Categories Comments Campus Safety It's an open campus in the middle of Dallas, so it would be a bad idea to walk by yourself after dark. However, the SMUPD are always around, and there's a golf cart system you can call to drive you anywhere you need to go across campus at night. There are also emergency call buttons everywhere.
Greek Life About half do, half don't. It is prevalent on campus, but not at all necessary to make friends.
Great for these types of students Students with diverse interests (like Math and German or Engineering and art) would love SMU.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Bridwell library has moving bookshelves!
What to do for fun People generally go out and explore Dallas when they want to have fun. Mockingbird station is a short walk from campus, so you can take public transportation to see live music in Deep Ellum or go anywhere in Dallas. There are a lot of good places to eat, view art, see movies, etc. in Dallas.
Food and Dining Food is generally fresh and varied, but there aren't many options if you go to the dining halls outside of peak mealtimes.
Dorm Life All the dorms have a mix of upperclassmen and underclassmen, as well as a mix of majors. The dorms feel like home.
Academic Rigor Classes are challenging, but not impossible to manage.
Tips for prospective students Talk to current students. Ask them questions about what it's like to live on campus vs. off, how they like their classes, and what it's like to be a student at SMU in general.
In three sentences SMU has everything: social sciences, dance, engineering, foreign languages, business, theater, pre-med, art, and more. Many students double-major or at least minor even across schools. It's also a good medium size with about 6,500 undergraduates and 5,000 graduates.

Categories Comments In three sentences SMU was so far my favorite campus/tour I have been on! Not only was everything one the campus in pristine condition, but everyone was super nice and willing to answer any questions! Would definitely recommend SMU to anyone that wants a smaller to medium size school but still has awesome sports!

Categories Comments What to do for fun There is so much to do in Dallas, visit Deep Ellum or lower Greenville Ave for fun and unique spots to hang out at.
Food and Dining I have participated in camps on the campus and the dining on campus is amazing better than most universities.
Dorm Life Very clean lots of room and great oppertunites to meet others.
Academic Rigor High expectations for students based on GPA ,SAT and ACT scores
Tips for prospective students Definityly vist the campus because you will fall in love.
In three sentences Southern Methodist University is a beautiful campus with so many opportunities available to students. The campus's proximity to downtown Dallas is great for potential internships. The facilities and buildings are updated and are up to date for the new innovative research that will happen.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Things have happened in the past, but the SMU pd has taken this seriously. There are golf carts to take you where you need to be after 7pm, emergency alarms all around campus that you can trigger in case of emergency, etc. The police are quick to respond, and SMU is located in Highland park, which is a high end area.
Greek Life Most people are involved in Greek life, but it is not the only thing SMU offers.
Clubs and Activities If you want something, chances are, SMU has it.
Great for these types of students I'd say rich, upper-class is the most prevalent, but there are now more and more diverse students joining SMU.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Boulevarding before the game is something you should not miss.
Bang for the buck All the facilities are top-notch. Furthermore, there are several grants and scholarships which serve to make SMU affordable.
What to do for fun Make use of the athletic facilities such as dedman rec, get involved in clubs/ Greek life, visit other parts of Dallas, go to the many parties that happen all year long. Basically, there will be people who share the same interests as you, which makes it very easy to have fun.
Food and Dining There are 2 dining halls and one fast food joint which are part of the meal plan. The food is good, but a bit redundant after a while.
Dorm Life Honestly, a lot of this depends on which dorm you get assigned to, which is completely random. The newest commons are wonderful, but a bit further of a walk (which most students don't mind). The older ones aren't as great, but better located.
Academic Rigor Business and arts students- SMU is the place for you. As a science student, I can confirm that the science program is really great too. You are now responsible for your own education, and professors will expect you to come for office hours/email them if you have any doubts. You are also expected to study on your own, and exams are in no way easy. But what makes academics at SMU so hard (and hence so credible) is the fact that every student is involved in activities other than solely academics.
Tips for prospective students It's very important to talk to your professors and advisors. This is hard to do, especially at the beginning of the semester, but it puts you at an advantage. Work hard to ensure that your gpa is as high as you require it to be, and absolutely get involved in clubs and other activities which will not only look great on your resume, but will ensure that you are connected to like-minded people.
In three sentences SMU has a beautiful campus, friendly students, and helpful professors. It also has a thriving social life, so it's important you stay focused, because it's very easy to slip up. Extra-curricular activities and athletics are also highly valued, as is a gpa above 3.

Categories Comments In three sentences Stepping on campus, I definitely did not feel like I was in the middle of on of the largest cities in America. SMU offers that small campus feel but has all of the opportunities of a larger university. The size and location is just perfect.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students It's a really diverse school, so it's really great for all types of students. However, if you're really into research projects, I would recommend SMU. They have tons of research projects for most areas of study.
In three sentences SMU is such a beautiful and diverse campus. There are so, so many opportunities at this school. There are also various activities and organizations and I feel like it would be absolutely amazing to be able to go there.

Categories Comments Greek Life Greek life is pretty big at SMU. Around fifty percent of students are a part of a fraternity or sorority.
Great for these types of students Republican, conservative, wealthy, business oriented.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Boulevarding, a large tailgating party prior to football games, a is a relatively no tradition. Dallas Hall is the university's main building. Students avoid walking on the university's seal located directly under the rotunda. Myth is that students who tread on the seal do not graduate within four years.
Bang for the buck SMU is a well financed small school so it has smaller class sizes. It is easier to get to know your professors. Despite the fact that the school is small, there are a lot of fantastic opportunities from studying abroad to internships. But the school is very expensive.
What to do for fun ON campus there are many clubs and organizations that fit a variety of different interests, from different groups concerning culture, politics, sport, and multitude of other interests. OFF campus, Dallas is a sizable American city. There are theaters, restaurants, the site of the Kennedy assassination. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area there is the Cowboys Stadium, Six Flags, lakes, cultural centers, etc.
Food and Dining Excellent food and many options.
Dorm Life The school makes an effort to create a strong dorm community.
Academic Rigor Challenges students, but not too demanding.
Tips for prospective students SMU is an expensive school so be careful when considering it. Take advantage of office hours, get to know your professors, and make connections. Have fun, but stay focused on your studies.
In three sentences Southern Methodist University is a small private university in Dallas, Texas. As it's name suggests, the culture at SMU is one that is very southern, polite, conservative in politics, and moderate in culture. Despite the name, there are many students from outside Texas, such as California, Chicago, Connecticut, and China.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have personally never felt unsafe on campus; however, I have known of some people who haven't completely felt safe. However, this is true of any college campus. There are emergency stations all over campus in order to help students be safe. There is also Giddy Up, a service you can call to come pick you up in a little golf cart to take you around campus if you don't feel safe walking.
Greek Life As mentioned previously, Greek life is a big part of the campus. There are a lot of different types of Sororities and Fraternities. Just this semester another Christian sorority: Sigma Phi Lambda!
Clubs and Activities There are lots of fun ways to get involved on campus! There are a ton of different groups to look into. There is truly something for everyone!
Great for these types of students SMU is great for students who actually enjoy learning. The faculty give students many opportunities to learn outside of class.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus SMU has an emblem on the floor of Dallas hall that people say if you walk over it you won't be able to graduate in four years. However, I accidentally walked over the emblem within my first week of being at SMU. Oops!
Bang for the buck Okay, to be fair SMU is really expensive. And though I love it so much, it is really hard to justify charging that much for any university, no matter how amazing it is.
What to do for fun There are many ways to have fun at SMU, it's in the middle of Dallas for goodness sake! There are always fun activities to do around Dallas. For example, freshman year I went to a light and art festival in the Bishop Arts District and it was one of my favorite experiences since coming to SMU. There are also plenty of chances on campus to have a good time. For example, an organization called TREAT holds open mic nights on campus every other Thursday in the student center during the semester. Those are always super fun!
Food and Dining Though, yes, cafeteria food is cafeteria food, SMU really makes an effort to have decent food on campus.
Dorm Life I've loved living on campus!
Academic Rigor As mentioned above, the faculty is really amazing. Thus, even though classes can be challenging, most professors are more than willing to help you out.
Tips for prospective students Don't feel pressured into Greek life if that's not your thing. Yes, Greek life is a major part of campus, and yes there are a lot of fun fraternities and sororities; however, I did not join Greek life and I have made plenty of friends. Their are plenty of ways to get involved on campus!
In three sentences The faculty at SMU are actually care about their students.. The campus is gorgeous. Meadows School of the Arts is fantastic.

Categories Comments Food and Dining SMU food and dining services are the worst experience of SMU. The employees are rude and not knowledgeable. They do not work well with people who have dietary restrictions due to food allergies. I am very unhappy with SMU dining and I think every perspective student should strongly consider their food options before coming to SMU, because they will have nothing to eat on campus.

Categories Comments Academic Rigor It is more rigorous than state schools, however, I was definitely expecting more for the cost. For a school that pushes to inform prospective students on it's increasingly greater selectivity for admissions, I question the need when classes remain so simple. And I am from a public school.
In three sentences SMU has fulfilled all of my preemptive expectations, and also fits the reputation set by many before me. I was expecting the wealth to be extremely apparent, and it absolutely is in both the students and facilities. For those who are able to live this lifestyle on a regular basis, the school is everything you could ever want. I am a student with a much different financial background, and it has been a bit difficult to find people and organizations that I can relate to on a deeper level.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I feel extremely safe at SMU. The streets are all well lit at night and there is a service called Giddy Up, which is a golf cart service that drives students to destinations on campus after dark. There are also many blue poles on campus that connect to police and security at the push of a button. SMU also reports almost all of its safety instances, so it may seem slightly alarming. However many schools cover up some of their crimes, so it if nothing to be worried about.
Greek Life Greek Life is a huge part of SMU. I personally never took part in rush, but I know many people who enjoyed it. I have heard that it is very selective and expensive, though. I was originally worried about feeling left out for not rushing but there are still a large number of people who do not partake in greek life.
Clubs and Activities SMU has tons of clubs, intramural sports teams, and just everyday activities to take part in. There is a club for almost every activity and interest, and if there isn't a club that appeals to you it's extremely easy to start your own.
Great for these types of students SMU is good for all types of students. It is especially strong for business students, but I feel no less important as a biochemistry/premed major. It is not a large school, but it's also large enough to keep things interesting.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Tailgating takes a new image at SMU. 3 hours before each home football game, Boulevarding begins. It's exactly like tailgating, only classier. Girls wear dresses and cowboy boots and guys wear collared shirts, and the whole campus goes out to party. It's fun for the students and many local families come out as well.
Bang for the buck SMU is definitely expensive. There is no doubt about it. However they provide numerous scholarships for academics and athletics, as well as financial aid. Don't be scared to apply due to the cost- the last they can do is not offer you any scholarships, which is highly unlikely.
What to do for fun There are a lot of attractions nearby the school, but many tend to be somewhat expensive. I would recommend getting a DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) pass, which is only $5 and can take you numerous places around the city. Within just a few miles of SMU there is North Park Mall, Mockingbird Station (restaurants, stores, and a movie theater), the start of the Katy Trail (which leads to the American Airlines Center downtown), and much more. There is also a lot to do on campus because so many of the organizations put on events almost every night of the week. Also on the weekends the fraternities and sororities put on parties at clubs/bars downtown that anyone can attend.
Food and Dining SMU has perfected the art of college dining. There are two main dining halls (one at each end of campus), both of which serve their full menus all day. The food changes every day, but they have a number of food items that are available each day. The cafeterias are separated into different stations with their own types of food including pizza, made to order omelets, a custom deli sandwich station, international, southern comfort, and other categories of food. The staff is extremely friendly and there are a variety of seating arrangements from comfortable two person booth to 12 person tables. There is another dining place on campus called Mac's Place which is open late at night and has hamburgers, pizza, and other conveniences which are on the meal plan. There are also a number of restaurants on campus that use flex dollars (which can be purchased at discount rates and put onto your student account) including Subway, Chick Fil A, Pizza Hut, Einstein Bros Bagels, Starbucks, and more.
Dorm Life SMU has recently changed the way its on-campus housing works so that all freshmen and sophomores live on campus. There are a decent number of dorms, all of which are neither too large nor too small. The living quarters here are much more enjoyable than at other universities. Each floor has two lounges and numerous places for studying. There are two RA's on each floor as well and most dorms are being renovated so that every floor is co-ed. Don't be upset if you think you are placed in one of the less nice dorms- each residence hall has its own perks.
Academic Rigor Some of the intro classes can be rather monotonous and easy, but the professors try their hardest to make them interesting. All my professors have a large number of office hours (some as many as 6-8 hours per week) and are extremely accessible if you fall behind in class. The school accepts credit for AP and dual-credit/dual-enrolled courses so it is likely that you will not be stuck in a class below your academic level.
Tips for prospective students Definitely take a tour. I visited numerous other schools (when I was applying for colleges, I applied to almost 20 schools) but I felt the most at home at SMU. The campus is absolutely stunning and is the perfect size for me. If possible, visit on a day on which you can sit in on a lecture. Once you are accepted, attend Mustang Corral. I will admit that it was a very annoying and crappy location (in the middle of nowhere, Texas) but I made a lot of friends there.
In three sentences SMU is a great fit for a wide variety of students. Currently ranked the #58 best college in the nation, SMU has a lot to offer its students from all of its different degree-granting institutions. I was a little weary about attending SMU at first due to its high cost and distance form home, but I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life.

