there is always the hiking option or going to the beach at natural bridges which is beautiful. there's good food downtown and events that are always going on. the catalyst always has shows too and there's midnight showings at del mar.

Downtown is only a 20 minute bus ride away, so if city life and shopping is your thing, hop on any of the metro buses. last stop will take you straight to downtown! Also a bus ride away is the beach, a bit colder than the socal beaches I'm used to, but still all the beauty and the fun. If that still doesn't call to go, there's a million places to explore on the campus, secret forest trails (that get you to class faster), the treehouse, the porter caves, the carousel, ect! exploring and hiking are my absolute favorites.

Hop on the 16 and go downtown! There are so many fun things to do downtown- the movies, concerts, window shopping. Or hop on the 20 and go to the beach. The boardwalk is also pretty fun and not too far from campus. Like I said earlier, all of the colleges always out on fun events too.

If you like nature, you're gonna be just fine. The entire campus is right in the middle of this huge redwood forest, and there's several places you can hike to and explore. I remember the first week I was there it was a huge deal to go visit, the caves, which are this network of underground caves that you can crawl through and explore if a little adventure is your thing. There's also an entire forest to hike through and there's several landmarks in there as well, including a river, standing stones, and these treehouses you can climb up to. If thats not your thing, the public transportation is amazing and its very easy to catch a bus to any of the many beaches around the area, or to go downtown and go shopping or see a movie at the Regal Cinemas. Also, this is much more of a niche, but I'm a very athletic individual and I vastly enjoy the great range of sports offered. I'm normally a runner, but my freshman year I explored the club on campus dedicated to freerunning and parkour, as well as joined the Grappling Club, which is dedicated to UFC-style ground martial arts.

Downtown is always nice and there a good enough of variety of shops and restaurants. There's also a Trader Joes and CVS by downtown as well.

After I visited the campus, I went and saw the boardwalk. If you can get over the tourists, screaming children, and slightly overpriced, well, everything, then it's actually really cool.

To be honest, I volunteer for fun. I joined a club, CKI, and it basically took over my weekends. The best part about that club is that it is very service and social based. The school and the town are dead during the weekend, so joining a club is the best decision if you're like me. Another thing to do is to keep a watchful eye for activities from the other colleges. They might host an awesome convention, or maybe a mini zumba session. It depends on the person, if he/she wants to do something fun. They will eventually find it rather than sit around.

Going downtown is always fun, there are a lot of restaurants in downtown Santa Cruz. Once you are 21, there is also a great night life in downtown Santa Cruz including bars and clubs. If you are into nature (which you probably are if you chose to attend UC Santa Cruz: just look at the campus) then the Monterrey Bay Aquarium and Monarch trail at Natural Bridges are not far from downtown. A little touristy, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is always a safe and fun bet for something to do. The first week of every school year, UCSC puts on a Beach Board Walk Frolic, where the boardwalk is closed down to the public, and students can enjoy rides and attractions together after purchasing a ticket. It's very fun and I would recommend it.
