    Campus Safety

    Completely Safe

    Bang for the buck

Free tutoring, free events as far as movie nights, free hotdog days, free flu shots, etc. They have a gym, free for SCC students to workout and exersice. Other really good discount deals for SCC students on food and games.

    What to do for fun

Get involved and it doesn't matter what it is. A club, sport or volunteer for certain events. At Salem they have basketball games and soccer games which are aways fun to go to.

    Food and Dining

There is a small lodge area and cafe but it's nothing serious, it's community college lol

    Dorm Life

    Commute

    Academic Rigor

Personally, I believe I am getting an excellent education not to sound all commercialized.

    Tips for prospective students

If you do not believe you are ready for a University or college right after high school like I was, don't take a year off; I would highly recommend Community college. It gives you a taste of what college is like and you wont be wasting time. It prepares you, plus it is unbelievably cheap. For freshmen all over the world colleges and universities teach the same exact courses, only you pay more because of the name.

    In three sentences

So far for me it is an excellent school as far as preparation for the next level. My professors, I feel really enjoy their work and that motivates me and keeps me engaged. The campus is safe, small, and kind of boring if you are like me who needs no distractions Salem is for you.

    Tips for prospective students

Take it serious. Treat it like it's a university and not just a step up from high school. You'll learn more, and get more out of your experience.

    Bang for the buck

I think it's worth the amount you're paying. It's a community college so it's not that expensive. You get what you put in.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy being here. The teachers I've had are very caring and offer extra help when needed, especially in the science department. There is no drama and everyone really gets along.

    Am learning a lot

Salem offers a lot of education to the people who are willing to take it. Many students look at Salem like grade 13; however, teachers take students serious if the students are serious about increasing their knowledge.

    Tips for prospective students

I agree with a previous reviewer..you must do a lot of your own footwork here. Many of the staff are completely lackadaisical about helping students and some seem to be very confused and/or misinformed. I once called a number listed in the catalog for a specific department and the woman who answered told me she didn't know how I got that number. Registration and financial aid are both departments that have many problems.

Great for these types of students

SCC is good if you are looking to get a feel for college level material, or if you wish to work on raising your GPA to appeal to 4-year schools. But keep in mind that it is a Community College and therefore does not provide an extensive education.

    Tips for prospective students

SCC is not a difficult school to gain admission to, which is a plus for some. However, for potential students, I would strongly encourage you to get to know at least one or two of your teachers. I've found this to be extremely helpful as I apply to 4-year schools and submit scholarship applications. Also, as mentioned above, treat the courses as college-level work, even if some may seem otherwise.

    Bang for the buck

Salem Community College is worth the money as long as you put effort into it. A lot can be learned, but too many students look at it as an extension of the high school experience rather than approaching it as a college-level education.

    Am enjoying being here

Some of the staff members are extremely helpful and will go to great lengths to assist students. However, many seem to have no clue what is going on, much less any desire to help the students. Something as simple as finding out an instructor's office number can be difficult. Not only that, but some students tend to be disruptive, and teachers are a bit lax to reprimand anyone. If you can focus on your own work and ignore them though, you should be fine.

    Am learning a lot

While most of the teachers are cool, some of the adjunct faculty can be a real challenge to deal with. Overall though, the material covered is in-depth, and professors are readily available for discussing any questions or concerns.
