish there were more options.
Food and Dining There's not many options of places, so if you live on campus and gate a meal plan (you have to) then you might get bored. The buffet (dining hall) is great though. There's a lot of choices in there.
Academic Rigor There's so many programs to help you pass or get tutored. In the library there's even a writing center to help any papers you have to turn in. Each class has its own difficulty, but the professors make it clear what they expect.
Tips for prospective students Just go to class, it really isn't hard to show up. Most classes have a grade with attendance, so right there that's an easy grade. Never shy away from asking your professor for help. Ever! It's not embarrassing and use their knowledge to get better grades.
In three sentences Lamar University really gives tips and tricks to help you with your experience. At the beginning of each semester there's a fun Week of Welcome filled with free food, games, and activities to do. Although it's a smaller campus, there's enough of a university feel to make the college experience nice.

Categories Comments Campus Safety We have our own police department that usually don't have much to do so they are on top of every little thing. They are always patrolling and the entrances to the dorms are guarded. They are very friendly and willing to talk with the students so they really do care about us. Some of them are students! We have emergency poles around campus so if you feel unsafe, just go over to one and they will either talk with you or someone will come and help you; whatever you need. We have a police station in the center of the campus (ish) and we have a Lamar transportation van thing that can get you most anywhere on campus and sometimes off if you don't feel comfortable walking. I don't know what the times for the Lamar transportation thing are though. Sorry :( It's very secure here but not suffocating.
Great for these types of students If you don't mind doing some work on your own and don't mind walking (the dorms can be far from the center of the classes depending on which one you live in) you'll enjoy it here. I'm originally from Houston so I'm disappointed in the lack of events and lack of traffic (yes, I miss my Houston traffic), but I still like it here. Go off campus to College St. and you'll find a lot of food places at which you can eat. I'd definitely recommend engineering students to come here, but other majors will be perfectly comfortable here too. Pretty much anyone can come and be happy :)
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus During homecoming week Lamar Alive holds a scavenger hunt across campus! It's a lot of fun so I suggest you do that!
Bang for the buck Lamar is fairly cheap compared to other universities, but you still have to pay about $4k just to be a student. Meaning, you have to pay about $4k PLUS whatever your classes cost. You are required to buy a meal plan if you live on campus, which is kinda stupid but not too horrible. The quality of the classes is very good so I think you really get your moneys worth (though colleges all over should really lower their prices. They've risen way faster than it would be to compensate for inflation which is ridiculous but I'm just ranting now).
What to do for fun Lamar has Week of Welcome (WoW) which has a lot of activities for a week to two weeks. They had a color run last WoW and I walked it. It was a lot of fun! They have movies playing throughout the semester so make sure to catch at least one. There's usually free food for the first few people but you have to get there about an hour before to be one of the recipients. We have homecoming week during which there is a lot of free food, activities, and sometimes T-shirts! You should really try to go to at least one homegame and it doesn't even have to be football, though I do suggest it. We have the Spindletop museum just barely off campus. You could really bike over there and be just fine. It looks like a little old western town that tells the history of how Beaumont came to be. DEFINITELY go to that! :)
Food and Dining You have a few options for dining. The dining hall (dhall), Mirabeaus, and the Nest. The dhall is where you can use your dining meals. You swipe in and you can choose from the same general foods every day. During lunch and dinner, there's always pizza, some meat, hamburgers, and soup. There are other foods that vary. The food is always slightly different so you're not eating the exact same thing all the time. I advise you: get cookies when they are out!!! As soon as you walk in and if you see cookies, grab them first before you get your meal! They go quickly!! The food is almost always good! Make sure to go when it is a tour day. They serve the best food on tour days. Mirabeaus is like a little cafe kind of place that serves Starbucks. They say Starbucks but I believe it's really Seattle's Best. The food is good but you usually have to wait a while for your food to come out. The Nest is wonderful! It is a cafeteria that has a Southern/home style cooking section, a Tex-mex-ish section, a healthy section, Pizza Hut, and something else. You have to pay for your drink individually but it's all good. The Nest and Mirabeaus only accept dining dollars or cash. The dhall accepts cash or dining meals.
Dorm Life The dorms are nice for two people to share. You each get your own bedroom connected by a small living room area, and there is a bathroom with a door separating the sink area and the shower/toilet area. You need to swipe your ID to get into the dorm and after that you have to show it to a guard to be allowed to pass. You have the option to deadbolt your doors, both bedroom and regular dorm, if you'd like, so the dorms are pretty secure. Make sure that you either a. Don't eat stinky food; don't microwave a lot of smelly food (except for popcorn), or don't keep stinky food in the fridge. or b. Bring some sort of odor remover spray. The smell can stay for a while. Make sure to take out the trash every now and then. It will start to smell. We just got new washers and dryers in some of the dorms so they usually work pretty well, except for the one that sits by itself. Don't use that washer. Make sure to use a stacked one. Make sure to set a timer to let you know when your laundry is done. There's nothing worse than going to do your laundry and finding out that, while no one is actually using the washers and dryers, they are all full and you can tell that no one is coming anytime soon to pick it up. Your closet is about 5 feet wide,7+ feet tall (there is a shelf about 5 ft above the floor and a bar to hang clothes on just below it), and about a foot or 2 deep. Use your space wisely. You get 4 drawers, a desk, and a side table. If you'd like more room, I suggest splitting the drawers in half and sliding them under your bed; they were made to fit under there perfectly!
Academic Rigor The classes are not usually very hard but only if you apply yourself. If you slack off you should expect to get a low grade. I slacked off in one of my classes first semester and I was excited to know at the end that I was passing with a 75%. I had expected a 68% or so. Some classes are harder than others, obviously this will always occur. So make sure you go to office hours, tutoring sessions, study groups; whatever helps you! The professors do want you to do well in their classes, but they will not make it easy for you. They will challenge you and you should be ready to step up and meet the challenge. Otherwise, you'll fall behind and probably won't enjoy the outcome. Just make sure you do your homework, extra-credit (ALWAYS DO EXTRA-CREDIT!!!), and go to office hours if you need them to explain something. They are more than glad to help.
Tips for prospective students You don't need as much as you think. Bring the minimum on move in day (it'll be less of a hassle) and bring in decorations and extras later as you find you need them. Make sure to do laundry early or in the middle of regular class time. Otherwise you'll never be able to get it done. Go to your professors office hours! It helps!!!!! Take part in Week of Welcome (WoW). Just getting involved in some of the activities makes you feel more a part of Lamar. Go to at least one football (or another sport) game. Explore the campus with a friend. Just pick one random day and go exploring. You'll learn the campus and it will be a lot of fun! Bring some stuff home over Thanksgiving break. That way it'll be less stuff to bring back on move out day. Do the same for move out in the Spring. Bring stuff back slowly over the semester.
In three sentences Lamar is a good university with good professors and a good work ethic. The dorms and activities are up to or over par, and the campus is pretty. There are amazing people and annoying people, but you just have to try and be friendly and it really won't matter :).

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus, I would say, is very safe.
What to do for fun There is a swimming pool outside and inside along with a recreation center for students to enjoy.
Food and Dining The food was very good. There were plenty of options.
Dorm Life The dorms are quite big for two to stay in. When I went however, there was no wifi in the rooms.
Academic Rigor I have not seen all the academics but I can tell that the music department is very rigorous.
In three sentences Lamar is a small enough college to where are students can enjoy the company of one another and form long lasting relationships but big enough so that one can explore themselves. Lamar has a very safe environment since the campus is not too large.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Lamar is a very safe campus with its own police.
Bang for the buck Students at Lamar get a great education especially for the price.
What to do for fun There are all kinds of organizations to join, and they usually have fun events.
Food and Dining There are several eating establishments on campus. They are very good.
Dorm Life I do not live in the dorms so I cannot say what it is like.
Academic Rigor Lamar has high expectations for its students so some classes can be challenging, but it is always possible to make a good grade with sufficient studying.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to have regular attendance because Lamar is strict on its attendance policy, and immerse yourself in the community.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Excellent. Campus security is on constant patrol about campus both on foot and by car. All reports are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated. Emergency posts are located many spots throughout the campus.
What to do for fun Campus hosts a wonderful gym and recreational area. Various activities are available: indoor rock wall climbing, basketball, a full gym, two tracks (one indoor, the other outside), golf, organized classes such as yoga and Zumba. Campus also takes pride in its many sororities and fraternities who host and enjoy many events.
Food and Dining Offers a variety of food such as Pizza Hut personal pizzas, fried chicken and fries, burgers, baked potatoes and a selection of tex-mex dishes. I love getting the spicy beef nachos: a large plate covered in tortilla chips and my choice of toppings cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, salsa and spicy beef. Yum. I also enjoy the burritos, and tacos. They also offer sushi, which I thought was cool. It's prepared each morning and packaged. Quiet good.
Dorm Life Live off campus. Never in dorm.
Academic Rigor Excellent lectures, many courses require attendance of one on campus seminar usually an hour in duration. Some finals offered are comprehensive, others only over part of the semester materials. Tutoring services and math labs are available on campus for student use.
Tips for prospective students Take a tour, it's well worth it. If you do decide to enroll do so at the earliest opportunity to get the ball rolling then once enrolled check the email they assign to you very often as this is where they will send all info regarding requirements needed to fill. The staff is VERY helpful and the campus atmosphere is comfortable.
In three sentences The campus is well maintained, and fairly easy to navigate and find your way around. The campus offers a variety of food choices from chicken and fries to nachos and pizza. There are various locations to eat and relax. The campus offers an EXCELLENT gym facility for the students and organized classes for Zumba, yoga and others.

