Categories Comments Campus Safety Super safe.
Greek Life There's some small frats and sororities.
Great for these types of students LGBT
What to do for fun Go on a hike or to the beach..... thats about it.
Food and Dining The timing for meals is kind of weird and interferes with many students class schedules because of this many people miss dinner. They have a late night option which is quick made meals starting at 7 pm but this year they made it so you can only go to late night 16 times which is dumb in my opinion. The food is made by sodexo and honestly it isn't very good.
Dorm Life The double dorms are decent size and come with any necessary furniture. The suites have 2 bedrooms, personal showers and a living room. But, the single dorms are too small in my opinion. They have all girls floors and other options.
Academic Rigor The coursework from my first year was not very difficult. It's a small campus so it lacks a lot of things a large university has, like new research equipment or on-campus facilities.
Tips for prospective students If you aren't a local or if you do not enjoy being in the middle of nowhere, don't attend this school. Its in a very rural and isolated area. Also as long as you keep up with assignments and pay attention to class syllabus's, you will succeed here.
In three sentences It's a very small school, smaller than most high schools. It's in an isolated area, the nearest shopping center is over an hour away! It's in a scenic area, which is beautiful. This school reminds me too much of a high school, which I don't like.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is a very small campus. We do have 1 security guard, but nothing much happens up here. There is also a hospital not even a mile from campus if anything should happen.
Greek Life There is Greek life on campus
Clubs and Activities Sports are always a go to here whether you are on a team or support them. A couple other groups on campus include ukulele club, gaming club, thespians, outing club, WUMM Radio, paranormal club and so on. There is something for everyone and if you want to start one up, all you need is a couple of friends and talk to Student Senate.
What to do for fun Machias may be a small campus, but there is stuff to do if you know where to look. There are events on campus such as movies in the PAC, bingo nights, manhunt, laser tag and so on.
Food and Dining Now granted, I am picky when it comes to food, which explains why I've eaten mostly their pizza this semester. It's good, but gets old real fast. If you're like me and want to stay on campus, I recommend making some of your own food from time to time.
Dorm Life Dorm life is pretty cool. It's a completely new experience for most people and it's where you'll most likely form bonds with the people around you. As for the rooms themselves, the freshman dorm, Sennett, is mostly doubles, but are still big enough for the two people living there.
Academic Rigor Depending on your major, you will have a rigorous workload your first semester. Marine Biology students are usually the ones with the heavy workload as you go so much in depth about the ocean, the science behind it, its inhabitants and how it all works together. The workload may be rigorous, but your professors are always willing to help you out and after your first semester, you'll be on a first name basis with them.
Tips for prospective students It may be far from home or lots of civilization, but the hands on experience as well as the environmental connections here are something else. If you feel comfortable at a far enough distance from home and want a new experience, hands-on learning and being a part of a small community, then Machias is definitely for you!
In three sentences A tight-knit community. Hands-on learning. Different opportunities to explore.

Categories Comments Campus Safety there has not been much of a problem during the time i've been attending UMM. It's definitely a lot safer than most colleges.
Greek Life There are a handful of sororities on campus that I am aware of.
Clubs and Activities There are loads of clubs and activities.
Great for these types of students anyone interested in marine biology or something relating to the land and/or sea.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a daycare center on campus near the fitness center.
What to do for fun the gym/recreation center on campus is quite fantastic. on gamedays, you can often watch the Patriots play in the cafeteria.
Food and Dining One of the popular areas for getting food was shut down due to the building being unfit, so now there is only one place on campus to get food.
Dorm Life I'm a commuter, so I can't really speak too much about this.
Academic Rigor the amount of work for each course is very relatable to the course level. So if you have a three hundred level course, you can expect to have a workload that fits the level.
In three sentences ideal for anyone looking for a relatively small college. perfect for anyone interested in marine biology. very genuine and pleasant faculty.

Categories Comments Greek Life There are many greek organizations on campus. There is Omicron Delta Pi Fraternity of which I am a part of. There is Kappa Alpha Kappa, Phi Tau Phi, Psi Delta, Sigma Chi Lambda, and Kappa Eta
Clubs and Activities There are many different student organizations on campus, we even have the 100% Society which holds the annual Rainbow Ball which is the largest LGBT MOGAI prom north of Boston.
Food and Dining The food is not the best but Aramarks contract is almost up and UMM is looking for someone to take their place.
Dorm Life There are many different options here at UMM. You can have a single room, a double, or a suite. You have the option of choosing your own roommate.
Tips for prospective students Study hard and take the opportunity to participate in events held on and off campus. Go to bed early and get up early because it will make your day much easier.
In three sentences UMM is a fantastic school with amazing teachers who care greatly about their students and their academic success. There is a great marine biology program here that cannot be compared to any other in the state all at a low cost. I highly recommend this school to anyone who may be searching.

Categories Comments What to do for fun In the winter there's a pond, we really get into pond hockey. There's lots of trails in the woods out back to walk through, and down the road a few miles is the Roques Bluff Beach.. Absolutely beautiful!
Food and Dining The cafe food is gross.. But the food down at the galley is pretty good. Typical chicken fingers, burgers, fries, sandwiches, ect.
Dorm Life Everyone here is awesome, they accept you for who you are. But sense it's a small school with about 1,000 kids tops, your friends with everyone. So if you aren't cool with that, it's probably not the place for you.
Academic Rigor I've only gone through my first semester of this school so far, but the courses are very similar to high school in my opinion. And I didn't have a huge work load for outside the class. Very do-able.
In three sentences Machias is a very cute, independent school. It's in a little town, with not much to do other than things within the school. If you don't like having a lot of free time on your hands, this school probably isn't the best.