Categories Comments Campus Safety SMU is very focused on safety. There are numerous call boxes located around campus that can be pushed in the event of any emergency. Also, between the hours of 7pm and 3am, a golf cart service will take you anywhere on campus to help protect anyone, especially women walking alone. Campus PD is always on call and safety alerts are given frequently to help keep students safe.
Clubs and Activities There are too many clubs and activities to count. There is an organization for everyone. Clubs are based on religion, ethnicity and/or academic interest.
Great for these types of students SMU is great for students who are focused on school yet enjoy a social life.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Boulevarding is an untraditional form of tailgating. Instead of getting dressed up in crazy spirit gear or body paint, the students dress in nice clothing such as sun dresses or button ups. The students even wear this to the football game.
Bang for the buck The scholarships really make this education worth it. The original price tag is a little alarming but very few people actually pay full price. The education and opportunities received from SMU make it extremely valuable.
What to do for fun Dallas has a booming social life. There is a party every night through some organization. Dallas offers concerts, fairs, shopping, food and fun. Dallas has a phenomenal mix of class and country.
Food and Dining The older dining facility, which has been newly renovated is an excellent place to find any kind of food you are craving. This facility offers numerous choices for every preference. The newer facility specializes in healthy food choices and also has numerous choices. In this newer facility there is usually something to eat, however, the choices are more limited than those of the older facility.
Dorm Life Several brand new dorms have just been opened up close to the gym, stadium and a new dining facility. The dorms more closely resemble a classy hotel than a traditional dorm. The facilities are clean and spacious. Additionally, the commons council and RA's work hard to create frequent bonding and social activities.
Academic Rigor SMU encourages its students to strive for perfection in all that they do. It has high expectations for its students so academics is at the top of the priority list. Classes are not impossible however. The professors do an excellent job covering the material and accommodating special needs of students. The professors are also excellent at making the students aware of their expectations, allowing the students to succeed through hard work.
Tips for prospective students Prospective students should really seek to sell themselves to the school. Include every activity on your application, no matter how small. SMU offers numerous, large scholarships so do not be frightened away by the initial price tag. It is especially important to look at how the individual programs rank as opposed to the entire school. Some programs are far superior to others.
In three sentences Southern Methodist University is a top notch school for students interested in business. The business program is excellent at placing students in internships and jobs. The school offers phenomenal scholarships, numerous extracurricular activities, and very caring professors.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I found that I walk around campus at all hours unafraid. If anything happens like the storm or accidents then I get an email alert right away.
Greek Life Greek Life Rules at SMU.
Clubs and Activities Lots of activities and clubs. I even joined a belly dancing club.
Great for these types of students Art is abundant. Lots of pieces of art to view and research. A great place for any art student. Business school is superior to all!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Love the game day activities.
Bang for the buck My level of learning and opportunities would not have been available at a State College so the extra I pay is worth it.
What to do for fun All of Dallas for fun!
Food and Dining The food is exceptional! All the servers and cooks were more than willing to provide help or hot meals. Lots of choices for vegan meals.
Dorm Life Lots of different dorms and types. I choose the more calmer dorm but I was able to visit the dorms with more excitement whenever I wanted.
Academic Rigor I found all of the classes I have taken, even the summer courses, were academically challenging. If I found the class less than the level I wanted the professor was willing to provide extra work for extra credit or in some cases work that provided a spot light on my abilities.
Tips for prospective students Always see check to see if the professor will let you in the class even if it is full.
In three sentences SMU provides an exceptional learning experience. I am a junior and have yet to have a class taught by anything other than a PHD. Lots of great research opportunities and lots of help.

Categories Comments What to do for fun I spend a lot of time volunteering. There are a lot of awesome organizations that do a lot to help the Dallas community and SMU campus community. Whatever you're interest you should be able to find a organization where you can foster that interest. A lot of the students party, and when they do they party hard. Our campus has an issue with alcohol and drugs, but if you're not that type of person you can find things to do it's just meeting the right people and making the right friends so you guys can do things together. Getting involved is a good way to meet people. There are also a lot of campus events run by student organizations that give students fun things to do. There are also places to go off campus. Places to eat, dance clubs, and the arts district. It's basically what you make of it. If you want to have fun you can have fun, you just have to make it happen and look for things to do because there's a lot to do.
Food and Dining I love the options of einstein bagel, chick fil-A, starbucks, the market, food trucks, and other food opportunities on campus. Cafeteria dining is pretty good at first and then after the first semester of freshman year the food really isn't all that good. I believe umprhey lee isn't as good as it was when I went my freshman year due to new management. The school will now have a new cafeteria and I believe this cafeteria from the way it looks will have a lot to offer. There's also a another mini cafeteria on campus called Mac's place which also is being renovated. i believe these new dining areas will bring SMU's dining up. I will say Umph is probably better than the dining at other schools.
Dorm Life Is fun. You meet a lot of nice people and make friends with people who you may not even have interacted with other wise. They are currently changing the dorm setup and removing community dorms. This means that they are doing more to integrate all students. Instead of having an engineering, fine arts, etc. communities people will be randomly assigned to their dorms. They also have sophmore dorms and they're really nice. From the RA's I've talked to the new dorms are set up basically like a house with a lot of rooms. Lounge area is more like a living room, there's a shared kitchen, and little areas to study. I feel like this change will enhance the student experience but we'll find out this fall (2014)
Academic Rigor I am premed and a psychology major, so my perspective of academic rigor comes from this. I cannot say much about the other departments. In regards to being premed at SMU. there is academic rigor but in a lot of cases the rigor is for the wrong reasons. For intro to bio and chem, and organic chemistry. The rigor is due to the right reasons. Some teachers may be hard but they know the material and really want you to learn. in regards to other classes like physics, genetics, cell bio, biochemistry, and other premed course the rigor may be due to the fact the teacher does not know what he/she is doing, does not care b/c he /she is on tenure, lack of structure, and direction. If you plan on being a biology major I've heard the upper level classes are interesting and rigourous classes for the right reason.I've also heard this for chemistry. Physics on the other hand not so much. A lot of students I've talked to feel that being a premed student probably isn't the best way to go. There are other majors that are really good at SMU dance, human rights, communications, business, political science, and I think engineering.
Tips for prospective students Really explore what area you want to study and try to contact older students who will give you an honest answer. If you can get the contact information of student organization leaders that would be ideal. You can probably google a list of student organizations at smu. I also recommend learning as much information about your prospective area of study at smu and talking to older students (if you visit ask other students). If you do decide to attend SMU APPLY for scholarships. This school is also a party school, so if that's your main reason for attending college you should go here. The school is more so a party school for white students, in regards to minority partying and fun it's limited because this population is very small. Not saying you can't partake in the fun of others, but if you're looking for fun from minority greek life it lacks a strong presence on this campus
In three sentences There are a lot of opportunities for internships and research that provide hands on experience. Education may not be the primary focus of the institution. For the amount of money paid for attending the university, the education received may be very good or sub par depending on your area of study.

Categories Comments Campus Safety SMU is under five police jurisdictions: City of University Park Police Department, the Highland Park DPS, the Dallas Police Department and the Dallas County Sheriff's Department. Most people that go here are well-off financially, so there aren't many theft reports, if any at all. There do tend to be a few (maybe 3 - 5) sexual assault reports per semester, but they seem to be in nearby apartment buildings, not on the actual campus per se.
Greek Life Greek life is not extremely important to participate in, but it is very prevalent on campus. I believe that 1/3 of the undergrad population is a member of a greek organization? No one will judge whether or not you decide to rush, so don't worry too much about it. There are reports of hazing, particularly for the fraternities, so I would be cautious about that. Ask around about it if you're seriously concerned. People more involved in greek life will probably have a better insight than I do.
Clubs and Activities There is a club or activity for anything you could be interested in. There's even a club that puts out bowls of food and water for the infamous stray cat population that we have on campus. Sign up for a few of them, and dwindle them down to maybe one or two as the semester goes on.
Food and Dining The food is very good most days! Never too crowded, and the chefs are very good at what they do. The selection is pretty nice too, with a lot of options for those that are vegetarian/vegan.
Dorm Life The smallest dorm on campus could easily be other colleges' biggest. They are well-maintained and are constantly being upgraded in some way. The dorms aren't too huge, so if you're extroverted enough there's a good probability that you'll get to know everyone at least on your floor, if not in the majority of the building.
Tips for prospective students 1) Visit the campus. 2) Join an oganization. 3) Make homework a priority, even if you didn't have to in high school.
In three sentences SMU is the kind of college you would see as the setting for any college age character in probably every movie you've ever seen. The campus is gorgeous and the people are pretty decent. The location is beond phenomenal; it has a suburban feel while situated in an urban environment.