Categories Comments What to do for fun I'm personally not a party person but there are ALOT of clubs of varying insterests such as the Japanese entertainment club I'm apart of to clubs specifically to popular online games.
Food and Dining The dining hall makes it so easy to stick to a diet with the wide variety of food and drink.
Dorm Life Sometimes it can get rowdy but otherwise the staff are responsive to issues involving your room and its pretty nice that you don't have to share a bedroom with another person, so you have your own space.
Academic Rigor The right amount of ease yet challenge to help you actually pass through with out too much trouble.
Tips for prospective students Come here with your mind open because it is not as low grade as you would imagine a university in this area would be.
In three sentences A lot more fun than I expected and I feel its worth the low comparative tuition. I didn't know when I first applied but apparently Lamar University has one of the top nursing programs for a tuition of less than 5000$ per year I feel that is actually a steal when you look at other top medical schools. I also love how friendly and helpful all staff workers are, even if I've done something that I feel will frustrate or upset people such as me spilling a drink and requesting something to clean it myself the janitor told me no and did their self.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Beaumont is listed as the saddest place in America, you really need to have a car so that you can get out of the area on weekends. Basically everyone goes home on the weekends because it really is nothing to do in the area so you do not want to be stuck on campus alone.
Food and Dining Food is not the best all the time, and the dining hall hours suck it seems like whenever you are hungry its closed and it closes at 8. One place to eat in the set closes at like 2.
Dorm Life Living in the dorms are fine but they have strict rules on over night guest and you cant have visitors past a certain hour. We are adults and they give out way to many rules with signing in and out all our guest.
Academic Rigor Overall Lamar is a great school the student to teacher ratio is good. Professors really work with you and have very flexible office hours. Offers a variety of different classes.

Categories Comments Food and Dining The food is great in the Nest which is a student lounge that has a variety of foods. There is a new booth that has food that tastes as if you were at your house and your mother made it especially for you; it really makes you feel at home.
Dorm Life I lived on campus only for a short period of time but the security was great. I always felt safe to walk around if I needed to go somewhere. There are always fun activities going on in the dorm lounges that gives students opportunity to meet new people and become members of different organizations.
Academic Rigor The academics like I mentioned before are great and you can find a major that interests you the most.
Tips for prospective students If you are looking for a school that excels in the criminal justice, nursing, or just want an overall great college career experience Lamar University is the best choice. This university is always having opportunities available for students to volunteer and to me giving back to the community is very important.
In three sentences Lamar university is friendly and inviting to new students. They are always trying to come up with ways that benefit the students, faculty, as well as the surrounding community. Lamar also has an excellent Family and Consumer Science Program along with Criminal Justice.

Categories Comments Food and Dining Every now and again the food can be really great (holidays) but the dining hall serves the same thing pretty much everyday and the hours are somewhat inconvenient. There are other places to eat such as the nest which has some of the tastiest food and Mirabeau's which are both in 'the set'.
Dorm Life I've lived in the dorms before and as nice as they look there are downsides to living there. It's very expensive for what you're getting: paper-thin walls and floors, noisy neighbors, and the dining plan could be a lot better. Overall it could be better, although many are worse so be grateful.
Academic Rigor Academically the best programs are nursing and engineering, however that doesn't mean that the other colleges and aspects aren't great...these are just the most prominent. A vast majority of the classes are moderate although some are definitely easier than others.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you have a well thought out plan of any aspect of what you want to do, and if you don't know yet make sure to figure it out within your first year so that you aren't struggling forever. Figuring out what you want to do is only part of the battle, the other part has to do a lot with staying focused and doing well. Good luck, do well, and HAVE FUN! You're only young once!
In three sentences Lamar is a place where you can feel like home and family are important. Most of the teachers really care about your well-being more than thinking this is where I get my paycheck. The student body can be very school-spirited.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The Lamar campus is very safe. Lamar University police department will always be on the watch for any suspicious behavior. Also, if you are ever walking alone, and you are concerned, there are calling stations all across campus that call the police at the press of a button. It will pinpoint the location, and help you in whatever way possible.
Bang for the buck If you are looking for an affordable college, but also want the education you desire, Lamar University is the place to go. It is rich in academics without killing your wallet.
What to do for fun There are varieties of social clubs as well as activities to participate in. We have a driving range if you want to practice the swing. Lamar also has a recreational center which offers multiple rooms with exercise equipment. The rec center also has activities such as rock climbing, swimming, racquetball, and pool. Occasionally in the Setzer Center, there will be activities.
Food and Dining We have multiple locations to dine inside the campus. The dining hall is essentially a buffet, creating new arrangements of food every breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A restaurant named Mirabeau's. This restaurant on campus serves bakery items, breakfast and lunch items, and Starbucks.
Dorm Life The dorm life is a safe and secure one. Granted, we all have our fun of course. Each dorm hall is split into phases. Most dorms contain separate rooms for the roommates. If you get lucky, some have two sinks instead of one.
Academic Rigor The professors here all care about their job and passion. They teach with a sense of fire in their hearts for the subject. The size of the classes also allow the teacher to be one on one with the students. Making it easier for contact if the students have questions or concerns with the class.
Tips for prospective students Not only is it an all around, fantastic university, but if you plan to get a degree in engineering, English, or anything scientific. Lamar University is the place to go.
In three sentences Lamar University is a small university, but has built up a strong reputation. It has made its mark with solid departments in English, Science, and Engineering. Lamar may not be the big named university out there, but will certainly prepare you for what is ahead in life.

Greek Life The Greek life is not the best but there are still a lot of activities for fraternities and sonorities.
Clubs and Activities Crocket St. is 10/15minutes away from the campus for the 18 and up. There are other clubs and bars for 21 and up in Beaumont.
What to do for fun On campus there are activities for students in the Setzer center. There is not much to do on campus; it is better to drive into the city and enjoy the malls or the movies.
Food and Dining There are a couple of places to eat on campus. The dining hall is the main place for students to eat breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. It is an unlimited buffet giving a lot of varieties to students. There is also Mirabeau's with Starbucks and other snacks. The Nest is also a dinning place offering varieties. And inside the Rec center, there is a smoothie bar.
Dorm Life The dorms at Lamar are great. Every rooms have two bedrooms, a commun living room, a bathroom, and a restroom. There is a security at the entrance of each phases, making the place safe. The rooms are pretty big and in good condition.
Academic Rigor Acaedemically, the school has a good level. The core classes are not hard; classes get harder in the major you are following. Professors are willing to help if you have issues and a free tutoring is set to help students.
Tips for prospective students Lamar University is a school in Beaumont. It may seem to be a small city and not the best college in Texas, but people are what make the school special. The campus is pretty and the facilities are nice. The campus is still growing. Academically, the school is good and faculty members are really helpful.

Categories Comments Food and Dining You have several places to get food from. There is a Subway, Mirabeau, Dining Hall, and a restaurant called campus corner. They have excellent service, and great food. They make sure that you are able to get some of the major food groups, like meat, vegetables, and starch. They also taste really good.
Dorm Life The dorm life is very nice. You are supplied with furniture like a bed to sleep on, desk to do your work, and drawers and a closet to put your clothes up. you are able to bring anything that runs on electricity that doesn't run on to much watts. You get excellent service from the staff and there are security guards that make sure that keep everything peaceful.
Academic Rigor Lamar has difficult classes, but that is what makes the classes very good. The classes make you work hard to get good grades. You have to have good study habits, sharp wit, and excellent memory skills to get good grades in this college.
Tips for prospective students The library is open till 11:45, so you can do your homework late at night if your busy. If you learn where all the buildings are, you will never get lost on campus. and there are things to do on campus, you just have to look for them.

