Categories Comments Campus Safety I have never felt not safe on campus although sometimes, it can get a bit eerie at night when all classes are released.
What to do for fun The campus is located right by the Country Club Plaza and the Nelson-Atkins Museum. I like to take breaks sometimes by having picnics on the lawn of the museum or to window shop at the Plaza. In addition, Westport is a great place for nightlife and food.
Food and Dining The dining halls are okay if you eat there once a week however you might develop a food aversion for most of the foods there if you have a meal plan. Dining hall hours are awful (Dinner ends at 7pm) and meals do not roll over. There are a sufficient amount of other food places on campus serving bagels, mexican food, asian food, Chik-Fil-A as well as cafes.
Dorm Life There are two residence halls: Oak Street Hall and Johnson Hall. Both dorms are mediocre however Johnson Hall is more new and in better condition. Dorms are a great way to make new friends.
Academic Rigor Courses can range from easy to very rigorous. It really depends however, studying will always be required in order to succeed in a course.
Tips for prospective students The social life for this school is very minimal. It would be suited for serious students.
In three sentences UMKC is a great school for serious students that are seeking any major. The school is very diverse and mid-size which allows for you to see new people everyday as well as some of the same people. Most of the professors are very friendly and are always willing to aid you if you approach them.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus policy are always driving around on campus, but it is still a good choice to take the extra precaution to be aware of your surroundings. Young ladies should try to walk in the parking garage with friends at night or be aware of your surroundings.
What to do for fun On campus there are different events that you can do. This is why it is important to make friends. Advertisement about on-campus events are not very out in the open, but having friends from different groups can help spread the word of different activities. There are many events held but multiple organizations.
Food and Dining The food is my favorite about the campus! You have so many choices of food to choose from and even if you decide you don't want any of the food from the cafe it only takes 5 minutes to go to the plaza and grab a bite with some friends.
Dorm Life I personally do not stay on campus, but I have friends that do. The dorm apartments are very adorable in the style of the layout.
Academic Rigor My academic major is Biological science with an emphasis of clinical laboratory. UMKC have wonder programs to offer their students.
Tips for prospective students For the incoming students I recommend learning how to balance a social life with your school life. It will also be a good idea to make friends with someone in your courses. I know that making friends have been a life changer for my grades, I say this because everyone obtain information differently and having two brains work together is better than one.
In three sentences The diversity of University of Missouri-Kansas City is to die for! You make friends with new people almost everyday. There's a fair share of every ethnicity on this campus

Food and Dining a good meal plan is affordable
Dorm Life i like the fact that i don't have to share a bathroom with the whole hall way.
Academic Rigor i like the 6yr pharm d. program
Tips for prospective students apply early and do fafsa early for greatest scholarship consideration.

Categories Comments Campus Safety whenever something happen on campus, you immediately get an email. also, there are emergency phone posts everyone. if you're walking alone at night and don't feel safe, just dial campus police and they'll have someone escort you to wherever you need to go.
Greek Life although i'm not in a sorority, they do bring about long-lasting sisterhood. i always see various greeks on the lawn sponsoring all kinds of charities and they look so close and united. could be a great experience for networking too.
Clubs and Activities there are at least 300 different clubs...make sure to join one or two. you won't regret it. this is a great way to make friends who have the same interests as you.
Great for these types of students umkc is perfect for networking and outgoing people. if you're shy, break out of that bubble immediately or you'll be a loner for sure. there's also tons of great study spots for bookworms and academics!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus during the first week of school, participate in as may events as they're hosting! night with the greeks was pretty cool and so were the other events. go to as many events throughout the year too...great way to make friends.
Bang for the buck overall umkc wasn't too bad. there are tons of different clubs and so many people.. my classes were pretty great when i actually went haha!
What to do for fun everyone just walks down to the plaza and hangs or they all go to westport. its great knowing that everyone is no more than a 5-10 minute walk away.
Food and Dining the food was the worst thing ever. i wouldn't get too excited about that. you might want to invest in learning how to cook if you don't already know.
Dorm Life dorm life would've been better for me if the people in my dorm actually participated in events. everyone kind of did thrown thing. bummer!
Academic Rigor most of the professors are pretty enthusiastic about their subject. take money, medicine, and morals for an awesome treat and interesting debate!
Tips for prospective students i was very shy my freshman year. that was the biggest mistake. step out of your comfort zone and try new things!
In three sentences umkc has no much diversity, yet no one really taps into that. if everyone could just mix together and act like a family the school would be much better. the location is amazing though; the plaza is literally in walking distance.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus is pretty well lit and officers are always available for an escort.
Clubs and Activities There's a club for almost everything. There are intramural sports and quite a few campus events that happen every semester.
Great for these types of students UMKC is great for most types of students. Most of the student body is made up of commuter students, and the class schedules are very flexible, so you can tailor your classes to fit around work, taking care of kids, etc.
What to do for fun The plaza is a few blocks away, so shopping, restaurants, and a movie theater are right there. The Nelson-Atkins Art Museum is also pretty close. There are several parks and trails nearby, which are pretty scenic.
Food and Dining Cafeteria food is average, nothing too special. There are a few places on campus to eat, such as Chick-fil-a in the union. Also there are a couple of awesome places just off campus (Pizza 51, Picklemans, Winsteads).
Dorm Life The dorm life is pretty stereotypical. The buildings are well maintained and the staff are nice. However, lots of kids go home on weekends, so it gets pretty quiet.
Academic Rigor My classes have been fairly easy, but I always was a straight-A student in all differentiated classes in high school, so it could just be me. The difficulty varies from class to class and by professor.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of all the campus resources- the gym, the writing studio, tutors, etc.
In three sentences UMKC is in the heart of the city, so there's lots to do nearby. There are tons of on-campus resources available. Campus itself has a great atmosphere, although a little quiet on weekends.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You should always be aware of your surroundings. It's not dangerous on campus, but calling the campus safe may also be a bit of a stretch.
Clubs and Activities Roos on Call! We have volunteer events every month and we love to see new faces! Sojourner Health Clinic, although it fills up quickly, is always a great place to practice your medical skills.
Bang for the buck In State (me): not awful, especially if you are a National Merit Scholar Out of State: extremely expensive (double), and you still get the same services as the in-state students, which are just okay for a state school.
What to do for fun Kansas City is great and you can always find something to do. If you can't, google it and go on an adventure.
Food and Dining The food is expensive and not very good (except on theme days). However, you only have to deal with it for one year before you move off campus.
Dorm Life Some of the RAs are nice, while others are rather strict. The wifi sucks. But it's really nice to live around everyone and have al of your classmates so close to you.
Academic Rigor There is a huge variety. Some classes are very well-taught with very high expectations. Some classes have low expectations. Some classes have high, unknown expectations with teachers who couldn't care about you less. But if you keep your end goal in sight, you'll be fine.
Tips for prospective students If you know you want to to into medicine, the BA/MD program is a great option. You have to be the type of person who can advocate for himself and who can stay on top of everything, everyone here is necessarily very independent. Do well in your academics and make sure you have at least some medical experience before applying.
In three sentences I am a six-year medical student, so this review will only pertain to my program: The rigor of the classes is not terribly difficult, but the volume is what gets to you. Some of the staff is very caring and very competent, but the majority lack at least one if not both of these aspects. However, this is the best path to become a doctor, I love my fellow classmates, and I would not give up my spot for the world.

