Categories Comments Campus Safety Some of you reading this may have heard about the so-called shooting on campus a few weeks back. Granted, yes, it WAS a shooting, but not by or towards any SMC students. Some young guy (NOT an SMC student) went and tried to steal a car, and then tried to run over the police officer who was trying to stop him; the police officer rightfully shot at the car and accidentally hit the thief. The officer was Campus Safety (the night watch), and so this raises rather than lowers Campus Safety in my regard. I know that the officers on duty are able and willing to shoot in defense of themselves and anyone in the school. This makes me feel very safe even though the school is situated in the middle of...well, to be honest, the ghetto. I often see Campus Safety officers around campus and know that we are well-protected.
Greek Life There are no actual fraternities/sororities that I know of at SMC.
Clubs and Activities I'm not qualified to comment on this either since I am not part of any club, nor have I done any activities with/provided by SMC. However, I do know that Kappa Sigma Alpha (KSA), a community service club, is very strong there and is an excellent way to give back to the community.
Great for these types of students I think almost any kind of student will thrive at SMC. Granted, those of high intelligence and academic achievement might feel a bit out of place, but any of you other geeks are welcome to join me! (Haha!) Really, though, SMC seems to be easy enough for those who struggle somewhat with school and still advanced enough to keep the smart ones' attention and interest. The students seem friendly and, for those of you who have actual social skills (unlike myself), you shouldn't have any problem making lots of friends and fitting in.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus November 30 was the Hanging of the Greens ceremony in the chapel, and afterward the large Christmas tree in the student plaza was lit. I wasn't able to go, but it sounds like it was a very festive and enjoyable tradition! The student plaza is notable as well, in my opinion. It's just a smallish brick circle in the middle of the upper part of the campus, but it looks nice, and there are two porch swings on either side. Sitting there in the fall, with the leaves swirling down and the breeze blowing and the sun shining, was absolutely splendid.
Bang for the buck Seeing as you'll be going more or less for free if your GPA is 3.0 or higher, only having to pay fees and books (and housing, I think, to live on campus), SMC is excellent value. It's a great way to start out your higher education, maybe even discover that college might not be for you even though you thought it was--or vice versa! The courses are rather easy, I'm sure much easier than a four-year institution, and when you graduate and get ready to transfer to a four-year, you'll have all your General Education requirements out of the way so you can fully focus on the REAL stuff--whatever your major is. Also, optional chapel services on Wednesdays and Sundays provide a church home, whether you live on campus or not.
What to do for fun Go to the library and browse their large and wonderful array of antique books! Being a Methodist-affiliated college, their selections on theology, sermons, and other Biblical studies are particularly extensive. Happily, their offerings on history and mythology are not too shabby, either! However, if you're one of those mad social butterflies, the West Side of Spartanburg and Westgate Mall are 5 minutes away (10 if traffic is bad). Otherwise, you can stay in your dorm and play video games, or just sit outside on campus if it's nice weather and enjoy the pretty landscaping.
Food and Dining If you're looking for a variety of different places on campus, maybe expecting a little branch of a fast-food chain, look elsewhere. As far as I can gather, all dining services on campus are provided through a company called Sodexo, and there are only three places: the dining hall (cafe), a sub/pizza place, and I'm not even quite sure what the third place serves. However, in my opinion, the cafe is quite good: you have to pay each time you enter (so no leaving and coming back for a bite), but once you're in it's all-you-can-eat. Main meals vary by the day and there is always a salad bar and classics like burgers, chicken sandwiches and fries. Dessert also varies but there are always cookies and an ice cream dispenser. Breakfasts are generally good--I recommend the pancakes and sliced lyonnaise potatoes--and they have French Vanilla cappuccino as well as regular coffee. Lots of fast-food restaurants are within 5-10 minutes' drive of campus, as well.
Dorm Life I am not qualified to comment on this, as I am a commuter student. However, resident acquaintances seem satisfied with their housing accommodations. My star rating is arbitrary; I was going to leave it blank but the site would not let me. (Which, honestly, is kind of unfair because they're not taking commuters into account.)
Academic Rigor I rather regret to say that the academics at SMC are not rigorous at all for someone of my level--at least, not this semester (my first). It is a junior college, though, and apparently very easy to get into, so your expectations on this point should not be very high anyway. I have no doubt, however, that I will find those subjects at which I am worst challenging enough. Tests in the classes I have taken so far have been quite short, simple, and generally worded almost exactly the way the professor put it in class. Professors are generally excellent and get along well with most students.
Tips for prospective students If you are planning to be a commuter (which you can only do if you live in Spartanburg County, barring special circumstances), choose the Pioneer Points meal plan. It's not really a meal plan, but points that act like cash in the cafeteria and, I think, the bookstore as well. Meal prices for Pioneer Points are a bit cheaper than cash at-the-door prices, so it'll save you a bit of money; also, unused money on your account rolls over to the following semester. If you have any problems or concerns, talk to the Dean when he's out and about on campus--he's very personable and truly cares about the students!