Categories Comments Food and Dining They have multiple places around campus to dine. As well as a central dining hall that provides nutritious meals.
Dorm Life The dorms here are nice. In Campbell Hall, at least, the dorms have two small bedrooms with a closet, bed, desk and dresser already provided. It has a small living room type area with a microwave, coffee table and couch. The rooms have their own bathroom. A shared public kitchen is available on the first floor.
Academic Rigor The courses are definitely challenging enough. The professors know what they're teaching and always keep you busy.

Food and Dining Food is pretty good. You won't die, probably.
Dorm Life Have yet to live in a dorm, but I hear they are decent.
Academic Rigor Classes range in difficulty according to the professor, but if you are a bad student in general then problems are bound to arise.
Tips for prospective students Studying is key for every class, always. Lamar is a great school, a gem in South East Texas.
In three sentences Smaller. Professors tend to care more about the students. Local.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The safety is pretty good at Lamar. Throughout the campus, there are emergency posts that can be pressed for help. Lamar has its own police department along with the city police.
Greek Life There are several fraternity's and sororities at Lamar. The most popular fraternity is the Pi Kappa Alpha's and the most popular sorority are the Zeta Tau Alphas. There are also plenty of others as well.
Clubs and Activities There are 100s of clubs at Lamar. Whether you want to join a fraternity or a sorority or just be a part of a club, there are plenty of options for you.
Great for these types of students Lamar University has one of the the top engineering programs in the state of texas along with the nursing program. The nursing facility is a million dollar facility that is built just like a hospital to get the real feeling of nursing and it contains several mechanical people that talk and interact with students.
What to do for fun Lamar has a REC with an indoor track and a rock wall along with a couple of gyms, work out machines, and a gaming room. There is also a little food kiosk that sells healthy meals and smoothies. There is also a student center where most students go to hang out in between classes.
Food and Dining There are lots of restaurants in and around Lamar. There is a section that is sort of like a food court in our student center along with another restaurant close to it in the same building. There are several fast food restaurants around campus.
Dorm Life I don't live at the dorms because i live in the next town over, but i heard that the dorms are pretty good. They have fairly new dorms also.
Academic Rigor Tests are somewhat hard, and you have to study a good bit for them. They are easy if you start studying several days in advance. So far I have done good on all of my tests because I studied a lot.
Tips for prospective students You might have to do a bit of walking from your car to class, parking is a bit crazy. Other than that, just make sure you go to class because you will surely miss out on notes.
In three sentences Lamar University is such a great college to attend. Everyone is so friendly and there is plenty to do around campus.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Like anywhere you have to be careful, here at Lamar you must show your ID to get in and if you have a visitor they must check in. I feel very safe here on campus and in my dorm. There is also a police station on campus and Emergency stations that alert the police with a push of a button if needed.
Greek Life I'm currently not a part of a sorority but I hope to join one either in the spring semester or next year.
Clubs and Activities There are so many different clubs and activities ranging from religious to just conversational clubs. With the semester just starting I have begun to join organizations and am really enjoying getting to know more people and being involved in school.
Great for these types of students Lamar University is great for any type of student. I'm a very outgoing person and have already made quite a bit of friends, some of my friends aren't as outgoing but they still feel very comfortable here on campus.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus In the middle of the campus there a state we call The Big Head because it is literally a huge state of a man's head. The Big Head is convenient for people that tend to get lost on the way to class because if you're by the Big Head that means you're close to the Setzer Center (food, bookstore, lounge)
Bang for the buck Lamar University is fairly reasonable in attendance cost, Lamar also offers their own scholarships that are easy to apply for.
What to do for fun For fun there are so many different things to do. There is a large recreational center with weights, treadmils, rock climbing, yoga, etc. There are also plenty of organizations and clubs to join that are great for hanging out and volunteering. There are sport events like football games and volleyball games that are really fun to go to.
Food and Dining Eating in the dining hall is very convenient because it is right by the dorms and they offer delicious food. Once you swipe that food card you can eat as much as you want.
Dorm Life The dorms are pretty nice, you share a living room area with your roommate but the best part of it all is that you each get your own room that has a lock to it. The privacy is great and the dorms are good when it comes to size.
Academic Rigor Lamar University is not super competitive but it's also not the type of school that is just going to let you slack off. The professors are very helpful and are willing to help you if you ask.
Tips for prospective students Don't skip classes, show up early to classes during first week to avoid being late, don't forget your ID to get back into the dorms, sit towards the front, and introduce yourself to each of your professors.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Their are emergency phones near every location. Also university police is always active.
What to do for fun You can go to the community center to swim, play tennis or basketball. Also you can go to the setzer center to play pool or table tennis.
Food and Dining The food is very good, all types of food such as Chinese, Italian and more is available.
Dorm Life Their are fully furnished dorms, all your basic needs for food depends on you.
Academic Rigor Basically your work difficulty depends on how you prepare yourself. The work amount isn't hectic.
Tips for prospective students I would advise to take advantage of the resources on campus. Also get to know your classes ahead so you can know what to aspect.
In three sentences Lamar University is a very united college. Its like a second family, you get to know people quickly. Everything is made to make you feel at ease and comfortable.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities I attended the Anime club. I wasn't expecting much, but it was actually quite fun. We went to conventions!
Food and Dining The food is a massive buffet line that changes according to the time of day and super cheap! It is wonderful for a broke college kid.
Dorm Life The dorms are pretty well taken care of. I do not live in one myself, but visit a friend who does and she has a nice little dorm. She has to share a bathroom though.
Academic Rigor The teachers really take their job seriously, but aren't too prickly and are quite friendly if you get to know them. Lamar apparently is very high on the list if you're interested in nursing or engineering.
Tips for prospective students Kampus Korner is a GREAT place for food, the people there are so nice. In fact the manager has given jobs to people who really need them before. Watch out for the squirrels, they are NOT afraid of people! The dorms are quite nice, and don't stretch too far away from the main part of campus.
In three sentences Lamar has a gorgeous central Area. Lamar's library is astounding. There are tons of cool clubs to attend at Lamar.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is practiced just the same as in a city. Lamar University has its very own emergency line to be able to assist students and faculty immediately.
What to do for fun Anyone can go party for fun, but I like to be a little more adventurous. For instance, the first weekend Lamar University will be having Zumba Fitness, which features cool and exciting ways to work out. Furthermore, it's done in the dark to get the crowd hype.
Food and Dining I've heard the dining has great, tasty food, but I won't be satisfied until I try it out for myself.
Dorm Life Lamar dorms compared to other universities are like an apartment. You and your roommate will have a separate room, but you will share living rooms and bathroom. It's pretty spacious for a dorm.
Academic Rigor I have not attended class or met my professors yet, but I have done research on them and found out I'm up for an academic challenge.
Tips for prospective students I advice all prospective students to not settle for a school based on peers and parents. Make sure you feel comfortable in its environment and you can find activities to keep you interested.
In three sentences Lamar University feels very much like home and I feel safe on the campus. I'm already looking forward to joining their greek life as I hear they have great team spirit. I rate my school an eight for school spirit and hopefully I can rate it a ten after I experience life on campus.