Categories Comments What to do for fun The campus itself doesn't have a lot of advertised activities but the area of the city is one of the best. Campus is really close to the Plaza, a nice shopping and dining district, the Nelson Atkins Art Museum, Brookside, the Crossroads, and Westport. It's about a 15 minute straight shot from downtown KC.
Food and Dining There is only one campus dining hall, and the hours are not flexible. The food is okay but gets worse once you've been eating it for months. The other dining locations on campus also have weird hours. Most everything shuts down after classes are done. During weekends the dining hall only serves brunch and dinner.
Dorm Life The dorms are nice but small. They are also on the opposite side of campus from most of the educational buildings. They are very secure, which is good because the area is known for not being the safest.
Academic Rigor I can only speak for the Conservatory, but they make sure you are on track to get your degree and be the best in your field by offering difficult classes and encouraging you to challenge yourself.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you make a copy of every document you submit to the administration offices, they are horrible about keeping track of records and may say they've lost your information. Be prepared for a long arduous journey when working with them.
In three sentences The program that I'm involved in (Conservatory) is fantastic. The faculty is clearly invested in our success. Overall, Greek life and Campus organized social events are few and far between.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I always feel very safe. There is a police station a block away and there are officers usually present to patrol. We also have emergency poles where you can make a call to the police by pressing a button if you feel unsafe or want someone to come escort you back to the dorms.
Greek Life I am not currently involved in Greek Life, but I have heard amazing things about all of our sororities and fraternities.
Clubs and Activities We have all sorts of organizations for just about any type of activity you can think of. We also have intramural sports which are a lot of fun.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students who are devoted to their studies but still want a social life. It has a good balance of work and fun.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Not that I know of, but I am only a freshman.
Bang for the buck It is expensive, but you get what you pay for as far as dorm living, food, and academics. Parking is a little outrageous.
What to do for fun The plaza, which is a shopping district in downtown Kansas City, is about a 5-10 minute walk. There are also all sorts of museums and theatres for concerts close by. As far as on campus, the student union and the conservatory always have fun events going on every week.
Food and Dining I love the food and the dining hall staff is very friendly. We have a wide variety of options including vegan and gluten-free options.
Dorm Life Many fun activities to go to if you can find time.
Academic Rigor The classes can be difficult and I have a decent amount of homework. This is definitely a school for very determined and devoted students.
Tips for prospective students It is pricey, but well worth it. The dorms are bigger than most so keep that in consideration. The majors and programs here allow for several areas of emphasis. Don't be afraid to be very specific on what you want to do.
In three sentences I absolutely love the campus and the professors. The class sizes are nice for both lectures and discussion sessions. It is big without making you feel like you aren't important.

Categories Comments Food and Dining The food is very unpredictable. Sometimes it can be pretty bad and sometimes it can be amazing.
Dorm Life The on--housing at UMKC is some of the best I have seen at any school. The dorms are very nice and allow you the opportunity to have your own space while still meeting others.
Academic Rigor The coursework can be very challenging at times, but the class size and teacher relationships allow you the resources to succeed.
Tips for prospective students Stay ahead on studies!
In three sentences I have been at UMKC my entire college career and wouldn't have it any other way. This University has a unique blend of size and diversity that allows for a more intimate experience, but also allows you to meet many kinds of people from different places and backgrounds. Also, the location allows you to not only enjoy life as a college student, but also life as a big city resident.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities The Office of Student Involvement is constantly busy with new events, groups, and organizations. New programs are created to meet changing needs and interests.
Great for these types of students UMKC boasts one of most diverse and respectful student populations in the country. The university was recently recognized as one of the most LGBT-friendly campuses and many student groups place great emphasis on respect and openness.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus UMKC is the home of the Miniature Toy Museum, which students, staff, and faculty can visit anytime for free.
Bang for the buck Campus boasts new buildings all over the place. If you are looking for a great place to study, meet with friends, or grab a cup of coffee, the new student union, Bloch Business School, and Miller Nichols Library have what you need.
What to do for fun UMKC is in the middle of Metropolitan Kansas City and is minutes from the Plaza, Downtown Power & Light, as well as Westport, all terrific places to spend an evening or just an afternoon adventuring. For the sports enthusiast, Kansas City boasts the Royals, Chiefs, and Sporting Kansas City in addition to the UMKC Roos!
Food and Dining In addition to traditional cafeteria fair, UMKC offers several name-brand restaurants and coffee shops for variety.
Dorm Life Student and dorm life provides students exposure to several new and diverse experiences and encourages them to branch out.
Academic Rigor UMKC is a research-based academic institution in the Kansas City area. Faculty must maintain a high level of academic excellence in combination with real-world experience.
Tips for prospective students Take time to visit campus and experience it for yourself. Also be sure to talk to students, staff, and faculty in the departments you are interested in to get real insight into the environment.
In three sentences UMKC has the benefits of a traditional 4-year university, while enjoying the resources of the big city. Students get a terrific combination of high-quality education and real-world experiences through various collaborations. The university is a strong contributor to the Kansas City area through the conservatory, health sciences, and urban campus.

Food and Dining Overall, the food is great. There are always plenty of options and the university is only a few steps away from a several great restaurants.
Dorm Life It's a great experience. My RA was amazing!
Academic Rigor The courses can be challenging, but at the end of the day, the faculty have always been supportive. I feel like the material covered in class is applicable to field.
Tips for prospective students Take the leap! This university is worth it!

Tips for prospective students Keep an eye on your pathways account to make sure there are no unexplainable charges or changes to your aid account.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The school has their own police department on campus, though their presence never seems obtrusive in any way.
Great for these types of students Students from the Kansas City metro area on either the Missouri or Kansas side, or in-state students who don't want to go too far away and are thinking of commuting to school instead of living on campus.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a parade of golf carts every year for Homecoming, which is certainly unusual, and I have always found the hand-painted frescoes--from past students as far back as the 1930s--in Haag Hall to be interesting.
Bang for the buck Tuition is less than $10,000 a year for in-state students, which is less than many other public universities in Missouri, and merit scholarships for students enrolling as freshman or as continuing students are available through the school, depending on the academic department you are in. Out of state tuition is pricier, though.
What to do for fun Not far from downtown Kansas City or the Plaza shopping and dining area, there's plenty to do off-campus, though on a college student budget, those may be once-in-a-while options. On campus, the only major sports programs that tend to be publicized are soccer and basketball, but students can get in free or at a discount with their student ID.
Food and Dining Overall, food options are satisfactory. The four places located in the Student Union have a nice variety of styles (a cafe/coffee shop, Mexican, fast food, and a sandwich shop), and Pizza 51 and Pickleman's (sandwich shop) on Oak St. near the parking garage are high quality while not being too expensive.
Dorm Life I do not personally live on campus, as the financial part of that is nearly as much as the tuition, but if you want to live on campus, the dorms are newly built/renovated and seem to have all necessary things for a college student.
Academic Rigor Academics are dependent upon the department and professor, but I have found almost all mine are very willing to help students in class with questions, and outside of it via their office hours or through email. Some of the more difficult courses also have Supplemental Instruction (SI) for extra instruction which is led by a student who has previously taken and mastered the material.
Tips for prospective students An especially good option for students in the Kansas City metro area who don't want to go far from home, UMKC is very involved in the city. There isn't a shortage of things to do around campus with the various student organizations, there's something for just about anyone. Be sure to take a tour before you apply, since the campus is one of the biggest reasons that convinced me to attend. Also, if you are a potential commuter, make sure to get your parking pass early and arrive on campus a decent amount of time before your class begins to get a parking place.
In three sentences A university right in the heart of Kansas City, UMKC is primarily a commuter school, though the dorms on campus are relatively new and nice, though somewhat pricey. There seems to constant adding-on, including the newest additions to the library, the new Bloch Business School building, and the fabulous Student Union, which is a great place to hang out. Professors and advisors in many departments are willing to help students succeed in the classroom and outside of it.