Categories Comments Campus Safety SMU's crazy safe. Protected by 4 different police departments, and with lots of lighting and lots of safety features (like Giddy Up), SMU is incredibly safe for everyone on campus.
Great for these types of students -The nerds -The artists (all kinds of art) -Most likely to change the world -Most likely to be the next Bill Gates
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Boulevard: the main street on campus where Boulevarding happens - SMU's classed-up version of tailgating. It's a great place to get free food and spend time with friends celebrating Mustang pride! Fountainhopping: There are a lot of fountains on campus - somewhere between 10 and 20 (no one really knows) - and the goal is to jump into all of them in one night (without getting caught). Do it, and you're a legend.
Bang for the buck SMU has quite a hefty price tag, unfortunately, but it goes to pretty good use. All students get the Office Suite, plus accessible professors, meaning they're paid to be there when you need them. The food options aren't bad, and there are nice amenities like Giddy-Up, a golf cart service which provides late night rides across campus for all students, 7 days a week. There's a lot of safety on campus, and a lot of really awesome free events, including all the sports games and campus traditions, plus big-name concerts (most recently, B.o.B.).
What to do for fun Hang out with friends! It's really easy to find people to go country dancing with, or people who are headed to the mall on a Saturday, or people who want to have an all-day movie marathon. Netflix is a good go-to, too, whether you're in a group or alone. Just make sure you take care of your other responsibilities, too!
Food and Dining The food is great! I think everyone worries about campus dining options, but SMU offers a full 8-station buffet-style dining hall along with a late-night grill offering made-to-order burgers and grilled cheeses, pizza, and salads. The newest buildings on campus will provide a third option, a second dining hall, which will be two stories, offer outdoor dining, and have an even larger array of food for the campus. Plus, if it's really late and you're hungry, there are lots of nearby open-late options that deliver, including the most popular SMU option, Jimmy John's.
Dorm Life The oldest residence halls on campus can be pretty sketchy (no cable, old furniture, small rooms), but campus-wide renovations are in the works to ensure that every student has a wonderful place to live. The new residence halls aren't open yet, but they'll be providing lots of fancy new spots to sleep and study, along with some really cool surprises that only incoming students get to experience! The residence halls that aren't brand-new or really old are often really well-kept, with a nice balance and spread of amenities across campus. None of the residence halls are particularly rowdy, although some are much more quiet than others. Any questions, ask a current student. They know very well which residence halls are which.
Academic Rigor SMU provides courses that challenge students, but in the best ways possible: the courses aren't always easy, but the professors are always accessible, and, if there's a TA, they often offer really excellent tutoring. Friends and study groups can help you work out the kinks, and the learning center provides as much help as you may need. Don't take easy classes, take the tough classes: that's what will lead you to learning something of value that you can use for the rest of your life.
Tips for prospective students -Become friends with everyone who works in the cafeterias! -Apply and enroll sooner rather than later! The earlier you're officially affiliated with the campus, the more opportunities you'll have. -Do your homework. There might be a lot of it some days and none of it the next day, but it will help not only for the semester, but for the rest of your life. -Be social! Do not leave without making tons of memories. -TOUR. TOUR, TOUR, TOUR. Touring will make or break your decision, especially if you're from out of state. Tour!
In three sentences SMU offers the ideal balance of everything you'd want in a four-year college: great academics, a beautiful campus, and a place to become a true world-changer. The campus has a family-like atmosphere to it, with expert professors, huge opportunities, and a student body that rivals the nation's top schools. SMU is perfect for anyone who is committed to academics, can enjoy athletics for the sport and not necessarily the win, and seeks lasting friendships with a diverse group of scholarly individuals.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Like any other place, there's bound to be some crime, but SMU has their own police on campus, and anytime something happens, they send e-mails to the students to tell them what happened. There's even these Emergency payphone-type things (you don't have to pay) where you can automatically call the SMU Police if something goes wrong. They take the safety of students pretty seriously here.
Greek Life I'm not too sure about the Greek life here, but they start rushing in the second semester, which personally I think is good. It gives you a chance to get settled into your dorms and college-life before you have to start worrying about rushing and stuff.
Clubs and Activities There's a ton of clubs, so you'll probably find something that interests you, and even if you don't, they have all sorts of activities. They hold concerts by their orchestra/band, and the theater kids perform plays on their own and stuff.
Great for these types of students SMU has pretty high standards, just like a lot of other colleges, so unless you're ready to commit and work your butt off, I wouldn't really apply. College is different from high school, people. You either commit or screw yourself over.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus For every football home-game, people do this thing called Boulevarding. People, SMU students and non-SMU people, set up little stations and stuff and kinda tail-gate or something, and a lot of the school's organizations, the Greek houses included, do the same.
Bang for the buck I'm not entirely sure, to be honest. The school's pretty expensive, and I don't think I've been here long enough to actually decide whether all that money was worth it. I'm glad to be here, don't get me wrong, but I'm still not sure just yet.
What to do for fun There are plenty of school events to go to, especially the sports stuff, and I'm not aware if the school specifically bans parties, so there's that. You can also take the bus off campus for some fun, and they have this taxi-type-service thing where they'll take you back to campus regardless of where you're at, no questions asked. The bus is free and provided by the school, but the taxi-service-thing, I'm not sure about.
Food and Dining It's school food, people. Granted, it's better than the food in high school, but they have to make a lot. Sometimes the food's actually pretty good, and other times, it's so-so. On the plus side, they have Chick-fil-A and Subway on campus as well as a Starbucks.
Dorm Life My dorm was actually pretty nice, and my roommate was cool. I don't know much about the other dorms, but they seem pretty accommodating and well-maintained.
Academic Rigor The classes I've had so far aren't too difficult, but that's because I'm not overdoing it. If this is your first year, don't just jump head-first. Ease into it.
Tips for prospective students As a college student, you can skip class if you want to, but don't take advantage of that. You'll only end up falling behind in class and, at worst, failing. Take advantage of office hours (which are when the professors have the doors to their offices open to talk to students) and really try to get to know your professors. This isn't like high school. You kinda have to get along with your professors. Most importantly, do you homework. It's easy to fall behind, and once you do, you'll have to fight tooth and nail and claw your way back.
In three sentences Surprisingly, the professors all seem genuine in their desire to teach and help students learn. From what I've heard from my fellow students, the campus itself is rather small compared to most schools, but its beauty more than makes up for it. Most of the people I've met, including the teachers and other students, have been nice.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Boulevarding is the amazing tailgating and tenting experience that happens before every home football game at SMU. The greek life at SMU is the main source for parties and such, which usually take at a bar in Dallas.
Food and Dining The food is top notch. They offer everything from made-to-order omelets to vegan and gluten-free cuisine.
Dorm Life RA's do an excellent job of trying to get all of their residents involved in some type of program in their dorm or on campus.
Academic Rigor There are many introductory classes that I would say are fairly easy, with very little studying involved. The upper level classes, however, are very rigorous.
Tips for prospective students It's okay to go out and party once and awhile, but I would advise new students to have a willingness to say no and put the nose to the grindstone. Many stressors in college can easily be avoided if you plan the time necessary for your classes.
In three sentences Campus is very aesthetic with trees everywhere and the facilities are top-notch. Student life is great, although we could use some more attendance at sporting events. Dallas itself has numerous opportunities for career development and economic growth.

What to do for fun There is a lot of clubs and organizations as well as a full gym with rock wall.
Food and Dining Lots of dining options on campus which are all good.
Dorm Life didn't live on campus
Academic Rigor The classes are sometimes hard but you learn a lot and they aren't unfairly rigorous.
Tips for prospective students Be careful with your advisors and make sure you do not take classes you don't need.
In three sentences Excellent school in almost every way. The professors are always happy to help and teach you a lot. And the campus is beautiful

Categories Comments Campus Safety SMU PD is always patrolling, due to a few incidents last year the security on campus has greatly risen.
Greek Life SMU revolves around greek life. Almost 50% of the campus is greek and they are great organizations to be involved in.
Clubs and Activities There are almost to many student organizations on campus and there are always new ones being created. It is great for students to find ways to do what they love in a busy enviroment.
Great for these types of students For people who like to get out and do things SMU is a great place, there are always event going on and there a lot of things to get involved in.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus SMU has a tradition during football season called boulvarding, which is essentially tailgating but on a whole other level. Bands reguraly perform and there is free food everywhere. It is something you have to experience.
Bang for the buck SMU is extremely expensive and with the lavish lifestyle of many of its students there is a lot of money to be spent. However, yoou do get what you pay for the school offers amazing programs that really drive students to succeed.
What to do for fun There are hundreds of clubs to participate in and the University hosts large events on a weekly basis. Greek culture is very large on campus and many people go out to parties once or twice a week.
Food and Dining On campus dining is sub-par but there are a lot of off campus dining options available close by.
Dorm Life Dorm life is an amazing experience, it is where you will most likely find your best friends and meet a ton of people. SMU's dorms are very nice and are mainl;y occupied by freshman. That being said they can get pretty crazy, but overall they are a great experience.
Academic Rigor I am studying Mechanical Engineering and have had many sleepless nights. However, most of the professors are very good and will help you succeed if you try.
Tips for prospective students Do not think College is like High school. There is a lot of freedom and if you abuse it, you could hurt your academic and potentially your professional careers.
In three sentences SMU offers a wide range of excellent academic programs that help prepare students for life after college. Located in the heart of Dallas there are endless job opportunities and connections to be made. Overall SMU was the best choice I ever made in my life and would recommend others do so as well.

Categories Comments Campus Safety First rate.
Greek Life I myself do not plan to participate in Greek Life however SMU does have both sororities and fraternities
Clubs and Activities There are a vast number of organizations on campus to participate in and the first night everyone is back to campus there is the ability to look at all of them and sign up if you are interested.
Great for these types of students Students are focused on academics first and college life second
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The George W. Bush presidential library just opened on campus and you could literally spend days in it.
Bang for the buck Your parents would probably like to know that the campus security is top notch.
What to do for fun There are many opportunities for fun in the Dallas, Texas community. Pretty much anything you want to do is a short distance away from campus.
Food and Dining There are many dining opportunities available on campus as well as the street right off campus. Food selection every day is of a wide variety.
Dorm Life SMU this year has started requiring Freshmen and Sophomores to reside on campus. There are new dorms going up and they are based on community living. Professors and their families actually live in the community residences and each dorm has mentors and upperclassmen.
Academic Rigor Courses are challenging and give you a great opportunity to grow and learn. Professors are available at specific times throughout the week if you need any help or further information. They have a full Learning student center that is staffed with tutors as well as professors for more individual help if needed. Classes are smaller than average college classes which allows for more interactive discussions between other students and professors.
Tips for prospective students If you get accepted to SMU make sure you read all the material that comes to you before school actually starts. Attending AARO which is their registration process is for both families and students and you receive valuable information. Plan to attend Mustang Corral because it gives you a chance to meet a lot of your classmates and have some fun before hitting the books.
In three sentences The overall college atmosphere is that of a family from administrators, professors and other students. It is a very accepting college and not just all stuck up rich people. Dorms have been converted to communities and even have professors living in them. Classes are tough but SMU is worth the challenge.

Categories Comments Campus Safety -Giddy Up is a golf-cart shuttle service offered at night when walking on campus alone of in a small group. -Campus has emergency blue-light phones throughout campus & parking areas. -Campus police patrols are visable & regular
Greek Life IFC Panhellenic Council NPHC Multicultural
Clubs and Activities There is ALMOST something for everyone, but if not, you can start it!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus - We don't tailgate; we Boulevard! - Celebration of Lights during the holiday season. Campus is painted with Christmas lights.
What to do for fun Varies by interest
Food and Dining For cafeteria food, the food is actually pretty good; the cafeteria also offers gluten-free selection. SMU also has a: Subway, Pizza Hut, Chick-a-fila, Einstein Bros. Bagles, and sushi bar. There are PLENTY of eateries walking distance or a short drive away from campus.
Dorm Life I commute, so I cannot advise as to dorm life
Academic Rigor SMU is no cake walk. Students study hard & play hard
Tips for prospective students 1. SMU is entirely TOO expensive for you to be UNDECIDED. Counselors say that's ok, but it's not a smart approach. If you are undecided, go to a community college first. It's SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper, so you can afford to switch interests.
In three sentences For minorities, lower middle class students & transfer students, be prepared for an immediate culture shock, but it is nothing that cannot be overcome. SMU is a mid-sized university, and has GREAT resources for EVERYONE; once you get involved, campus will shrink. Most important....BE PREPARED TO STUDY AND WORK HARD; anything less is unacceptable.