Categories Comments Campus Safety With new safety precautions, the campus has become somewhat more secure. We have emergency posts that have a direct line to the police department on campus. Dorm parking lots require a resident ID to access after 7:00pm.
Greek Life We have a good number of fraternities and sororities on campus. When rush time comes, Greek is pretty much all you see around campus.
Clubs and Activities There are numerous clubs covering a wide variety of interests and causes.
Great for these types of students Students interested in joining the engineering, nursing, or teaching professions should definitely apply here. Also, those looking for an ASL degree should consider coming here, as we are one of the few schools in Texas that offer a BA in that field. Be forewarned, however, that the program does have its fair share of flaws.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus If you feel stressed and need some relaxation, make your way to the pond behind the John Gray center. There you can sit and watch the water or feed the ducks and fish.
Bang for the buck Again, it depends on the degree program you choose. The tuition is fairly cheap comparatively, so overall, Lamar is a good school for its price.
What to do for fun There are many organizations, sports fields, etc. There is a modern fitness center with many options including mini golf, a track, weight machines, racquetball court, snack bar, etc. The clubs and bars are in downtown Beaumont, which is just a few minutes away from campus.
Food and Dining The food is average, with a few good choices if you go to the dining hall on the right days. The two dining options in the student center are over-priced and not of a high quality.
Dorm Life Dorms are crowded, small, dirty, and strict. Security guards are present 24/7. They take all visitor IDs and will remove guests after 1:00am.
Academic Rigor It honestly depends on the program in which you are enrolled. For example: the engineering, nursing, and teaching degrees are our top programs. They require a lot of work and studying, but they have a good name. Other programs are more lax and don't require a lot from their students.
Tips for prospective students Apply early and meet with advisers prior to being accepted. Make sure that you are comfortable with them and their advice. Also make sure that you double check all of your credits, as surprises do sometimes happen.
In three sentences Lamar has a diverse student population. It provides a variety of clubs and organizations for many interests. It has very strong academic programs.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities There are campus police and the entry of every Phase, and they are in cars circling every parking lots. If anything out of the norm were to happen, all students receive a warning text, and are updated periodically until the situation is solved.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One thing that I did find unusual I'm not sure that is even the word for it. more like interesting or fun was when the Frats would Step in the campus court yard right around the HEAD, if you go to this school you know what this is. Mind you this made it hard for me to get to my english class but I loved it!
What to do for fun Basketball games and Football games were always a fun event to partake in! The step show was fun! My first year there, there was a crawfish boil and that WAS MY FAVORITE! For those of age the clubbing district is in Downtown Beaumont, with a lively scenery! There is a festival held in Beaumont every year that as fun as all festivals are!!!
Food and Dining In terms of food, there are a few different options. Starting with the eatery closest to the main part (Setzer Center) of campus. There is a fast-food eatery, if you will, type area called Cardinal's Nest. You can get your curly fries, wings, pizza, mozzarella sticks, taco's, burritos, chips, soda, gatorade and other things of these natures. It is a quick stop between classes, unless you're getting the wings they usually make those there, and tasty; but, if you are one to eat healthy or not gain that freshman 15 people scare you with you don't want to eat here. Right down the hall from the Cardinal's Nest in the Setzer Center, is Mirabeaus!!!! definitely a campus favorite for EVERYONE especially because it is open when the dinning hall is closed!!! has sort of a café feel to it. But if you are looking for something quick, this isn't the place. As it is a favorite it is ALWAYS PACKED! You have to learn the down times. For food they offer different types of pastries, pre-made salads, and tortilla wraps (sort of like starbucks). You may also order foods such as chicken tenders, and burgers with FRIES of course. I loved Mirabeaus! The Dining Hall has a food court feel to it. Breakfast was my favorite meals they offered. they had a man that made your omelets to order right in front of you! GREAT!! The lunch and dinner selections were always different, which keeps it exciting. They have a salad bar, a deli section sort of like a subway, an Asian section, a Mexican section, and a Pizza section (always), and lastly the meal of the day section! Don't forget the ICECREAM! Close to the Business building there is a Subway. In Phase 5 there is a Papa John's, which was my undoing, inside of a convenience store! Great for when you miss dining hall hours!
Dorm Life I have stayed if phase 1 and 5. Lamar is AMAZING especially for those who like their privacy and aren't sold on the idea of sharing a room with someone. All the Phases have 2 bedrooms, a living room with a supplied refrigerator and sofas. The restroom area's sinks are seperated from the toilet and shower which, in my opinion, is great when your roommate is in the show and you need to brush your teeth.. you don't have to wait! Phase one is the oldest and every phase after that is newer than the last. I was in phase 5 and IT WAS GREAT!!! it was like a nice apartment!
Academic Rigor Academically the system is rigorous, but not to the point of exhaustion or impossible. They are very stimulating, but the teachers explain the subject/assignments to the T.
In three sentences Lamar University is a great school with small and quaint classes, that allow for a lot of one on one with your teacher. The teachers are VERY understanding, HELPFUL, and WILLING to assist you in any way. The academics are challenging and force you to think out side the box.

What to do for fun For fun I joined an organization called undefined. We host fashion shows and I'm apart of undefined dance team so I perform at the fashion shows. I am also a photographer around campus
Tips for prospective students Students must remain focus throughout the school year. There are a lot of activities going on that will distract you so make sure you are very organized and don't get too side tracked.
In three sentences Lamar university is a great school. The teachers work with you. They do there best to make sure you learn the material and pass the class.

Academic Rigor Math and science honors classes are challenging but there is tutoring assistance available.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Cops and security everywhere 24 hours, but you know things still happen, so it's up to you to be careful
Greek Life Not that sure, but they are all very nice and you can go to interest meeting to find out.
Clubs and Activities Necessary because the campus can get very boring people are important from preventing that.
Great for these types of students Students that enjoy diversity and open to learning new things
What to do for fun I love to dance, so that's what I usually do whether in a studio or at a club or party. Most students party and club for fun and most of the times its free or cheap. I also like to go to activities on campus such as game and movie nights, concerts, and other events held by the greeks on campus. Also can do things with your friends that you enjoy like I have a lot of music and theatre friends so we do karaoke a lot.
Food and Dining If you are a person that embrace living a healthy lifestyle, it's quite difficult to do so here. The dinning hall does give a lot of choices and are becoming healthier and healthier by the semester, but the other dining places lack healthy food only choice is fruits and salad that has meat in it.
Dorm Life The dorms are pretty nice you get your own room and share a bathroom with one other person. Just like most colleges problems can occur with loud neighbors, stomping, etc.
Academic Rigor School is not that hard in my honest opinion, most of the professors are laid back, so they don't try hard to make your life miserable, but you still must work hard, I mean it's college no ones babysitting you.
Tips for prospective students Be early when registering for classes and completing any type of financial aid work. Get involved there's not much to do here, so the more you get involved the better your life will be.
In three sentences Lamar is definitely a school you have to make fun. If you're not creative and find your self weak to the temptation of fitting in, I don't think you will survive long here.

Great for these types of students Students who can listen relatively good to well and with a willingness to learn. Students who have some common sense.
Food and Dining Lamar University has a diverse selection of food served daily. Whatever you are in the mood for, they have it.
Dorm Life The dorm management definitely takes the health and well-being of students into consideration. They frequently make efforts to ensure that students are safe while living in the dorms.
Academic Rigor The teachers and staff at Lamar University put forth a real, genuine effort to ensure that we the students get the most out of our education. They are willing to work with students with their individual problems and concerns. They challenge us to make decisions that will benefit students academically and personally.
Tips for prospective students Ask teachers questions if you do not understand something; e-mail them if able. Study efficiently; go over materials for at least 45 minutes to an hour a day. DO THE HOMEWORK! Turn in all assignments no matter what!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Here at Lamar we have 24 hour security which has made our campus a lot safer and has brought down incident reports by a large amount. This is a safe campus.
Greek Life Here at Lamar there is an active Greek life. We have both NPHC and CPC organizations we also have many different Greek honors organizations.
Clubs and Activities There are over 200 organizations at Lamar and if there is something that you would want to start that is not already here the campus encourages new organizations.
Great for these types of students This school is great for any kind of student. Lamar is open and welcome to all.
Bang for the buck When getting text books explore all options before purchasing from the book store unless it is a special requirement that only our bookstore offers. Check Chegg.com and Kampus Korner which is a used book store located around the corner from the school.
What to do for fun For fun there are many on campus organizations, we have a brand new rec with many different activities and exercise classes, also the Beaumont nightlife on Thursdays can be pretty good.
Food and Dining The d-hall is okay but you will eventually get tired of their food. It is a buffet style cafeteria with select choices however both the nest and marribeus are very good and they have different items that you can't at the d-hall. We also have a Papa Johns on campus/c-store so when picking your meal plan I suggest the $500 with 75 swipes.
Dorm Life Here at Lamar you only have one roommate per dorm room however you don't have a kitchen in your room which I find to be difficult. I miss home cooked meals but they do have community kitchens where you have to supply all of your own materials to cook. Besides that you have your own bedroom with a closet a full tub/shower and two sinks with a huge vanity mirror in the bathroom.
Academic Rigor Yes they are easy classes but there are also very hard classes at Lamar. This is an institution where you are continually learning and it is worth every cent spent.
Tips for prospective students I would recommend living on campus for at least one year to get the full college experience and dorm life. Also I say come with an open mind and join an organization that you feel best fits you.
In three sentences Lamar University is an amazing college with open ended experiences from scholastic achievement to extracurricular programs. Diversity is what Lamar University focuses on and since being enrolled I have met people and made friend I never would have imagined. What to do for fun There is few things happening on campus during the year, movie nights, bible study, meeting of different organization etc. The fun out of campus Crockett St where students can dance: pop or country depends on their performance. Parks, movies and mall would be the other option but for that you need transportation.
Food and Dining In the present moment there is dining hall which food is alright most of the time in which students use their swipes from meal plan. 2 other locations: Nest and Marrible that sell better food and you can also use your meal plan money. Then last one would be C store that is located in one of the phases, that sells food and other needed things.
Dorm Life Dorm life is very strict. There is 24hrs security watch of who enters the dorms and who leaves them. This makes it saver but to some people it may be irritating.
Academic Rigor Incoming high school students with high GPA and good SAT or ACT scores can get scholarships. To keep the scholarship students should keep GPA 3.6. Also many departments are seeking tutors therefore there is a lot of opportunities for on campus jobs.
Tips for prospective students If you like small classes then you should think about attending Lamar. Small campus gives an easy access to all the classes on foot or bike. Small classes gives also students better interaction with teachers therefore they can help students with any questions that they have.
In three sentences Lamar University's location is not too appearing but if you look around you might find interesting things to do (parks, canoeing, etc). The campus is improving and should have nice eating places on campus in few years. Most of the classes are small therefore students can have better interaction with teachers.