Categories Comments Campus Safety UMKC Volker (main) campus is basically in the city, so crime rates aren't at their best. Last spring there were 3 robberies on campus, one of them armed. There's also regular crime outside of campus downtown which is only a few minutes from campus. There are blue emergency call towers all over campus in case of an emergency, and campus police should be able to show up at that tower's location in about 1 minute. Ive never personally used them, so I can not verify that. No campus is 100% safe, so I find it comforting if I'm walking around campus at night to have my pepper spray in my hand while I'm out or to have a few people with me.
Greek Life There is a Fraternity and Sorority available for every type of person who wants to join! A mixture of nationally recognized and ones who are just starting out are available, and talking to any member of them will be a great help for finding out info about them if you're interesting in joining.
Clubs and Activities When clubs and organizations put on activities, they are pretty cool, but they have a lot of trouble advertising them. If you want to find something to do on campus, you have to hunt for it.
Great for these types of students Smart! People who don't care about their academics will not do well here. Those who are outgoing will have plenty of things to do as well. There are plenty of clubs and activities to get involved in, if you're into that kind of thing.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We used to have an albino squirrel that everytime you saw him right before an exam, you'd do better on it. But he was hit by a car last spring :(
Bang for the buck I'm in the nursing program, where all of my professors are outstanding, so i guess that's worth the money. However paying $8500 to live on campus is a little bit of a rip-off. Not the best quality living and food could be better.
What to do for fun The plaza for shopping and restaurants. And the movie theatre in the plaza sell tickets for only $6.25! museums, different districts throughout the city, theatres, shopping, there's always something to do, you just have to get out and find it.
Food and Dining Hit or miss in the caf. Sometimes it's really good, sometimes I don't know what I'm eating. But breakfast is always great. Other dining includes Einstein's Bagels, Baja Fresh, Chic-Fil-A, Sub connections. those are always good.
Dorm Life It's alright...could be better for what we pay for it. Laundry rooms are gross. Head of res life is a little mean. Accessibility from dorms to rest of campus sucks.
Academic Rigor This is a professional school! Study hard or you will not make it far. Everyone here is here for one thing: to do their best and get a great job after graduation. No one has time for slackers.
In three sentences The student population at UMKC is very diverse. It's hit or miss when it comes to quality of professors; either incredible or horrible. The on-campus living could be better quality for how much we pay for it.

Categories Comments Food and Dining The first week of semester, the food is delicious, but it drops considerably after that. They do well on special occasions (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter dinners). There's always a salad bar, hamburgers and fries, and a pizza bar.
Dorm Life The dorms are very nice, Johnson Hall is the newest building, and very nice. The dorms are pretty big, with two people to a room and sharing a bathroom with another room. They are separated boys and girls wings, so if you're walking from a boys' wing too late at night, people will assume nefarious things. People definitely feel a sense of community with the people in their building, floor, and wing.
Academic Rigor All the classes are very easy. It's like high school but with more citations.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The school campus itself is safe but as you move further away from campus your safety decreases. I feel if you are aware of your surroundings, conscience about your things, and smart about your choices you will be just fine. The campus police are always around and ready to help. Its smart to walk with a buddy at night and just know what is happening around the city.
Greek Life Wonderful! There are several sororities and fraternities on campus, each unique and each wonderful. When I came to UMKC the first thing I did was join a sorority and personally it was the best choice for me. Participating in Greek life gives you the opportunity to become very familiar with the school, community, and future opportunities.
Clubs and Activities There is a club for anything you could think of and if it doesn't exist than you can make it. That's the great thing about UMKC the clubs and activities are endless.
Great for these types of students Anyone who is willing to work hard and have fun. The school is so welcoming that I feel any type of person could find a home somewhere with someone.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is an albino squirrel that hangs around campus during the spring and the squirrel has become so popular yet hard to spot that it is a treat to see and sort of a fun game to tell someone when you do see it.
Bang for the buck It is a bit pricy but the quality of education is excellent and above and beyond what I ever expected. Amazing professors, insightful classes, and fun and informing opportunities.
What to do for fun Go to the activities provided by the school, organizations of the school, and hang out on campus. The Plaza is near by for some fine dinning and the Sprint Center is not to far for entertainment.
Food and Dining The school has several options including outside vendors, but from my personal experience I have been pleased but I also was not a regular on -campus eater.
Dorm Life Never lived in the dorms
Academic Rigor It depends on your major. The work can be hard and a bit consuming at times but if you are current on your assignments then things are much easier. Also, remember to get a good amount of sleep at night and take frequent study breaks, it helps when you have a large course load.
Tips for prospective students -Keep up with the work and don't fall behind -Find a good balance between school work and relaxation -Get involved, the more involved the more you feel a part of the school -Explore the campus and all of its opportunities - Go to activities provided by the school - Go GREEK ! -Sit in the front of class -Get to know your professors, they are more likely to help you in a time of need if they know you - Have fun but don't cross the line
In three sentences A wonderful school with opportunities, organizations, clubs, and activities for all. Comfortable and accepting environment with the chance to grow. I would advise all friends, family, and acquaintances to attend.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are a bunch of student organizations to get involved in. There is also a lot to do around campus, such as the plaza and the Nelson Atkins.
Food and Dining The food is pretty bad. They have little to no healthy options and everything is either fried or greasy.
Dorm Life I loved living in the dorms. I always hung out in the study rooms with my friends and worked on homework. My roommate and I got along pretty well, so that was great. I would definitely recommend living on campus.
Academic Rigor The classes can be rigorous, but as long as you pay attention, do your work on time, and study it shouldn't be that bad. Also, finding people to study and do homework with helps.
Tips for prospective students -Live on campus -Get involved -Go the SI sessions if a class has them -Don't procrastinate on your work

Categories Comments Campus Safety Some might be concerned that UMKC is in a sketchy part of town, but if you use common sense there is nothing to worry about. Plus there is a police substation on campus to handle any emergencies.
Greek Life There are several greek life options on campus.
Clubs and Activities Many degrees and fields of study host events to get students engaged in future decisions and prepared for life after college.
Great for these types of students Commuter students benefit from this campus location and do not get excluded from all aspects of college life.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We celebrate soccer homecoming instead of football.
Bang for the buck You are getting a top notch education for a relatively low price compared to similar schools.
What to do for fun You're in Kansas City, so everywhere you turn there is something to do. Campus is shockingly close to the Plaza along with many other wonderful places to visit.
Food and Dining There is only one cafeteria on campus; however, there are several cafe's and food joints around campus with reasonably priced and tasty items.
Dorm Life Very few students live on campus, and those who do can pay a nice price for it.
Academic Rigor This isn't high school by any form or fashion, but with effort it is relatively easy to maintain a high GPA here.
Tips for prospective students Do not be afraid to reach out to your professors and advisors, almost all of them are willing to help you out. Start networking with faculty and students early on to ensure that you are not missing out.
In three sentences If you live in the Kansas City area and are looking at a great school for a science/medical major then UMKC is a great option. Most students are commuters, which scare off a lot of students who want to meet new people; however, with the welcome week activities it is relatively easily to network and make new friends. You get the education of a large school with a smaller campus.

Categories Comments Campus Safety One or two break-ins, robberies, and assaults are reported each semester, and they are always reported to the students, faculty, and staff by the campus police via email.
Great for these types of students Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender students.
What to do for fun There are a lot of student organizations, events always going on in the quad or Student Union.
Food and Dining There are many options for eating on campus, even sushi!
Dorm Life I do not live on campus.
Academic Rigor You will see many learning strategies employed at UMKC. The teachers give a variety of assignments and assessments that leave my brain attentive and not overloaded.
Tips for prospective students Enroll early. Classes fill up fast! If you like online classes, make sure you have a good balance between on-campus and online.
In three sentences For students wanting to use the college experience to get a well-rounded education and to have fun, safe experiences, UMKC is for you. At a lower cost than many other universities, UMKC provides awesome, interesting classes that can fit in anybody's busy schedule. When you have a study break or a weekend off, all you have to do is look at one of the many bulletin boards on campus and find out what fun, safe things you can do for cheap and sometimes even for free.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities They say theres 300 clubs which I think there are just that they are never announced when they have meetings. Coming from a premed major, I love their premed society, they really help you with medical school admissions and what to do and everything
What to do for fun Kansas city has a lot to offer. I especially love the plaza; its a great place to hang with friends and go shopping. Other cities around KC are also cool to explore.
Tips for prospective students It's all about academic at this school less on sports. The advisers here for biology and chemistry for any pre-health majors are great. Do not procrastinate, you will fall behind from your first day of class. There are a lot of things to do from what the teachers expect you to do. Everything you do by yourself. Form study groups if you like that. Study, study, study. Never wait the day before to study for an exam, you will fail if you do that. Get help if you need to. They have a great math/science tutoring center in the library. They are really helpful. SI are also helpful if they are available in your class. However, some are not. Like the one in my biology class. Nevertheless, get help AS SOON AS YOU NEED IT!!! But also remember to have a life outside school. Get involved, go to games, and events. First week, theres parties, and free stuff and places. I'm in my first semester and its going great and you just have to do theses types of things to make your college experience worth it.
In three sentences The classes are hard and well academically challenged. The buildings and student union are newly built. I love the diversity of the university.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Police are always here and will accommodate you.
Greek Life It's alive, and they throw some parties at the beginning of the year.
Great for these types of students If you're a returning student, student looking into sciences, or a student who doesn't like to party and would rather go home instead.
Food and Dining Those who work in the cafeteria are hostile (all but a few) and the food is nothing to be excited about.
Dorm Life Nobody stays in the dorm. Also, the dorm coordinators will not let you leave, and they're students! So basically, you have other power hungry students trying to control your situation.
Tips for prospective students I can some everything up in one line: do not come here. I know looking online you can find some pretty harsh reviews and find it easy to just brush them off (at least thats what I did). I don't recommend coming here. Let me just say this example, I meet 6 new friends. 4 out of the 6 of us are planning to transfer.
In three sentences This school is mainly commuters and people from Saint Louis. Many of the professors are nice and caring, but like any other universities some are not. If you are in the sciences, do not expect small class sizes (they told me before I came that the class sizes would not be 300+ people).

