    Campus Safety

There have been a few incidents on campus while I've attended, but there are emergency beacons placed throughout, and you can always find a campus police officer when you need one.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Arboretum is beautiful when you want a little distance from people, just be careful of the smokers. There's also a nice, quiet little courtyard hidden in the art complex with benches and tables that makes an excellent studying zone.

    What to do for fun

There isn't much to do for fun on campus, unless you're into the arts. There's almost always a show going on at the theater, be it music, drama, or dance.

    Food and Dining

They have a Subway and a Jamba Juice, but other than there there's a little salad place that's alright, a grill that has mediocre burgers, and a coffee hut. Eat off campus when you can.

    Dorm Life

    No dorms.

    Academic Rigor

You get a mix. Some teachers and students care more than others, and it really does depend on you; nobody else is going to push you. Pretty typical community college life.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you use ratemyprofessor.com when picking your classes. The heads of the departments are usually a good way to go. Also, consider bringing your own lunch from home.

    In three sentences

Palomar college's classes can be amazing or terrible, depending on the teacher you get (I have had mostly amazing). Their cafeteria is not the best, with limited/expensive choices, although there is a large shopping center just down the street with an excellent variety. The students are friendly enough, and we get all kinds here; diversity is definitely something I see on campus.

    What to do for fun

Honestly it is not fun, I set up all my classes right after one another so I show up go to class then I leave.

    Food and Dining

The food on campus is minimal there is about 3 restaurants. If you drive a minute down the street you get a lot of options though.

    Dorm Life

There is no dorm life on campus.

    Academic Rigor

It is not as hard as I would imagine big expensive universitys but some classes are pretty challenging. It mostly comes down to the teacher and the way they teach and grade the class.

    Tips for prospective students

A community college everyone goes and then leaves. People do not care about meeting one another and it is like an extended high school.

    In three sentences

Palomars campus is pretty nice with new building still being build all around. The parking is horrible I have almost been late to class the last two days. I think they are building a new parking structure which should really help.

It just depends on which class you are taking.

    Tips for prospective students

Research your teachers before getting into their classes!

Their many clubs you can join and be a part of.

    Food and Dining

Palomar college has very good food choices from subway, to java coffee to bending machines and even a pizza place. In the book store you would also find small snacks such as chips, drinks etc.

    Academic Rigor

Teachers are very amazing they will always help you and tutor you or provide a tutor if your in a need of one.

    Tips for prospective students

A very good tip is meet your consolers before you enroll in classes they would help you pick the right classes at the right time so you wouldn't stress.

    In three sentences

Palomar college is an outstanding school, with many classes available to en-roll in. Your consolers provided for you, are very helpful and provide you with all the information you need. Time managing, they always work perfectly around your classes and schedule.

    What to do for fun

Palomar College is full with activities. When I'm heading to my classes, I see a lot of both on the quad. Even though, I'm not involved with any activities, they do offer them.

    Food and Dining

I don't eat at Palomar College, but every time I pass the cafeteria, is full which could mean the food is good. They have a snack bar for students.

    Dorm Life

Unfortunately, in community college there no dorm rooms which means no dorm life.

    Academic Rigor

Professor's set the standards and explain what they expect from you, but it's our job, as students, to rise the expectations.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared for any course, and study for quizzes/exams/test. Don't be afraid to ask any questions during class, teachers love when students ask questions. If you can't attend to class, make sure you email the professor ahead of time and explain why you can't attend class, they might not mark you absent. Don't text in class, professors dislike when students are texting and not paying attention, is rude. STUDY for exams! Professor's like to be fair when it comes to exams, they want you to pass.

    In three sentences

It's a great community college that cares about your education and future plans. Teachers like to interact and be involved with students and like to set up meetings if you are having trouble with the course. Palomar College is great first step on any students education.

Personally, most of my classes have been easy. But that may be because I enjoy the subjects I choose to take

    Tips for prospective students

Don't write this off as another slacker community college. Most teachers and faulty truly care and want to see you succeed and move on to even better things.