Food and Dining The food options available at Lamar are diverse and generally good tasting.
Dorm Life I have not lived in the dorms.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You won't have to worry about anything. People here aren't harmful.
Greek Life Greek life is confidential unless you get involved with them.
Clubs and Activities I'm not involved in any activities, I have no idea.
Great for these types of students The 5th floor is a great place for quiet students to study. The Setzer Center is a great place for social students to meet new people.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There aren't any.
Bang for the buck In college you must be responsible and do what you came here to do which is graduate hopefully. There won't be any parents around to rule you so it's important to not get carried away because of that.
What to do for fun I study and work for fun.
Food and Dining The dining hall has it days when the food is simply delicious. Eating in the dining hall however gets old very quickly.
Dorm Life Dorm life is really cool. It's like having your own apartment except you have to share a bathroom.
Academic Rigor Sometimes we'll receive a huge amount of information we're required to remember for a test.
Tips for prospective students Go to class everyday and study!
In three sentences Lamar University isn't too big or small, it is just the perfect size. It's very calm and classroom sizes are small. The professors are extremely awesome.

Categories Comments Academic Rigor The difficulty of the classes vary depending on the professor and the course. From my personal experience, the professors find a good balance. The aren't impossible to pass but not a walk in the park either.
Tips for prospective students If you plan on attending with friends, you will probably want to room in the same building. There is a set time in which all outside guest and students who stay in other builds must leave. This makes studying, doing projects, or just plain hanging out difficult.
In three sentences Lamar University is a great college with a nice campus and top notch dorms. The only down side is the open campus and security checks. Other than that, Lamar is a grade A school.

Categories Comments Campus Safety They have roughly ten police cars and a security guard in every building at all times.
Clubs and Activities The school has tons of organizations to fit any types of students!
Bang for the buck All in all its a nice college especially for the price of the college.
What to do for fun Theres not a whole lot to do for fun on campus itself. Beaumont has a lot to offer. Really the only thing on campus would be the recreation center where they have a huge gym, pool, track and a bunch of games. Im more of an outdoor guy so i generally go fishing in a reservoir about 3 miles from the campus.
Food and Dining They have a full buffet that is included in the dorm cost or you can eat at papa johns or any of the other places they have to offer.
Dorm Life The dorms here are marvelous! You have two separate rooms that lock and a nice dual sink and bathroom. Internet an cable hookups and the while deal. The only disadvantage to the dorm that I see is in order to get to your room you have to go through security and you have to have a badge. Some people may see this as a good thing but it can get aggravating.
Academic Rigor The academic part of the school truly based on the teachers you choose. I was fortunate enough to have friends who knew who the right teachers were. Just research possible professors and choose the best one.
Tips for prospective students One tip I would give to any students planning to attend this college or any college at all would be to cover your basics like english and historys in high school so your already ahead of the game.
In three sentences Lamar University is home to roughly 15,000 students. Its a very nice school with plenty of majors to choose from. Its low cost and great teaching makes it an ideal school to attend.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is an on campus police department. There are call posts around campus where if you feel like you are in trouble you go to the nearest one and press the button and a cop should show up in a couple minutes. Security is at every entrance to every dorm. You need a dorm card or an ID to get into the dorms or into the dorm parking lots
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs and activities. Many club sports to join, some on campus church groups to join etc. I am apart of FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) and it is a great way to get to know other people and get involved not only on campus but around the area as well.
What to do for fun There is not much to do for fun. There are athletic games; football, soccer, baseball, softball, and volleyball. Those are always fun to attend. The school often hosts some other things. One time there was a movie night on the football field. They played the movie on the big screen. Off campus, there is Dowlen Rd that has the mall and other stores to shop at. It's about 15-20 minutes away.
Food and Dining The food in the Dining Hall is great. There is international food; Chinese and Mexican. There is a grill with burgers and hotdogs and chicken tenders. There is a sandwich station, some soups and pastas, and there is a harvest section with good home-cooked style meals. There are also some places in the student center with many food choices as well.
Dorm Life The dorms are kept pretty clean. There are different phases, some are older and more worn-in, and some are only a couple years old. You get separate rooms and sink, you have a nice living area with a fridge and microwave, and a nice size bathroom. The down side is that nothing that heats up (like a coffee pot) is allowed in the dorms.
Academic Rigor Once you get into classes for your major, it is very tough, but with the professors on campus, it is easy to ask for help. The majority of the professors test what they teach; the tests resemble work done in class so that nothing new shows up on tests. This does not mean that it is easy. You still have to put in time and effort to get the better grades. pre requisite classes can be fun and easy if you make the most out of them.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you have in mind an idea of what you want to study so that you do not waste time taking classes for a major if you are going to change fields completely. Also, come to the school with an open mind. I am an out of state student from Florida. Most people ask why the heck would you leave Florida for Beaumont? My answer, it is a Division 1 athletic school with a great engineering program that puts students into Co-ops and internships.
In three sentences Lamar University has small class sizes which is great for one-on-one teacher-student interaction. The professors are actual teachers on campus instead of teaching/research assistants. The advisors are know you by name and are very helpful with putting together a good schedule for their students.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Cops are always patrolling and there are usually 1-2 cops at every dorm entrance and exit.
Clubs and Activities Club sports, Christian organizations, hobbiy clubs and more!
Great for these types of students Those who are somewhat introverted as many people at Lamar are extroverts but not in an in your face style. Everyone at Lamar tends to be friendly and befriend others.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Setzer Center is always an entertaining place at lunch time.
What to do for fun Go to the sporting events, climb the rock wall at the rec center, go downtown for a night out, see a movie on the football stadium jumbotron!
Food and Dining The dining hall has really improved since my first year on campus and is a pleasure to have every once in a while.
Dorm Life Although I did not live in the dorms I had several friends in them. They are very unique in the fact that they are apartment style. Each person has their own room and a shared living room, unlike some dorms that are two beds just thrown into a 10 by 10 room.
Academic Rigor Classes are tough. Most college classes are tough. Therefore, what you put in to the class is what you will get out.
Tips for prospective students Don't give up on Lamar after your first year. Although it is mainly a commuter school and most kids get sick of going to college in their own backyard, like me. I stuck it out and I definitely will enjoy receiving my Lamar undergraduate degree.
In three sentences Lamar is a diamond in the rough type of school! Business school is very unique with opportunities and internships. Some of the my professors have now become my friends because of the small student-teacher ratio.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Although it may be located in a sketchy area, the LUPD have stepped up their security measures a lot to make students safe.
Greek Life I am not involved in Greek Life, but I have friends who are, and they absolutely love it.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs and activities to join. I am very actively involved in Release, a group that has a nondenominational Christian service on campus every Thursday night, has small groups, leadership courses, service opportunities, prayer services, and many other fun activities to join in on.
Great for these types of students Laid-back, friendly, involved.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus In the center of campus, there is a huge, rather creepy, statue of Mirabeau B. Lamar's head. Students refer to this as The Head, and this is somewhere you should go if lost, and it is also often a meeting place for different clubs or even activists shouting things into the air.
Bang for the buck I'd say it is average cost.
What to do for fun There are many parties, campus activities, and clubs to get involved in.
Food and Dining There are 5 places you can get food- 1) primarily the Dining Hall, which is a buffet with many options, and open for three different meal times (breakfast, lunch, dinner); 2) Mirabeau's, where you walk up and order food off a menu, and it's open from 7am-7pm; 3) The Nest, only open for lunch, has a few stations with a few different options; 4) The Rec has smoothies and small snacks offered during midday hours; 5) The C-Store, located in one of the dorms, is only open late at night, but is like a small convenient store. Those are the food options which are great- however, if you are a vegetarian, like myself, or wish to eat healthy, it is very challenging to do here.
Dorm Life The dorms are awesome! There is security (which can be a pain at times), but overall the dorms are much better than the average college dorm.
Academic Rigor Lamar has some great professors and some not-so-great. I am in the Honors program, and the Honors courses are where you find the most students who care. Many other students are not primarily focused on school.
Tips for prospective students Live in the dorms! They are much better than the average college dorm, keep you in the center of campus, and help you stay and get involved in activities.
In three sentences Lamar is great for those who would like a small college community. My favorite part of Lamar is a nondenominational Christian service held on campus every Thursday at 7pm called Release- there are a lot of groups to get involved in and friends you can make from this. Lamar has an awesome language department for Spanish.