Categories Comments Campus Safety In the two years I have attended UMKC, I have not seen any issues that would have police or security there. The security is always around just in case something does happen.
Clubs and Activities There are many different activities going on Campus almost every other week. Clubs are always setting up fundraisers or free things for students. I recently Helped with giving the homeless all of my old phones and other devices I don't use.
Great for these types of students Kansas City Missouri has a mixture of every culture and race there. Everyone is friendly. No matter who you are, you are accepted to all these different locations I mentioned.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus A lot of places Students go outside of Campus would be The Plaza which is walking distance from the School. We have A lot of places to go shopping around Campus even Museums.
What to do for fun There are plenty of things to do to stay involved in school. I am involved in the Student Radio Station and bring a lot of local entertainment to the School. The radio station has only been up for a full year and for me as the Assistant Promoting Director to bring people around Kansas city to the radio station supporting our school, it helps the School, the Artist and myself all together.
Food and Dining I think maybe once or twice a month there is free food somewhere around campus. I also do not have a meal plan but I know that they are reasonable for those who stay on campus. I have ate in the cafeteria before and it felt like heaven eating anything I wanted for the same price.
Dorm Life I am actually not living on the dorms but I do know that they are safe and very clean. There are fun games to play for those living in the dorms. Also they have free food every once in a while.
Academic Rigor When it comes to academics, UMKC is very strict on how carry your grades. If your grades were to fall that semester, expect a report in a few days. They really keep you on your feet.
In three sentences University Of Missouri-Kansas City is one of the best colleges for Business, Nurses, Communications, Science, You name it. Everything is well organized and if you need any help there is always someone around to help.

What to do for fun Clubs, parties, movies, shopping, events, dining, and anything else you can think of. It's KC, everything is fun.
Tips for prospective students My tip is find someone to car pool with or take the bus.. It will save you lots of money. Parking permits are 120 dollars per semester.

Food and Dining Only good during the first week and the occasional specials
Dorm Life I rather live in a residence located off campus
Academic Rigor Study, Study, STUDY!!!!!!!!!
Tips for prospective students DO your research Make sure this is the right school for you Don't expect to party every weekend Stay grounded Sign up for scholarships Know what you plan to do with your degree Take advantage of all opportunities offered to you

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus police are everywhere! Which is great for safety but not so great for parking tickets.
Great for these types of students Students at UMKC are very accepting of all kinds of lifestyles. You will find someone that is interested in the same stuff you are, at least you will if you put yourself out there! I love the diversity at UMKC because there is a large foreign student base that I could not have experienced anywhere else.
Food and Dining Because I lived in the apartments I did not have a meal plan, but when I bought food on campus it was very expensive, so I got frustrated because I could buy the ingredients to make twelve ham and cheese sandwiches for every three that I bought on campus!
Dorm Life I was lucky enough to go straight into the Oak Place Apartments, which although expensive, was very safe and I never had to worry about paying bills or commuting to class. Covered parking was a plus. My upstairs neighbors were noisy, but that is expected in an apartment building so that didn't bother me too much! What did bother me was how loud the rain was on the other side of my outside wall during the nighttime storms.
Academic Rigor The classes are difficult, but the teachers are easily reachable, and truly difficult classes have tutors or student instructors available, and the combination of all of this makes the classes a little easier, but you will definitely still be learning ALOT. I learned more in my first UMKC than in high school.
Tips for prospective students Find a club to be involved in, go to events, go to study sessions with your classmates, study on campus, anything to get to know the people who you will graduate with in four years. Getting to know your teachers are great especially for research and volunteer opportunities. Plan plenty of time to walk to class and don't expect to find a parking spot for your car 5 minutes before class!
In three sentences UMKC is full of fun people, friends, and teachers who want to see you succeed. There is a great balance between serious study times and times to have fun here. However, I do not feel a great sense of school pride here or in the community.

Categories Comments What to do for fun I would recommend participating in extracurricular activities.
Food and Dining The cafeteria at UMKC is welcoming and clean. The food, although not the same as a home-cooked meal, is enough to get a student by.
Dorm Life Although the living was comfortable, the dorm life wasn't active and ended up being a disappointment.
Academic Rigor This university is definitely an academics school more than a social school.
Tips for prospective students If you're going to live in the residence halls, plan on participating in lots of extracurricular activities to keep you busy on weekends. The residence hall wasn't a place I enjoyed spending my time - it lacked in activities to keep me interested and enjoy my time. Also, I wasn't involved in extracurriculars my freshman year and I missed out on a lot of opportunities - friendships, academic help, volunteer work, etc. Finally, be prepared for the stairs of hell - they're quite a workout in the morning.
In three sentences On a 5-star scale, I rate UMKC with 4-stars. The diversity on the campus is great and the school has a fantastic reputation! My only issue was the lack of resident hall activities.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Those who enjoy beauty! and getting a good education.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The trees around campus are beautiful in fall. The buildings are classy and huge and made of stone.
Bang for the buck School is expensive- but I wouldn't spend my money anywhere else. UMKC is a quality school.
What to do for fun There is so so so much to do for fun! I love Kansas City. Near enough to walk is the Country Club Plaza with delicious restaurants and beautiful buildings and fountains to enjoy if you are just wanting to take a walk. Another good choice for a walk would be the super close Loose Park with a lovely pond and lots of green grass for picnics or frisbee. It's a simple bus ride to get downtown and explore the art museum, river market, or the top of the WWI memorial. Kansas City is full of unique coffee shops and quirky stores. For fun all you have to do is set of in any direction to find a lovely adventure.
Food and Dining There are plenty of options on campus! All of them excellent.
Dorm Life I've heard good things about the UMKC dorms- just from friends.I never lived in the dorms but I toured them and they are new and clean.
Academic Rigor I am in the nursing school so classes are not surprisingly hard. However, my teachers are extremely helpful and are determined to help us all succeed.
Tips for prospective students My number one tip is to engage! Ask questions and meet with your teachers. Also, talk with classmates and study together- there is so much to learn! Second tip is to enjoy yourself! Try to visit all of the campus and around the city as well.
In three sentences I love UMKC! The campus is beautiful and in a great location. All my teachers so far have been knowledgeable and helpful- surprisingly so. I'd recommend for anyone and everyone to come here.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is in an urban setting, so average safety is expected. However campus police are always available and there is a very low crime rate on the campus.
Greek Life There is a lot of organizations to choose from, for people of all walks of life. I guarantee you will be able to find the right fit for yourself.
Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs and activities on campus it is easy to get lost in searching for the right one. And if you can't find one for yourself, you can create a new one.
Great for these types of students Great for health sciences, business and engineering major students. Great programs for dedicated students. This school is definitely an intellectuals haven. Most of the students here are hardworking and self motivated. Everyone works hard, and most people are usually studying versus enjoying the party college life. This is definitely a serious education institution.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have a structure which we call the University Playhouse. This is were we used to host something called a Foam Party. Its just music food and drinks in Foam otherwise known as bubbles.
What to do for fun We are a Division I school, so we do have athletics on campus. We have a basketball team and soccer team that have a lot of home events. There are other events on campus that are always fun and offer free giveaways.
Food and Dining There is the traditional Cafeteria but there is also plenty of other options on campus. You will never have to eat the same thing more than once a week. The choices are many and the places great dining choices for friends or solo dining.
Dorm Life It is very open and helps you with adjusting to college life. You have support of the RAs and you start off by meeting someone new who is most likely in the position you are in. This helps a lot when you have to study and go to classes together.
Academic Rigor The professors are state of the art quality. The professors demand great performance and they offer help to whoever asks. They can be very supportive if you value your education and work hard in the classroom.
In three sentences At this school you will be among students who value their quality of their education. UMKC is a school you attend if you are serious about college and not looking to party. It is a place that is easy to adjust to.

