Categories Comments Campus Safety
The campus has 24-hour on-call security that actively patrol the campus. The security team is extremely friendly, professional, and eager to help in any way possible.
At the moment, there aren't any fraternities or sororities affiliated with the campus.
Clubs and Activities
There are more clubs than I can name, but two of the major clubs that stood out to me were the Toastmasters and the Investment Club. Toastmasters, for those that aren't familiar, is a club that will help to improve one's presentation skills. The Investment Club is for those that are interested in various investments. What stood out to me about this club in particular, is that the club dives in feet first into the investment market and actually gets into investing.
Great for these types of students
If you like being challenged, getting out of your comfort zone, and working hard- then this is the place for you. No matter your background or walk of life, there is something for everybody at SLC.
Bang for the buck
The connections I have made here alone were worth the time. In my time, I have met the Premier of Ontario, the President and CEO of St. Lawrence College- Mr. Glenn Vollebregt, the CEO and CFO of Pita Pit, economists for major banking institutions, and wide range of other business and community leaders. It's an incredible place to learn and grow one's network.
What to do for fun
There is a ton to do in and around Kingston. If you want to get immersed in SLC, there are a ton of intramural and varsity athletics, fitness classes, clubs, and social groups to participate in. If you're more into the nightlife, there are buses that can take you straight to the downtown hub from the campus. SLC is also really close to both the Kingston Center (shopping center) and the Cataraqui Mall. There are also two major game/comic stores that offer a wide range of competitive gaming, as well as all of the shopping in the downtown hub.
Food and Dining
The cafeteria is contracted through Brown's Fine Foods. Pita Pit, Papa John's, and Tim Horton's are on campus and are extremely reasonably priced.
While I did not live in the Dorms, I have been in them. They are very well kept, have the necessities, and are comfortable. If you like to cook your own meals, I would advise looking for an apartment. The single-occupancy rooms only have a sink in the bathroom and it definitely is a challenge for dishes- even if you're just washing breakfast dishes. The double-occupancy rooms have better amenities, but preparing your own meals is still a challenge.
You will be challenged. Those that come to SLC for the wrong reasons don't tend to stick around long because the course load is very challenging. You will be pushed out of your comfort zone, but the faculty will spend the time to help you if you need it, or get you to a person that can.
Tips for prospective students
If you know you are weak in a particular area, be upfront about it. The instructors will get you linked in with whatever resources you need to succeed. The faculty really do care about whether or not you succeed- this is not your typical college/university.
In three sentences
Coming to St. Lawrence College was definitely, without question, the best decision I could have made about my education. The staff get to know who you are, take a real interest in you, and are all about facilitating your success. If nothing else, the connections one can make here are worth it, in and of themselves.