Categories Comments In three sentences It is a small school in the middle of a small area. It is isolated from almost everything, if you need to go to a large store to purchase something you have to drive almost 2 hours in either direction. It is very welcoming to all types of people.

Categories Comments Greek Life Phi Tau Phi is the best sorority.
Great for these types of students Students who like homey environments will love Machias.
Bang for the buck Affordable.
What to do for fun Go to the beach, explore the trails.
Food and Dining Pretty decent food and the staff is open for suggestions.
Dorm Life I love my dorm and my freshman girl floor.
Academic Rigor Classes are small. Professors know your name.
Tips for prospective students Apply, you will love it.
In three sentences Machias feels like home. It is a small campus in a beautiful area. You will know everyone on campus.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Trails to walk/ride bikes. Soccer field, game room.
Food and Dining This is the only thing I would advise you watch for. The food is good some days.
Dorm Life RA's are good, dorms are clean for the most part, but some can be loud.
Academic Rigor The work is challenging but great expansion of knowledge overall.
Tips for prospective students Do your work on time, and be punctual.
In three sentences This school is great for somebody who want's low student count and is interested in environmental science and/or rec majors. Welcoming campus and great teachers. Good start for anyone.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Their is not much to do for fun around here. In the fall and spring you can go to the beach and take walks, but other then that their is not much. I mostly go to the gym to pass the time of not being in class.
Food and Dining The food here is not the greatest. The cafe tries to make new things, but I always get pizza because the food is fairly gross. The Galley has good food on the other hand and provides more of a variety.
Dorm Life The dorm life here is fairly decent. The restroom facilities are not particularly clean, but I suppose they try their best. The walls are paper thin so you always hear noises from beside you or for people above you. The RA's are very nice and do not really cause much of a bother.
Academic Rigor The academics are not really hard, but they do offer some challenging classes.
Tips for prospective students The school is fairly small and does not have a lot of people that attend. The town of Machias is also a fairly boring place and it is a long ride to the nearest Walmart. I bonus is it is close to the ocean
In three sentences It is a fairly nice school at offers a variety of majors and minors. This school is very diverse and treats people equally. The University has good financial aid and try to help you when needed.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is campus security and I've never heard of any problems. The campus is open to the entire community and that bothers me.
Greek Life There are a number of organizations on campus but I don't fully understand them to say anything.
Clubs and Activities There is clubs on campus but activities aren't that frequent, and you usually have to pay for them.
Great for these types of students Outdoors/Nature people. People who don't mind being bored. People who like small class sizes.
Bang for the buck If you live in the state of Maine you are getting a great deal. This school will get you your bang for the buck. I live in Massachusetts so I get the overpriced out of state tuition which I could go to a private school for, which is why I am transferring to an in state Massachusetts school. If you are out of state don't go here.
What to do for fun On a daily basis there isn't much to do at the school and there is nothing in town. I find myself on the computer or watching TV most of the time. Sometimes there is some events going on and performers are brought to the school which is good. The is a pool and a game room with pool tables and air hockey but this stuff gets boring fast. If your looking for fun you'll probably find it in your classes because you will do a lot of field work, other than that I'm pretty bored.
Food and Dining The food at UMM is okay. On visiting days they make it really good but on all other days it is okay. I think they put way to much salt on it. There is always pizza if you don't like what they are serving. I would describe the food here as a hit or miss, some days it is good while other days it is bad. Breakfast is always made to order though so it is always good and fresh.
Dorm Life The dorms are pretty good here, even the freshman dorms are good and cleaned very frequently. Compared to other schools I have visited I think the rooms are quite large. The wifi in dorms is terrible but there is ethernet jacks on each side of the rooms and they give you free ethernet cables. There is also cable in your room.
Academic Rigor The work here isn't really that hard. As a marine biology major I don't seem to get much course work but you must study. Don't assume you can just go into a test by not studying because you will fail. Take notes even if they are not written on the board.
Tips for prospective students Come prepared for this school, there is no stores nearby to buy school supplies. It rains a lot here in down-east Maine and is usually cloudy. You will have the same teachers for a good amount of your classes so get on their good sides.
In three sentences UMaine Machias is a good hands on school and you will learn a lot. Class sizes are very small, most less than 20 students. The campus is very small though and it's literally in the middle of no-where so there is not much to do.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students who love the outdoors will love UMM. Also students who like the small town atmosphere will enjoy UMM. UMM is a great place for just about anyone and everyone!
Tips for prospective students My tips for prospective students is to be ready to learn. It takes a lot of dedication to get those grades up!
Bang for the buck I really do believe I get all I can at UMM. Along with the schooling, I am learning other skills because of the other activities at UMM. It really is worth every penny spent. I feel as though I have made life long friends and learned life long lesson, both in and outside of the classroom.
Am enjoying being here I love being at UMM. The small town atmosphere helps the students there make friends. I have found myself missing UMM over breaks because I feel as though Machias is where I belong. I have become part of a family, and it seems like everyone else feels the same. There are many activities on campus that everyone is welcome to. We have mens and womens soccer, basketball, and cross country. We also have womens volleyball. There is nothing like cheering on your team! There are many organizations to join as well! I am part of one of many Greek organizations and part of UMM's drama club, Thespis Players. Even though it is a small town something is always going on at UMM!
Am learning a lot The University of Maine at Machias has small classes which are perfect for learning. You really get the help that you need from professors. At UMM, professors know who you are and can help you receive the grades you want to achieve. The professors will take time to teach you if you are struggling in their classes. There is a lot of learning going on. Whenever help is needed it is so simple to go to the professor or even a tutor. Because it is a smaller school, many students also like to have study groups.