Academic Rigor When you add mechanical engineering and pre-med, it makes for a rigorous and demanding, yet rewarding, academic challenge.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It's hard to walk around campus and not see a cop, I always feel safe walking around campus and there have not been any violent crimes on campus that I have seen or heard of. The cops are always quick to respond to any disturbances as soon as they arise.
Greek Life More than 60% of the students are Greek, the fraternities and sororities on campus are really wealthy and always throw great events and parties.
Clubs and Activities The school is big with Fraternities and Soroities, but there is also every club imaginable to students. If there is something missing than students do not hesitate to start the club right away. We have professional clubs, cultural clubs, social clubs, community service clubs, and religious clubs for any major, race, interest or hobby.
Great for these types of students There are the rich white students that many potray of smu but really all students fit in here and feel right at home with the southern hospitality.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The main seal in Dallas hall, it is said that if you step on it that you will not graduate on time, I have rather not tested that superstition. The caroling during Christmas is always a nice site when they cover the main lawn with lights and President Turner reads stories to all the students.
Bang for the buck Since SMU is a private university it has a nice price tag, 50k+. I personally think its worth it, the campus has such a deep rooted network that many graduates get jobs right away. The campus also brings many well known speakers and has such a rich culture.
What to do for fun Since you are living in a city there is always something to do; such as movies or the mall (which is right down the street). There are frat parties every weekend. On campus events such as free movie screenings guest speakers and many multicultural events. You can always go out to eat at one the nice restaurants near campus and if you are 21 or older the bar scene is really nice.
Food and Dining Umphrey Lee or umphs for short is a buffet style lunch room, the good is great and always has something different each day of the week. Macs place is a take out cafe where you can order your food and take it to go. The food is always good and made on the spot, so it taste fresh.
Dorm Life Living on campus is extremely convenient and you get to meet so many people, and there is always something going on in each community.
Academic Rigor I feel all classes are challenging but not unbearable. I am a computer science major and there has not been a class that I dreaded attending. All the professors are knowledgable about what they teach are really help students when the classes get tough.
Tips for prospective students Many students that attend are really wealthy so expect the parking lot to look like a luxury car dealership. Wait to buy books, most of the time even if they say required the professors do not use them. Be involved on campus, it greatly enhances your college experience and helps you network with students you might not have met.
In three sentences Southern Methodist university is a predominantly white school, being a minority I felt a bit left out at first but once you get going you begin to feel a lot better. There is a great atmosphere and the campus looks amazing. Frat life is big on campus, the classes are smaller so you have a more personal relationship with your professors.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus police are lovely people but they can't be everywhere all the time. Sexual assaults have been an issue but as long as you're aware of your surroundings it's generally a safe campus.
Greek Life Very active on campus, runs the major party scene (but isn't the only way to have fun). It's a good way to meet people and make connections.
Clubs and Activities There's something for everyone to get involved in from acapella groups to a ballroom dance team to volunteering and humanitarian organizations.
Great for these types of students Motivated students who plan to go into some sort of business (not necessarily a business degree) but also know how to have fun.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Boulevarding - SMU's classy version of tailgating
Bang for the buck A lot of people are here with some sort of scholarship. It's a private school (and fairly expensive) but the networking connections and opportunities are priceless.
What to do for fun Join a club, go to a party, go boulevarding (during football season), watch or participate in intramural sports - there's even a dodgeball competition.
Food and Dining There's something for everyone. If you like the dining hall you can become a dessert connoisseur, for burgers there's Mac's place late at night. The campus also has a host of fast food places, a Starbuck's and an Einstein's. If none of those sound good there are a plethora of restaurants nearby.
Dorm Life (From an honors community) Residential life fosters a sense of community. Freshman dorms can get a little rowdy so if you're of the quieter variety an honors dorm is recommended.
Academic Rigor Ask older students about certain professors and classes. Your academic rigor can be as hard (or easy) as you want it to be.
Tips for prospective students Get involved with everything you think you might like at the beginning and then narrow down your activities as the year winds down. It's better to keep your options open.
In three sentences Pastel Polos and personable professors. Great school for networking in business circles and going after your passions.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Large police team on campus. The police department is very good on reporting incidents to students. Residence hall police are friendly.
Greek Life Very large portion of school is Greek. However it is more important for guys to join than girls. Recruitment is in January which allows for potential new members to get to know all sororities and fraternities in the fall semester before rushing in the spring.
Clubs and Activities Plenty of organizations to join and members are extremely welcoming. Almost every type of club is present on campus. Intramural sports are very popular, from beach volleyball to softball.
Great for these types of students Students interested in Greek life, Arts students, students highly involved in high school
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Peruna is the only mascot to have killed another mascot. Boulevarding, or the classy version of tailgating, is SMU's pride and joy in the fall.
Bang for the buck Other than the lackluster dining cafeteria and older residence halls, SMU is a gorgeous college with prestige. Its social life is just as spectacular as the academic excellence. Now home to a presidential library, SMU is the place to be.
What to do for fun Northpark Mall is just ten minutes north and has almost every store your heart could desire. White Rock Lake and Katy Trail provide beautiful walking and running trails. Make sure to take advantage of Boulevarding season. Many students go to Stars hockey games.
Food and Dining Umph as Umphrey Lee is affectionately called is where you'll catch most of your meals. Umph has improved over the years, now offering a sandwich bar and salad bar. Desserts are Umph's main attraction however. Mac's Place, located in McElvaney, is great for late night cravings or when Umph's selection just isn't cutting it. Einstein's Bagel, Subway, Chickfila are also alternate options. However, the best food is off-campus, right on Hillcrest and in Snider Plaza.
Dorm Life All-freshman dorms may seem like a nightmare waiting to happen, but they help incoming students meet many of their peers so that they can develop friendships. It's a hard transition from living at home like in high school but it is fun.
Academic Rigor Classes aren't easy, but their lessons are worth the work they require. As long as you stay motivated, you will do fine academically at SMU. It's best to develop relationships with professors and TA's to get the most out of your classes. The GPA scale is another reason to try your hardest.
Tips for prospective students Get involved immediately and don't be afraid to join an organization you know no one in yet. Take advantage of all the class help the ALEC and teachers offer. Live in an all freshman dorm in order to meet as many peers as possible because it will make finding your niche easier.
In three sentences SMU is a small university in a big city. The beautiful campus is a welcoming place for students who want to get involved and meet people from around the country and world. SMU offers endless ways to get involved and Dallas is the perfect city for success post graduation.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Pretty safe and constantly getting safer.
Greek Life It feels like Greek Life is a huge part of the campus when in reality only a minority of students are actually associated.
Great for these types of students Social, Studious, Proactive
Bang for the buck Sometimes it feels like it wont be worth it, but if you look at the alumni network you will be a part of after graduation, the tuition is almost worth that alone.
What to do for fun I don't think I could adequately describe all of the activities. The campus itself is almost constantly holding events for students and the Dallas area in general is stuffed with things to do for all kinds of people.
Food and Dining Mac's Place and Umph are okay, but I get sick of them very quickly. Luckily there are plenty of other options in the area.
Dorm Life I personally didn't live in the dorms, but most people I have talked to about it have had negative experiences mainly as a result of some of the more rowdy students.
Academic Rigor Deceptively rigorous, even at the freshman level. Classes will require significant commitment outside of class to succeed.
Tips for prospective students Keep up with homework and textbook reading and you will be fine. Don't forget about the learning center if you need help.
In three sentences Very friendly staff with a wide variety of well rounded professors. It's worth the cost of tuition but keep in mind that you will have to work for it. There are classes for practically any subject you can think of.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus Safety is very present on campus. They are always looking out for the safety of their students. They have been known to be pretty tough on alcohol violations.
Greek Life Greek life is amazing at SMU. The sororities and fraternities not only have events to benefit their philanthropies but they contribute to the universities nightlife.
Clubs and Activities Clubs and other activities are so easy to get involved in on campus. There is always something going on or a club to join.
Great for these types of students Students who are serious about their studies but still want a traditional college experience.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The best tradition is the Ceremony of the Lights. Before holiday break all the trees lining the main quad are covered in lights and lit up. Hundreds of people come to sing carols and celebrate the end of first semester.
Bang for the buck It is pretty pricey here in Dallas. But depending on how well you budget it is manageable.
What to do for fun Dallas and the surrounding areas have so much to offer. There are great restaurants, bars, and clubs downtown as well as close to campus.
Food and Dining The food on campus is not too great. Umph is the main cafeteria and has some good days and some bad. Mac's Place located in McElvaney Hall is great. They have good healthy options and a mini-mart to grab small things you need.
Dorm Life Dorms are fun! Currently mostly only freshman live on campus and the two most social dorms are Boaz and McElvaney. They are a good way to get to know people.
Academic Rigor The classes push you to your limit but they are definitely doable. The professors are great and help you with any question that you have.
Tips for prospective students Come and visit campus!! You will feel right at home and get a real feel for the university. Also do your research. Look up programs and classes to make sure everything you want academically is offered.
In three sentences Southern Methodist University is one of the best things to ever happen to me! The close-knit campus feel, challenging academics, encouraging professors, and great social life make this university a unique and amazing experience!

Categories Comments Greek Life Is really HUGE on campus. When spring semester comes for freshman, about 50% of them rush. Stuff has to work with and around the Greek organizations. For example, Thursday and Friday might not be the best days to host an event.
Clubs and Activities There is a great variety of clubs and activities, and if they don't have a particular one you're looking for then start it. The Clubs are there in response to the student demand.
Great for these types of students Those who are looking to network.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus You can NOT step on the seal in Dallas Hall, the main building, or else you either won't graduate or won't graduate on time. Also, for the first football game wear white. Football games are dressy affair (and girls, invest in a good pair of cowboy boots).
What to do for fun There is usually some event on campus. Dignitaries and even celebritites such as Will Farrel come to speak. Also the nightlife is quite fun.
Food and Dining Despite what people say, Umphs is not THAT bad. The thing is that you might get sick of eating food prepared by the same people everyday. We're in Dallas, there's plenty of food places to explore.
Dorm Life Dorm life was.....interesting. I prefered a more calm atmosphere versus a more wild dorm. Even then, I had to deal with suitemates and let's say colorful neighbors. I miss it. Commuter life sucks.
Academic Rigor Academic rigor really depends on the classes you take. The first level religions courses aren't that bad, but some of the politic classes are harsh. Go talk to your teacher and make sure they know your face (positively), this can really help when you struggle.
Tips for prospective students Get involved, there is much this campus has to offer from clubs to internship opportunities. Go to the gym, you paid for it so stay healthy. Reach out, don't shy away from the helping hands but seek them.
In three sentences There are amazing opportunities for those that are looking. SMU is a home a way from home, and my portal to trying to make a difference. Students are doing amazing things, but have fun at the same time.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus This university values the Greek traditions, so if you're into sororities or frats well you've come to right place/
Bang for the buck The amount of money you pay for this private university is worth it. There is so much prestige from graduating from SMU that you are almost certainly guaranteed a job after you graduate. You just need to take advantage of the resources it has to offer.
What to do for fun SMU is centered on Mockingbird and is surrounded by the glamorous life of Dallas! There is delicious dining, art museums, malls, and quirky unique places for all types of lifestyles.
Food and Dining The food is amazing...that's why you gain the Freshman 15! But don't worry we have a great gym to work it off
Dorm Life SMU does everything possible to make students feel at home, and trust me you will feel like you're living at a 5-star hotel.
Academic Rigor Great environment that challenges you everyday!
Tips for prospective students Keep your grades high, do community service, and work on that college essay! You need to get those scholarships to attend this school because the 40,000 dollar semester is not cheap.
In three sentences Apart from the beauty and class SMU offers it is also academically rigorous. With small classes and great professors who are willing to help you outside of class you have a great opportunity to learn and exceed your own expectations. The resources are immense and you will gain so much from this private institution.