Dorm Life Good dorm life, many things to do around campus.
Academic Rigor Classes are challenging but rewarding.

Food and Dining Meal hall isn't too bad, but could be a little tastier. The other food offered on campus, however, is pretty good.
Dorm Life Dorms are pretty nice and clean. Also, they are very safe. My only complaint is the stricktness of vistors. All visting must be done between the hours of 8am and 2am. So no over night guests.
Academic Rigor As far as I can tell, education for undergradute programs are top of the line at Lamar University.
Tips for prospective students Go to class, and take advantage of all the sports tickets and activities offered at Lamar. Join a soroity or fraternity in order to get the most out of the college experience.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is a very high safety urgency on the campus. The Lamar University Police and the Beaumont Police Department take their jobs very seriously for the safety of the students because of the surrounding area.
Greek Life The Greek Life on campus is very broad. There is a fraternity, sorority and/or organization for everyone on campus. You just have to find the right one for you.
Clubs and Activities The clubs and activities on campus are very fun to go to. They campus does free school-wide activities at the beginning of the year so that the students have the opportunity to meet one another. There are also clubs like the Intramural Sports Club where the students get to compete against each other in sports like football, dodge-ball and volleyball.
Great for these types of students The school itself is great for everyone of every culture, ethnicity and religion to enjoy.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One of the biggest traditions at the school is at the football and basketball games. Before the ball is kicked off, everyone in the stands holds up a L with their right hand and yells L. Once the ball is kicked, the crowd yells U and drops their hand. When Lamar is having a free throw attempt, the crowd holds up a L with their right hand.
Bang for the buck The bang for the buck at Lamar is that this is a may school, but you get the same or maybe even better education as you would at University of Texas or Louisiana State University.
What to do for fun There are always activities going on on campus that are suitable for everyone. The Setzer Center, known as The Set, has a lounging area upstairs with pool tables for students to commute in. The Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center, known as the The Rec, has an array of activities to get into from air hockey to indoor rock climbing.
Food and Dining It does get hard getting used to not eating a home cooked meal everyday, but the dining hall, The Nest and Maribeau's makes food that will make you feel like you are right back at home.
Dorm Life The dorm life is what you make it. The dorms are fit for everybody. In some of the dorm halls, there are lounging areas, pool tables, Foosball tables and kitchens to cook in. Some of the dorms even have media rooms that can show movies or just regular television. There are laundry rooms in all of the dorms also.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor is very important to Lamar University because we want to uphold a very high standard of education.
Tips for prospective students Do not get me wrong, the first semester is always the hardest because there is so much to do on campus and so many people to meet. The thing you have to remember is to go to class, do the work and pass the tests. After all of that is done then you can have some leisure time for yourself.
In three sentences Lamar University is a great school to attend. The student life on campus is open to everyone and has something for every one to enjoy and be part of. The school may be small, but you will get a good education here.

Bang for the buck So much cheaper than many other online programs.
Food and Dining Don't live there - online
Academic Rigor I feel that it is rigorous, but you also get out of it what you put into it. I think that in some courses you could get through doing the minimum but to me that is a waste. I am doing this to learn so I do all I can plus some.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you stay in contact with your academic advisor and they will help you through the whole process. They are wonderful.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There's not much to do near the university. I enjoy the movies, bowling, putt-putt, and the mall.
Food and Dining There's many places to eat around the campus, but the food is kind of pricey. Also, they don't offer free water.
Dorm Life Each dorm is two bedrooms, and bathroom, and a living room. So there's privacy. Each get their own bedroom and share the rest.
Academic Rigor You'll learn much if you put time into it. The teachers I've had weren't the easiest to approach, and they haven't really explained anything well, especially in Calculus.
Tips for prospective students I would suggest prospective students to be advised quickly or as soon as possible. Secondly, there's many societies to join and plenty of people to meet. Also, the classes are fairly small.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Safety has been taken up a notch this year.
Bang for the buck Although more expensive than your regular community college, Lamar is worth every penny.
What to do for fun There is always a party to go to. There are also local bars and clubs to enjoy and Lamar will have big things going on outside.
Food and Dining The food is the best thing. The dining hall serves a lot of food during times of the day and there is a pizza store open all day on campus.
Dorm Life Life in the dorms is fantastic. Free internet and always hanging out with friends is a lot of fun. You just have to remember that there are times to study.
Academic Rigor The teachers are varied from one to the next. Some are older and strict with rules and regulations while the younger teachers seem to be more lenient. Homework isn't brutal but it does count.
Tips for prospective students Don't let time fly past you because that's whenever you will panic. Try to calmly do all work asap and don't forget to register for every semester whenever it opens up.

Also, all through the campus are emergency polls. These are set up and you can page a police officer to your location and a dispatch will also come on and ask what your situation is.
Greek Life I can't provide any information in this area. I am not part of any of it.
Clubs and Activities There are many different clubs for different majors. Your academic advisor will be able to provide you with more information on this.
Great for these types of students If you are considering majoring in nursing, education, or engineering, Lamar is a very good school to consider. These are the top three programs that Lamar is recognized in.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus To my knowledge, there are not any unusual traditions on campus.
Bang for the buck Any college you attend is going to drain your bank account. However, Lamar University does there absolute best at providing you with the best education possible.
What to do for fun As far as fun goes, many people have different versions of fun. On campus at Lamar, I don't find very much to be fun except our recreation center. This is a gym but also has many other activities you can participate in such as rock climbing, tennis, basketball.
Food and Dining There are many options on campus for students to choose from in the food and dining category. We have a dining hall and a couple of snack bars. Also there is a subway and another small restaurant on campus.
Dorm Life I can't personally rate the dorm life here at Lamar University because I live off campus. From what I have been told by other students, they aren't too bad.
Academic Rigor The academics here at Lamar are very well taught by most professors. I find it beneficial to check with other students before making a schedule to get the best professor for the classes I need. You can also view ratemyprofessor.com and this will help guide you to find the most suitable professor for you.
Tips for prospective students If you are considering to attend Lamar, I think it would be beneficial to you if you could find a current LU student to help you with certain things. LU has help lines and you can call for questions, however, I personally have found that the help they provide you is not always correct or they don't understand what your asking.
In three sentences Lamar has a wide variety of opportunities for students including the majors they wish to succeed in, the activities for students, and resources to help students accomplish these goals that have set for themselves. Lamar is a smaller school than some other universities but I believe that this benefits the students. The student has a larger opportunity to seek help in subjects with fellow peers than being overwhelmed with such large classes.

Food and Dining I AM UNABLE TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION DUE TO OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING AND DINING.
Dorm Life I AM UNABLE TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION DUE TO OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING.
Academic Rigor THE ACADEMIC RIGOR IS STELLAR, WITH WORLD RENOWNED PROFESSORS.
Tips for prospective students PLEASE VISIT THE WEBSITE FOR A PROGRAM THAT FITS YOU. THERE ARE COUNSELORS THERE TO HELP WITH ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL PLANNING.
In three sentences THE PRINCIPALSHIP PROGRAM AT LAMAR UNIVERSITY HAS PRESENTED ME WITH AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY TO COMPLETE COURSES ON-LINE AND MAINTAIN A QUALITY EDUCATION. THE COST OF THE PROGRAM IS ALSO VERY REASONABLE.

