For the past 2 years of attending Morgan State University, I have noticed myself changing for the better. Morgan has helped guide me to better decisions academically and also socially.
Tips for prospective students
Always make sure to get a variety of opinions on schools. You make hear that a school is good or bad but everyone always has different opinions. Also, check out different activities and programs that the school may have that interests you. You never want to go to a school without fully knowing that it is the right one for you!
Academic Rigor
morgan state university has set fine standards and expectations for their students and faculty. since morgan state is one of the most well known hbcus in the state, they strive to ensure their students are doing their best academically and their faculty is doing their best to ensure that they are supporting their students on their path to a degree. from my experience, the faculty at morgan always takes the time to speak with me personally when i need to discuss grades, questions or any concerns in my classes. the faculty at morgan really go out of their way to create a personal relationship with their students to ensure that the students feel comfortable to come to them when in need and guide us. morgan state is excellent in setting standards and expectations for their students and faculty and is well deserving of our outstanding reputation as an hbcu.
Dorm Life
they say you meet all kinds of people when you go to college. living in a residence hall with all females has given me the opportunity to reach out and befriend many people, from all over the country. not only has my residence hall connected as one big family, but we have also gained a relationship with the other residence halls. all the residence halls have a unique relationship with each other and everyone is always striving to represent their residence hall because of how proud they are to live their. morgan state dorm and residence life is truly unique and special and i would definitely encourage anyone who has chosen to attend morgan to live on campus.
Food and Dining
like every campus, food and dining is not perfect at morgan state university there are two main cafeterias, the refractory hall and the cafeteria in the student center. both places offer a variety of foods and a setting where students have the opportunity to sit back and do whatever they please. many times, students go into the dining halls to eat and socialize because the setting is comfortable. i would say that the food has it's ups and downs as any place that serves food does. but mostly, the food is delicious and always has me coming back for more, especially on fried chicken wednesdays!
What to do for fun
there are a variety of activities students can do for fun. aside from going to parties and clubs, the university hosts many events and activities such as talents shows, fashion shows, spoken words, etc. also, the residence halls offer a variety of events for their residents and guests such as wii nights, movie nights, rap sessions where every gets together and socializes, etc. if you were to ask students at this university what they can do for fun here, they will tell you that at morgan state university, there is always something to do!
Bang for the buck
compared to other colleges and universities, morgan's tuition, room and board, and other fees are much cheaper. the saying, you get what you buy, does not apply to morgan state at all. although the fees are cheaper than a lot of other universities, you are definitely not getting a cheaper education.

Am learning a lot
Along with the education I am receiving in the classroom, being so far away from home gives me the opportunity to really grow up. I have learned so much about myself in the year and a half that I have been here. I value the lessons I am learning while on this campus.
Am enjoying being here
I am a member of various student organizations, and each one gives me something to do with my free time. I do not go to parties at all, and these organizations allow me to use my time wisely.
Bang for the buck
Out of state tuition can definitely be a pain, but with scholarships I am able to go to school here for next to nothing. The Honors Department is willing to work with you to ensure that your college experience is not filled with financial worries.
Tips for prospective students
Get everything (housing, financial aid, etc) taken care of as soon as possible. You don't want to find yourself scrambling at the last minute; it creates too much of a headache.
ASK QUESTIONS. You will never know unless you do.
Make the effort to get to know your professors. Contrary to popular belief, they are not as hard-nosed as they appear to be.
Schedule your classes wisely. If you are not a morning person, don't schedule an 8 AM class.
You're college experience is what you make it. Get to know people, but at the same time know whether or not the people you meet will help or hinder your progress.
Great for these types of students
Morgan is great for those wanting to attend an HBCU and for those looking to attend a school where the teachers all want to see you succeed and are willing to help you in any way that they can.

As each semester passes I find that what i have learned in the previous semesters build a foundation for what I am currently learning. If you actually read your textbook you will find that your understanding of the lectures will be much greater.
Am enjoying being here
Your college experience will be a much better one if you go in with a positive attitude and continue to have it. Some days you will get home sick but for the most part it really is a good place to be.
Bang for the buck
In state tuition is not too expensive but of course it would be better if it was free :)
Tips for prospective students
Always remember you are in school to receive your education. SCHOOL MUST COME FIRST!! There will be plenty of time for social activities and part time jobs AFTER you have completed your school work.
Great for these types of students
Students who want to receive a good education. Also for those who want to have opportunities to network with peers, faculty, and other prestigious individuals.

The engineering program here is top-rate and has a reputation of producing unique engineers. In other words, Morgan engineers tend to be more creative, more productive, etc.
Am enjoying being here
Despite being one of the few white students at an HBCU, I am quite comfortable. I have found no one who has been racist towards me, though I often get the question Why did you decide to come to Morgan?
Bang for the buck
Definitely worth it for in-state students, not so sure about out-of-state students. If you have a good enough GPA, try getting into the Honors Program. Their standards are high, but the full scholarship is definitely worth the work.