Categories Comments Food and Dining The food on campus is alright. Mac's Place is very convenient for late nights because it is open until midnight most weekdays. Umph isn't too bad...sometimes.
Dorm Life Dorm life is fun. They are kinda strict on drinking, but it kinda depends on your RA.
Academic Rigor SMU isn't hard your freshman year. But don't slack off because you can get left behind quickly.
Tips for prospective students Get involved... in something. Make some friends, have fun, but remember this is still school.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Cops everywhere constantly eyeballing for suspicious activities. It is very safe.
Greek Life Fraternity is very good!!! Sometimes hard sometimes very fun!!!
Clubs and Activities Somewhat limited actually because most of the big ones are limited to certain parties and groups.
Great for these types of students Parties every night is not a joke. It is either that or quiet and private single study life.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus A very special event at campus when football game is held at night. Free food and drinks (alcoholic) where everyone can have fun
Bang for the buck Very high quality education if you have scholarships!!! I very much feel that it is not the school that you want to go and waste all that money just for undergraduate degree certificate. Connections are must to build!!!
What to do for fun Running club and fitness center is the most fun places to go. Again, the parties are really fun and huge too!!! (depending on who holds it) intramural sport teams are really good for sporties especially indoor soccer!!!
Food and Dining It is really great. Dining in meal plans is very expensive but very high quality. You will be sick of it by the end of your first semester. However, there are many cheap restaurants around the school that you can drive to which is really great.
Dorm Life Party literally every night. You will be sick of it by the end of your first semester there.
Academic Rigor Very private connections and high level of lecturers and professors.
Tips for prospective students Be active with student clubs such as fraternity and seminars of well known people. Scholarships are must since the tuition is way too expensive!!!
In three sentences Southern Methodist University is a prestigious school that has high level of education and very private connections for your future career. As with accounting, the school itself provides private recruitment process which is really beneficial if you make the most of it.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus is really safe. There are about four police departments around SMU, including SMU police. SMU has a safe-ride program with Cowboy Cabs and a Giddy-Up Program for getting around campus at night. Also, there are blue lights all over campus.
Greek Life Greek life is huge on campus. About 2/3rds to half of students are involved and they put on events all year long.
Clubs and Activities There are clubs available for any type of group you were looking to join.
Great for these types of students Students who want to be involved in their school community. Also, the business school is great, so I'd recommend it if you're looking to go into business.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Instead of regular tailgating, we have Boulevarding. Setup for each Boulevard takes the whole week before each game. There are tents, food, music and a lot more.
Bang for the buck SMU can be expensive, but the education and opportunities are worth it. They have a very well-connected set of alumni that can help with job hunts. Also, they offer many scholarships opportunities.
What to do for fun The fraternities throw a lot of amazing parties. The sororities have really fun charity benefits. And because you're right outside of Dallas there is plenty to do.
Food and Dining Food at Umph is really good and Mac's place is really convenient. Also, the food in Dallas is amazing and a lot of places offer discounts for SMU students.
Dorm Life There are a wide range of dorms(all incredibly nice) from community to suite-style to apartments or condos.
Academic Rigor The academics at SMU are difficult but the professors are great and helpful. And the ALEC is an amazing tutoring center.
Tips for prospective students Get ivolved! SMU has plenty of opportunities to get involved. Join the Greek community. Make sure to take advantage of the internship opportunities.
In three sentences SMU is a great school if you're looking for a well-rounded college experience. The scholarship, internship, and study-broad opportunities are incredible. It is a great place if you want to be involved. The spirit is incredible.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Police are patrolling 24/7, there are blue light stations where if you press the button, police will be dispatched within a minute. SMU really cares about the safety of all its students (to the point of being excused from a underage drinking violation if you seek help for yourself or a REALLY wasted friend in hopes of getting more people to report alcohol poisoning without the worry of legal action) and there is also Giddy Up, which are golf carts that run around campus 7pm to 3am that can give you a ride to campus buildings. And there are an array of different programs that make sure students get around the city and campus safely - usually for free! - that you'll have no problem feeling cared for. Now I'm not going to lie and say that nothing bad ever happens, but SMU does take every incident as top priority and notifies all students in order to ensure everyone is aware of everything going on around campus.
Greek Life REALLY big here, a big percentage of the school is in some sort of frat/sorority, but it isn't that isolating if you aren't. Good thing is that if you are unsure that Greek life is for you, SMU doesn't rush until the beginning of the spring semester and it is pretty much guaranteed you'll get a bid, which is really convenient for the indecisive mustang.
Clubs and Activities There are over 100 clubs and organizations, and Greek life is big here. If you are still not sure about what you want to join (or are just curious) go to Night at the Club. I found so many cool and interesting organizations there (and a lot of cool free stuff, like a goldfish and nice sunglasses!) that it'll be impossible for you to say there is nothing here that you can join.
Great for these types of students Although the stereotype of rich, white kids does hold some validity, they are not the rude uncaring type. I come from a very low income family ($0-$19,999) and I have been able to find friends (rich or not) relatively quickly, as it seems that everyone here is looking to meet new people!! I am Hispanic, and I have found a home at SMU. There is literally a place for everyone. Trust me.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Can't really think of any...I mean there are organizations on campus that hosts annual events, but something school-sponsored and observed by everyone, I draw a blank. Besides football, THAT is a big thing here...and boulevarding, which is just tailgating, but better.
Bang for the buck For full tuition, I am not going to lie, it is expensive, but they do offer a lot of scholarships and financial aid, so it isn't overbearing. SMU paid for about 85% of my total costs through financial aid and scholarships and I filled the rest with outside scholarships, government loans, and out of pocket (which has only like 5% of the total cost) expenses. But even with high tuition, almost all the things offered by SMU are free. You get unlimited access to the Gym (which is a beautiful state-of-the-art facility, unlimited use of the A-LEC (SO helpful), and pretty much after you pay tuition and get onto campus, you rarely have to pay for anything, not even football games! (at least in my case, I'm not that high maintenance and try to live simply, but you know, if you do require more things to be comfortable, that's cool too, it'll just require more money)
What to do for fun Get a DART transit pass (only $5 for all 4 years!!). Mockingbird station is only a SMU bus drive away, which will get you ANYWHERE you want in the DFW area (even to some of the suburbs, as the Green Line railway gets you all the way to Carrollton). I've lived in Dallas all of my life and I can promise you that there is something here to do for everyone. All you have to do is google your interests and you'll find something to do (every third Friday of each month, the Nasher Sculpture Center hosts Midnight at the Nasher which is a free event from 6pm to Midnight and you listen to live music and then watch a movie!!)
Food and Dining The food is good, but it'll never replace home cooking. There are sooo many options that you really can't get bored (even a vegan line for lunch and dinner!). You could also go to Mac's Place, which is kind of like fast food (pizzas, sandwiches, boxed salads; good for the person on the go and in need of food before their class that starts in 15 minutes...) And literally surrounding the campus there are so many restaurants (and Jimmy John delivers to your dorm!!) that if you feel you have run out of dining options, you're just being a really picky eater....
Dorm Life If you are a party person, Boaz and McElvaney Hall are were you'd be happiest. If you are more studious (but still social), Smith and Perkins are good (only, you have to be in the Hilltop Scholars program for that). And if you prefer a more studious and quiet environment with minimal human interaction, Moore is cool (even brings its own kitchen and bathroom! But REALLY far from a lot of the classes and campus buildings). You choose, they are all amazing dorm halls and are really spacious (except maybe for Boaz...but Moore is HUGE). I really would invest in looking up each dorm and figuring out which one is best for you, but you don't really have to worry about the typical ugly, gross dorm in any of them (although I have heard Shuttles is the prettiest and nicest...but also the most expensive).
Academic Rigor I've only been here for about 2 weeks, but I have to say it really isn't THAT difficult, it is just a lot (I'm also a psych major, so there is a lot of reading...but I'm hearing the same from math and science majors as well). If you studied in high school (and I mean STUDIED, you'll be fine. If you have never opened a textbook, it'll get some getting use to, but it won't be impossible).
Tips for prospective students Keep decent grades (I was an A/B student with 3 Cs; averaged high school in the top 16% and a 3.49 unweighted GPA, 4.4 weighted) and do extracurriculars! I didn't visit the campus beforehand, but you might want to just to check out if you think it is a good fit (which it will be, because there is a place for everyone here!). Also if it is a reach school for you, try to come for an interview!
In three sentences It's a good school, people are REALLY nice, the campus is like something straight out of a magazine and even though tuition is high you do get your money's worth.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The safety on campus is really good! There is SMU police, Highland Pak police, and then Dallas police.
Greek Life You don't have to be in a sorority or fraternity but its so much more fun if you are because you meet so many people!
Clubs and Activities Intramural's, the athletic program, greek life
Great for these types of students If you love helping out and volunteering then join a frat or sorority!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus SMU does not tailgate, we BOULEVARD!
What to do for fun There is so much to do since SMU is located in the middle of Dallas. You can go shopping in Uptown or in the Northpark Mall. There are amazing restaurants to check out all around the SMU campus.
Food and Dining Umph is really good for cafeteria food but kind of gets old after the first semester! Macs place is great for late night snacking. Lastly, Hughes Trigg is really good and has Subway, Chick Fil A, and Pizza Hut!
Dorm Life Dorm life is amazing! Boaz and Mcelvaney are the top dorms on campus for the biggest social life. Shuttles is by far the nicest but much quieter.
Academic Rigor Great academic school for Business and Engineering students. The professors are great with one on one time!
Tips for prospective students Go to corral so you can meet other freshman. Join an organization and get involved.
In three sentences Southern Methodist University is a great academic school! The business and engineering school is great and the professors are always there for help. The campus is beautiful, one of the prettiest schools I've ever seen.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck SMU is an elite private school; 56K per year, at the last estimate. Sure you get a good education, just at 5 times the rate of other institutions.
What to do for fun Party! The frats host bus parties almost every night during Fall semester, so you'll literally never run out of things to do.
Food and Dining Umphrey is fantastic on the days that prospective students come in, but pretty much sucks every other day of the year. Mac's Place is a little better, but your best bet are the restaurants in Snider Plaza
Dorm Life Depending on which dorm you choose to live in, you can either have the time of your life or the worst experience ever. Choose wisely! (Hint: Boaz or MacElvaney!)
Academic Rigor The classes themselves are challenging, but the fact that they hardly change from one year to the next means that you can just make friends with upperclassmen and pass with flying colors.
Tips for prospective students Work your butt off your Junior/Senior year of high school! Sure, you might miss out on a few parties, but SMU has TONS of scholarships for kids who achieve higher than the average Joe.
In three sentences SMU is an awesome place for people with outgoing personalities; the party options are endless! Classes are no joke so you'll have to balance both, but the key to success here is knowing the people who have all of last year's test/homework answers (they almost never change). In short, a fun party school that knows how to play hard and work hard.

Categories Comments Campus Safety A small campus means there isn't much room for crime. In addition, the area is generally safe and SMU Police are always on the lookout on and around campus.
Greek Life There is something for almost everyone. I wasn't expecting to join a fraternity when I came to college, but I found a family with Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc. It is the largest Latino-based fraternity and spans from Coast to Coast and even includes a chapter in Puerto Rico. Beyond my fraternity, there are also professional fraternities, e.g. Theta Tau for engineers as well as many other social fraternities and sororities.
Clubs and Activities Every year kicks off with Night at the Club, an event in which all of the on-campus clubs pack into the basketball arena and try to recruit new members for the upcoming year.
Great for these types of students Students who like smaller classes and don't mind seeing the same people every day
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Boulevarding is like tailgating except waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better. Make it a point to go every Saturday before we have a home game.
Bang for the buck SMU comes with a hefty price tag (thank God for scholarships and financial aid) but with it comes prestige and recognition. The business school is nationally ranked and virtually all students are provided with the opportunities to succeed after college. Just don't take out too many loans.
What to do for fun EVERYTHING. Whether you're hanging out in a friend's room, studying in the library, you're never short on fun activities on campus.
Food and Dining As much as we complain about it on campus, the options available are top of the line for a university. I had a friend of mine visit and he loved the food there, stating that it was much better than the options at his school.
Dorm Life Unfortunately, I stayed in Moore Hall my freshman year. Not a bad dorm, but as for meeting people it's not all that good. Some of my better times were spent at my friends' rooms hanging out with their suite-mates.
Academic Rigor Making the change from high school to college can be tough for some, but succeeding at SMU is more than do-able.
Tips for prospective students Have fun your freshman year, but always keep your eyes on the prize. You came to college to get a degree, so go on and get it!
In three sentences Southern Methodist is a high-level institution for higher learning. There is always something to do on campus, whether it is a social activity or another opportunity to expand on your knowledge. The classes and degrees offered range from fine arts to finance.

Dorm Life The dorm residents are very friendly, however some of the dorm rooms are extremely small just like most colleges.
Academic Rigor The engineering courses are extremely hands-on which allows the students to learn by doing the activities first hand.

Categories Comments Campus Safety SMU has its own police force that patrols day and night. Kiosks stand in various places on campus, which can be used to summon the police to that particular location in case of an emergency. Policies regarding drugs, rape, and alcohol are strongly enforced.
Greek Life Sororities and fraternities have the option of participating in an annual stepping competition. They create their own routines, practice choreography, and perform for a pumped crowd on stage.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus SMU is known for Boulevarding-- a community cook-out/celebration-- before a big game. People pitch tents around Bishop Boulevard, and fans come out to share food, stories, or just party.
What to do for fun SMU students can choose to join a club, sorority, sports team, committee, or volunteer organization. There are hundreds of activities available around campus. If you can't find anything that suits your interests, you can create your own group!
Food and Dining Cafeteria food is tasty, offering numerous selections. Small businesses located near campus such as Roly Poly, Starbucks, and La Madeline, are great alternatives if cafeteria food every day becomes mundane.
Dorm Life Resident Assistants are extremely friendly and approachable. Mini events within the dorm happen often and are a great way to meet new people.
Academic Rigor Classes are challenging, but they are rewarding. If you engage in the class, you will learn much about the topic at hand.
Tips for prospective students Apply as early as possible; the sooner the better. If applying, make essays structured, while remembering to include personal connections to the questions being presented. Become familiar with the campus and organizations to make transition into campus life easier.
In three sentences The campus is gorgeous; it combines modern architecture with simple designs. Students are very friendly and eager to enrich the college experience with various clubs, committees, and organizations. Courses are extremely flexible, offering introductions to more than one specialization or degree.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I feel very safe walking around campus. Police officers are constantly patroling SMU (especially at night and on the weekends) to make sure everyone is safe and sound. If that doesn't give you enough peace of mind, large poles with emergency buttons are located on almost every block. SMU also has a transportation system around campus called Giddy Up; just call and someone in a golf cart will pick you up and take you anywhere on campus between the hours of 7pm and 2am.
Greek Life Greek life is huge at SMU. It's wonderful, but I have to say I wish recruitment was in the fall instead of spring. I joined a sorority the spring of my freshman year and it has been the best decision I have ever made. There honestly is a perfect sorority or fraternity for everyone!
Clubs and Activities Really the clubs and activities at SMU are endless. If you can't find a club or organization that fits your interests, start a new one! SMU holds the annual Night at the Club event a few days before classes start in August, and the event helps new students discover all of the clubs on campus.
Great for these types of students Students really looking to get involved in Greek life would be right at home. Also, students wanting to major in business would love the Cox School of Business at SMU; the business school not only has fantastic professors, but also great job opportunities and connections around Dallas. People also wanting to live in a big city (but not too big) would love SMU!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus When I was an incoming freshman at orientation, I was told never to step on the gold seal located in the middle of Dallas Hall; rumor has it that if you do, you won't graduate! Also, SMU boulevards instead of tailgates. Tents are lined up on the boulevard (the street running through the middle of campus) a few days before game day, and it's a lot of fun to just walk around and socialize with everyone on game day! Boulevarding really brings the entire SMU community together.
Bang for the buck It's no secret, SMU costs a lot of money. However, SMU does give out a generous amount of financial aid and scholarships. And even though SMU might cost more than some universities, the education you will receive really is priceless. The professors are so great and the connections SMU has around Dallas helps students become employed after graduating. I feel that the money is definitely worth it.
What to do for fun SMU is located in Dallas, Texas, so being bored is really not an option. Mockingbird Station is a really fun place to shop; it has great food and many clothing stores and is within walking distance to SMU. The restaurants in Dallas are also amazing, and the night clubs are as well. If you feel like taking it easy, the Dallas Aquarium is actually also a fun place to visit on a Saturday afternoon!
Food and Dining There are plenty of restaurant options on campus. My favorite is Mac's Place (the dining hall located in a residence hall). Mac's place is open until midnight, which is great for late-night study snacks, and it is included in your unlimited meal plan! Also, SMU is located in North Dallas, so the restaurant options off campus are unlimited.
Dorm Life I love that SMU requires freshmen to live on campus. Leaving home and going away to college can be scary and little intimidating, but living in residence halls with other freshmen and sometimes upperclassmen make the transition so much easier. Most of our dorms on campus are nice, and they come with a microwave on each floor as well as washing machines and dryers.
Academic Rigor SMU is definitely challenging but not unbearable. Most professors are always available to help and genuinely want to see their students succeed.
Tips for prospective students If I was given the opportunity to complete my freshman year all over again, I would have tried to meet more people in my dorm as well as upperclassmen. Don't be afraid to introduce yourself to someone in a class; you never know where you'll find a new friendship.
In three sentences Southern Methodist University really is a great school. Not only is SMU a great place to learn and receive an outstanding education, but also the place to become a well rounded person. The campus is gorgeous, and the people really are what make the school so wonderful.

