Categories Comments In three sentences My school,Norfolk State University, is crowded but the programs are amazing. The programs really prepare you for a future career in certain fields. Those programs are the reason I overlook the location of the school.
Tips for prospective students Do your research before jumping into a decision. Norfolk State is an amazing school with amazing programs but the amenities are not ideal.

Categories Comments What to do for fun The Univeristy has a bowling alley that is open throughout the week, also there are events such as karoke night that the school has
Food and Dining The cafeteria is HORRIBLE. Only go to to the caf if you are starving, breakfeast, or if it's Soul Food Thursday.
Dorm Life All of the dorms such as Midrise, Scott, Rosa, Lee, and Suites are good to stay in. If you are supposed to live in towers find a way to get out of there its horrible.
Academic Rigor If you have any problems the proffeosrs are there to help. You can always email them to ask them questions and they usaully will email you back the next day.
Tips for prospective students Don't stay in towers. It's the worst dorm hall. Save your dining dollars as long as you can because sometimes the caf will be horrible.
In three sentences Norfolk State Univeristy is a great school. Everyone is like family and you can always talk to someone. The classes are small and the proffesors are there to help you.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students underachievers who don't expect much out of life and think its ok to be demeaned and ignored.
Bang for the buck it was worth going back to nsu to finish up because I only needed 4 classes and I had in state tuition but Id NEVER pay the out of state tuition for this school, its just too crappy
What to do for fun regular college stuff
Food and Dining When I attended 20 years ago it was fine, I returned last year as an adult on line student but haven't seen the cafe in 20 years,
Dorm Life When I attended 20 years ago it was fine, I returned last year as an adult on line student but haven't seen the dorms
Academic Rigor the work is a joke, who ever heard of a college requiring 10 vocabulary words a week to be looked up and defined. THAST THE WHOLE CLASS..Its just a joke
Tips for prospective students This school was the worst - I graduated from NSU with a comm degree and couldn't wait to get outta there. Teachers who cant use a computer, typos in every email and syllabus, they don't call you back, full voice mails, attitudinal unhappy employees, late to grade, later post stuff. NSU is for people who have low expectations, and less ambition - those old deans and dept heads with PHDs from 1975 need to go so that some REAL educators can be hired to teach these poor kids.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Well it's only as good as you're smart. Just don't be stupid and stay out past 12. Don't make any trips to the 7/11 off of park ave either. With all that being said, if you ever find yourself in a pickle. You can always rely on Detective Leroy Jenkins to come in clutch for you.
Greek Life There are plenty.
Clubs and Activities There's something for everybody.
Great for these types of students What to do for fun Absolutely nothing. Especially over the weekend. The campus is so shut down. If you don't have a car then prepared to be one bored Spartan. However there is the tide if you have a few bucks to cough up and there is the inconvenient spartan shuttle.
Food and Dining It's good for what it's worth. It has it's inconsistencies every now and then but what campus doesn't. The food sucks over the weekend. No matter where you eat on campus just be prepared to spend quite a bit of time relieving yourself afterwords. Lastly the employees that serve the food can be very stingy on the portion sizes and can have nasty attitudes at times.
Dorm Life It's not bad but it could be better. I don't feel like you always get what you pay for. Also if you live with filthy suite mates or a nasty roommate, it can make things even more difficult. The smell of weed is everywhere. People can be arrogant, noisy, loud, inconsiderate and nasty, but hey that's anywhere you go. The biggest complaints I have right now are about sharing the bathrooms and the fact people just act so childish around here such as pulling fires alarms in the early hours of the morning and setting fires in buildings.
Academic Rigor Courses are challenging. The professors are good, and the tutoring program is amazing. However I will say this. They will work you harder than an 18th century slave. When it comes to being a spartan, the grind never stops as you pursue your degree. Academics are life here!!
Tips for prospective students Invest in anything that can protect you and your backpack from rain. Also be sure to bring some good rain boots. It floods here badly. If you can bring a car. Have a mindset to study at least an hour everyday. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Stay on top of everything with your advisors. Do what's best for you.
In three sentences Norfolk state university is overall an exceptional university. Although it may have it's flaws but what college doesn't. The school spirit is great.

Categories Comments What to do for fun leave campus.
Food and Dining There's not many food choices at all.
Dorm Life Eh. I stay in the freshmen girl dorm (The Towers). It's OK, at the very most. My dorm isn't awful, it's pretty average. We do have communal showers, which isn't as bad as I thought it would be. The elevators are SLOW, please be aware. What is truly the most annoying thing is our visitation policy. I believe it's only 2 or 3 overnight stays a semester, and your visitor has to be gone by 12. It's very strict for us to be an open campus.
Academic Rigor Although I'm an undeclared major, my general ed classes have been very beneficial. I've learned a lot and honestly feel like I've been challenged to work harder and become a better student. I've had the pleasure of having amazing professors, whom I feel like are definitely invested in their craft and do everything to make their classes interesting and beneficial.
Tips for prospective students Tour! Before you do anything, tour the campus with an actual tour guide. Find out about the things that matter to you- sports, organizations, majors, visitation policies, ect. You don't want to be stuck somewhere you hate, so do all the research you can before attending a school. It's not just a school, it's somewhere you are going to live for four years and grow as a person. You want to be in an environment that benefits you.
In three sentences Norfolk State is a pretty average school, but I've enjoyed my time there so far. The most interesting thing is gaining the perspective of being apart of an HBCU. I've learned a lot from my professors and classes, and overall I'm glad I've started out my college journey there.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Diverse and urban
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus It is a tradition to grunt and chant the famous lines from the movie 300, This is SPARTA!!! Hurrah hurrah hurrah!
What to do for fun It is exciting to hang out with friends, and gain friends at the Student Center. The Student Center is where the campus community comes together as one. Also, going to the Student Center's third floor is where you will find Student Activities with numerous off-campus and on-campus events for the students to take part in and have fun. Just to name a few, laser tag and skating rink outings.
Dorm Life Respect your roommates! Respect is key when it comes to you living a serene life on campus.
Tips for prospective students One of the best choices for a student with limited resources on having funds, family, and friends to help guide them through their college career is to live on campus. Living on campus has numerous perks provided to its students living on campus, as well as the opportunity to build family-like relationships and friendships within the diverse community. Also, it is key, and rule #1, to go to your classes if you're not looking to waste your time and money.
In three sentences Norfolk State University is an educational institution that is on the rise in aspects of catering to their students' needs and educational standards. The campus community is an inviting one without prejudice to the multi-cultural and overall diverse community of people who venture throughout the campus. Norfolk State University is an institution that runs on the spirit and energy of its students and faculty, and is fueled by the pride and history the campus continues to make everyday.