If you're serious about your schooling, you'll never run into any of the (very few) questionable looking folks around Palomar. You never hear about any cars getting broken into or drugs being sold. Very respectable community.

    Greek Life

We read Homer in some lit. classes, but that's about it.

    Clubs and Activities

Plenty of clubs for a wide variety of interests.

Great for these types of students

If you're not sure what you're going to major in, if money is an issue, or if you think you're ill prepared for university, Palomar is a great place to deal with these problems.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every third Friday of the month is Get trash'd day. You want to watch your back on these days, or you just may get trash'd!!!

    Bang for the buck

Community college will always save you some dough. My tuition cost was less than my textbooks, and if you wanna save money on those than you can always just shop for texts online. Very affordable experience.

    What to do for fun

Many different extra-curricular groups are available to join at Palomar. From church groups to LGBTQ and gender studies meetings, there are groups for anyone's interests.

    Food and Dining

Delicious food, and at reasonable prices. My only complaint will go towards the lack of vegetarian options they have.

    Academic Rigor

Like at any school, some classes will just be easier than others. Nonetheless, Palomar is no easy ride. One should expect to work hard here.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not underestimate the difficulty of this school. Just because it is a community college does not mean it is going to be easy. This school will prepare you for your later studies.

    In three sentences

Palomar College is a great start towards a prosperous college career. The teachers here are helpful and caring. The classes here helped me prepare for my upper division classes.

    Campus Safety

There have been reports of suspicious men, but I mainly feel safe on campus. There are a lot of security guards patrolling the parking lots and campus, as well as email notifications and posters of any suspicious activity. That being said, you should still always be careful of your surroundings.

    Clubs and Activities

There are stands near the cafeteria area often playing music and giving out free food , showcasing the many clubs including anime, belly dancing, fashion and more. I myself haven't looked much into clubs although I would like to. I heard some clubs like the geology club take trips to places like Yosemite, and it's a great opportunity to meet new people and broaden your interests.

Great for these types of students

I find Palomar to be filled with a lot of groups. There are art people everywhere carrying their big sketchpads, people setting up videos practicing interviews, and i have seen and heard it is a great place for people interested in child development, aviation, or wanting to becoming a firefighter, among other things. Take the time and find out what Palomar has to offer on the website.

    What to do for fun

Palomar has something for everyone: interesting buildings, an Arboretum, open computer labs, a nice library, a gallery, and more. I suggest getting lost once in a while and checking out buildings. One of my favorite places is the art buildings, where this so much to see including the gallery exhibits and students glass blowing. One hall even has random art students will post up. Walking around campus pay attention to the people around you. There could be people skating around dressed as pirates or playing the guitar and chances are there will be someone who will interest you in a strange, intellectual, or friendly way.

    Food and Dining

On campus there is a food shack and lunch area that serves subway, pizza, salads, hamburgers and more. Nearby there is Os American Kitchen (Pat & Oscars), Sprouts, In-N-Out, the Money Pit and more.I personally like getting their pizza sometimes or a subway, but snacks can be over priced, in my opinion. If you really don't like the food they serve it will be no problem finding something else close to campus, there are a lot of food places. It is nice to eat outside near the clock tower on a sunny day, and there are plenty of tables in the inside cafeteria area, but at certain times they can be crowded and you will have to ask someone if you can sit at the same table, which really isn't much of a problem, most people are kind and friendly.

    Dorm Life

I commute from Poway, and I have to leave early to allow time for traffic, mainly on the West 78. Also, parking can be a hassle, especially around 11 and 12.

    Academic Rigor

Classes vary immensely depending on subject and professors. I have had semesters where none of my classes required homework and the tests were easy or reasonable, while in my current semester I have regular class and homework. If you study and pay attention though, even the so called difficult classes will not be impossible to pass. You will usually know at the beginning of the class how much time and effort you will need to put into it, so prepare yourself and find ways to plan school work into your schedule accordingly from the beginning.