Categories Comments Food and Dining At SMU there is no shortage of food options to choose from. The two dining halls on campus are Umphrey Lee and Mac's Place. There are also places to get food in the Hughes Trig Student Center. If students wish to eat off campus there are places near by that offer a variety of different foods.
Dorm Life The dorm life at SMU allows students to be social yet it's also good for studying purposes. The dorms are always clean and the RAs are extremely nice and responsible. The majority of the students that live in the dorms are freshmen however there are some sophomores that do as well. All the dorms are located close to all the major buildings on campus so getting to class is easy.
Academic Rigor SMU sets their students to the highest academic standards. Studying is important and so is attending classes. Most professors at SMU take attendance, and if not they might give out a quiz each day. The professors are interested in the students and want the students to excel. The classes offered are designed to challenge the students, and the small classroom atmosphere is great. The students can really connect with their professors and are able to get more attention during class than they would in a larger class setting at a different university.
Tips for prospective students Get involved on campus! Whether it be through student organizations or intramurals, SMU has so many opportunities for students to meet new people. By getting involved, you not only can make new friends but also become interested in topics that you never thought you would be interested in before.
In three sentences SMU is the ultimate university. The professors are extremely bright and supportive, as well as the students that attend the university. It's hard not to fall in love with the beautiful campus, the great curriculum, and the abundance of opportunities available at SMU.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is very important to the campus' faculty and they assure that everyone is safe and comfortable. Giddy-Up rides from 7 pm to 3 am daily and is easy to catch with an accessible phone number that can pick a student up and drop them off from anywhere on campus. Also, the campus has blue lights in eye-sight from any spot on campus which ensures safety at any time for a student when walking alone or small groups.
Greek Life Greek life is popular on campus, but definitely is not overwhelming to the student body. Many of the organizations plan events that everyone can participate in, so it allows for all students to be connected.
Clubs and Activities There is an endless list of clubs to join, which people sign up for at Night At The Club, and anyone is welcome and it allows students to connect to people with similar interests. Also there are a lot of activities such as intramural sports, outdoor adventures, the Dedman recreational center, and the tanning pool events with sand volleyball courts on the side.
Great for these types of students This school offers a diverse student population and is great for students who understand a balance between student leadership and school work, along with extracurricular activities of choice.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The school loves to boulevard which is basically tailgating before every home football game. The school also sings the varsity song with the football team every game which really unites the student section. Also, there is the celebration of lights, convocation, and then Peruna is the mascot. PONY UP!
Bang for the buck This school is definitely everything you would want in a college. The tuition is demanding but the school offers ways to handle the payments.
What to do for fun There are a lot of museums and exhibits downtown to visit on the weekends and SMU has so many clubs to get involved with, which each holds functions that everyone can attend.
Food and Dining Dining hall and Macs place have a lot of different options and you can survive off of the meal plan because they always have something new.
Dorm Life Dorms are small, but it is a great chance to meet people and teaches you how to live on your own and with another person.
Academic Rigor Professors expect a lot from their students but the class sizes are small so there is plenty of one on one attention with each student.
Tips for prospective students Be ready to study because classes are challenging but there are so many events and activities that the school offers that it is enjoyable and fun as well.
In three sentences The school is very clean and well organized. The class size and professors offer great opportunities for students to succeed. People are friendly and faculty always provides what the student needs.

Bang for the buck very expensive
What to do for fun Parties, sports, dancing. If it can't be found on campus Dallas is right there.
Food and Dining Very good for cafeteria food. Great diversity of restaurants within one block
Dorm Life Your typical dorm stuff
Academic Rigor No Ivy League but not DeVry either. A few blow off classes but most are challenging.
Tips for prospective students School is very Greek oriented so beware if that's not your thing (like me). A lot of opportunities in Dallas. Remember, it's who you know not what you know.
In three sentences SMU is an up and coming southern school with plenty of money and ambition. Student body is very southern and Greek focused. Academics on the rise with talented professors and ever more rigorous classes around campus.

Bang for the buck SMU is expensive. There's no way around it. But, once you go there, you'll never want to leave.
What to do for fun Everything. There are those that party and drink. There are those that watch Disney movies on the weekend. There are movie theaters and shopping malls all in close proximity to SMU. I've played Whirlie ball for the first time in my life, I've tanned at the rec center's tanning pool, laid out on the quad in the grass, participated in intramurals, explored the Dart and downtown Dallas, spent the day on White Rock lake, rock climbed at the rec center and many many more things I can't even remember.
Food and Dining UMPH. Oh Umphrey Lee. That is our cafeteria. When you first arrive at SMU, the food at Umph will seem like ambrosia. So much to choose from, such good food, and such a spectacular dessert bar! In a matter of months, Umph starts to turn bland. Part of it is a slight decline in food quality, but mostly the blandness is a result of acclimation. Frankly, we get a bit spoiled. The food we complain about for being competitive is still head and shoulders better than the food produced in most other universities. Thank God for Mac's place too. Mac's place is a grill/market place located on the first floor of one of the dorms in south quad and is open later in the night and evening. Yumm. Fourth meal of fries and a hot grilled chicken sammich!
Dorm Life The dorms at SMU are great. Of course, each dorm is known for having different reputations--reputation is perhaps too strong a word. Regardless of the different atmospheres of each dorm, over all, SMU takes care of the dorms nicely. Any needed repairs are addressed within the next day or so and events within each dorm are held to create a sense of community.
Academic Rigor Like so many other things in life, you get as much as you put in. Granted, there are those at SMU that are only here for their M-R-S degrees. If you choose to take the bare minimum and choose to party and blow off your classes, so be it. You have the option to do so. If you choose to bust your butt and push yourself by really submersing yourself in your classes, you'll get a lot out of your classes. They are intellectually stimulating and challenging if you allow them to be.
Tips for prospective students Do not be afraid to put yourself out there and take risks! It is so easy to make friends here because there is always something exciting going on. Go after those experiences you've never had before--take a couple of free lessons with the belly dance society; ride a mechanical bull at one of SMU's random boulevard events; buy bubble tea at the asian society's night market; see Will Ferrell up close at a screening put on by program council. If you can dream up a dream, there is someone somewhere on that campus with money that can help you make your dream happen if you're willing to work for it. SMU is a rich campus, rich with more opportunities than you can imagine; don't be afraid to ask for guidance because there is always someone to point you in the right direction.
In three sentences Once you immerse yourself in SMU, you will never want to leave. Though it seems superficial to believe that Life is too short to go to an ugly campus, SMU's serene and picturesque atmosphere is truly worth more than just a thousand dollar photograph on a brochure. The people are friendly, the opportunities are limitless, the professors are invested in your education, the fountains are infinite, and the grass is greener than any shade of green you've ever seen.

Greek Life They know how to have fun without being crazy.
Great for these types of students Want strong academics and lots to do on campus.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Annual lighting of the Christmas tree.
What to do for fun If you don't want to do any of the many things on campus, go out on the town.
Food and Dining Lots of different options, you won't grow tired of the food.
Dorm Life Every dorm is different. There are all freshman dorms, two art dorms, and four class dorms.
Academic Rigor Great academics.
Tips for prospective students Get involved on campus. Go to campus events.
In three sentences SMU has great teachers, lots of majors, and plenty to do on campus. The academic quality of the school is great, and you will learn a lot. Beautiful campus and plenty of ways to make friends.

Categories Comments Greek Life It feels like everyone is apart of greek life but don't feel pressure to join, though it is big on campus.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Boulevarding is like a big tailgating party on the boulevard before the football games, its super fun and there is a lot of free stuff.
Bang for the buck Depends how much you pay, and I feel like you could get a better education for the cheaper price tag.
What to do for fun There is a lot to on campus, which I can say is one reason I don't want to transfer from SMU. There is a party scene that I really am not a part of but it is pretty fun from what I heard. Also, on campus you can always find an event with free food or games that can be used as a break from your studies.
Food and Dining At first the food is amazing especially when you visit with your parents/family. But during the school year, there is a turn for the worst as the food gets more disgusting and lacking of favor at the main dining area of campus. The other dining place called Mac's place is a bit better, but there is a problem with cooking meat fully, so watch out.
Dorm Life Depends on the dorm and the person. I was lucky to live in one of the nicer dorms with a cool and clean roommates but it was one of the most expensive places to live on campus. If you want to live in the bigger and newer dorms it is going to cost you, and housing is pretty expensive But I can't speak for all the dorms because the freshman dorms(Boaz and Mcelvaney halls) are known for being dirty, crowded, small rooms, a lot of hooking up, drunk people breaking things causing everyone to pay for damages, which I'm sure some people cherish that college experience but personally I could not handle that type of living condition.
Academic Rigor Depends on your majors and really what class you enroll in. Some classes are pretty easy while others are hard as hell. Major contributing factor to the difficult of certain classes is the professor and not the subject. In my opinion, SMU hires a lot of crappy professor who are interested in the students doing the most and the professor doing the least, plus everything is on the student to learn the material.
Tips for prospective students Don't listen to all the hype that is hard to fit in if you anything different from being white, stuck-up, and rich, there are different types of people. However, there is a lack of racial diversity especially with black students but SMU prides itself on other types of diversity. Just come to SMU with a sense of who you are as a person and don't change.
In three sentences SMU is a pretty interesting school as you'll meet a lot of different types of people even though a lot of reviews say that there are just the same type of rich, stuck up white kids that attend. Academically, SMU strives in business and engineering, also there is strong footing when it comes to the art but SMU does lack in areas of the sciences, in my opinion. The campus is filled with opportunities such as internships, jobs, and career guidance that can help towards future goals and aspiring careers.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Party, hang out on the boulevard, go to football games, hang out at frat houses. Go to bus parties.
Food and Dining The food gets old, and its really expensive. I have a lot of friends who really like it though.
Dorm Life The dorm life is awesome, but the dorms are too small for my taste. Good for freshman year, but after that get out.
Academic Rigor People get what they want out of the university. I have met some really hard working students, and some really laid back students. The classes are not anywhere near impossible. Study hard and you'll do well.
Tips for prospective students Do well on your SAT and you can get a full ride. SMU gives out a lot of financial aid.
In three sentences It has a beautiful campus. The food is average. The college life is amazing.

Tips for prospective students get to know your professors and get involved.

