They have a bowling alley in the main hall with your standard gym. The nice thing about the area is that there is a festival within driving distance (if not in the town itself ... Corn Fest anyone?!) almost every weekend! You have a shopping strip and movie theatre a bus hop away. Chicago and Rockford (two large cities with a lot more to offer) are less than an hour away if you have a car (or know someone who does)... And everyone knows a big city like Chicago basically has everything going on! I would suggest patronizing the local bookstore and comic book stores - owners are incredibly nice and appreciate an interested student.

Things to do for fun would be touring Dekalb. It's a small rural area. If you like quiet places then NIU is for you.

I wasn't at NIU very long before I transferred, but even then it was apparent that Greek life ruled the campus. Sure there are other events put on every once and a while, but for the most part it's all Greek life. I definitely suggest joining a club or organization if you want something to do for fun. Otherwise, you're not going to find anything exciting to do in Dekalb.

a lot of fun events happen around campus almost every week. if you take a walk around campus, you'll see announcements about a special dinner or a celebration written all over the sidewalks. they even have anime conventions.

You could join a organization, they tend to plan pretty cool events. You could plan things with your floormates also or you could attend the events that NIU have.

Northern Illinois University is located in DeKalb, which is more in the country. They have the annual Corn Fest in downtown DeKalb around September. There is also the annual Pumpkin Fest in the neighboring town of Sycamore. Downtown DeKalb has some restaurants and a few little shops, it's a small town feel. There are a lot of restaurants close to the university too. There are Huskie buses that students can take for free. They have a route that will take you to Walmart, Target, and other stores in a little shopping area about 15 minutes away. DeKalb is about an hour away from Chicago, so there is that for an escape if you need it. There is a special Huskie bus that will take you to the train station in Elburn on the weekends and from there you can take the train to Chicago.