Categories Comments Food and Dining The cafeteria has a very large selection of great food! There are also restaurants scattered all over campus.
Academic Rigor So far, the professors I have had have all been very informative and helpful. The classes aren't too hard, so long as you pay attention, take good notes, and study.
Tips for prospective students Get a map! It's hard to find your way around on the first day. You should check the map, figure out where your classes are, and maybe even tour the campus before you have to be up there the first day. You should also figure out the closest parking lots.
In three sentences Lamar is big enough to feel collegiate, but small enough that it's hard to get lost. The classes work well with my schedule. There is a decent selection of majors.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The on campus police are so nice an helpful! I forgot to turn my lights off in the morning and when I had finished school for the day my battery was dead and no one I knew could give me a jump. In a frenzied panic I tried the police station and they jumped my VW beetle for me. I was so glad for their patience and assistance. They are awesome!
Greek Life I have not as of yet been greekified.
Clubs and Activities The clubs I joined have been a very positive and enriching experience on my life. Not only have the clubs been a boon to my resume, but they been an integral part of my social life. What I'm trying to say is that without these clubs or activities I would have no friends or social life.
Great for these types of students If you enjoy any sort of physical activity Lamar will have it in the rec center. They have indoor pools, racquetball courts, foosball, rock climbing and more. They even have a desk where you can rent outdoor equipment ranging from tents to canoes!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One of the coolest building is the Hayes Biology building that has a massive collection of animal trophies everywhere! You get a greater grasp of the sizes of all kinds of different animals. FYI beware of moose; they're ginormous!
Bang for the buck Going back to the dining hall all day buffet, it is only $6 dollars for all you can eat which for an impoverished college student with a voracious appetite and hollow legs to boot is a life saver!
What to do for fun They have a seemingly endless amount of activities to do and club/ organizations to join that anyone could find several to participate in. I myself and into rock climbing, the geology club, and a officer of the Japanese Entertainment Culture Club.
Food and Dining They have several restaurants that are nice to have a quick bite to eat. There is also a dining hall that has an all day buffet which I often frequent. I would compare it to a higher end Golden Corral. It has a little of everything.
Dorm Life I live off campus, however the few times I have visited friends who dwell in the dorms they seemed pretty clean and surprisingly spacious.
Academic Rigor Although attendance is key and some of the courses are challenging there are an abundant amount of resources at your disposal that you can access ranging from: tutoring, math and writing labs, STARS programs, the library, etc. In all fairness, I would rather be challenged than the courses be too easy because the more you strive for something the more you take out of it and have a sense of achievement.
Tips for prospective students As an incoming freshman I was a bit nervous of all the upperclassmen but, they were very hospitable and by the first week I felt right at home. If you are lost or unsure ask anyone and they will gladly point you in the right direction.
In three sentences I am very happy with Lamar University; with it's small manageable classes it is far easier to participate in discussions and enjoy a more personable relationship with the professors. Everyone here is warm and welcoming and since the school is smaller the campus is easy to navigate. I am honored to be going to college here and would highly recommend Lamar University.

Categories Comments Campus Safety A police station is located on campus, and security guards monitor each dorm. Emergency stations are located throughout campus where the push of a button will alert the police of a situation. The campus is well lit at night, and a shuttle service is offered to take students around campus for evening classes if they are uncomfortable walking alone in the dark. Also, the health center on campus offers care for illness and injury.
Greek Life The Greek groups are increasingly active on campus, and have begun hosting more public events in the last two years.
Clubs and Activities A wide variety of organizations exist from music groups to marital arts clubs.
Great for these types of students Students looking for a laid back atmosphere that still offers a challenge and knowledge will enjoy lamar. Also students who are wary of giant classes and large populations will feel more comfortable here.
Bang for the buck Lamar is very highly rated and reasonably priced. The class sizes are small enough so that each student can get personal attention if need be.
What to do for fun As the student count has grown, Lamar has started hosting more internal events for students. The football team has also returned to campus, and every home game comes with lots of festivities. Lamar is close to downtown Beaumont, where there is a decent amount of night life.
Food and Dining Lamar has several different dining areas, and it is very close to other areas of town with good food. The dining hall is very popular with students as well as with local workers. The Nest and Mirabeau's are also on campus, and Kampus Korner is a delicious greek restaurant.
Dorm Life The Cardinal Village dormitories are all less than fifteen years old, and they are kept up very well. There are two individual bedrooms inside each dorm, along with a common area, fridge, microwave and a bathroom. Furniture, cable, phone and internet are all included with the room. The dorms have very good security, common areas and a small convenience store, and all repairs and issues are addressed promptly.
Academic Rigor As a member of the honors program, I have had many demanding classes throughout my college career. All of my professors have held the students to a high standard, and I feel like I come away from each semester with newfound knowledge.
Tips for prospective students New students should register early and be willing to get involved on campus. There are many great opportunities if you look for them. Also, students should take advantage of Lamar's free tutoring and writing programs if they feel overwhelmed with school.
In three sentences LU boasts a rapidly growing student base, and the university does a great job of accommodating its growing population. The staff is generally very helpful and willing to work with students on a personal level. The cost of tuition is very reasonable, and the class sizes are small enough for personal attention, so the university is well worth the price.

Dorm Life I am an online student so this is no applicable to me.
Academic Rigor Just because Lamar is a small school, do not be fooled. Their academics are top notch. I am continuously challenged to learn.
Tips for prospective students Lamar is an outstanding university, not too large and a well kept secret in SE Texas. Their academics are top notch and if you are are looking at math and engineering, I would highly recommend this school.
In three sentences I am in the LUBAAS program, a consortium between Lamar and Academic Partnerships. It is an excellent program for adult students who work full time and are returning to college. It is an on-line program that allows me to work around my work schedule.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Sometimes the safety feels a bit excessive but as long as you have nothing to hide, just move on with your own business. Some students do mess it up for others, but that happens anywhere you go.
Greek Life Well rounded groups are on campus and will fit any niche. The activities are planned ahead of time and community service is something offered and what greeks should be known for.
Clubs and Activities Activities are on time and are a great way to meet new people that you'll most likely have classes with. Make friends, just in case you get sick and need notes later!
Great for these types of students Social types of students will get along with anyone. No type of prejudice around campus. Also, looks aren't everything at all, just walk up to anyone for help or small talk.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Stand the whole game! Be loud! You'll learn the chants, just show up.
Bang for the buck Classes are not expensive at all compared to other 4 year schools. The professor will help you excel because they aren't doing research the school assigns them or anything that would distance themselves from the students.
What to do for fun College night off campus downtown Beaumont! Any of the clubs there aren't bad at all. Cheap drinks with a fairly crowded place. Good music. Don't get carried away, police DO show up around the parking lots.
Food and Dining Lets be honest, nothing beats mom's cooking! Especially southern mommas! The Lamar dining hall is catered by Chartwells and is decent. I do love the buffet style dining hall and the building is very nice. There are only 3 places to eat on campus and 5 if you consider subway and kampus korner, which are in walking distance. Other places are a 5 minute car ride, so not too bad.
Dorm Life At Lamar the dorms are perfect for me. I love the apartment style. Much better than the dorms at Texas State, which are just one room with 2 bunk beds. Lamar is currently expanding and gaining revenue to make changes to live up to standards one wouldn't expect the school to have.
Academic Rigor I would not say that classes are very difficult for ANY college. It all depends on the students drive. One will excel at any level of education with the right attitude. At Lamar the atmosphere allows for such a drive to influence students to pursue more than they believe they are capable of. The area of the college has nothing to do with ones internal drive for a better future.
Tips for prospective students Consider Lamar as the place to attend if you desire to focus on your studies. I'm currently attending for Engineering and there are actually people in the department looking for jobs FOR YOU! Yes, there are people actually looking to get you into an internship QUICK! Lots of engineering options here, ideal for a economic hardship in this day and age.
In three sentences Lamar University is the very definition of Southern hospitality. The professors are flexible and enjoy working with students who have the drive for education. The campus is not too large or too small and is perfect for and uncrowded learning experience ideal for open minded students.

What to do for fun There is always something to do in Lamar University for fun. Students join sports clubs and the Greek life is always interesting.
Food and Dining The food are really good. The dinning hall is always clean.
Dorm Life The dorm life is very safe because there are police officers in every corner of the dorms. The students that live in the dorms are very nice and they are not loud.
Academic Rigor Lamar University is a strict school because ones you fall below the GPA of 2.0, the student will be suspended.
Tips for prospective students The tips i have for prospective students are study ahead of time and do your homework on time also.
In three sentences Lamar University is a wonderful school is go to. The teachers are very understanding their students and I will give it 10