Academic Rigor Most professors will challenge student and when he/she leaves the class they will feel good that they have learned a lot from the class.
Tips for prospective students My tips for a new student would be not to get too overwhelmed. Take the time and organize your day with school work and down time. A healthy balance will make for a great college stuent.
In three sentences Norfolk State is a great place to continue ones education. Even though it is an HBCU everyone is welcomed with open arms. All professors are knowledgeable and are willing to help you if you have any problems.

Academic Rigor The courses you take challenge you so that you may grow mentally.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety has tightened up this year but last year it seemed like the security guards let anybody with a car pass through.
Clubs and Activities The clubs here are open to any and everybody. They are a big part of what brings the school together. You have organizations like spartan generals that focus on welcoming the freshmen and showing them the ropes or the League that focuses on serving the community and brotherhood.
What to do for fun There's so much to do for fun. There's always events being thrown by student organizations or greeks that your week is pretty much packed with things to do. Our biggest things are homecoming, Dance Marathon, and Greek week. Besides those there is always something to do even though it's not as big on a scale as the others.
Food and Dining The only bad thing about campus food is that it gets old quick. I miss home cooked meals.
Dorm Life I live in Midrise which is the honors dorm. I'd say Midrise is basically the nicest dorm on campus. I live in a suite of 6 people, 2 to a room. There's a lot of space for my roommate and I. We also have our own bathrooms which is a great plus!
Academic Rigor I only take honors courses and these classes challenge me to the upmost. The easiest way for me to deal with the coursework is get study groups together and talk to my professors.
Tips for prospective students The tips I would give to prospective students would be: 1. Talk to your advisors and teachers often. 2. If you're having trouble don't wait until midterms to ask for help. 3. Keep a group of friends that share the same values as you so you can graduate in four years. 4. Stay true to you!
In three sentences I think Norfolk State University would be ranked as an 8. The school spirit here is incredible and everybody can get involved in things on campus easily. Also, the teachers in my department are very helpful and have made my experience here great!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Open campus so anyone can just walk on campus but police do patrol the area. Be sure to walk at nights with a buddy or friend if you aren't comfortable walking at night. Also emergency boxes that call the police to escort you safely
Greek Life Campus has strong pride in the Greek fraternities and sororities.
Bang for the buck Low tuition.
What to do for fun There are a lot of parties here along with provided transportation. Numerous organizations hold events and trips that students go on.
Food and Dining Food can get redundant and you may want something new. There's a Chick Fil A, Tropical Smoothie and a Pizza Hut in the student center that's open after the cafe hours for trip convenience.
Dorm Life Dorms are spacious and the bathrooms are okay.
Academic Rigor Some staff is willing to work with you if you have difficulty in the class. But also, it's up to you to speak up for yourself and let them know that you're struggling.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to research the major you're interested in and that you really want to go into that field of study. Also, be sure to take care of your financial aid prior to moving or attending the university because it can be a long process if you wait too late. If you decide to attend Norfolk State be sure to remember it's what you make it so come with a positive attitude and be sure to get active if you wish to enjoy your time here.
In three sentences Norfolk State has good staff members who are there for you so be sure to utilize them and ask students about certain professors. Beginning of the year and each semester can be hectic with financial aid and classes so be sure to take care of your business asap.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Although the news portrays Norfolk State as being in a dangerous area, I consider my self in a safe environment at Norfolk State. I could walk around at night to go to 7-eleven and no harm would come my way. Although Norfolk State is an open campus, anyone and everyone can't get on campus. In my opinion, Norfolk State is safer than the other university down the street... *cough cough*.
Bang for the buck I planned on going to an out-of-state school, but that's a lot of money. Tuition at Norfolk State is less than $8,000 a semester. That includes meal plan, room and board, and money on your SpartanCard. If you're like me and want to commute to school, that's less than $3,000 a semester. Saving money already!
What to do for fun There are lots of things to do for fun! If you're interested in Greek Life, there is always a party being thrown. If you like sports, they hold practices for males and females in any sport. Wanna just hang out with your friends? You can hang out in the Union and watch TV in one of the lounges. There's so much to do at NSU that I can't even name them all!
Food and Dining I love the food at Norfolk State. Every day, there is a terrific meal in the cafeteria. There's also a Chick-fil-a, a Pizza Hut, and a Tropical Smoothie Cafe in the Union for those who want to venture out. It's all a part of meal plan though, so it's all good!
Dorm Life Though I had roommate troubles, I loved living in my dorm. I lived in an all-female sophomore dorm. Everyone was nice and there was always a function going on to keep us busy. They also offered tutoring to those who needed help.
Academic Rigor Norfolk State challenges you to push your limits and try hard to earn that degree! The teachers, although they seem tough, they do want you to succeed. Challenge yourself!
Tips for prospective students Norfolk State has many areas of study for you to choose from. We're a growing university for a growing people. Dorm life is wonderful, but, as always, choose your roommates wisely! There is always something to do around campus, so there's never a dull moment.
In three sentences Norfolk State University is an amazing University to attend. There are so many learning opportunities that NSU has to offer. I absolutely love my HBCU, Go Spartans!

Greek Life Oh goodness! They are really passionate!
Clubs and Activities There's really active groups that are shockingly productive, and after a while begin to annoy you with offers for participation.
Great for these types of students Social
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There's a really promiscuous 7-Eleven around the campus. STAY AWAY FROM IT!
What to do for fun I'm a major loner, so I'm not sure. But my roommates are never around so there must be a lot to do.
Food and Dining Downright delicious!
Dorm Life The midrise dorm is great... The common residential halls however.
Academic Rigor As a freshman I haven't really experienced that many courses and professor teaching styles, however this semester was rather smooth and did not require me to apply myself 100%.
Tips for prospective students Get your books early! Don't hesitate to utilize your professor's office hours. Stay open-minded and NETWORK!!!
In three sentences NSU has an obvious hierarchy amongst the students, considering academic prowess. Norfolk State University has very unique, beneficial programs that can be key to student success.

