SVU is a small university in a small town. You wouldn't expect there to be much to do, but the school hosts a fair amount of activities throughout the week, and especially on weekends. They host date nights, dances, athletic games, theatre performances, and musical performances. Although there might not be much to do in Buena Vista itself right now, the town does plan on expanding soon, meaning a lot more activities will be available in town as soon as that happens. There is another small town (but larger than BV) that's about ten to fifteen minutes away called Lexington with much more to do including a movie theatre, more shopping, etc. Roanoke is also about an hour drive from campus and has all the activities you could ever think of, and probably had the nearest malls. There are very scenic areas around SVU including the blue ridge parkway, the flood wall in BV, and some hiking/picnic areas along the blue ridge. Most of these wound require a car to get to them.

There's many different outdoor activities: river rafting/tubing, hiking, and Panther Falls. There's musicals and plays as well as choir, band and orchestra. Anyone, no matter the major, can be involved.

Define fun. Just kidding, honestly if you have a fun group there is endless things you can do that are entertaining. Getting involved with service projects and meeting lots of new people gives you a variety of things to do! The campus does their best to put on movies and dances but you have to GO to them! There is a variety of people to hang out with and clubs you can join.

Many students go off campus to have fun around here. Students go to Lexington to catch a movie or get some gelato. Lots of students also go hiking around on independent trails or drive up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. If you want to see some history, then you can go check out Thomas Jefferson's house called Monticello. If you are itching for some museums and national monuments, then you can drive up to Washington, D. C. and spend the day up there either stopping in the art museum or the Air and Space Museum, or you can take a stroll down by the White House and the Washington Monument.

Being in a small town close by fun is difficult to find. But, making friends with students who have cars driving to Lexington, Roanoke, Lynchburg and Staunton are really fun and have a lot of activities!

If you know someone with a car, Lexington is a great place to explore, as it has many historical sites and intriguing shops. It's also got some nice scenery around, and it's only 10 minutes or so away with a car. Without a car, just walking around Buena Vista brings some beautiful sites, as there are many wonderful trees and pathways to explore. Also, the town community hosts events that are always open to the students, like the annual Mountain Days Festival, that is lots of fun to pop in on.

  • I am accepted here and planning to attend soon

The activities for fun depend on you a lot. If you want to, you can find things to do. There a frequent activities, but when there aren't activities, the town has little to offer. In these moments you'll have to invent something, but there's plenty of potential.