    Tips for prospective students

My advice for future students applies to wherever you go and to life in general. Be open, ask questions and say hi to people. I have met some great and interesting people that have changed my perspective on things, including professors and other students, just by starting little conversations. You will be surprised how much it can help your academic goals and your happiness.

    In three sentences

My experience at Palomar Community College has been mostly good, as it is a fun and friendly environment. I've met some inspiring professors and students that take interest in my life and dreams, as well as some interesting individuals walking around campus. One of my favorite thing to do is walk around campus and find little secret places, haven even gotten tours inside buildings and the gallery from enthusiastic staff, which is why i'd rate the college an easy 8 out of 10.

Besides having all the students looking out for each other, San Marcos police department has their own area on campus and are able to respond to any emergency within seconds.

    Clubs and Activities

Every type of club and every type of activity can be found at this school.

Great for these types of students

Great for every type of student. Like surfing? Beach is close by. Want to go snowboarding? Mammoth mountain only a few hours away. Feel like getting some fresh air and quiet? Hike one of the many mountains the area has. Want to party? Your in California, we have it all.

    Bang for the buck

Courses are informative, teachers are great, people are friendly, the food is tasty, and the location is great for not too high of a price.

    What to do for fun

Within five minutes from the campus one can be hiking Palomar Mountain or attending a movie at Edward's cinema, or bowling, or going lazer tagging. Within twenty minutes of the campus one can be doing all beach activities, shopping at the mall, visiting San Diego down town. The things that a person can do here is endless.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria offers many items. If these items do not please the taste of the consumer the school is across the street from multiple restaurants. Food is not an issue at this school.

    Dorm Life

Apartments for rent around campus but not on campus living.

    Academic Rigor

The professors are there to teach the students who want to learn. Put in your all and I guarantee that your knowledge and appreciation will grow for the subject. The professors give reasonable amounts of homework and are always willing to help out whether it be a schedule issue or extra explanations. With the resources given acing classes shouldn't be too difficult at all.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're looking to get the most out of Palomar College go to every class. Just because getting out of bed can be a hard decision every now and then doesn't mean that skipping class is good. By attending every class you will be prepared for the tests the professors administer and the homework will be a breeze. Anyways, class is usually entertaining and you wouldn't want to be left out of the newest class inside joke, would you?

    In three sentences

Palomar college offers an array of courses which is organized by an amazingly, helpful staff. The students have many opportunities through clubs, sports, and the diversity of the student body. Location is great; many things to do within a mile radius.

    No dorm life.

    Academic Rigor

Depends on what classes you take, most of the professors are really good and they teach their course well.

They are building bigger and better facilities and there is a campus police station on both campuses. They have the alert buttons in the parking lots so that if you were feeling like you were followed or in danger they are reachable. Campus police is always doing their rounds and they are also very informative and helpful.

    Greek Life

There is not much of a Greek life at Palomar College

    Clubs and Activities

There are plenty of athletic games to go see and most are free to attend. There are many clubs that people can be part of and they even have events to let people know about.

Great for these types of students

Students that don't have the money to attend a four year institution right away. Great for students that want to stay close to home. It is great for students who are afraid of what college might be like and also for students that are afraid that it might be too tough.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a great softball and baseball program at the college and they have good teamwork and chants and it is very fun to be engaged in that. I am not part of the programs, but find it enjoyable going to these. Also there are two locations for the college, one in San Marcos, CA and one in Escondido, CA.

    Bang for the buck

It is a community college and much cheaper to get your general education and then transfer to finish your degree. The professors I have had really have made my college experience there enjoyable and have pushed me to get ready to transfer. Also, books and supplies are not too expensive and food all around the campus is pretty cheap.

