Dekalb is only an hour from Chicago, the Chicago-land area. If you're looking for a small town, but still want somewhat of a city life, this school is great for you!

There are many clubs and Greeks organizations to join. If you can't find a club that has everything you want, you are able to bring up your own organization. If organizations aren't your thing, there are other activities you can join campus wide. There's the Huskie den, which offers video games, bowling and pool tables at reasonable prices for our college student pockets.

Personally I like to stay active so I joined a club volleyball team. There are many different club sports teams that you can participate in so I always recommend that students check out their options. Another way I chose to stay active and have fun in the community was by joining a sorority. I highly recommend Greek Life for incoming students. This was a great way for me to get to know a whole community on campus, make friends, and always have something to do during the week and weekends. Greek Life is NOT about partying, it is about making connections for your future. Many times Greek Life has gotten a bad reputation because of Frat-boy movies and Legally Blonde. Don't let someone else make that decision for you, go through the recruitment process even if you don't think its for you. I was the oldest girl in my recruitment group yet I managed to make at least 20 friends the first day! The experience as a whole was the most effective way I made friends and got involved when coming to Northern.

Things that are fun at Niu are the husky football games! attend them all I recommend it! Also they have parties and big events that are always fun to attend. The art building is a relaxing place to be for me. Also around Halloween the haunted house is a event you don't want to miss!

The Huskie Den (a kind of bowling, gaming, pool area) is always fun to visit. Thursday nights are only $5! Otherwise, there is a wide variety of sporting events or arts shows/performances that students can go to. During the fall there were a ton of haunted houses, corn mazes, and orchards to visit too.