Categories Comments What to do for fun FUN !!! Everything at NSU is fun. It's on the type of person you are. Parties are everywhere around campus
Food and Dining The food is great! Monday through Wednesday they serve you the best tasting food I have ever ate. It's like my momma cooking for me every night. Thursdays and Fridays are the BEST ! Thursdays are Soul Food Thursdays and Fridays are Fish Fry Fridays. NSU do not mind feeding you. In our student union we have a Chic-Filet, Tropical Smoothie, and a Pizza Hut. AGAIN, What more Could you ask for?? Let me not forget the minni cafs by each dorms....which is unlimited food. Yes, like a buffet. We also have a bodaga.
Dorm Life Dorm life is the best ! I always wanted to be on my own and get an apartment until i started to live in my dorm BBN. Freedom is the keyword. You will 9/10 meet your life long friend inside of your dorm. Parties, activities, or whatever you want to do takes place EVERYDAY. Yes, even study time. We have a computer lab if you dont feel like walking to the library. We have 24 hour visitation. The dorms even have washing utilites on each floor. Snack machines, drink machines, I mean, what more could you ask for?
Academic Rigor The teachers at NSU are like my bestfriends. When they see that you are giving your all the will give their all just help you. Learning at NSU is super fun. It's not all about sitting in the room with a boring professor. So far, all 5 of my professors has been nothing but enjoyment. A reason to get out of my bed and go to class.
Tips for prospective students Come prepared Don't be stuck in your room 24/7 Meet new people Join Different oragnizatoins Go to different events
In three sentences Norfolk State University isn't all about partying. It's about enjoying yourself to the fullest while getting the best education of your life. Me personally, I would recommend this college to anyone.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus security works/train with the county police, however it is an open campus allowing anyone to walk on campus.
Greek Life Very active within the student body. But lack the concept of brother/sisterhood and community service projects.
Clubs and Activities Over 200 clubs and organization.
Great for these types of students There are many clubs and organization for every type of student.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus None
Bang for the buck There's is multiple stores, beauty store, and restaurants that will accept spartan bucks which is located on a students ID.
What to do for fun There's is a bowling ally on campus which has 8 lanes. A game room which has a 50 flat screen tv, 6 pool tables, seating area, and a Ping pong table.
Food and Dining The food on campus is improving each semester with the nutation.
Dorm Life The dorm life on campus can use major improvement. The dorm that I stay in and which 95% of the freshman body does as well have major problems with the hot water being turn off for days at a time and elevators out of order which forces girls to walk up and down 3 to 10 flights of stairs.
Academic Rigor So far within my studies all my professor are very helpful and stride on the meaning no child left behind. No matter how hard the classes may seem, if you have the drive to succeed the professor will do everything in their power to make sure you pass.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to get an experience of a life time. You will receive great teachings, experience the importance of helping the community, Greek life, and outstanding school spirt.
In three sentences If I would have to rate Norfolk State University I would rate it a 6 on a rate from 1 to 10; 1 being the worst. The professor that I have experienced so far and have heard about at Norfolk State University are all outstanding. However, student actives, housing, and campus landscaping can be better.