Categories Comments Campus Safety No where is completely safe, but there is not many incidents on campus. There is a police substation right in the center of campus. There is help polls located throughout campus if you feel like your in danger.
Bang for the buck Not too expensive. Many scholarships available to students.
What to do for fun There is always an event going on around campus. Being social is the key to fun. There is a theater and some times movie nights be hosted or a talent show. There is always parties to go to. Museums near by and a shopping center.
Food and Dining The food is better than Roman noodles every day. You have a option of creating your own food most of the time. You can grab food to go if you don't have time to sit. There are many establishments around you can eat at if you don't prefer the cafe food.
Dorm Life Dorms are not that bad. The rooms are small, but you have to find a way to create space. A good thing is you only have to share a bathroom with 3 other people or if you get a single room only one other person, instead of 25 others. There is kitchens on almost every floor so you can cook. There is a bunch of study rooms if you dont want to go to the library or stay in your room.
Academic Rigor Most of the professors will work with you. Most actually care about your standing in the class and would like for you to succeed. You will have some professors who just do what they are suppose too but there is always a tutor for what ever subject which is really good.
Tips for prospective students Stay focused, don't get boggled down by all the work. Make sure you keep your grades looking great, it pays off. UMKC have many fun activities to do and groups you can join. It is never really gets boring, there is always something you can do.
In three sentences Not too expensive if you want to save. Free transportation and great food areas. Many activities and diverstity.

Clubs and Activities There are so many different clubs and activities at UMKC. Everyone can find something they enjoy doing or that they are interested in!
Great for these types of students UMKC is great for all different types of students. Students who are very academically driven. We have a lot of prestigious programs at UMKC. UMKC is also great for students who want to live on a college campus or who want commute.

Categories Comments Campus Safety This campus is very safe despite its location in KC. There are always police officers making their round of campus, checking to make sure everything is safe for those there.
Great for these types of students Any students! There are so many different opportunities to explore majors here at UMKC.
Bang for the buck The need an option for a smaller meal plan. I spend a fortune just to have a large amount of it wasted.
What to do for fun Look down! There's always something written somewhere on the concrete with sidewalk chalk advertising people's upcoming events.
Food and Dining I give the places on campus (where you use your flex dollars) a 5 star, and the cafeteria food a 3 star.
Dorm Life Students can be very loud in the halls during quiet hours.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of office hours! Your professors allow you to come into their office one or more days a week to ask questions about the current teachings. DO IT if you're having trouble. Plus, it gives you a more personal relationship with you teacher that you can't get in a huge lecture room.
In three sentences I would give it a 4 star. They should make more meal plan options, but the campus itself is beautiful and the teachers are really easy to talk