Categories Comments Campus Safety there is police force specifically for the college that is monitoring the school 24/7 and emergency phones through out the school.
Clubs and Activities there is a club for just about everything and they hold many events besides those already held by the college itself. there is always something going on every day of the week.
Bang for the buck the tuition rate is high compared to most other universities, but smu does a great job of providing a generous amount of financial aide to its students. the majority of students here have some type of financial aide.
What to do for fun there are always events going on in hughs trigg that any one can go to. also, there are many clubs to choose from that are fun and will keep you busy. the rec center is also another option, it has just about everything you need to get a good workout in. on top of that are the intramural sports that you can join which are a great load of fun.
Food and Dining the food is exceptional i believe. i have tried many different things and have come to like many different things. there is always a large variety of choices so you will always find something to eat. however, the weekend food is not as great as it is during the week, but better then a lot of other campuses so i've been told.
Dorm Life the dorms can get a little crazy at times, it really isn't for me. i don't like being woken up at 2 or 3 in the morning by screaming and yelling from people who just returned from partying, but perhaps this is just my dorm. i have not heard many bad things from other dorms so you should find out for yourself.
Academic Rigor the courses are challenging, i have yet to take a real blow-off class. every class i have taken has challenged me in some kind of way which is what i look for because it helps me to become a better student. if you seek a challenge, you will find one here.
Tips for prospective students learning to organize and plan is key to success, and the faster you do this, the quicker college will be easier for you. after i learned to organize and plan my days out college became fairly easy, but before that it was hectic. learn to do these two things and learn them quickly.
In three sentences the academics at southern methodist university are outstanding. the professors are dedicated to their work, have a passion for their subject, and truly care about the success of their students. this really is a top-tier private university.

Categories Comments Campus Safety police are everywhere on campus; sometimes, it is a little too much to see them so often, but they are here for our safety. there's a fire department on campus and there's also giddyup (which is a covered golf cart that can take you around campus if you just call it on your cell phone) that especially comes in handy at night when you're coming home late from studying at the library.
Greek Life greek life, greek row, greek council...it's a big part of smu tradition. most everyone i know rushed, but it's not a bad thing. they are really like family and really close when it comes to bigs and littles.
Clubs and Activities smu has hundreds of clubs. it's so great. you can easily find a club to your liking, and if not, more than one. since smu has the money, you can easily get chartered if you have enough people to be in your club, so smu's really supportive of these things.
Great for these types of students if you are an artistic, musical person; you will fit perfectly in meadows school of the arts. if you love mechanical, engineering; you will fit perfectly in the lyle school of engineering. if you love business, accounting, marketing; you will fit perfectly in the cox school of business. if you like teaching, psychology, and anything other than what i listed; you'll fit at dedman. and last but not least, if you just like everything, you will fit at smu.
What to do for fun dallas has so many great things to do, places to hang out and places to just eat. when you're on campus, you feel like you're not in dallas though since it's like a different world; but around smu, it's a great place to be around.
Food and Dining the dining hall here is amazing. it's responsible for my freshman 15. if you get the meal plan, you have unlimited access to the dining hall, and you'll know where your tuition money is going towards. you can complain all you want about that, but at least you're eating good food.
Dorm Life it's so great. my residence hall is so community oriented that everyone knows each other and we have weekly get-togethers to just hang out. most all residence halls are like this and it's a good way to bond with others of different majors, backgrounds and talents.
Academic Rigor it is pretty competitive; the students here didn't come to college just to party. the library is almost always full, people are always working hard and even people i wouldn't expect to study so much studies. however, it's because they want to be the best they can be. with the education you get from smu, you don't want to waste it by merely playing around.
Tips for prospective students choose this school; you won't regret it.
In three sentences southern methodist university is a great college with caring faculty, amazing talented people, and a campus that makes you feel like you're in a totally different world. once you step onto campus, you'll never want to leave because of the atmosphere of this place and the enriching history of it just makes you feel even better.

Categories Comments Campus Safety constant rounds by securities guards, roaming gold carts to take you across campus, emergency buttons all over campus. super safe!
Greek Life greek life is the social scene.
Clubs and Activities lots available, but very greek.
Great for these types of students artists, business students, pre-meds, journalists.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus walking across the seal in dallas hall is tradition. don't step on it before graduation, or you won't graduate on time!
Bang for the buck smu is expensive, but it's worth it. and the financial aid staff works very hard to get you the aid you need.
What to do for fun greek life throws parties and formals constantly. central dallas is full of bars and nightlife.
Food and Dining lots of variety and delicious!
Dorm Life neighbors are friendly, dorms are nicely renovated.
Academic Rigor classes are hard, but rewarding if you do the reading.
Tips for prospective students get a semester at a glance from the learning center; it is a life saver. make sure you are managing your time well!
In three sentences southern methodist is vast, beautiful, and easy to navigate. the campus is inviting and classic, with roman inspired architecture and a diverse student body. classes are taught by highly intelligent and qualified professors who are leaders in their fields.

Categories Comments Campus Safety the campus is not closed off from the community so anyone can come on campus, but it still feels very safe to be here. smu police are very reliable and you will see them driving around from time to time. overall i have always felt very safe here.
Greek Life smu has a very large greek community on campus. while many people participate in greek life, you do not have to be a member in order to participate in it as well. the minority greek organizations are not nearly as big as the others but are there for anyone who is interested in them.
Bang for the buck smu is located in a very up-scale section of dallas, so many of the stores close to the campus tend to be very expensive.
What to do for fun there are a lot of club and organizations to get involved with on campus. on weekends i like to go the northpark mall which is only about a 20min drive away from the campus. there is a small local movie theatre called the angelika and the mall also has a movie theatre. i have gone to different clubs in the city which were really fun. dallas however is the type of city that does not have a great public transportation system. i would recommend having a car.
Food and Dining the cafeteria is good but not great. they do try to switch up the menu and provide as much variety as they can but i do get tired of it from time to time. we have a really good grill-style dining restaurant called mac's place that typically stays open until midnight. in addition to those they are also small fast food restaurants available in the student center during the day.
Dorm Life i live in a suite-style room with a private bathroom and study room. the rooms are fairly large and the bathrooms are cleaned every week. my hall in particular does not socialize very much but if you're looking for a quiet living environment then it's perfect.
Academic Rigor the courses here will challenge you, but they are in no way impossible. there are resources such as the alec and writing center to help you get the best grade possible. work hard and you will do well.
Tips for prospective students be sure to visit your professor's office hours whenever you need help in your courses and also try to get to know them. go to your academic advisor and make a four-year plan for the major you want so you don't run into any scheduling issues further down the line. lastly, find a good balance between your studies and your social life.
In three sentences what i love the most about smu is that the class sizes are small and provide a personal learning experience. the professors here are highly dedicated to what they do and are very accessible. there are also plenty of programs including a huge greek community to get involved with on campus.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students SMU is fit for those individuals who want a hands on college experience. This school isn't for someone who wants to hide in big lecture halls and remain unknown. SMU has small classes where every students name is heard. SMU provides tons of opportunities specific to students who are eager to take the initiative.
Tips for prospective students While it's easy to get caught up in getting high grades, SMU is looking for well rounded students. Not only is a high GPA important, but SMU really looks for those students who also value extracurricular activities and community service. They want to know that they are getting students who will make a difference on the SMU campus.
Bang for the buck SMU is extremely generous in providing scholarships to students coming out of high school. While I would pay the entire 50 grand for the college experience I am getting at SMU, it is even more satisfying that many students are paying much less for that same experience.
Am enjoying being here YES! SMU has such a welcoming community. Coming from California, I had no difficulties in the transition to a new state. SMU provides so many opportunities for students to participate in, and also puts on many activities. I easily got involved in several organizations, which allowed me to meet other students with common interests. SMU really makes an effort to make sure that their students are being catered to. For example, during finals week, SMU brought in dogs and puppies to play with on the lawn as stress relievers. Students are always first.
Am learning a lot SMU may have the reputation as being a common backup school, but I have found that the courses can be very challenging. Only being a freshman, my teachers thus far are extremely passionate about what they do. They set high standards for their students and really strive to teach the material in an interesting and though provoking way. SMU also requires that students complete five perspective courses from a variety of different subjects. This emphasizes the well rounded curriculum that SMU prides itself on.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for out-going, self-motivated, disciplined students.
Tips for prospective students Be yourself, stay organized, do not get ahead of yourself, set your priorities straight, balance work and play time, and go after what you want.
Bang for the buck Yes, SMU is definitely expensive but so are most colleges and universities. Like with anything, you have to put in effort in order to see results. In this case, you have to pay the tuition in order to give yourself the opportunity to do something with your SMU education. Whether or not you make the best of SMU education is up to you, but I know I am going to make mine well worth what I am paying to receive it.
Am enjoying being here I absolutely love it. I came to SMU literally knowing no one, and now I know hundreds of people. I have always known the same people throughout my life so it was nice for once to start fresh and make all new friends and acquaintances. I also love being in Dallas. The Highland Park area SMU is located in is beyond stunning and a safe neighborhood as well. SMU has the perfect balance of city life and college life, and I could not be happier with my decision.
Am learning a lot I truly am learning a lot both academically and socially. I enrolled in some rather challenging courses for my first year to test myself and it proved successful. Yes, sometimes the workload may have gotten overwhelming, but I knew that if I stayed organized and on top of things my hard work would pay off. If you are trying to get into the Cox School of Business, which I currently am, you will realize that you will not succeed if you slack off. SMU's Cox School of Business is the hardest department to get into and they make it that way for a purpose - to separate the ones willing to work to get there from those that do not put the equivalent effort in.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Haha, has anyone else noticed the admissions trends where you can have a high SAT but low GPA and get in, but not the other way around? ^_^ Explains so much. I'm pretty sure you have to have a solid resume/personal statement, though. Like 98% sure. Everyone here has a story. Personal Qualities to Have (that would make life at SMU easier and more enjoyable): Innovative, Open-minded, Proactive, Humanitarian ... Outgoing (I'm not outgoing, though. And I still love this school.)
Tips for prospective students As many have said: PLEASE DO NOT BE DETERRED BY OUR STEREOTYPE. AND IT WILL NEVER CHANGE IF YOU DO. I thought I was open-minded when I came here. Then, I began assuming things about people I'd never spoken to. I've recently found out that I had made an enormous miscalculation (was that a dorky word to use? cause right now I can't think of another to replace it.) Speak up, and someone will befriend you. :) P.S. MAKE FRIENDS WITH MEADOWS KIDS. They're pretty cool. ;) Also. Not happy with the level of class engagement? SPEAK UP. I've found that, when you speak up, everyone else will also have a lot more to say. Oh. As Grand Prairie said, please remember to take care of yourself. :( Just think of everyone who has dropped out, tried to drop out, attempted suicide or decided to shoot up a campus. Your well-being affects your schoolwork (and your future) just as much as your level of dedication. And look out for your friends. :) Stick by them through the tough stuff. And listen. Ask. You really never know who might be going through something. Most of you will not always have direct access to your parents, their home, your old friends, or your dog. You are each others' primary support system! As for grades, maybe you didn't do so hot in high school. Well, you're in college now. It's time to buckle down. It's nowhere near the end of the road, but every single one of your choices begin to have a much greater impact on your future! (But don't be scared. ^_^) Really it's all about trying to think about things on a deeper level and, like everyone else has seemed to say: TIME MANAGEMENT. And it matters way more than intelligence, prior knowledge or even (sadly) how much you actually care about the subject you're learning. (Oh, by the way, if you still end up needing another chance. Plan to go to grad school, and look for a grad school that only cares about your GPA for the last 60 or so credit hours.) *See below, on Bang for the buck As some have already said: Always plan ahead (WAY ahead)! Always have back-up plans! (Yes! Plural!) Oh yeah! Like everyone else has said: ALEC. GO THERE. Need more? Sign up for ORACLE. (Also, read their intro packet. It's ridiculously informative. You won't even realize how informative it was until months or years have passed.) ATTEND AS MUCH NEW STUDENT PROGRAMMING AS POSSIBLE. So much of it may seem profoundly cheesy to you right now. But YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT. And when it's crunch time, and you're stressed, and you want to throw your hands up and run away: feel so lucky to even be in school. Feel so. so. lucky. * * * * * * Please take all these great reviews to heart. These are all things that I wish someone had told me years ago!
Bang for the buck Lots of people have scholarships. 100% tuition would be expensive. But you are paying for quality. (There are so many opportunities here that would be hard to come by as an undergraduate enrolled in a public university. I would know. I came from one.) With reference to Sarah's review: (I just learned this today, actually.) If you are at all interested in attending grad school, go all out and get a PhD! Did you know that some schools will pay you tuition, housing, food, AND a stipend to get a PhD? Often, the Masters is included in the PhD! And in the end, you'll also be a lot more marketable! (But you have to really really love learning. And be able to tolerate completing a thesis. Or it would probably only be unnecessary torture.)
Am enjoying being here See above!
Am learning a lot Heck yes. SMU gives you MANY opportunities to perform extra research and try out other projects AS AN UNDERGRAD (if you so seek). I'm always getting e-mails from my department about opportunities to get involved - and even get published. AS AN UNDERGRAD. (Dunno if you want to go to grad school, but if so - THAT IS HUGE) The faculty and staff here are STELLAR. AND THEY ACTUALLY CARE. And if you start to fall ... they won't let you hit rock bottom. :) You might also be interested to know that they also offer classes during May, Summer I, Summer II, August, and Winter Break. And they have so many interesting courses. Check out their listings: http://access.smu.edu