Students looking for ways to earn a degree without paying high cost and having the opportunities to apply for loans and scholarships, don't look no more.
.Recognize the environment

This is often difficult to do depending on your background. If you grew up in a city or attended a large high school, this will likely be easier than it will be for students with different experiences. Finding oneself in a community where the majority of the residents and daily contacts are young people living autonomously is often a strange sensation, especially if you are a freshman coming out of high school.
Adjust to the changes in the academic requirements
This is a step towards enjoying college that is often difficult for many people, while others may find the transition smooth and fitting. College coursework initially appears harder than other sorts of educational challenges you may have faced.
Create your solid friend group
Handling any situation in the melancholy torment of solitude is not an environmental condition that will be conducive to your success. After all, forcing one to be alone is a tool that is utilized as a harsh punishment.
Morgan has a tradition of producing some of the best and brightest graduates in a wide range of professional disciplines. Dorm Life
Dorm Life is a must. Every student should experience that chance to live on campus. This exposure give each student an idea of what it's really like to share rooms. Not only are you force to comprise with your roommates, you are also force to develop a healthy relationship.
Morgan's dorms are like real apartments. You have your own room, share a bathroom with one other person and share the kitchen and living room area.
Events and other programs like studying with a buddy are scheduled on posted boards in the hallways.
Explore your dorm early
When you get to campus, take some time in the first few days to familiarize yourself with your dorm. Find out where the laundry machines are, where the lounges and study spaces are and what they offer, and of course, where the closest bathroom to your room is. Knowing is available near you will be important when you feel like you need to...

2. Get out!
Living in a small dorm room can make anyone feel claustrophobic pretty quickly. It pays to get out of your room and go study or hang out elsewhere. Its more than just a change of scene, you will meet more people this way.

3. Organize your room early
It can be tempting to put off setting up your room at the beginning of the year when it seems like so much is going on, but it only gets busier. Take the time to set up your room, making it organized and clean so at least you know it can be. Consider bunking or lofting your beds to make create more space, and find ways to pack away winter clothes and other things you need under your bed or in a closet.

4. Give your room some personality
Just because your one room double is only slightly larger than some closets mean it has to be depressing. Get creative with decorations. Put up posters and pictures of friends, hang your track medals from high school or put up Christmas lights. The sooner you make your room your own with fun decorations, the more you will enjoy living there.

Food and Dining
The dinning hall has some of the best food you ever tasted. You have a variety of foods from all kinds of cultures. It almost make you feel like home. The area is clean, the staff is nice and the location is perfect. You'll never have to worry about not being able to eat due to the flexible hours. You'll never have to worry about not being able to sit down and eat and socialize.
When you become a meal plan member, your BEAR Card becomes your pass to use your plan in Rawlings Dining Hall and the University Food Court through meal equivalency. Each time you use a meal, it is subtracted from your weekly balance. Meals do not carry over from week to week and the meal plan resets every Sunday night. A valid BEAR Card must be presented to enter the dining hall and your card is non-transferable.
SOUL FOOD NIGHT
Its the most beloved family tradition! Join us in the dining hall once a week on Wednesday nights where we serve Fried Chicken, Collard Greens, Macaroni and Cheese and much more. Comfort food just like Mom makes!
NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH
Every Tuesday in the month of March, we will be featuring an item that's high in nutritional value. Fruits, vegetables, nuts give our bodies nutrients that keep us healthy. The more colorful your food is, the more important nutrients you'll get. Eat more red, yellow, orange and green fruits & vegetables
What to do for fun
There are lots of things to do for fun. Events are posted everywhere on the campus such as the band playing, sports events, dance and theater performances. There are plenty of games held in dorm areas as well as throughout the campus. Plenty of places to eat great food. Movies, swimming, working out at the gym, dancing and playing sports are fun things to do in near by areas.
The University Student Center includes a state-of-the-art Recreation Center, located on the 2nd Floor in room 201. Here at the Rec Center we offer 7 Billiard tables, air hockey, table tennis, and arcade games, but the fun does not stop there!

Enjoy a great opportunity to experience the latest games for the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, and Sony PlayStation 3. In addition to all the fun things we offer, if you're just looking to take the weight off your day and enjoy playing board games, then yet again we are your perfect match.
Annual Events
Back-to-School Week
Student Organizations Fair
Homecoming
Coronation of Mr. and Miss Morgan State University
Black History Month
Women's History Month
I Love Morgan Day
Bang for the buck
I live in Baltimore City, therefore I know a little more about the university and it's surroundings. I always liked Morgan because it is convenience in location and the tuition is reasonable. My mother also graduation in 2000 with a Master Degree in Engineering.
Live in the Academic Moment

A college education is a classic process-versus-product paradigm. Plenty of students complain about their work or obsess about their G.P.A., but that is just wasted energy and time. Ã?Â?Ã?Â?