Categories Comments Campus Safety The police are quick to respond and there are these machines all over campus where you can press the button to notify the police if you feel unsafe. Some people just use them to have policemen walk them home when it's 2 am in the morning after a major study marathon. It is a dry campus here so there is LESS drinking, of course it is not totally removed. People smuggle it in along with other things. I do find it weird that people aren't allowed to be in possession of or drinking alcohol on campus but can be drunk on campus. The only act of violence I have heard of here was last semester a homeless alumni committed suicide in front of the private library.
Clubs and Activities I'm not a part of any clubs here, but there are many to choose from Ballroom dancing all the way to Anime. I am a full-time undergraduate student and medical student but I still find opportunities to take belly dancing, study Korean, play trumpet, etc. You can create your own clubs here too.
Great for these types of students Those who utilize resources, participate, and can balance study, work, and play would do well here.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus During finals week the Student Union has scream outs at midnight and free food. People do hookah here, but I'd be careful if I were you. People don't seem to realize that is extremely dangerous compared to smoking and also has the added risk of spreading STI's, STD's, VD's whatever you want to call them.
Bang for the buck Since I am part of the 6 year BA/MD program here, it is very expensive for me, but probably saves me in time and money compared to a regular 4 year undergraduate and 4 years of medical school. I don't know much about the expense of colleges, but this school had the some of the cheapest rates in Kansas and Missouri. I think only Washburn and Emporia were cheaper but this school has way more opportunities and many professional schools as well.
What to do for fun The campus is minutes away from the Kansas City Plaza. If you think that's too expensive, there are places with half-prices at happy hour, and $4.50 movies before six. From November through February you can ice skate outdoors downtown Kansas City. The selection of restaurants is amazing. You will find Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Greek, Indian, Italian, Mexican, German, Diners, Fusion, etc. The Art Museum is free. The Zoo is probably 20 minutes or less away. As for art and music, there is a number of venues with great local artists, the Jazz and Baseball Museum, the Blue Room, a new concert hall has been built, the Sprint center has plenty of modern artists showing. If you like to explore and have a car or can make good use of the public transportation, you can find something for you here. Even on campus there is a fully-equipped gym, swimming pool, sauna, and field. The Fine Arts college always have concerts going on whether it is jazz, orchestra, plays, musicals, etc. Movies are played free on campus and STUCO plans fun events as well. For example, in the spirit of Halloween I entered a pumpkin carving contest and costume contest. Keep an open mind and make friends because there are people from all walks of life and religions here.
Food and Dining Due to my academic program, I am required to get a meal plan. The food at the Cafeteria is passable most of the time. If the choices of the day suck, there's always the salad bar, sandwich bar, pizza bar, and dessert bar. The cafeteria is cheap even if you don't have a meal plan and is all you can eat. I do like that the meal plan also comes with a prepaid card you can use at any of the stores and restaurants affiliated with the campus.
Dorm Life I'd like to quote my father, This place is worse than the barracks. I can only speak for the Oak Street Hall, where I room for now. I do not enjoy sharing two rooms and a bathroom with four girls. The walls are thin so you are at the mercy of everyone and their grandma who decides to stay up all hours of the night, run up and down the halls, etc. I guess I should be thankful that we don't share one bathroom per hall, that this is a dry campus, and we do have grace periods where we can switch rooms for free.
Academic Rigor I took Medical Terminology, Functional Anatomy Lecture and Lab, General Chemistry II Lecture and Lab, Fundamentals in Medicine Practice, Learning Basic Medicine Sciences, General Psychology, and Communications 110 in the Fall. I would give this a better score if I hadn't had a bad experience in the Chemistry Department. The majority of the class could attest to an incompetent professor. Although the department did create a parallel class and hired another teacher, I felt they acted too slowly and I feel cheated in grade and learning experience. Other than that, I find that the majority of the teachers here are highly competent, approachable, and reasonable about the courses. The school provides a large selection of academic resources such as Supplemental Instruction, a Writing Center, free and paid tutors, and academic counseling. This Spring, even though it is off season, the school created an Organic Chemistry course specific to my academic program and offers tutors, supplemental instruction and more even though only 100 or so students are taking this course. I have no doubt that this school wants us to succeed.
Tips for prospective students Like with any college, research all the possibilities, be informed!!! I didn't realize I could CLEP out of some classes even the summer before my first year of college until it was too late. I thought that the academic program I attend required me to stay in a 4-person suite, but in reality they don't force you to do that. I could have gotten a single at the beginning of the year but now I am at the bottom of a very long wait-list.
In three sentences UMKC is a mid-sized university in the middle of a mid-sized city. The class size is typically small and personable. This university is full of opportunities in education and continuing education.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Emergency stations are set up all over the campus and campus is well lit at night. UMKC has their own police for the University. Campus police are driving around in the parking garages and parking lots all day and night keeping an eye out. I never question my safety and I have never had a problem.
Greek Life I did not go Greek, but a few of my friends have. They love it. There are always activities going on for the sororities and the fraternities. Also, Greek Life is another way to meet new people and life-long friends.
Clubs and Activities UMKC organizations do a lot for the community. UMKC has clubs that go help the homeless at the local food pantries. Habitat for Humanity makes a difference in the community by fixing up run-down houses. Most of the organizations at UMKC help you succeed academically as well as helping you get a foot in the door to your future career.
Great for these types of students Students who have a keen eye for fashion and/or art will enjoy being only a few blocks from the Country Club Plaza and the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum. Many designer and name brand shops are available at the Plaza, and the Art Museum has many interesting exhibits year-round.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I would not call A Walk in Her Shoes a tradition, but is an event put on by the Women's Center and UMKC Violence Prevention. It is a walk where men and women walk in high heels to protest violence against women. It's always funny seeing grown men walking around in high heels, but all for a good cause.
Bang for the buck UMKC has a small college feel, but has everything a large university has to offer. You definitely get what you pay for. Students can go work out in the Recreation Center for free because it is already included in tuition, unlike a couple surrounding colleges. Tutors at the Student Success Center are also free.
What to do for fun The Student Activity Council has a lot of activities to offer for students. There are also a many organizations, Greek and not Greek, that offer students a variety of entertainment. UMKC Athletic events are also a very fun way to spend the afternoon or evening.
Food and Dining UMKC has a lot to offer, especially in the Student Union. All over campus there are little dining areas offering top line coffees and pastries. In the Student Union there is a coffee shop, a Mexican Restaurant and an Einstein's bagels. The little dining areas offer packaged snacks like chips and cookies, bottled sodas and the catering company's pastries (delicious).
Dorm Life I do not live on campus at UMKC but I have a few friends who do and they seem to really enjoy the dorms. They always appear safe (secured access for tenants only), and always look clean from the hallways.
Academic Rigor College should be challenging, not a walk in the park. The instructors challenge their students to use their brains and think on their feet. At the same time, the same instructors offer their help to all students all of the time.
Tips for prospective students Use the resources provided. There are tutors and help offered in the new Student Success Center. UMKC does not set its students up for failure; there are many resources offered to help one succeed.
In three sentences UMKC is a culturally diverse campus with much to offer. With many majors and programs to offer, an undecided student could explore many avenues. The Student Activity Council always has activities going on, as well as the Greek organizations, one could not get bored.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are always police officers and security roaming around to make sure the campus is safe. They also make themselves available, so if, for instance, you felt uncomfortable walking from a class to the dorms at night, they would pick your. Your safety is a priority at this school.
Great for these types of students Good for those that want a small school setting and a chance o get a quality education in a place that has an urban feel to it,
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Apparently, Epperson House is a haunted building on campus, and there have been reports of a piano playing at night and apparitions walking through the halls.
What to do for fun On campus there are a lot of clubs that you can join and events that different organizations host, such as movie nights and dancing lessons. There is also the Plaza and Crowne Center around campus, which allows for shopping and eating and fun when you don't want to stay in the dorms on a weekend or when you have free time.
Food and Dining The food is average at the cafeteria, but there are other places for you to eat on camp ash as Chick Fil A and Einstein Bagels. Depending on the meal plan you get, you get money to spend at these restaurants, so when the food at the cafeteria is not up to par, you still have other options available to you.
Dorm Life Dorm life is great. There are a lot of floor meetings, just so that you know what's going on around campus and in the dorms. The RA's are friendly and helpful, especially if you just need someone to talk to, or need advice on something. The Residence Hall Council is also very active in create events that allow you to meet new people.
Academic Rigor Depending on your major, the workload can be intense. From the teachers that I have so far, their goal seems to be to actually make sure that you learn something, so there will be a lot of lecturing and readings to do, but it won't be busy work but will be things that can help on the test or give you some extra credit points.
Tips for prospective students If you want to apply here, make sure that you follow the deadlines are fully. Not being efficient and on time can cost you financial aid money, a spot in the dorms and even a possible hold on your account which can lead to you getting the bottom of the barrel when registering for classes. Also, take part in campus tours. The campus a big enough where the tours give an exceptional view of what life is like at UMKC, so definitely take advantage of that opportunity.
In three sentences This school is a good school for those that want a small school setting, and is good for commuter students. It's big enough where there is always a chance to meet people, but small enough that there is no chance of you getting swallowed up by a crowd. The teachers are great and provide help to those students that actively seek of their help.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus security officers are off-duty KCMO police officers. There's always a lot of campus personel and students around.
What to do for fun There's lots of places to shop, hang out, and go see a movie right around campus. The Plaza is right down the street. The Power and Light District is about 15 minutes away. Other places in the area include the Legends, Downtown, Westport, and Oak Park Mall. There's also an Arts District, the Kauffman Center, and Folly Theater for art and music.
Food and Dining Cafeteria food is iffy no matter where you go, but UMKC has lots of on-campus options, such as Chik-Fil-A and Baja Fresh. They also have two coffee shops.
Dorm Life I am a commuter student, but I have heard a lot from fellow students on dorm life. It seems as though there are always things to do, and once you find a group of friends you will never lack for activities.
