Founded in 1879, Sam Houston University was the first institution in the Texas State University System classified as a Doctoral Research University by the Carnegie Foundation and is the third-oldest public university in Texas. The university founded the Elite program, which supports minority male freshman who are studying to be the first in their family to receive a degree. SHSU is one of the most “wired” universities in the US and its main campus in Huntsville houses an observatory, planetarium, and an 18-hole golf course. Education, Business, Liberal Arts, and Criminal Justice are the most popular majors at Sam.