Categories Comments Campus Safety We've had incidents just like any other urban school; however, we've had quite a few less than our neighboring school ODU. You just have to remember never to go anywhere alone at night or before dawn and never leave your car unlocked.
Greek Life All D9 Organizations: Alpha Phi Alpha Alpha Kappa Alpha Kappa Alpha Psi Omega Psi Phi Delta Sigma Theta Phi Beta Sigma Zeta Phi Beta Sigma Gamma Rho Iota Phi Theta (all D9s are taken very seriously) Other Orgs: Pershing Rifles/Angels (Military) Chi Eta Phi (Nursing) Tau Beta Sigma (Music) Sigma Alpha Iota (Music) Kappa Kappa Psi (Music Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia (Music) Phi Alpha Delta (Law) Phi Alpha Theta (History) Gamma Sigma Sigma There are many other's I cannot name. There is also the order of Omega.
Clubs and Activities Almost everything you can think of.
Great for these types of students Non Traditional. Low-Income Transfer Freedom wanters People who are looking for the HBCU Experience.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Greek walk is great for a romantic late night stroll. The crackheads that hangout at 7 Eleven are harmless.... just don't give them any change. Hangout in Spartan Station, you may end up on Hot 91.1. The Student center is the major hub. Everything happens here. Homecoming is can't miss! As well as the Battle of the Bay Game As for the Battle of the Bay Basketball game, it might as well be NY Fashion: Come Correct or don't come at all.
What to do for fun There's a lot of local clubs: Fuegos', Mango's, Bentley's, Element, and Palace (if you are 21+) If that's not your thing, there a two malls: Military Circle and MacArthur which are both available by local transit and both have movie theaters (MacArthur is cheaper during the week and offers student discounts). There's always a festival, and student life is great for hosting events and joining clubs.
Food and Dining Depends on where and when you go. Everything revolves and around meal plan, which happens three times a day: 730-930, 11-130, and 430 - 730 during the weekday, and 1030-130 and 430-630 on the weekends. You have the big café and small café (close from Friday evening -sun), the small café, the student center (chic-fil-a, tropical smoothie, and pizza hut), Spartan Station (burgers, burritos, and subs) and the Bodega which doesn't have meal plan, but is perfect for late night dining when you have dining dollars have Spartan bucks. After awhile it gets old and you'll be begging your parents for money to eat off campus.
Dorm Life Lackluster to say the best. Unless you live in the suites (upperclassmen) or midrise (honors college and 3.5+) be prepared for struggle life. I promise you will hate it at first, but you will grow to love it since it is apart of the experience.
Academic Rigor Depends on the professor and the major. You range from extremely easy (Mass com) , to very hard (nursing and bio pre med). However, any major can be easy when you stay on top of your work and ask for help, and any major can be hard when you do the opposite.
Tips for prospective students 1. Keep an open mind. Norfolk State is diverse in it's student body. Don't let a few apples deter you from a great education. 2. Stay on top of everything! Financial Aid, the Registrar, and any other department you deal with. Also, make sure you get a receipt for EVERYTHING. Even if it's just a book. 3. Do two visits. One with and one without your parents. You will get a different experience and view of the campus each time. Also, don't let the big events fool you. It's not turnt up all the time! 4. Don't let the people intimidate you. When someone in FA or Student Accounts tells you no or you can't, ask to speak to their manager and then follow up with the provost or with the Dean of Students. Sometimes they will loose paperwork and blame it on the student. 5. Don't bring a car your freshman year.... it ruins the experience. 6. Be respectful but firm with your professors. Just because they have a degree doesn't mean they can't be wrong. If you believe you are right (and it matters) make sure you get evidence and take it too them. 7. Make the staff your best friend. Make sure they know your face (on a good basis) and doors that you thought were locked will OPEN. 8. Don't got anywhere alone after dark or before dawn. It's not safe. 9. Stay classy. You never know who is watching. We have a lot of powerful and influential visitors to campus... and they come with jobs and scholarships. 10. Watch out for the geese and squirrels. They run the yard.
In three sentences Norfolk State is a great university for fresh starts and second chances. As a current student, I would give my university an 8.5 out of 10.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is usually someone available in the police department to assist you if you need the help.
Greek Life The Greeks do know how to party so if you like to have fun, it would be a great idea to get close with them.
Clubs and Activities The university has sports of course like football, softball, track, band and much more. NSU also has the student government association where you can voice your opinion and make activities for the school.
Great for these types of students If a student does not mind applying themselves then they will do well.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus A new department for the major of nursing and allied health is being built.
Bang for the buck The school is definitely worth it. Of course in college you are taught to teach yourself and find out what works best for you. You have to get a feel for it during your first semester where you learn strategies in you Introduction to University Life class.
What to do for fun There are always plenty of activities to do on campus. Once a week on Fridays, the school has a pep rally and they get live. There are always bulletins posted EVERYWHERE to explain the weekly activities. There are activities for all types of people.
Food and Dining There are meal plans for on-campus students and off-campus students. The student center has tropical smoothie, pizza hut, and chick-fil-la. There is also a dining hall that has a variety of different foods. Though the freshman fifteen is the real deal so don't each when your bored.
Dorm Life I am a commuter. Though I have been in many dorms and they are clean to a certain extent.
Academic Rigor School is not easy, and if it is then the student needs to realize that they need to challenge themselves and have the confidence that if they work hard at all times and come into the subject with confidence, there will be success. Time management is the key to success. Students need to figure out what is best for them because all students learn, assess and study differently.
Tips for prospective students Regardless of the major you choose to study, I would suggest that each student comes with the mindset that college is not going to be easy. The student will have to study in and out of class. They will have to put their mind, heart, soul, and most free time into their work. The student will have to make a relationship with not only the teacher to assess their strengths and weaknesses but to get to know the teacher because networking is extremely important. It would be a amazing idea to make friends everywhere but especially in their major so that they can have help if needed.
In three sentences Norfolk State is a High five on a five point scale. I love my HBCU although the university is diverse as well. I enjoy the teachers, classes, student activities and the fact that the college attempts to challenge my mind.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus is very safe since the campus police are very active and there is a systems in place to protect students who are in trouble or need. It goes without saying that no place is perfectly safe and things to happen regardless of all and any safety precautions.
Greek Life At any and every HBCU greek life is everything, so if you're a greek you could be viewed as a star. Also Greek life is very active on campus and in the community.
Clubs and Activities There's pretty much a club for everything and if one is missing you can talk to student activities to try and get it developed.
Great for these types of students NSU is great for anybody who wants to attend an HBCU where they will be actually cared and looked out for and wont be a statistic at a big university/college.
Bang for the buck College is whatever you make it, so its up to you to get your money's worth even though colleges are very expensive.
What to do for fun There are plenty of things to do for fun like hanging with your friends, playing various games outside, visiting other dorms, attending school and non school-related parties, playing in the game room, hanging out in the student union, watching plays in Wilder and last but not least participating in the various activities going on around campus like activity hour in the union every Friday.
Food and Dining There are multiple places to eat on campus like two cafeterias, chick-fila, pizza hut, tropical smoothie, 2 bistros, burger place and last but not least a place that only serves lunch specials. The meals are usually good the only problem is meal plan tends to end too early, but one of the bistros stays open extra late.
Dorm Life I have only lived in one dormitory called Midrise which is the best dorm in my opinion hands down. I wouldn't live in any where else on campus except the spartan suites; even though, thats not a dorm. I cannot speak on any of the other dorms because I never resided there.
Academic Rigor College in general is challenging no matter the major especially when you're coming straight out of college or are a non-traditional student, so don't let anybody tell you otherwise.
Tips for prospective students If you like stem fields apply for DNIMAS and it'll pay for all your college expenses, but be warned its no walk in the park. Also make sure you are on top of your game and you work hard or you could end up staying longer than expected, which could and will happen at any college/university.
In three sentences It is a great HBCU even though allot of people trash its name; however, I recommend it for anybody and everybody who wants a relatively small loving, and encouraging HBCU type of atmosphere. I had a great time there as well as I learned allot and I am definitely prepared for my next milestone.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is something you only have to worry about at night. Every blue moon the locals begin to linger on campus, but if you call campus security the situation will be handled.
Greek Life As my sophomore year is approaching I am currently contemplating about joining a fraternity.
Clubs and Activities Norfolk State offers a variety of clubs and activities. In my freshman year I participated in several clubs. My favorite club however was The League of Extraordinary men. I also helped out with the Student government; I also played in the intramural basketball league.
Great for these types of students If you are a student who would like to grow each day into your full potential then Norfolk state is the place for you. It isn't too big or too small, for the faculty is very supportive.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Greek walk is a cool place too hang out when you don't have anything to do. When I get down sometimes I tend to climb a tree located at the front of campus(where no one can see me), for it is very relaxing.
What to do for fun Norfolk State is located near downtown of Norfolk, for downtown Norfolk has several of attractions. Also, Virginia beach is the next city to Norfolk, so when the weather began to warm up we always ended up at the beach.
Food and Dining In the Norfolk State dinning hall the food is delicious. Breakfast is my favorite, however, all over meals are delicious as well.
Dorm Life Unfortunately I did not live on campus my freshman year.
Academic Rigor College is simple. Whatever effort you put in determines the outcome of your grades. There is a lot of distractions, but you have to grow up and balance the work with fun.
Tips for prospective students I recommend that each prospective student develop a relationship with each of their professors outside of the classroom. I also would like to encourage students to get involved on campus.
In three sentences Norfolk State is a awesome school to obtain a degree and grow as a person. The campus includes students who are very diverse; the teachers on campus are very helpful and understanding.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You stay out of some places, and you'll be fine.
Greek Life Couldn't say, but it looks fun.
Clubs and Activities Alot and Fun. You would just have to fish around and see what you like.
Great for these types of students Black, diverse, open-minded, edgy, fashionable, dedicated, hard-working.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have a Greek walk that shows the timeless memories of organizations of NSU. Also, we have a cool student student center that people hang out in. Bowling Alley, and much much more.
Bang for the buck Something like that. Its a cheap school, but good education.
What to do for fun Yoga, Basketball, all-around sports. Just spontaneous activities that you would have to look out for.
Food and Dining The food is 4 stars. Really good.
Dorm Life 4 stars because the dorm life is very different. There are dorms at NSU that resemble the ghetto, and there are dorms that resemble a nice hotel. It all depends on where you would like to stay.
Academic Rigor I feel it is a challenge if you make it one. Meaning, it is a challenge when you want to do more than what is expected of you.
Tips for prospective students Get out and find activities to do. Not a lot is publicized so you will have to go look for them on campus. Also, say no. That's right. Say no to drugs, alcohol, and anything else that is detrimental to your education. All the fun can wait. Get that education first. Study on those particular nights, not party. You know you have a test in the morning so don't stay up until 4am. Plan accordingly, and you'll be fine.
In three sentences Norfolk State University is a diverse campus full of students yearning for education. There are times in which they only yearn for partying, but eighty percent of the time, its education. The staff and faculty does its best to make sure that we are all accommodated accordingly.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Homecoming and Tailgating!!! Food, fun, and friends during football season. Need I say more?
Bang for the buck Most school sponsored activities are free and there are many shops and services that offer student discounts on specific days for simply showing your Student I.D.
What to do for fun Take in a movie, see a show, go shopping, or be adventurous and take a voyage to the beach. Or, you can get a more local social experience by taking advantage of the many free activities that occur on campus daily for most of the school year. Don't forget to show that Spartan pride while you're at it!
Food and Dining There are many options on and around campus to satisfy any appetite or culinary preferences. Depending on your transportation options, an opportunity to experience some of the best premiere dining and seafood choices on the entire east coast are all within reach. However, the campus meal plan(s) are the best choice and easiest way to save money.
Dorm Life It's an excellent opportunity to explore living with others, work on developing and improving social skills, and begin experiencing the ins and out of budding independence. The facilities are better than average and the security features will make you feel as comfortable as being at home.
Academic Rigor You Will Be Tested! It is a good idea to come prepared to work hard and also tackle the other obstacles that are attached to the college experience such as exercising time management, mastering your environment as well as it's resources for your academic benefit, and using what you've learned to achieve personal growth.
Tips for prospective students Come to Norfolk early, get to know your way around campus, and become familiar with the immediate surrounding area and transportation options to make your transition to life at NSU as smooth as possible.
In three sentences There's no better place to get an education and begin the rest of your life than Norfolk State University. Categories Comments What to do for fun SGA has many activities for you to be sociable. The easiest way and the most important way to have fun is to just be yourself. Enjoy yourself and others will enjoy you.
Food and Dining The cafe....no, you will get tired of it. The union is alright, but you can't have those foods everyday. Some days the cafe does serve some delectable items, it just isn't everyday.
Dorm Life Dorm life is one of the best things about coming to college. You get to meet new people and explore new things. NSU has some wonderful dorms in all backgrounds from athletic to honors and everything in between. I love the dorm life present at Norfolk State.
Academic Rigor While most classes are difficult, if you study and maintain the proper attitude about your classes, you will be just fine at NSU. Overall, it is important to just do your work and form a study group with a collection of your peers.
Tips for prospective students This is college, which is nothing like high school. You need to come with the mindset of learning what you have to learn and doing what you have to do to get out on time and go live your life. Enjoy your college career, but don't make it all that your about.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities Sister Circle Organization is a wonderful organization for females to join because it is based on empowering our fellow sisters and providing awareness and service to those around us. Everyone upholds the mission of this organization by being their sister's keeper regardless if they are sisters by blood or not.
What to do for fun Every Friday in the Student Center, Greek Organizations and the rest of the student body gather around for the DJ to play the latest hits and to see the greeks hopping. Also, various organizations on campus are constantly conducting activities to bring excitement, fun, and awareness on various topics to the campus body. The Student Activities department also comes up with numerous activities that students may get involved in which includes things such as laser tag, bowling, skating, boat rides on the Chesapeake Bay, and more!
Food and Dining The food is great! Provided through meal plan options, food choices range from home style buffet cooked foods to Chic Fil-A, Pizza Hut, and Tropical Smoothie Caf©. There are other dining services offered as well that are loved by the student body.
Dorm Life It would not be fair not to mention that where you end up living on campus does take a toll on your education and comfort. Some dorms are more comfortable than others as far as the specific groups of student body that live there. Freshman dorms are of course the problem areas, but that still does not hinder one's ability to achieve academic excellence.
Academic Rigor Norfolk State takes education very serious. If you wish to continue striving as a successful student throughout your years at the university, it is important to stay on top of your priorities. Education does not pay for itself until it has been achieved and applied to the betterment of your life and others. Use it wisely and strive to learn more as everyday differs from the last.
Tips for prospective students First things first, do your work as it is assigned and ask questions when absolutely necessary! There are no rewards in falling behind in class as the other students progress on to the next level. No one wants to be left behind the pack, wasting money that they had to pay for their education when academic situations could have been resolved as they occurred.
In three sentences Norfolk State University is a beautiful higher learning institution that has a lot to offer prospective students. There are a variety of sports and campus activities that the institution is known for, and has student morale on top levels of determination and strive for completion towards their future careers. Norfolk State University has an excellent aspect on what student life should encompass on campus, and what the students expect to gain from attending the university.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I think Norfolk State really focuses on the safety of the campus and the students. Even though it is an open campus, we do have a police station and many campus police always on site.
Bang for the buck Bang for the buck is an idiom some would use when it comes to college life and the finances that come along with it. You should most definitely get your moneys worth, focusing enough to finish and obtain your degree in 4 years or even sooner.
What to do for fun Sometimes there isn't usually much to do for fun, party and event wise. However, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in things for fun. I think move in week and Homecoming are the times where there is a lot to do.
Food and Dining In my opinion the food and dining is one of the best features at Norfolk State University. There are a couple of dining halls which offer breakfeast, brunch, and dinner. We also have a Chick Fil A, Tropical Smoothie, and Pizza Hut in our Student Center.
Dorm Life The dorm life at Norfolk State didn't quite end up meeting my expectations this semester. I guess it all depends on which hall you're placed in though. The hall rooms range from small to large, over crowded to spacey, and some clean while some are not.
Academic Rigor You should always expect difficulty and challenges in life, especially when you reach college. It all comes down to adjustment and being focused. Academic rigor could either get the best of you or end up teaching you something, being a lesson learned, as it should be.
Tips for prospective students Prospective students should definitely take the time to plan ahead so they can have a smooth and somewhat simple transition. They should also understand their rights and responsibilities and value themselves.
In three sentences Norfolk State University is a decent open campus, offering many majors to both Undergraduate and Graduate students. However, it could improve in some areas. I do believe it's a good university to expand your education and obtain your degree though.