    What to do for fun

Being that it is southern California we get to travel to our seasons. What I mean by this is that we can go to the mountains and see snow in about a 2 hr drive. we can go to the beach in under 20 minutes and enjoy the beach. We can travel to the desert if you would like to go ride motorcycles, ATV's, and camp within 2 hours. There is also San Diego 25 minutes away where you can see the San Diego Padres and San Diego Chargers. Escondido which has a Palomar College extension has plenty of restaurants, an event called Cruisin Grand where they bring out old cars and basically just have an old school like mentality.

    Food and Dining

There is a subway and a few smaller little food stands, but they definitely could have a better selection.

    Dorm Life

There isn't a dorm for students, but there are many affordable apartment complexes all around that support college students.

    Academic Rigor

I think that some of the classes are rigorous and that as long as you are paying attention then you will be set.

    Tips for prospective students

If you can't afford to go to a four year institute like me, this is a great college to attend. I needed to get my general education out of the way and they have teacher's there that really care about student's transferring on to higher education. The campus is adding new additions and they are actually spending money on updating classes. They also have a great athletics program.

    In three sentences

I would rate Palomar College an 8 out of 10. For being a community college I have had some great professors that seem to really enjoy their area of expertise. I also commend them for updating the school.

Great for these types of students

If you are wanting to move to a large city (San Diego) but need a place to help make the adjustment San Marcos, CA (which is in north San Diego county) is a great pick. You are close to the freeways to get downtown but far enough away to have some quiet. This is also a great location for those who are active - hiking, surfing, yoga!

    Bang for the buck

You definitely are getting a quality degree which is transferable to most California public universities. Cheapest education to get in the United States.

    What to do for fun

I utilize the schools gym and library.

There is not much selection regarding food. There is a subway and Jamba Juiceâ?¦that is it.

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms available however several apartment communities are nearby.

    Bang for the buck

If you're looking to save, there's no shame in community college. The campus offers more options than its local opponent Mira Costa.

    What to do for fun

The campus has a planetarium, gym, library, and is located near or close to some sports bars. Don't be afraid of going to the student activities, be adventurous and make new friends.

    Food and Dining

Java City is your best friend, Jamba Juice is next to it for those that don't drink oddly named coffee drinks. The food is across; it's a step above plane food, a step below mall food courts. When in doubt, eat at Subway. Beware of lengthy lines from 11AM - 2PM.

    Academic Rigor

Many of the professors are neurotic, but mean well. No matter what any of them says, wait a week before buying your textbook. Sometimes 99% of the material is online and you'll be wasting time and money if you even bother with the book. Always study, don't underestimate the college just because it's community. Every grade you get matters, and you only get 3 chances to take a course.

    Tips for prospective students

Know who's course you're applying for; an area that you love could be ruined for you with a less than helpful professors. Be adventurous; try courses you wouldn't have taken normally. Even if they don't apply to your major, chances are they might still fall into the IGETC transfer requirements (I recommend trying at least one anthropology class).

    In three sentences

The college offers multiple areas of study that are unique in their own; among these I found that the science departments were the compiled of the best professors. It's unique in also the compilation of students that choose to attend the campus, though you may find that the numerous and crowded campus doesn't last long after the first few weeks of each semester. That being said, the professors are not always the most helpful, most are among the thriving-in-chaos types.

    Clubs and Activities

I gave this 3 stars because I am never at school on the days the clubs meet, for some reason they seem to land mostly on Monday's and Wednesday's. But there are many options to choose from!

Great for these types of students

Great for students who are willing to learn, and have the will to succeed and transfer to a 4-year university.

    What to do for fun

There are many clubs to join and activities going on weekly. Get a student activities card so you can participate in all of these!

    Food and Dining

You'll have variety! A little pricey though.

    Dorm Life

The only reason I gave one star is because this is a community college and there aren't dorms on campus. It is a commuter school.

    Academic Rigor

Yes, it's going to be work, especially depending on your major, but it is doable. Just like any college, you're going to get what you give (grade wise).