Academic Rigor There are certain classes that are always going to be hard no matter where you take them (for example, Statistics or Calculus). But UMKC also offers easier classes. Try to schedule a mix so that you won't feel overwhelmed.
Tips for prospective students Get as many General Education classes as you can out of the way before you go to college. This allows you to take the classes you want alongside your required classes.
In three sentences UMKC is a great school for all kinds of students. It has a large diverse population that allows for many different viewpoints. UMKC also allows for flexibility within your major.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Constant police presence on campus.
Clubs and Activities Many options.
Bang for the buck All major universities are rediculously priced any more. This one is as good as the rest.
What to do for fun UMKC is very good at providing many options for student entertainment.
Food and Dining Good cafeteria options.
Dorm Life Buildings look nice and new but honestly wouldnt know because I live off campus.
Academic Rigor KU was slightly more demanding.
Tips for prospective students Try to get as many free grants and scholarships as you can, and utilize all the online help the university provides to expedite your learning experience.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is campus PD who are actual cops and safe boxes so that if something is going on you will be protected. For a university in the middle of a large city I've never felt more safe.
Greek Life They have 4 national sororities 1 local sorority and 5 fraternities as well as a few different multicultural fraternities and sororities.
Clubs and Activities They have all kinds of clubs for every major field they have they also have a Greek life if that's something that strikes your interest.
Great for these types of students They are adding a new business building to the block school of business so if your any type of business major this university would be perfect for you because everything is becoming so advanced.
Bang for the buck It is extremely affordable for an undergrad education. I was looking at KU when I was in high school and umkc is half of what KU would have cost and I get to save even more money because I get to live at home.
What to do for fun You are in the city so there is lots to do. You are steps away from the plaza which is an amazing shopping district, if you are of age there is the power and light district. Kansas City also has 3 major sports teams and those games are always fun to go too.
Food and Dining I ate here a few times. It was just okay normal caf food.
Dorm Life I didn't live in the dorms but my friends seemed to like it. The dorms are fairly new so you don't have to worry about old nasty buildings.
Academic Rigor I have loved and disliked some of the professors but that are all willing to work with you on anything you need help with or don't understand
Tips for prospective students It is an urban university so you do have to keep that in mind. One way you go into a really nice neighborhood and the other way you are in a not very good neighborhood. As long as you are openminded to everything this university has to offer you will do amazing.
In three sentences It's a really good commuter school which is what I do everyday. They work really hard to keep everyone involved. They also have an amazing business school.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is very safe here. We have a gated garage for the apartments. The security is amazing.
Clubs and Activities I am not in any clubs in school but I am the youth leader at my church.
Bang for the buck I work as a resource teacher at a preschool and babysit children of many families during the week as well. I love searching for scholarships so that I can continue my education and become a teacher one day.
What to do for fun I love to dance and listen to music on my off time. Going to the movies and exploring the city is what makes me happy the most especially when my family and friends are with me.
Food and Dining I cook most of the time but I also like to explore different restaurants with my friends. The food places on campus are delicious and well priced.
Dorm Life I live in the two bedroom apartments and my roommate is great.
Academic Rigor The only difficult thing about attending college is balancing everything important to you out so that life wont be too stressfull. I pray and work harder everyday. I have came this far and I'm not stopping.
Tips for prospective students Go for what you want in life no matter how stressfull or hard it gets. It's rewarding in the end. You'll be glad you did it!
In three sentences University of Missouri Kansas City is a great school to prepare you for an amazing future. Wise and successful teachers are there to help you along the way, guiding you to becoming a professional in your dream career. There is much diversity and I love that the most about this school.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are always police on campus, and I have never heard of any crimes occurring on campus. There are emergency call centers placed at strategic points across the campus, and it is well lit at night. Each building has a member of the police force on duty at all times, and so their presence is very obvious on campus.
Greek Life UMKC has a very active Greek life, and there are many sororities and fraternities on campus. I have never been to any meetings, so I do not have very much information about the organizations. However, most Greek life organizations at UMKC are focused on developing the local community, so they are not very stereotypically party party party organizations.
Clubs and Activities UMKC has many student organizations, most of which are very active and beneficial. By joining these organizations, you can gain leadership experience and pursue your interests, as well as have a good time with friends. I am currently a member of one student organization, but there is no limit on how many you can join.
Great for these types of students Motivated, self reliant students or students who want to attend school while working a job and developing a life outside of school. UMKC is very flexible and it would be very possible to lead the life of a non-student while attending school if you took less classes. Because it is a commuter school, most students do not identify themselves as students, but more as people with jobs who are seeking to improve themselves.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a foam party every fall that usually turns the campus into a mass of foam covered people. There is also an international student olympics event, which is very popular and has a huge turnout.
Bang for the buck UMKC is what I like to call a real school for real students. It is very affordably priced and offers great financial aid.
What to do for fun Joining a student organization is a good way to make new friends; I met most of my friends my first year at a meeting for the radio organization at UMKC. Even if you do not stick with a particular group, it is definitely worth attending meetings to meet other students. Otherwise, I would suggest talking to your fellow classmates and finding activities that reflect your interests. UMKC has thriving arts and sports communities, and there are always events going on.
Food and Dining UMKC has a cafeteria that is mostly used by employees and students living on campus. The food is pretty typical of what you would expect to find in an American cafeteria; they usually have pizza and hamburgers daily, but they also have an extensive salad bar and exciting rotating menu options daily. There are various fast food restaurants and coffee shops all over campus with a variety of dining options-these restaurants are placed in really convenient places and offer mostly healthy food choices (there is a sushi place in the library!)
Dorm Life UMKC is a commuter campus, and so the dorm life is not very active. I never lived in the dorms myself, but I visit them frequently. The rooms and buildings are very nice, new, well kept, and are conveniently located. UMKC is currently working on providing exciting student events, but it is really up to each individual student to seek out activities and friends. Kansas City is thriving, so there is never a dearth of things to do.
Academic Rigor UMKC is not academically rigorous. Upper level classes do require more time and include more difficult homework, but if you are a hard working student, you will do fine. I would not suggest UMKC for students who are interested in a difficult and rigorous academic life; you can make it rigorous for yourself by taking more classes, but if you want an academic challenge, you should look elsewhere. The general education courses are typically pretty easy, but your major course will be more challenging and exciting. UMKC has some really amazing instructors, so I would make sure to take classes that interest you and you might find a great mentor in the process.
Tips for prospective students UMKC is not very difficult to get admitted to, but if you are a motivated student, you can take advantage of its many scholarship/leadership opportunities. By doing so, you can build your resume so that you are appealing to graduate schools. It may not seem very prestigious to graduate from a state school, but UMKC can offer some very exciting opportunities that will really help you change and grow as a person. I was never very interested in participating in on campus events or being associated with any particular program, but I was presented with many opportunities to stretch myself my first year.
In three sentences UMKC is a hidden treasure of Kansas City and the University of Missouri system. Although it has faults, as all colleges do, it has many prestigious academic programs and provides many opportunities to its students. UMKC allows students to realistically work towards the future and provokes them to take their own careers and futures into their own hands.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There's emergency phones all over the place, in parking lots and garages and outside buildings. I often see campus police driving around and through the campus. The campus police station is open 24/7. However, just off campus the neighborhoods can be rough, so just be aware of that.
Clubs and Activities There is a great amount to choose from...you have a lot of chances to plug in.
Great for these types of students Great campus for all types of students,I think. And on campus, you'll see all types!
Bang for the buck Overall, pretty good. I think the academics are worth it, and the campus life isn't bad.
What to do for fun The recreational facility/gym is well-outfitted. There are many student organizations and clubs to join that do things on and off campus. There are clubs, bars, shopping, and restaurants all close by,on the plaza or around near campus.
Food and Dining There are lots of great resaurants on campus and just off campus. The coffee houses on campus--in the Student Union or in the Miller-Nichols library, for example--are great! And of course, the Plaza is not far, so there are lots of good restaurants there, too. The campus food variety ispretty wide--fast food, organic food, healthy options, bagels, deli sandwiches, sushi, bakery goods. Anything you want, you can probably get on campus.
Dorm Life I do not live on campus, so I do not know first-hand how good or bad the dorm life is.
Academic Rigor I feel that I learn a lot in my classes. The professors are competent and knowledgeable, and willing to help with questions inside and outside the classroom. Coursework is definitely harder the farther you go, but there's a LOT of academic resources to help you understand coursework you're having trouble with.
Tips for prospective students If you are applying for scholarships or submitting a FAFSA or applying for any financial aid, keep up with the financial aid office! Call them, email them, go in to see them. In my experience, they have been slow to respond to my questions and not very good at organizing all my application materials, often mixing up or losing some of my material. So don't be shy to keep on top of them and asking about your financial aid status.
In three sentences The campus is very pretty and aesthetically pleasing. The Miller-Nichols Library is amazing! The faculty and staff seem mostly competant and willing to help, although the financial aid department may be slow.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I do not walk across campus by myself after dark without holding my pepper spray in one hand, and my phone in the other. It's the city, and it's right next to the Troost area. I haven't heard of any crime taking place on campus, but you still have to watch out for yourself.
Greek Life One thing I was surprise to find, upon coming to UMKC, is the vast involvement with Greek Life. The fraternities and sororities are not nearly as large as they are at bigger universities, but the percentage of students involved in Greek Life is still pretty high.
Clubs and Activities There's a plethora of student organizations on campus, just waiting for you to join. UMKC Roo Groups is one way to figure out how to get involved!