What to do for fun There is ALWAYS something to do fro fun. On our campus, we have a HRT Tide Station. Once on the Tide, you can go to MacArthur Mall (which is 3 stories tall), Harbor Park, Military Circle Mall (with the help of riding the HRT Bus), and other locations. On campus, we have fun, yet safe parties held in our gym (Echols). We have off campus parties that our buses provide transportation to and from. Pep Rallies, Battle of The Bands, sport events, and the list goes on.
Food and Dining There are several building to choose from to eat. I find myself oftentimes going to the Big cafe (Scott Dozier) or the Spartan Station. The food at both locations are good.
Dorm Life I stay in the Honors Dorm, but the dorm life is a great experience. I would recommend dorm life over commuting because it helps you gain friendships, independence, and you are right there with all the fun and activities.
Academic Rigor The courses at Norfolk State are pretty challenging, however, the professors are there to answer any questions you may feel the need to ask.
Tips for prospective students Some helpful tips for prospective students: -Explore the campus. Get out there and get to know the school. Know where things are. -Be active. If there are clubs you want to know about then do not be afraid to ask. Odds are there are clubs for every topic of interest and if there isn't, then start one! -Become and remain studious! The number one way to be successful here is to have a balance between fun and studies. However, please always remember that your studies are first priority! -Get to know your professors the first chance you get.
In three sentences I love Norfolk State. It's diverse, challenging, and there are endless opportunities to become in the loop by joining major-based clubs. It's never boring here neither with all the schools extracurricular activities.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Honestly campus safety is ok. I feel as safe here as I do in any other public place. The surrounding neighborhood has had reports of car vandalism and theft, and unfortunately this has also happened on campus. However I do like the option the police station gives students to call them for an escort around campus once it gets dark. I also like the many emergency poles we have located on campus.
Greek Life As with most HBCU's Greek Life at Norfolk State University is exciting even you decide not to pledge. If you do, its a great way to network and perform community service. Just don't get caught up in the hype :-)
Clubs and Activities There are ENDLESS organizations that one can belong to on campus. Just about every major has a club and honor society not mention other organizations such as Sister Circle or our dance team, Hot Ice.
Great for these types of students Norfolk State University is great for first-time college students, African-Americans, non-traditional students, music majors (our band is locally famous), nursing majors (currently nurses who graduated from NSU are earning the highest median wages in VA!), and anybody who wants to expand their views on social and racial equality.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Our band, The Spartan Legion is sure to get you on your feet during all of the football games! We always compete with other bands from VSU, Hampton, North Carolina A&T, and other colleges in the DMV area. Their is a high level of respect for the Legion.
Bang for the buck If you want money at Norfolk State the key is to be organized and aggressive! However the people in admissions always have information that might help you out.
Food and Dining The food is pretty good on campus. We have Chick-Fil-A, Pizza Hut, and Tropical Smoothie, but even the cafe food is good. You may even get a down-home feel with Soul-Food Fridays when the cafe cooks food specifically of African-American origin.
Dorm Life Depending on where you live on campus, your dorm life experience may be different. The Towers are the lowest ranking dorms, while the Spartan Suites are the most sought after living arrangements with apartment-style suites allowing for way more independence than any of the other dorms.
Academic Rigor Although Norfolk State is a historically black college/university (HBCU), the faculty here are quite diverse, allowing for an enriching educational experience. Although it may seem you are up to your ears in papers, the professors I've had have always done their best to make themselves available to their students. If you can't reach them during office hours, you can call, email, or set up an appointment. Some classes are easier than others, but most of them are about the same with the usual term-papers, tests, and presentations as any other institution.
Tips for prospective students When it comes to Norfolk State, the first rule is to ignore the stereotypes, and seek your own information. I almost made the mistake of overlooking NSU because I heard anyone can get in. What I realized is this statement is not true, however Norfolk State's commitment to trying to better African-American students does allow for our flexibility in admissions. It does not mean this school is an easy school. You will still need all of your discipline, and time management skills to succeed here.
In three sentences Norfolk State University was not my first choice for college, but not a day goes by that I regret attending this school. The enduring relationships I've built with faculty and peers have been crucial to my development. Because of Norfolk State University, I am a better young woman with an initiative to give back to the world.