Categories Comments Campus Safety Like anywhere you should still be aware of your surroundings; anything can happen anywhere anytime.
Greek Life Very enthusiastic and involved. Be about something.
Clubs and Activities Many different activities. If they don't have it be sure that if you want you could make it happen.
Great for these types of students Many different walks of life are here so it's easy to learn about different cultures and things going on in the world.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Come to find out. ;)
Bang for the buck For the money, Lamar is a good place to get an education and still be able to save money for life after school.
What to do for fun You may get lucky and find friends in the dorms or possibly in your classes are main department and hanging out can always be fun. There are also many restaurants and places to go out. Parkdale Mall has many different stores (and job opportunities).
Food and Dining The food is healthy in MODERATION. There are many fried foods and not many choices. Very repetitive. you will see the same meals every day or week.
Dorm Life The dorms are pretty good for apartment style living. Unfortunately they don't have kitchens or mini-kitchens in the dorm rooms, but they do have two single-person rooms with a shared living room and bathroom. There is a REQUIRED meal plan for individuals with less than 90 credits. Careful who you choose to be your roommate.
Academic Rigor The better you study the better you do. Stay focused and ask for help when you need it. Some classes are clearly harder than others. The math, science, English, and history departments seem more strict than that of other departments. The nursing and Engineering departments are top notch. Many options and departments available.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you prepare very well before coming to Lamar especially if you're not from Beaumont; being in a new place can mess with how well you do in your classes especially if you get homesick easily.
In three sentences Smaller classes. Mostly helpful professors. Close to home.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck You will get what you pay for, and sometimes less than what you pay for.
What to do for fun There's not much to do for fun, unless you get active in the student centers.
Food and Dining Campus food is campus food. There is plenty of variety, but its not always the healthiest, nor the cheapest.
Dorm Life Dorms are clean, but often times rowdy and difficult to study in or even sleep.
Academic Rigor The ability to communicate the point to students is incredible.
Tips for prospective students I would encourage incoming students to invest in adequate rain attire. I would suggest taking early morning classes, because the night-time class dynamic might not suit their generation.
In three sentences I find Lamar University to be an incredibly diverse campus. It is an excellent school for Business, Nursing, and Engineers. Lamar offers up close and personal teaching, which is vital to students everywhere.

Food and Dining The food here always amazing. You have many places and variety to choose from.
Dorm Life I don't live in the dorms, but i know people who do. They say its kind of expensive so if you could live in an apartment the better.
Academic Rigor If you think you can get by without studying, you are wrong. Every class requires a substantial amount of commitment.
Tips for prospective students If you will be coming to Lamar i recommend an umbrella if not you will suffer. Take advantage of the STARS tutoring service. Always talk to your professors if you have a problem they will listen.

Food and Dining The food on campus it ok. The food gets nasty after a while from eating it everyday.
Dorm Life Dorm life is was easy for me to adjust to. it wasn't bad at all, for the most part you had your own privacy and the campus is clean.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor wasn't so bad. You made it out of what every you made it out of. If you make it hard on yourself then it will but if not it'll be a piece of cake.
Tips for prospective students Make sure your handling your business and stay responsible. Don't procrastinate and get things done early so you don't have to stress over them later.
In three sentences I rate Lamar University at a seven out of ten. Student involvement could be better. Also school could be cheaper.

Greek Life There are a variety of greek societies that are available from major specific to academic related (like Phi Kappa Phi).
Clubs and Activities There are lots of clubs and organizations available that vary from major related to volunteer oriented. There are even some programs that pay students - like STAIRSTEP and McNair
Great for these types of students Pre-professional students. The reason is that there are a better chance to get to know your professors - great for letters of recommendations!
Bang for the buck I'm so glad I get to spend a relatively small amount of money for great education offered.
What to do for fun Join the clubs offered at Lamar!
Food and Dining Food is good.
Dorm Life Each person gets their own room where they sleep... some privacy is always a plus.
Academic Rigor Some classes are very tough-like organic chemistry. However, these are the classes that push the students to think differently and be studious. Of course, classes like art appreciation, are not very difficult.
Tips for prospective students The professors are so welcoming, don't be shy to ask any questions.
In three sentences Lamar University is a great university if you like easy access to professors, many research opportunities, and a good education at a low cost. Since being at Lamar I've been able to conduct research in psychology, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. Categories Comments Campus Safety I give the lowest rating because it is in the scary part of town. It is so unsafe, going out past dusk is highly frowned upon!
Greek Life The Greek life is always doing something around campus.
Clubs and Activities There are plenty of clubs, mainly a few members.
Great for these types of students Lower class or natives to Southeast Texas
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a big celebration for Black history month, where the food is similar to soul food and most of the students relate (and enjoy).
Bang for the buck Very inexpensive tuition, but that is about the only positive thing. The quality of being on campus is poor.
Food and Dining There is one major dining hall, which is buffet style. One or two cafes are located in the center, but they do not have a big variety.
Dorm Life From the talk around campus, the dorm rooms are pretty nice, but the Lamar is still a commuter-campus. The area around which Lamar is located is not very safe, so going out at night is not preferred.
Academic Rigor There is a laziness about the campus, and students complain about the work. The teachers do not push the students, so students expect a breezy semester (which is not what college is about).
Tips for prospective students If you are wanting to save money, then Lamar is the right place for you. If anything, you can get the basics out of the way and transfer to another school that emphasizes your major.
In three sentences There is a small community feel to Lamar, but if you did not attend the nearby high schools it may be harder to find a place in it. Also, there is not a need for maturity, as in acting like a complete grown up, because a majority of students are still in the high school phase. I would not suggest relying on Lamar to help you excel in major fields, such as law.

Categories Comments Campus Safety the campus is generally a pretty safe feeling place. the security guards aren't the nicest people, but they do their jobs.
Greek Life i don't have any clue about the greek life.
Clubs and Activities there aren't many clubs and activities to choose from but if you do find a club to join, it can be quite beneficial to you.
Great for these types of students it's great for students interested in an engineering degree or a nursing degree.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there aren't any unusual traditions or any special places.
Bang for the buck it is hard to tell whether you are getting the most for your money because the level of education you recieve depends on the professors you get.
What to do for fun the only things i can say to do for fun are to join any athletic team or clubs around campus. beaumont isn't exactly a thriving metropolis.
Dorm Life i don't live in the dorms so i am not at liberty to say how they rate.
Tips for prospective students schedule your classes as early as possible. be sure you are certain about the career path you choose or else changing majors could be difficult. invest in a bicycle.
In three sentences lamar university is a small campus, so there are many opportunities for individual attention. the programs at lamar are some of the best i've seen. i would rate lamar at a 6 on a scale from 1 to 10.

Dorm Life its okay all dorms are quite alike there is no high class or low class dorm. each student gets his or her own room with a mirror closet, study, and drawers. there is a nice little living room with a sofa and love seat, a center table, and a fridge. bathroom included with his and her sinks.
Academic Rigor be prepared to learn its not overloading but it is concise

Tips for prospective students If you are a prospective student interested in Lamar University, wonder no more! Just do it & become a part of something great at Lamr University! As a current student at Lamar, I would just like to remind you to STAY FOCUSED during your time at Lamar but remember to have fun!
Bang for the buck First off, no amount of money can compare to your overall college experience! Besides, Lamar University is way too affordable for that!
Am enjoying being here I enjoy being at Lamar University for a number of reasons! There are soooo many things to do! You have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and experience college life. There are ALWAYS weekly activities happening at Lamar Univ. but just make sure you don't get behind in your priorities! I am a part of bible studies at Lamar Univ. as well as Lamar's Baptist Student Ministry.
Am learning a lot At Lamar University, learning is the students' number one priority. The teachers provide great lectures that all students can understand. Studying is required for all these courses of course! As long as you put in the effort to help yourself, your teachers will help you likewise!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Lamar is great for students going into the medical field. In fact resources claim that it is the best school for the medical field, but its great for any type of student.
Tips for prospective students Some students start their first semester off and get blindsided by the fun that they start to fail. I would prefer you balance out extracurricular activities and your work. If you were to flunk there's programs such as STARZ to help you get back on track!
Bang for the buck Financial aid of course pays for education. Some may need loans and that's great. In the end when you have to pay it all back they give you information on how you should go about it.
Am enjoying being here I don't live on campus but when I am there I have fun. Organizations have something going on almost everyday. They have fundraisers offering delicious food to raise money for their organizations and have good personalities.
Am learning a lot Lamar has great teachers who's willing to help you if you want the help. Some teachers put you in groups every class so you can interact with all the students in your class. The methods they use will have you feeling you can achieve and pass anything that comes your way. Of course you have to put your best effort into it.

Tips for prospective students As you should with all colleges, a scheduled visit is a must. In addition, you might want to attend a sporting event. Sporting events help portray what the student life is like, while campus visits often do not.
Bang for the buck Compared to other universities in Texas, Lamar University is definitely one of the cheaper ones. With that being said, this is a great school to take advantage of. The education received is priceless.
Am enjoying being here There is not much diversity at Lamar. For the most part, everyone has the same background. Most current students are, in fact, local.
Am learning a lot As many college students do, I've changed my major more than once. Have being involved in three different areas, I can assure you that each department is high class and the students’ education is a top priority.

Categories Comments Did enjoy being here I liked the apartment style living, you don't have to share a room with your roommate just the living room and bathroom. But sometimes the water turns brown and there is a weird smell the in air.
Did learn a lot Classes are about the size of high school classes so you can ask your professor questions if you need to.