    Tips for prospective students

If you are unsure of what you want your major to be, want to save money, or just simply aren't ready to go off to a 4-year university, this is the place to go. Look online at ratemyprofessors.com before registration and take the EAP test! Every semester I've been here I have picked my professors off of that website and have rarely been disappointed. I am positive it is the teachers that have helped me achieve academic success. Also, be sure to buy your parking passes online!

    In three sentences

Palomar is an excellent place for students wishing to save money, for past students wishing to come back to college to earn a degree, or simply just to learn! It offers excellent professors and a quaint campus. Sometimes in the cafeteria/quad area Palomar will have different vendors (shoes, sunglasses, purses, books, etc.) and they are really cool to look through. I've gotten sunglasses and almost a pair of shoes (if I had the money) but they are great vendors to look through!

    What to do for fun

Beaches 20 minutes away, but other than that, people schedule classes so they can go home and not wait 5 hours in between classes.

    Food and Dining

They have a Subway, Pizza place, cafe, snack shack, and other options on where you could get lunch/breakfast! Soo yummy!

    Dorm Life

Home is as free as free can get

    Academic Rigor

Good at keeping the challenge up but not super overwhelming. My high school had tougher rigor than Palomar.

    Tips for prospective students

-Wait until after the first day of class to see whether you really need the books or not. The teachers understand that snail mail can be slow and give you different resources to use until your books arrive. -Check all around online, and at other stores before you buy books at the store on-campus: books at the store could be $200 where used books from amazon could be $12.

    In three sentences

Palomar is a beautiful 2-year community college, every class I've had here has very understanding teachers about our lives (work, high prices of college, etc.). They are very realistic and are passionate to teach about what they got a degree in.

I've never felt unsafe on campus. Apparently there was a groping incident last fall and they made sure every student knew the description of the suspect.

I'm a part of the LGBTQA club and it's awesome!

    Bang for the buck

Just like every other college, the college bookstore is ridiculously expensive. Try to buy your books elsewhere. Otherwise, compared to universities the tuition is a good deal. Still is expensive, though.

    What to do for fun

There are a variety of clubs you can join, but most people don't stick around the school after they're finished with class.

    Campus Safety

The campus police are constantly patrolling the school and are located at one of the school's main entrances, so Palomar is a relatively save school.

Great for these types of students

Palomar is good for high school graduates who are unsure what they want to major in, as well as those who just want to explore various subjects for a fraction of the price they'd pay a uc or csu. It's also great for those seeking vocational training.

    Bang for the buck

This depends on the teachers you choose. Do some research and you'll definitely be happy with your investment.

    What to do for fun

Palomar offers a variety of fitness-related courses and sports programs, as well as a fairly decent gym. They host a variety of clubs and hold organized club events in the quad in which students can explore the different clubs. Concert Hour is every Thursday, in which you can watch a live concert for free and they're always really good.

    Food and Dining

This school could have healthier food choices, but it's not terrible. Their cafeteria is composed of a salad bar, Subway, hamburgers, pizza, and a cafe as well as other miscellaneous food items. They also have snacks in the bookstore and the snack shack, as well as several vending machine throughout the campus.

    Dorm Life

    Non-existent.

    Academic Rigor

This really depends on the teacher you get. Most of the classes I've taken are light on the paperwork and heavy on the readings, and sometimes a few essays. A large portion of your grades will be based on exam scores for most classes.

    Tips for prospective students

DEFINITELY do some research on the teachers offering the courses you're interested before signing up for your classes. Also, make sure you plan out your schedule before you're allowed to register because classes fill up QUICK. If you're not sure what classes to take, visit an academic counselor.

    In three sentences

The teachers aren't winning Nobel Prizes left and right, but there are definitely great teachers here (you just have to look for them). Class sizes aren't too large either. The facilities could be better, but hey, its a community college.

Food and dining at Palomar is fairly decent. They provide a variety of menu options from salads to pizza to sandwiches at a fair price. They also have a Java City stand for coffee, tea, and the like, which is very convenient.