In three sentences SMC is a very good junior college with an wide array of scholarships, including free tuition if your GPA is 3.0 or higher. The campus is small, the landscaping is very pleasant, and the library has an excellent collection of antique books available for checkout. As a commuter student, I can't speak for the housing, but the cafeteria is quite good--all-you-can-eat every meal, every day, with a wide variety of choices but always a few classics like burgers and fries.

Categories Comments What to do for fun SMC has many programs and orginizations you can get involved with if you have spare time. The school also holds many events to keep the fun along. Such as movies on the lawn, a block party (with fuddruckers) and a paint party.
Food and Dining We have the cafe, which has some favorites, from cereal, to pizza and fries. We have a sub shop which is better than subway in my opinion. And if you are a late snacker (like I am) we have Judd's cellar which stays open until midnight.
Dorm Life Dorm life is fun, many dorms do activities for the residents of the building, to get you out of your room (and these activities always have food!).
Academic Rigor Classes push you, they make sure you are getting the most out of the education, if it is too much, the teachers and the tutoring center are very helpful.
Tips for prospective students Sign up for classes quickly, the best ones get filled up quickly. Make sure to know where the tutoring center is, it is very helpful. Time management, stay on deadlines!
In three sentences Spartanburg Methodist offers many majors. SMC classes are very small so you can have that interaction with your teacher. Spartanburg Methodist has many clubs and organizations that you can get involved in if you have some free time.

Categories Comments What to do for fun For me i like to visit all of the activities we have on campus like every night. there is always something going on, like the naked truth were the students tell you whats really going on in college.
Food and Dining The food is amaazing if you live on campus you will have 19 meals a week where you can ether eat at the cafe, sub shop, or judd celler. the cafe is like any caffiteria but with fresh cooked sothern style cooking. The sub shop is kinda like a subway but with better ingredients. And judd celler is a snack shop that is open when the cafe and sub shop are closed and stays open fron 9pm to 12am every night mon-thurs.
Dorm Life The rooms are really nice and are safe, there are card key locks on the outside doors to get into the building and your own keys to get into your room. some dorms are suite style while others are roommate style both are very nice.
Academic Rigor The classes are what you make them if you party all the time then yhea they will be hard but overall the classes seem to be standard college level classes. All the teachers are there to help you succed so if your having trouble talk to them and find a tutor they are all student who have had that class before you.
Tips for prospective students Make lots of friends expecialy thouse who were here last year and thouse that are interested in the same feild of study as you. If you can find a way to share a book with a friend for the same class on diffrent days do it because it will save you money.
In three sentences The student are really nice and very helpfull. The college is set up so that you really can't get lost and there is always someone around to help you find your way. the campus is beautiful but expect to walk around alot.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus Safety is great here. They are always on call and will come where ever you need them. They will unlock your door if you are locked out and are very nice and caring.
Clubs and Activities Pops is a wonderful Club here on campus that tries to get student involved and throws together parties and movies nights.
Great for these types of students Smc is a great place for athletes. Everyone comes out to games and supports other teams.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus They just built this new Cafe under Judd residence hall where there are, on some nights, karaoke contests and such.
What to do for fun Well Spartanburg is a very populated city so there are plenty of things to do. Also, the school is only five minutes from downtown so your never too far from a good time. There are normally baseball and softball games going on on the weekends and occasionally a little game of pick football on the campus lawn.
Food and Dining I never thought I would say this but the food is amazing. College cafeterias are normally gross but SMC really does a good job with variety and quality of the food.
Dorm Life Dorm Life is great. You meet so many people and become close friends with all or your roommates and suite mates. Laundry is free and everyone is real respectful with you clothes and belongings.
Academic Rigor SMC is mediocre in class difficulty. I guess it just depends on the courses you are taking and the load of credit hours you have per semester.
Tips for prospective students Taking and tour is key. The campus is very small but it can be kind of intimidating coming in for your first year in college. So take a tour and get to know the campus really well. Also, if you play a sport talk with the coaches here on campus they will be more than happy to talk to you and help you out with anything you need.
In three sentences Spartanburg Methodist College is small, two year college which is a great transition college for the high school student. The students and faculty are very helpful and are willing to go above and beyond for you. SMC is a great choice for graduating seniors.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck To me it's not all about money or how much it really cost, but only if I'm in real need.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Hard working and dedicated. Even if your not the best student, SMC will work with you to help you achieve your goals.
Tips for prospective students Study hard and have a good relationship with your professors. The professors at SMC want to give you the tools so that when you transfer to a four year college you will do well.