Dorm Life I live at home, but I know from other students that it is very convenient and because the campus is small, it doesn't take long to get to class.
Academic Rigor I am a social work major and as a freshman, I am required to take the Introduction to University Life class. I hear other student speak of how their class is easy, but being that the social work program is number seven in the country there is a lot more work.
In three sentences I chose to go to Norfolk State University because I wanted to belong to an organization that I could be proud of. Categories Comments Campus Safety Norfolk State University has their own police on campus that are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is a closed campus and student IDs are a must to have when entering campus as well as while on campus. Residence halls are monitored 24 hours a day and there are several safety procedures that are always followed. Campus alerts are also a plus when it comes to being alerted if anything was to happen!
Greek Life Norfolk hosts the divine nine as well as many other sororities and fraternities. There is almost a Greek for anything you can think of.
Clubs and Activities There is a club for every need, and you can make one if your not satisfied. The university is always hosting events such as Activity hour on Fridays, bingo, skating, speed dating, and the infamous Echols gym parties! Just to name a few.
Great for these types of students Athletic- Basketball, Baseball, Football, Bowling, Tennis, etc. (NSU held 5 MEAC titles in 2011-2012)
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The new 40 million dollar library is a new hang out spot. Somewhere you can have group study or your own individual study room. There is also the student center that offers a game room as well as open space where many students congregate.
Bang for the buck One of the cheapest universities that I've found that offers many great scholarships. The price does not reflect quality, what you get for the price is amazing.
What to do for fun Norfolk is home of many attractions, festivals, historic venues, clubs, shops, malls, movies, and best of all, it's really close to Virginia Beach and Hampton. Not far from your friends at other institutions. It is really in the heart of the 7 cities. So the question really is.. What is there not to do at NSU? Possibilities are endless, it's all up to you!
Food and Dining There are many options for food at Norfolk State University. There are fast food places such as Chickfila, Pizza Hut, and Tropical Smoothie, as well as specialized food places like spartan subs, and an a burrito place. Then of course, there are the all you can eat buffets, formally known as the cafeteria.
Dorm Life Most dorms at the university are some of the best dorms out of any HBCU. Many of the dorms offer community style dorms, but there is a coed honors dorm that offers suite style living. (Don't worry, it's not that bad! It actually allows you to bond more with your fellow [insert school mascots name]. ) The best of them all is the Spartan Suites, you'd soon know exactly what they are! They are apartment style dorms that anyone within good standing that is 20 or a junior can stay in.
Academic Rigor Despite Norfolk State University being an HBCU, usually thought of as a lower level institution, the academics are great. NSU is accredited in an array of subjects and the classes are rigorous.
Tips for prospective students Weigh your options. See if the school offers what you want. We've all heard the repetitive advice such as that, but did you know it is absolutely true? Yes, there is a reason for you hearing it repeatedly. Of all the advice, the best piece is to go with your heart, make sure that you absolutely love the college that you are planning to attend, it will be your new home!
In three sentences Norfolk State University is a great Historically Black institution. It provides an at home feeling and full support system for students. If a student is considering an historically and traditionally enriched, smaller university, NSU will meet their needs.

