    Campus Safety

Small campus, safe community and a friendly public safety team. The safest I've felt on an OSU campus.

    Clubs and Activities

Cascade Adventures takes students out for free on hikes and trips! Headwaters, the back to school trip for first year students, had a 4 day canoe trip or a 3 day backpacking trip when I went. We even have a gear rental store where you can check out camping stuff, paddle boards, canoes, and snowshoes.

Great for these types of students

This is not a traditional campus. We're small and growing, but it allows our students who want a non-traditional college experience to still fit right in. I didn't want greek life and football games, I wanted to spend my weekends camping and floating the river. This campus is great for students who want a smaller college and love to spend time outside with like minded friends.

    Bang for the buck

Getting an education in Bend is amazing.

    What to do for fun

Bend has so many recreation opportunities. Snowboarding at Bachelor 20 minutes from campus, tons of breweries, live music almost every night, hiking, Phil's trails mountain biking 10 minutes from campus, and more. There's never a time when there's nothing to do in Bend!

    Food and Dining

restaurant quality food, they're only cooking for a few hundred people if that, so the food is generally pretty good! My favorite are their grilled chicken fajitas or Scallop salad.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are nice and quiet, but the community in the residence hall is awesome. I lived with a sophomore and above community, and we always had fun.

    Academic Rigor

I have taken a variety of classes, and all of my professors have been extremely helpful!

    Tips for prospective students

Think about where you want to be living and how you want to be spending your free time.

    In three sentences

I love getting an Oregon State University education in Bend! The small campus has a strong community, It feels like I am taking classes and living life in Bend. We aren't just stuck on a campus, our town is our campus!

    Campus Safety

    Always present, always ready.

    Greek Life

    None, thank goodness

    Clubs and Activities

Non traditional, but we have rock climbing, skiing snow-boarding, and cycling. And you can compete competaqtively

Great for these types of students

Adventurous outdoorsy folks. 20 minutes from Mt. Bachelor, 40 minutes from Smith Rock, 5 minutes from the Deschutes river trail, 30 minutes form Tumalo falls, and the list honestly goes on and on...

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Cascades Adventures!!! Free outdoor recreation excursions completely planned, paid for, and orchestrated by them! All you have to do is sign up.

    Bang for the buck

I have never felt more prepared for my future than I do after being educated at OSU-Cascades. The resources such as cascades adventures, career development center, and meetings with professors are practically worth the price of tuition in and of themselves. I look forward to going to class and learning from my professors

    What to do for fun

Bend. And to help with that, we have Cascades Adventures who literally plans outdoor recreation events like rock climbing at Smith Rock, hiking, camping at Umpqua hot springs, and rafting. If you're interested in doing activities on your own they also have a gear rental store where you can get stuff for incredibly cheap! Aside from that there are always tons of events in town, and Student life never fails to have events planned to help improve the student experience.

    Food and Dining

OH MY GOODNESS IT IS SO DELICIOUS. The chefs here are actually making food they are proud of. The recipes are unique, exploitative, and absolutely delicious. I am constantly surprised and impressed by their food. I worked in the Dining hall for a term and got to see behind the scenes, it is just a bigger version of my mom's kitchen back there. Fresh ingredients, herbs and spices, locally sourced, and cooked the day of.

    Dorm Life

People form a community within the Residence Hall, and RA's are constantly putting great effort into creating events and positive student experiences.

    Academic Rigor

I spent some time at another University and found my self flying by with A's, no effort, and no interest. I was not getting my money's worth from my education, and didn't feel I was actually being trained for anything. At OSU-Cascades I have been challenged, I have grown, and I feel like I am actually being given tools and confidence to enter the field.

    Tips for prospective students

My best tip for prospective students is go where your resources are available to you, where relationships are attainable, and where you see professors doing the work you see yourself doing.

    In three sentences

This University has high caliber professors that are given the capacity to fully engage with their students on a meaningful and beneficial level. The community here is strong and resources are abundant and accessible. There is constant growth and improvement everywhere, never do we stop growing and changing; students are active participants in the evolution of OSU-Cascades, it is what we make it.

    Campus Safety

There is no campus. But your mind and soul will be eaten alive by the amateurs in this program.

    Greek Life

    None.

    Clubs and Activities

Not writing is the biggest activity you'll do.

Great for these types of students

If you just want to say you have your "MFA" but don't actually want to be a real artist.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

You won't write or read or learn anything of substance.

    Bang for the buck

You could waste $32,000 over 2 years, or spend $20 at your local library over the weekend. Same education value.

    What to do for fun

    Not attend this program.

    Food and Dining

You cook and clean for yourself for ten days during your residency. Imagine how much time could be spend reading and writing in the outdoors. But no. You cook and clean for ten days. Enjoy your non-portfolio of creative writing.

    Dorm Life

    None

    Academic Rigor

    A literal joke.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not even apply to the Low Residency MFA Creative Writing program. It is a total waste of your money, time, and creative energy.

    In three sentences

The Low-Residency MFA Creative Writing program at OSU-Cascades is a great program IF: (1) You have tens of thousands of dollars to waste. (2) You have no interest in ever teaching at the college level. It's hard enough for someone with an MFA degree from a reputable Full-Residency program to get a job. How many Low-Residency MFAs have you heard of teaching college classes? (3) You want to become an awful writer. (4) You enjoy wasting your time in writing workshops with amateurs. (5) You just want to be able to say you have your "MFA" in creative writing. (6) You want to hang out for 20 days a year in a beautiful place with other people and pretend you are doing ground breaking work in the creative field. If by ground breaking you mean doing chores and cooking your own meals...then this might be the place for you to master your craft. (7) You enjoy paying $30,000 for what you could have learned in one weekend of web searches and a week at your local library. (8) The only challenging thing about this program, is convincing yourself you're actually being challenged and learning something.

    Food and Dining

    It's edible.

    Academic Rigor

    We're trying to grow up!

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to spend a little more than 2+2 (4 years). Class offerings aren't always there, so it can be frustrating.

    In three sentences

A school with a long term vision that is still waiting to grow up. Trying to meet the needs of students, but not quite there. We'll be there soon!

    Food and Dining

The food and dining areas are actually part of the Central Oregon Community College buildings.

    Dorm Life

I don't live in dorms, I am not even sure if they have any for the Cascades campus.

    Academic Rigor

    Educating but not overwhelming.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you read and do everything that is required way before the due dates for applying. Talk to your advisor as often as possible to make sure you are taking the right courses and satisfying the most requirements in the shortest amount of time.

    In three sentences

There are no dorms located at this school

    Tips for prospective students

I was enrolled as a full time student, however I dropped a class and ended up being charged an over payment because I dropped to part time, now I owe the school money. Make sure you understand financial aid and student loan requirements before dropping classes. Its much different then going to a community college.

    In three sentences

After finishing my first term this summer at OSU, I am excited for fall term. I feel like the transition to OSU cascades from central Oregon community college has been easy. My adviser and the rest of staff have been friendly and helpful.
