Berkeley is a great school chock full of award-winning, book-publishing, enthusiastic professors who really know their stuff. If you take classes you're really interested in, you'll learn more. Don't forget about office hours, tutoring sessions, and study groups. Besides the required curriculum, there are a whole lot of opportunities to expand your view of the world - theater, symposia, films, lectures, and of course the occasional crazy person giving a speech on Sproul.

  • I am researching this school and have not visited the campus

Seems like a great place for a young liberal. Berkeley has a beautiful campus. I really want to visit soon and see if it is a good fit in person and not just through a screen.

Berkeley is a huge research university with a ton of resources for students. Students should be ready to take initiative if looking into Berkeley because the resources can seem out of reach. It's a warm community, and with so much going on all types of people can find their place at Cal.

  • I am a current student here

Cal is a very politically active campus. There are few weeks that go by without seeing any sort of demonstration occurring. As such, it's an interesting and engaging place to be for everyone who attends.

Berkeley is a place where students encounter changes, be changed, and aspire to make difference. Students are exposed to different perspectives and ideas. It is hard to be satisfy with normality in this environment.

  • I am researching this school and have visited the campus

UC Berkeley is more liberal and open-minded, and you'll often hear students talking about social issues or chatting about the latest political stirrup in the news. The campus is large and airy, with both old and new architecture mashed together on the ever-expansive campus. You can visibly tell the difference between students, visitors, and tourists, and it's funny to watch groups of people on campus tours walking around and snapping pictures of maybe 5 or 6 of the most historical buildings.

REASONS TO COME/ATTEND: If you are a "person of color" come to this school If you are of "alternative sexuality" come to this school If you are Asian come to this school If you are a Democrat come to this school If you seriously know the area or come from the Bay Area come to this school If you are a city/urban person, come to this school If you are feminist come to this school If you enjoy smoking marijuana come to this school If you have a "mother earth" hippy type mindset come to this school If you are a big fan of John Lennon, come to this school If the 1960s is your favorite decade, come to this school If you enjoy being hyperfocused on studying, come to this school REASONS NOT TO ATTEND: Recruiters want you to work in Silicon Valley where there are high salaries but offset by impossibly high cost of living If you are an urban/suburban person, do not come to this school If you are a Country person, do not come to this school If you are white you will be assumed to have "privilege" If you believe in gender ideals do not come to this school If you do not want to pretend men are women and women are men you will be shamed like you are Hitler If you do not believe in Affirmative Action, you will not have a good time Professors work together with off-campus organizations like BAMN (By any means necessary) to stage protests without having the responsibility of direct involvement and to do their dirty work. If you are conservative you will not have a good time. Large Class Sizes and Cutthroat expectations More Theory Based than Hands On (for engineers) Expensive (33k for in state residents) In the industry I was interested in (defense, tech), school brand name is not that important. Would have saved more money and had a fun time somewhere else.