Greek Life Group of individuals (male/female) 9 Greek Organizations. They are called the Divine 9. They do community service.
Clubs and Activities Legasi Club - where gays & straight people meet; SGA - Student govenment; Spartan General - Older students mentor incoming freshmens
Great for these types of students Students with family or other problems can always find some student on campus that can help them get you through it. There is always someone who is willing to listen & give you advise because they have experienced something or no someone else who has.
Bang for the buck Getting the most you can with the least amount of money.
What to do for fun There is so much to do! There is always a party going on somewhere on campus. I loved when the battle of the step teams came around and when NSU played against other schools. Many of the students head for Virginia Beach when the weather is hot.
Food and Dining The food was okay. The prices were a little more than some of us students could afford because most of use don't work. I liked the fact that there was a variety of food to choose from and you could eat at different locations.
Dorm Life Dorm life was great my freshman year. You get to meet a lot of new people. You learn to share things such as the bathroom and shower with strangers who eventually becomes your friend or acquaintance. Most students will have a roommate that they do not know & it all is a learning experience that can be challenging.
Academic Rigor You have to study hard. NSU is not a place you can skeem on & think you can get over. If you don't keep your grades up, you can lose any financial aide or scholarships. Academically, NSU really wants you to succeed and they offer scholarships to those who are willing to reach certain GPA.
Tips for prospective students If this is your first time away from home, its very easy to get caught up into partying. Be careful; stay focused; watch your association. Concentrate on your studies because if you don't, you will find yourself failing semester-after-semester.

We also have lots of fun clubs that you could join.

Categories Comments Campus Safety As of late, I've never had a problem on campus. I feel safe in all of my classes. The other day, there was a smoke scare in Brown's Hall, but we were all alerted in ample time.
Clubs and Activities I recently became the President of our newly organized Chess Club. The Chess Club is the newest up and coming organization on campus. The Chess Club will join in with the University's Orientation team to teach Chess to ALL new freshmen.
What to do for fun You can always play CHESS for fun. Go to an on campus theatrical production or sporting event. Visit your friends/instructors (old & new) on campus.
Food and Dining I suggest getting a meal plan if you're on campus daily, it's more economical. Try to eat healthy and at a regular time daily. Maintain healthy food choices.
Dorm Life Watch your surroundings at all times. Get to know all of your fellow residents. Make sure that your room and personal effects are safe at all times.
Academic Rigor Never leave a lecture without being certain of the expectations. Monitor your progress in all classes (study for each class everyday). Complete all of your projects in a timely fashion.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is located in a ghetto neighborhood but the campus itself is fine and is patrolled by the police.
Great for these types of students Those who are frugal and trying to save a buck!
Bang for the buck The price is very low...the lowest in Hampton Roads for a four year college. There's no use going to some fancy school and ending up up to your eyeballs in debt upon graduation. You get out of it what you put into it anyway. Try Norfolk State.
What to do for fun Norfolk State University is conveniently located to public transportation so you can go to the mall and the movies.
Food and Dining There are lots of dining options. Be careful in the cafeteria though. The food is excellent and is all you can eat so you may overeat.
Dorm Life I only stayed in a dorm for one semester. It was okay. Dorm life is dorm life. Living with a whole lot of other people is not going to be easy. I don't care what school you go to.
Academic Rigor It all depends upon the teacher really. A lot of people have this stereotype of Norfolk State as being an Easy Pass school. This is not necessarily so. And you do get out of it what you put into it.
Tips for prospective students Check your university email daily because there is lots of useful information from scholarships to internship opportunities. Enjoy the extracurricular activities there--school is a whole experience, not just books.
In three sentences Norfolk State University is low cost and has numerous programs to help students. It is located in a ghetto neighborhood but once you get on campus, you will be fine. As with any school, you get out of it what you put into it.

What to do for fun Nothing to do for fun, besides Echols dance.
Food and Dining They have many food places to go to. The mall is not that far,Chinese food is the best!
Dorm Life Apply for a suite, because you get your own bathroom. Sharing a bathroom with other girls in the hall is the worst. You get to meet new people and they have fun programs to go to.
Academic Rigor It really depends on your major.
Tips for prospective students Have all your financial information (FAFSA) completed early and pay all your money upfront. Do not wait till the last minute to register for classes.

Categories Comments Campus Safety they have security posted at the entrance ways although they have an open campus, no real major issues at this time. most of the issues are in the areas where students live off-campus.
Greek Life yes they have all of the fraternities and sororities as most hbcu college campuses.
Clubs and Activities greek life, marching band, dance company, and volunteer opportunities.
Great for these types of students virginia residents.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus i like the pass and review that the marching band does during the home games. although they play a lot of old school music, their marching style differs from other schools because they march military style and this is refreshing from other college bands. i wish they could get enough votes to attend the honda battle of the college bands so people in other areas can see them.
Bang for the buck if you are a reside within the state of va, then this is the school for you. they treat out-of-staters as if they are second class citizens instead of being glad they are coming to the school and spending monies in their state. also, decisions made do not take into account students from out-of-state, so it is hard to make future traveling plans, and although their motto is norfolk, the institution of choice, they tend to forget that out-of-state students chose their school too, and they could have stayed within their state.
What to do for fun football games, their team won the meac championship this year. they have school wide parties. also, clubs and greek life are always having activities that are school-wide.
Food and Dining the food and dining areas have high marks and the cafeteria workers are very nice. nothing but high marks here!
Dorm Life they will change your room accommodations for their needs. if you selected 2 room mate dorm room, they will put another person in at their leisure. you are responsible for contacting student accounts and informing them of the pay differential 2 room mates versus 3, which is a difference of $154. also, in dorms, you may have rodents in some of the dorms.
Tips for prospective students make sure you keep track of all scholarship monies and payments made to the university. you have to show your payments made to the school often and they are quick to remove you from classes until you prove them of their error. also, department financial aid, student accounts, and housing have poor communication between departments.
In three sentences norfolk is much to expensive for the education and accomodations for out-of-state students. they generally cater to their va students, like most states, but they let it be known they look out for their own. you also have to watch your class schedule as a freshman because they schedule you in classes as the same time as other classes, and you have to work it out with the professors how you will attend the classes.

Greek Life The Greek Life is very much known here on campus. There is a Greek Walkway on campus where you'll see the Greeks hanging out if you want to meet them or talk with them.
Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs on campus that there is no reason that anybody can not be involved with the school.
Great for these types of students If you want a sport to play, Norfolk State has many.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The campus, at first, is a little confusing, but after a while the campus becomes very familiar to you.
Bang for the buck What you pay for is definitely what you get. Your time is never wasted here. The teachers here want you to learn and they definitely want you to leave with something that will affect your life.
What to do for fun If you want some fun, join a club, sorority/fraternity, join a team, get involved. There's something for everyone to do here.
Food and Dining In my opinion, the food is amazing! There are many places for you to dine on campus. Ther are also many choices for you to pick from, which is a huge treat!
Dorm Life Living in a dorm with other people is a good way to meet new people and make life-long friends. You learn so much from your peers.
Academic Rigor Norfolk State wants you to keep up with your good grades. If you want to get scholarships and keep scholarships, keep your grades up.
Tips for prospective students Always stay focused. If you want to make it into a school like this, you have to have good grades, and you have to maintain a good GPA.