Get caught up in any academic ennui. Instead, focus on your assignments, papers and projects for their intrinsic learning value; the grades will come naturally.

Don't Study in Your Room
Unless you have a spartan single and concentration powers of steel, your room is the worst place to study because of the comfort and the distractions.

Given the realities of dorm life, it's far too easy to wander across the hall and talk to your neighbor, or to have Facebook on while you glance back and forth from your book to the screen.
Get Connected to Campus Life

Academic clubs, social organizations and professional associations take on a larger, more applied and energetic meaning in college. You should jump in with both feet, even if it means getting outside your comfort zone a little bit.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
Since my mother was a graduate in the same program of Engineering, I have the advantage to know what it is really like to work as a female in this field. I love how women are starting to come out of their shell and face more and interesting careers life have to offer. Most of the students like hanging out on the bridge. The bridge is a connecting area where students have to cross each other daily. When they cross, they usually stop and talk, look over the bright and think about what a find or bad day they had. The bridge is usually crowded and tends to be a little annoying at times. But if you missed any events or if there are upcoming events, you will be sure to hear it on the bridge. Also, the dorm rooms, a place where you can have peace of mind to study and rest or a place to entertain. My friends play cards, read stories, tell jokes, eat good food and share happy and sad times together. I love having my independence and freedom. I also love the controlled environment meaning that all people are not allowed on campus if they do not attend the university. This has always been the case even when my mother attended and lived on campus years ago. The tradition of having fun in the doom rooms and making new friends has always been one of the best ways to get to know people. Even though the rooms are small, it's the best part about being a roommate is learning how to share, wait your turn and get organized. I am really enjoying the freedom and the exposure of trying to live with people I have never met before in my life.
Great for these types of students
Students who struggle with learning have a better chance of succeeding here at Morgan. The staff are well trained and thoughtful. They will work with you in small groups or one on one, if necessary. Also, for students who are physically disadvantage, the campus is equipped with ramps and elevators making it easy to access class rooms and move around with little to no help.

Clubs and Activities
There are several clubs and activities to get involved in throughout campus. Sports clubs give you a chance to experience the different types of sports that interest you. Activities such as board games and field playing fun are always a nice way to get to meet people and exercise.

Currently 18 fraternities, sororities, and social clubs organized into two governing councils provide many Morgan State students with a personal and interactive collegiate experience. Members of fraternities, sororities, and social clubs are active in all aspects of life on campus including clubs and honor societies, major campus entities such as Student Government, Inter-Residence Council, and Morgan State athletic teams. The organizations themselves provide many activities, events, and programs for the entire campus community. If nothing else, Greek Life provides a broad range of opportunities and experiences for its members from which memories and personal growth are just two of the benefits.
Morgan students are encouraged to participate in effective and challenging community service programs that address the social, cultural, educational and recreational needs of the residents in the Baltimore metropolitan area. The Office of Community Service provides interested students with the training, supervision, support, recognition and evaluation needed to participate in community volunteer programs.
Greek Life
The Greek Life has always been one of the most popular organizations on most campus. Joining a sorority or fraternity is something that most students sign up for. It's a way to bring people together, making them more powerful, teach them how to overcome weakness and how to make the most out of their life.

Campus Safety
Morgan campus is truly safe. The lighting covers the entire campus, making it safer for students to walk to and from class in the evening hours. Patrol cars are always in the area making sure nothing breaks out. Students are not allowed to bring any sort of weapon, drug or alcohol on campus, else they will face the consequences.
Morgan State University utilizes & maintains a full-time, 24/7/365 Campus Police & Public Safety department. All uniformed officers and dispatchers have gone through extensive training, and provide patrol of all residence halls, academic buildings, and campus parking areas. All officers are fully trained to respond during any emergency and crisis situations.
The safety of the Morgan State University community during an emergency is predicated on advance planning, as well as building awareness about how the plans will be implemented. Students, faculty, staff and visitors will be better prepared in an emergency if they know how the University will respond, where they can find information, and what they should do.

Key to that awareness is good communication. This site will be an essential tool for sharing plans and providing relevant information in case an emergency arises at Morgan State University or in the surrounding area. It provides recommended procedures for responding to certain emergencies. Many of these procedures are adapted from the Morgan State University Crisis Management Plan. This guide should be easily accessible in offices and other workspaces and used as a ready reference to supplement good judgment and common sense. In other words, feel free to ask questions to get comfortable on the campus and the new friends will be studying and interacting with for at least 4 years. This is make you a better person and better prepared for the world you are about to enter. Good luck to all.