Categories Comments Great for these types of students The school is great for those who are somewhat self-motivated. The professors aren’t going to hold your hand and walk you through the semester. You’ll have to be ready to jump right in and make it happen for yourself. It’s also great if you want a balance between academics and the social scene. You’ll have the best of both worlds.
Tips for prospective students My advice to prospective students is to just come visit with an open mind. Forget about the stereotypes that you’ve heard. Forget about the cost. Just visit and experience SMU. As for your application, highlight your best moments or activities. Get involved, and be a leader. If you’re a senior who doesn’t have the highest grades or experience as a leader or didn’t stretch yourself thin to be in 500 clubs in high school, just express who you are in your application. Give the admissions counselors a reason to pick you over the thousands of other applicants. If possible, schedule an interview. You’ll have a chance to present yourself, face-to-face. You will cease to be another piece of paper, and they’ll be able to see who you are as a person and what you offer as a future Mustang.
Bang for the buck Oh, the joys (horrors) of paying for a college education. There’s no doubt about it. Southern Methodist University is an expensive place to receive your education. However, they do make the financial burden a little easier to bear. They give out so many scholarships and grants to students. Financial cost was a big factor for me when I was deciding where to go. I never thought SMU would be a place to consider. My mind definitely changed when I received my financial aid package, and SMU was my cheapest option for college. I’m paying next to nothing, and I honestly don’t know anyone who is not on some form of financial aid. So, SMU definitely delivers considering its price tag. It’s a great experience, and there are so many opportunities for networking for future needs. Being so close to downtown Dallas, SMU provides many opportunities outside of the classroom for research, internships, and employment.
Am enjoying being here Honestly, I never wanted to go to SMU. Even after securing my spot in the class, I was dreading the day when I would have to go. I refused to even visit the campus until it was necessary. However, I am extremely glad that I am here. The campus is beautiful, and the people are amazing. There's a nice balance between academics and a social life. In my experience, the professors are easy to talk to, both inside and outside of class. The campus is in the heart of Dallas, so there’s always something to do at night, whether on or off campus. I know SMU has a reputation (Southern Millionaires University) of being full of snobby, rich children who were not good enough to get into Ivy League schools. While those people do exist, the majority of students are down to earth. It’s not hard to avoid people that you don’t want to be around. You’ll meet people from every status group and station of life while you’re here, and you will find your group where you belong. Like I said, I am thoroughly enjoying my time here. When I leave campus, I can’t wait to get back.
Am learning a lot The classes are as hard or as easy as you make them. Yes, some subject materials are harder than others, but it’s really not that hard to get an A in your classes. More importantly, come into class with an open mind to the class and professor, despite what you may have read on ratemyprofessor.com. I am learning so much in my classes right now. The professors are great, and they know their subject materials. They are approachable and always accessible, either via email or face to face. But in the end, how much you learn comes down to your willingness to learn. Besides academics, you learn things such as time management. Sometimes, the best lessons come in self-discipline. I had to learn how to say no to a fun night out, and instead, stay in to study for an exam. I’ve also learned so much about people, an inevitable consequence of community-style living. I’ve learned how to do deal with people I can’t ignore or get away from. Each day is a learning experience.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you're looking for a school that can pretty much ensure you a job with alumni resources one day, SMU is for you.
Tips for prospective students Do not make impulsive decisions about what you want to do, and consider that your major plans might be better off varying from school to school. One program might be perfect for YOU at one school, and not so much at another.
Bang for the buck The main reason why I ended up choosing SMU was because they offered me enough money to actually be here! They have a very strong endowment and alumni donor base. I find that it's common for people to have chosen SMU for the financial aid offer. Whether that's a good or a bad thing, it is what it is.
Am enjoying being here I think just because of my initial major choice, I have not had the experience I expected out of college. It's certainly not the fault of SMU, because all the resources to having a fun and joyful time are here! I think it's a mixture of being so close to home, when I could be far away, and my learning that the degree I'm currently pursuing is not beneficial for the direction I'm headed. It happens. It will work out when it's supposed to though! I know there are a lot of people who are very happy with their choice. Just really consider what you're getting yourself into, and what's worth your 4 years at SMU. Make the most of it.
Am learning a lot I am finding that most of what I am learning is everything I did NOT expect to be learning about. But, I suppose that's college for you! In the classroom, I'm learning more about staying engaged when I'm not challenged or indifferent to the subject matter. The classes move at a steady rate, though and it all depends on which major you choose to determine what type of work you will do during the day.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students SMU would be great for out-going people because everybody just talks to everybody! The students here are very nice and welcoming, so you'll always find a group that you belong to. They love to hang out, but they are always considerate about having to study for a quiz or exam. In addition, SMU has a good Greek life. So if you are interested in joining a sorority or fraternity, then SMU would be the great place to go to.
Tips for prospective students Be organized! I know you might hear that a lot, but seriously, it's true. High school is different that college. In high school, you used to have quizzes and homework all the time to keep you on track. In college, however, all you have is exams, and they basically make up 100% percent of your grade. No quizzes, no homework. So try to stay on top of things. Try to make a calendar or schedule that will help you with time management. If you have any trouble with a certain subject, make use of the ALEC tutoring center - it's free! And don't forget - always work out at the Dedman Life Center because it might be your only way to relieve the stress.
Bang for the buck SMU's tuition is kind of expensive, considering the fact that it went up to almost $37,000 this year. However, if you are a good student, there might a chance for you to get some merit-based scholarships. In addition, you can get scholarships from the department itself. For example, I got a scholarship from the chemistry department after declaring my major.
Am enjoying being here Two of my friends from high school have transferred in to SMU this semester, so it was fun hanging out with them. However, I also made new friends who are very nice. The campus is really pretty, so you'll enjoy going to SMU. They basically have every type of restaurant you desire - whether on campus, or just right next to it.
Am learning a lot My experience at SMU has been very rewarding since it has open up for me many opportunities. After taking organic chemistry, I realized that I have a great passion for learning about how things happen at the atomic and molecular level. In addition, I realized that I have a passion for research because in a way or another, you are creating knowledge by finding new discoveries. I decided that instead of going for an MD only, I want to pursue an MD/PhD degree because I get to combine the two things I like the most - being a physician and being a scientist.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Intelligent and dedicated. Wonderful for minorities and women engineers because of the scholarships. Great school for liberal arts, business, and engineering.
Tips for prospective students Apply early to avoid stress. I suggest you tour the campus in order to know what residence hall you would like to live in. Once you gain acceptance, make sure to turn in your residence hall papers as quickly as possible in order to receive your first choice. I suggest attending any events like Mustang Days in order to meet people and a possible roommate. Avoid taking too many hours especially if majoring in a difficult field with difficult professors. That being said, ratemyprofessor.com is an amazing site so do your research before signing up for classes. Once you have your schedule, find where your classes are so you wont get lost and always have your books on the first day of class. Also, do not be skeptical and make sure you study. The workload is a lot more rigorous than high school so form study groups, work diligently, and do not procrastinate.
Bang for the buck SMU is definitely an expensive school. Because of the scholarships and financial aide I received I was able to attend the school of my choice. Although most of the people there are wealthy, there are also others receiving help so there is no need to feel inferior. SMU is a beautiful campus with many resources for the students to use. From the dance performances to the sporting events, the money paid is definitely worth it. Because it is a prestigious and private school, the cost is high but do not hesitate to apply, financial aide is available.
Am enjoying being here Although grades are important, fun is necessary for staying sane. SMU's location is perfect because it is in the heart of Dallas. With the restaurants on Hillcrest and Greenville so close by, there is always somewhere to eat and locations to shop. On campus there are also many activities to do whether it be rockclimbing in the gym or socializing in Java City. Even the library becomes a fun hang out spot during study breaks.
Am learning a lot SMU has an amazing academic curriculum and expects a lot from its students. Although the workload is intense, time management is the key to success. Each professor gives a syllabus on the first day of class so writing the important dates down on a calendar helps visualize how much studying is needed. Depending on the major, some classes may be harder than others but regardless, a lot of studying is needed. I was never pushed so hard in high school and it took getting used to but I enjoy it. The ALEC tutoring center is always available and office hours are great for getting questions answered and getting to know your professor.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students SMU is a great school for student who want to work hard to achieve their goals. It is not a blow off school. It is also great for students who are interested in business. SMU's Cox business school is ranked as one of the best business schools in the nation. SMU is a liberal arts school, so you have to take a bunch of diverse classes. If you are interested in being a well-rounded individual, then SMU would be good for you.
Tips for prospective students The most important thing to remember when coming to any college of high academic standing is to go to class. That sounds kind of silly, but it's true. So many kids come to college and decide that they will skip some classes because attendance isn't mandatory like in high school. That is a very bad habit to get into. I know students who are very intelligent but failed classes because they couldn't keep up with the rest of the class due to skipping lessons. Also, when you skip, often the teachers will notice because the class sizes are small. They won't want to help you catch up because it seems like you don't care about their subject. Another helpful tip is to not procrastinate. there's so much going on that it's easy to wait til the last minute, but unlike in high school, your grade really will suffer.
Bang for the buck SMU is pretty expensive. It was like $46,000 a year. That's why scholarships are so important. If you try hard in your classes and make the most of your time here, the money is worth the degree. The degree only becomes worth less when there are kids not taking their classes seriously, and in that sense they are wasting the money. But I think that is the same at every college. If you come to college to goof off instead of work hard, you won't get very far.
Am enjoying being here SMU is located in Dallas, Texas. There is so much going on in Dallas all the time. You won't ever get bored here. Also, being in Dallas, there are a bunch of career and internship opportunities. SMU is the perfect blend of small town community and big town enterprise. The campus is close-knit and interactive within different clubs as well as Dallas as a whole. The campus is gorgeous and green. As a very visual person, the beauty of the campus is an important thing for me. I would get tired of a dull and ugly campus. Also, the food on campus isn't that bad either. In the main cafeteria, they have an omelet station, cereal bar, soul food booth, grill, and a Chinese food grill. There is also an Einsteins Bros. Bagels, Subway, and Chick-fil-a, on campus. There are even two general stores on campus that have everything from sushi to cough syrup to cheese itz. I love staying on campus. The environment as a whole is just perfect.
Am learning a lot SMU is a wonderful school academically. I loved all of my professors, and they were mostly all amiable. They all had an interest in every student's personal achievement and progress. The professors all have office hours for extra help and are more than willing to help you get the most out of your classes. I've only been here a semester, but I feel like I've already learned so much. The English and History programs are exceptional. I feel that they have prepared me for much more advanced levels of academics.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you have a substantial amount of money, if your parents don't make that much, or if you have good grades, SMU will be good for you. They give out great financial aid + scholarships. And you have to be cool, I know SMU is stereotyped for its shallow people, but we're really changing that. You also have to be pretty accepting to the students, and most of them are.
Tips for prospective students Get the medium amount of flex dollars. Don't buy pony dollars, they're just like regular dollars except you have to spend them. DON'T stay in your dorm! unless you live in Perkins, which then you won't be that bored. Go to the Gym, you don't have to work out but that is where you can meet a lot of people, and there is always something to do.
Bang for the buck SMU is expensive, let's just leave it at that.
Am enjoying being here It's been a great first year, and I owe a lot of that to the people I met. I stayed in Perkins, kinda crappy dorm but the people there were awesome. I thought I was going to go to a school filled with snobby kids but everyone is pretty mellow. Great community, I met a lot of cool people and had a lot of great experiences.
Am learning a lot PHIL 1300 was a really interesting class, the professor was a little drab, but I learned a lot. Also Intro to EE was really engaging. I learned a lot of cool concepts and things that I could actually use & the prof was top-notch. I started to think differently about everything, but I now I hardly notice it. I think that's when you know you've really learned something.