Bang for the buck Norfolk State University is a wonderful school the education you'll receive is well worth the price that you will pay. One thing you must do is stay on top of your financial aid. Make sure you get everything completed as early as possible believe it or not it makes a difference. One thing you dont want is to struggle to find money at a school you love.
Am enjoying being here I love all my fellow SPARTANS, especially the band and the Spartan Cavalry members they are so full of life and have such school spirit there is not an event that I have been to where the people were just standing around everybody has energy and are always hype.
Am learning a lot The professors and teachers at Norfolk State University are very helpful although this is college and people say professors dont care. They will provide as much help as you need, even it means taking personal time out of their schedules to help you. Also, Norfolk State is great for students intending to major in math and sciences due to the plethora of programs that are offered. Lastly, Norfolk State is great for students that are willing to put in time and work in order to achieve and be successful in their prospective careers.
Tips for prospective students For the students entering Norfolk State University I suggest that you begin on work on the first day its given, keep records of all transactions you make regarding your account, and if you need help sign up for a tutor immediately to ensure you have a chance to improve your grade.

They make sure they can accommodate each students need to the best of their ability. Finally, Norfolk State University offers many different internship and networking opportunities to help students land in a good career once they graduate.

Am learning a lot The faculty at Norfolk State University will do what it takes to help students make sure they understand concepts necessary in order to do well in the class. Tips for prospective students Tips for prospective students are to make sure you choose your colleges wisely. Check out it's academics record and graduating students in the prospective field. Make sure this is what you want and not your family because your family could make it harder for you. Be you and not someone else that your family want you to be. Life is all about living for you even though your parents are paying your tutition.
Bang for the buck This college is very easy on the pockets because it is not as expensive as most colleges or universities in the surrounding area and although it's the least expensive, there academics are the best.
Am enjoying being here These past semester that I been here have been enjoyed, but also educational. There is no other institution like Norfolk State University. Yes, you are there to be educated but they also know how to have fun when it comes to certain aspect of having fun.

Tips for prospective students Prospective students should remember to stay focused and not let the fun of campus life sidetrack them. They should also practice time management so that their priorities will be well balanced. Time management gives one time to study and enjoy the fun with peers.
Bang for the buck Norfolk State is well worth the tuition that is paid. They do not try to take your money, or swindle one for more money than is actually needed for school. I believe a person will be satisfied about the tut ion they have paid to attend NSU.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy being here because of the atmosphere on the campus is so heart-felt. Everyone is friendly and the staff and students do not mind helping one another. I also enjoy being here because departments for specific major.s make sure that one has all the information they need to excel
Am learning a lot The classes and professors at Norfolk State are great. There is so much to learn and gain from the materials taught as well as the professors. The professors do not mind explaining the materials thoroughly, and they encourage everyone to ask questions.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Norfolk State University is great for students who want to get a headstart in the world. This institution breeds leaders and develops positive, hard-working, contributing members of society. NSU is known for its excellent Nursing Program and its nationally renowned Music Program. This university is for students who want to learn in a well-rounded, student-friendly, family-oriented environment. It is great for students who stand out amongst their peers and would like to continue making their mark on the world.
Tips for prospective students My biggest suggestion for new freshmen entering college would be not to underestimate college life. When most people tell you about college, they only tell you the good stuff. They tell you about the parties, the staying-up-late, the long weekends, but they fail to tell you about the hours of commitment to studying it takes to pass classes. In return, a lot of students enter college life unprepared for the work load. Also, come prepared to be your own person and live your own life. Your parents can no longer wake you up in the morning or call your teachers to discuss your grades. When you step onto a college campus, the responsibility is placed in your hands and it is up to you to make the most of your higher learning experience.
Bang for the buck Norfolk State University is worth every penny. It is impossible to put a dollar amount on the experience that you will gain from attending NSU. Aside from its great balance of the academic and social environments, the spirit and school pride here is amazing. At NSU, I have gained networking opportunities and developed friendships/relationships that I will cherish for a lifetime. Once you're a Spartan, you're a Spartan for life. The family-oriented atmosphere here is what caused me to fall in love with Norfolk State University. It made being away from home for the first time a great experience and a smooth transition.
Am enjoying being here As a Student Ambassador and a member of the NSU Concert Choir, I assure you that there is something here for everyone to enjoy. Whether you love to sing, act, play an instrument or a sport, or just interact with other people, there is always something for you to get involved in and to be a part of something great. If you aren't that great on stage, but you shine brightly in the classroom, there's also an Honors Program that caters to students who excel academically as well. For those students who study hard during the week but let their hair down on the weekends, you can also find fun events to participate in once you've worked hard all week long. The social life at Norfolk State University is what you make it.
Am learning a lot Norfolk State University not only provides a very high standard of learning in the academic realm, but also promotes growth in the individual. As a pre-nursing major, I have attained a lot of information that will help me to excel in my field of choice. However, NSU has also helped me to develop characteristics that will aid me in becoming a contributing member of society, such as responsibility and independence.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students For students who have high expectations for themselves or will enjoy, not just having fun but learning while doin so this would be a great school for that individual.
Tips for prospective students I would say don't get distracted. Make sure college is something you really want to pursue before applying. When you have decided to attend be focused on getting the work done before anything else.
Will enjoy being here This campus is full of energy. I don't see why a student wouldn't want to learn here at this college. With all the help that is offered i believe that I will be able to set high standards for myself and reach my goals.
Will learn a lot I think this would be a great college to attend. I know a few individuals who attend or have attended and one of them is going back for their master's degree. I have also been on campus and find that the environment is very positive and will help in learning process. The students are also very helpful when it comes to getting around on campus.

Tips for prospective students College is the best invention of school ever made. Norfolk State makes sure of that. They offer help for the subjects that seem tough to you, the instructors are understanding and willing to work with you. However, this school is not all about working and studying and having no life. NSU has on campus parties and many activities for the students to enjoy.
Am enjoying being here Many people at NSU are friendly and have nothing but love and Spartan Pride to share with fellow students.
Am learning a lot I am in the Nursing associate degree program right now. It is a tough program, but is defiantly worth it. You get action first semester when you have your clinical at Nursing Homes.

Tips for prospective students Make sure attend all of your classes, and do all of your school and homework. Do not get wrapped up in the extra activities, make school your first priority. Use career services to help you to find a job in your field. You should also use programs such as STARS and ACCESS for tutoring tto help you in your classes.