    Dorm Life

Palomar College does not provide any student housing. Therefore, it is not applicable to comment on dorm life. However, it is a commuter school. Thus, very accesible to students in the surrounding area.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor is fairly decent. One will receive the education needed to complete general education requirements, which is what is most important. It is not too rigorous to the point of being overwhelmed, however it provides enough rigor to avoid being completely bored.

    Tips for prospective students

For prospective students, I would recommend having a plan A and a plan B for registering for classes. They tend to fill up very quickly. To avoid being wait-listed, it is crucial to visit a counselor to determine precisely what classes are appropriate for one's intended major and transfer goals. I would also recommend arriving at school early to allot enough time for parking, considering the amount of space is very limited.

    In three sentences

Palomar is an excellent institution for those seeking to complete their general education requirements prior to transferring to a 4-year university. It is the most economical choice, not only because the college offers classes for $46/unit, but also because it offers financial aid as well. There are also plenty of opportunities for help with the transfer process from open workshops to one-on-one time with counselors.

    What to do for fun

The location of Palomar is what I love the most. Since, Palomar is only 15 minutes from Oceanside beach when it starts to get warmer the best thing to do after class is go to the beach. The campus also hosts various days of club rush days where they have music playing and it's a great time for all students.

    Food and Dining

The food at Palomar I feel is very similar to many other schools. There is a Subway on campus and there are many dining options within walking distance of campus.

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms at Palomar becuase it is a community college, so a majority of the students are commuters.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the classes you take and the level of the course depends on the overall rigor of the courses you take. The best part are the professor, who do a tremendous job of helping you in any way that they can.

    Tips for prospective students

Parking is chaotic to find if you start school later than 9am and traffic is a pain when your classes end later than 3:30. Make sure that you pay any fees before you register for classes and pay any additional fees after you have enrolled in classes because that may cause conflicts on your first day of class. If you need any form of financial assistance fill out the BOGW which will cover your entire tuition for the academic year as long as you qualify.

    No dorm life at all.

    Academic Rigor

Now there are some impressive tutoring opportunities to take care of but it's hard to weed out the poor teachers from the good, who wants a trial and error based education experience with the faculty anyway? That makes no sense.

    Tips for prospective students

    Academic Rigor

Some classes were quite challenging, but there were a few that I just breezed through. Its college, you have to study, but you don't want it to be your life. So its the perfect balance.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you check rate my professor. The few not-so-great teachers you DO NOT want to get. Also, you will want a teacher that fits your learning style. If you plan to transfer try to join TRIO, its a great program!!

    In three sentences

Palomar College is a great school when it comes to academics and their staff. Everyone at Palomar is extremely helpful and wants you to exceed. However, there are a few bad professors in the bunch, but that's how it is at every campus.

make sure you're focused on what you want! because palomar is a community college, its easy to get sucked in to just taking classes because its something to do. remember to explore your options and move on to greater things in life now that you have (some) college education.

Great for these types of students

It's good for people who want to get their general ed out of the way because that's basically what everyone else is doing too.

    Tips for prospective students

Bring a lunch. Sounds weird, but the food is so good I've been spending all my money on the pizza. It's so good but after a while it adds up. And get to school early because parking is CRAZY. Sometimes in the afternoons there will be an open spot close, but most the time I've had to park halfway down the big parking lot or further. Remember where you park too because I forget easily.

    Bang for the buck

I'm taking five classes and the total was around $500-600 for 17 units. Its still college but its a lot cheaper than a university. You can rent text books also so it's a little cheaper. There's an off campus bookstore down the street where you can also get books from.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy going to this school because it saves a lot of money rather than going to a university, but I am really anxious to transfer. The students here come to class and go, and unless you're super involved, there's not much to do besides go to class and go home.

    Am learning a lot

Classes are good, just be sure to pay attention and not fall asleep during lectures!