Great for these types of students Science and pre-health majors, as well as music and dance majors. (The Conservatory is one of the top-ranked in the country.)
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus UMKC is the home of the Roo-bot, a robot system in Miller Nichol's Library that will locate books for students, as opposed to having them search through the books manually. The university also holds the world record for having the most people doing the robot dance all at the same time.
Bang for the buck The cost of tuition includes access to many convenient amenities: well-revered newspapers, public transportation, a top-notch workout facility, and more.
What to do for fun UMKC is located right next to Kansas City's Country Club Plaza and the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum, and is just a short drive away from the Kauffman Performing Arts Center, Power and Light District, and Sprint Center. Needless to say, there's never a dull weekend at UMKC.
Food and Dining The UMKC cafeteria is awesome; it's an all-you-can-eat buffet-style, with vegetarian, gluten-free, and fresh-cooked options at every meal.
Dorm Life I'm currently a Resident Assistant at UMKC and can honestly say that my fellow RAs all take their job very seriously. There are only two residence halls on campus, though, and the residents get pretty rambunctious. But overall, I highly recommend the residential life experience.
Academic Rigor I'm currently in the School of Education and, much to my demise, have not found my coursework to be strenuous in the least. I have yet to start my Teacher Education classes, so maybe things will become a bit more challenging.
Tips for prospective students If you're not sure what you want to do yet, explore! UMKC has an extensive variety of majors to choose from, so you don't have to feel trapped with the first degree program you decide to pursue.
In three sentences The campus is very beautiful and has plenty of peaceful places to go to study. The students are both friendly and diverse. If you're a science or pre-health student, you'll fit right in!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Personally, I have never experienced any issues with safety while on campus. None of my personal items have ever been stolen, my car has never been broken into at night or during the day, and they also have campus police who not only patrol in cars, but on bikes. Around the campus they provide access to emergency assistance with phone posts on campus, as well as having the police station conveniently located in one of the parking garages.
Great for these types of students The University of Missouri-Kansas City is great for non-traditional students, students who would prefer to live off campus, those looking for a sophisticated urban setting, and for the student who likes to be academically challenged.
Bang for the buck Because the campus is located in the urban area of Kansas City, MO, students have access to activities not only on campus, but off campus as well. There is the Kansas City Power and Light District, Country Club Plaza shopping center, the Nelson-Atkins Museum, The American Jazz Museum, Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun theme parks. There are a myriad of activities to engage in within the city if you aren't able to join a club.
What to do for fun If you are looking to be active on campus there are sorority and fraternities in which one can pledge to become a member. There are also intramural sports and clubs to partake in if you are looking for something more specific to your interests.
Food and Dining I am not sure of any dining halls on campus, however, there is a Chick-fil-a at the student center. There is also an Einsten Bros. in one of the academic buildings, which makes it convenient when going from class to class. There is also a cafe in the library, so if you need an extra energy boost before studying, you can purchase food and drinks.
Dorm Life Unfortunately, I am not able to stay on campus because I am a non-traditional student, however, they do have housing available for more traditional students. Although the housing is either brand new or newly renovated, I heard it is rather expensive.
Academic Rigor As a transfer student in my last year many of my classes have been upper-level, so they have been more challenging. The professors make you accountable for your work and I love how they have us engage in research studies. Professors also enhance writing skills through writing assignments on a regular basis.
Tips for prospective students Prospective students should have some form of transportation available if they wish to leave the campus. Kansas City does have the Metro bus system in which one can use if they aren't able to drive/own a car.
In three sentences The University of Missouri-Kansas City is very diverse in both students and faculty. The classes are small and the professors are always willing to help. This is a great school to attend if you want an urban surrounding.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus police is very reliable and is quick to respond. You can call them for any problem, big or small.
Greek Life The Greek community at UMKC is small but united. Joining Greek Life is one of the best ways to meet people on campus.
Clubs and Activities There are clubs for just about anything. And if you want to start a new club, all you have to do is find a faculty advisor.
Great for these types of students UMKC is great for determined and independent workers. To be truly successful, you have to be motivated.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is an albino squirrel on campus. If you see it on a test day, you'll get an A!
Bang for the buck There are scholarships available based upon ACT score and GPA, but there aren't many other scholarships. The Trustee Scholarship offers a full ride, but only to about 8 students each year. In-state tuition is available to any student from the KC metro area.
What to do for fun Kansas City is full of fun things to do! Students love spending time on the Country Club Plaza, at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, and Jacob L. Loose Memorial Park. UMKC is nestled in the heart of Kansas City, and there is never a dull moment.
Food and Dining The food is greasy and not especially fresh. They make great paninis, though!
Dorm Life The Staff in both dorms are very friendly. Both of the dorms on campus are less than ten years old and come equipped with a microwave and mini fridge in each room.
Academic Rigor Teachers want students to master the material, but they are not unrealistic in their expectations of their students.
Tips for prospective students Be proactive! Teachers want to hear from you and are eager to help if you have questions. The Student Success Center offers free tutoring and has a student-lead Supplemental Instruction program, which has been shown to raise grades by about one letter grade.
In three sentences UMKC is the only research-based urban university in the Kansas City metro area. There are undergraduate research opportunities even for freshmen. This university offers a high quality, comprehensive education.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are blue emergency poles spread throughout the campus. Clicking the single red button will automatically call campus police. The buddy buddy system is strongly encouraged here. Personally, I carry mace just to be safe.
Greek Life There is a wide variety of fraternities and sororities. It seems like a good way to get involved. I think I might join one myself.
Clubs and Activities There is a club for almost every major. They have a criminal justice and criminology club, Activies and program council, robotics club, ect.
Great for these types of students This campus is good for students who easily get distracted. They will have no choice but to study and be focused. Everyone here has tunnel vision and you wont make friends unless you're involved in a campus organization.
Food and Dining UMKC has an all you can eat buffet. They serve the best omelets in the mornings. On weekends the cafeteria opens at 11:00am, that's too late for me personally. Weekdays their open from 7am-7pm (close too early). There are mini cafes and restaurants spread throughout campus as well.
Dorm Life It's convenient because you have easy access to most things. You get know more people. Nice place to relax. Damage fees can be easy to get.
Academic Rigor Acedemic is something you must be effecient with. Catching up is a hard thing to do here. Must study 3 hours for ech class you have.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Those planning careers in Health sciences (Nursing, Medicine, Dental, Pharmacy, etc.) would really benefit from attending this university. Also the Bloch School for Business Management, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and Public Administration is consistently ranked among the top in the nation. The school for Urban Planning and Design is newly accredited and is an exciting new program.
Bang for the buck I would say that all the construction and development that has happened over the past three years (and will for the next decade as currently planned) have really proved beneficial and resourceful for students, a lot more so than I had anticipated. The academic departments are all filled with sharp staff and caring professors. The material taught is current and applicable for the present day. They really try to prepare you for a changing world. The university administration could definitely use some attention. There is a lack of communication between themselves and other departments and the university's policies, procedures, and rules are not very clear and vary depending on who you talk to. Student involvement on campus is steadily rising and will continue to do so. The website itself is a maze. Most of the links I click on are outdated and just take me to an error page. Some pages have not been updated since 2007. But overall I loved my experience here. The campus is small enough that you really get to know a lot of people you see on a regular basis and interact with them your entire time here without having to search through crowds to find them.
What to do for fun Getting involved is crucial for those who seek a fulfilling college experience. The first week of school is really when student organizations promote themselves and information about them is easy to find. Since UMKC is in the heart of a metropolitan area there are not a lot of student focused businesses in the area, so the various programs and activities put on are the first step in the door for connections in the community to better social events. The sports teams are hit and miss whether there will be a large student crowd or not. There is no consistency there, just like there win-loss record.
Food and Dining I hate food and dining around campus. The company that was contracted tries hard, but it is very apparent that the food is of poor quality. I also hated how there was only one cafeteria for students with meal plans and it is a little ways of a walk from the residence halls and is not always open at the most convenient hours. The food court in the student union is decent but nothing to right home about. The most frustrating part of the whole food and dining experience is the monopoly the one food service provider has over the entire campus. If your organization wants to host an event with food you are not allowed to bring food in from an external vendor, and they deal you a double blow by charging outrageous prices for their event catering options and offer very little variety on packages. I have had meatballs and cheese platters for four years and would like to bring in some one else who is a little bit cheaper and of my choice. I fear they will take away our ability to bring a sack lunch on campus next.
Dorm Life Residential life has been increasing the past few years. There are two residence halls and one university owned apartment building that are very stylish and in good shape. There is 24/7 security around the entrances of these buildings and the campus police routinely monitor the area. I always felt safe in the residential halls. There is also a brand new parking structure between the three buildings that is very nice, and one of them is right next to the student union. One downside is the price. They are a lot more expensive than other campuses (this could mainly be due to the location in an urban area) and do not offer a cheaper option for students. The other downside is that they are the furthest buildings away from the quad and other buildings where classes take place. So walking around campus can take a while.
Academic Rigor Almost all of my classes have challenged me to think critically about their subject of study. A lot of the general education requirements are a lot more stern and professional than other colleges. I feel that it is this way because during your first and second year of school all the pre-professional health sciences students (Pre-med, Pre-pharmacy, Pre-nursing, etc.) are required to take the same general education requirements as the rest of the students and thus the professors hold everyone to a higher standard. As you get into your third and fourth year and start taking more specialized classes in your department you really get a chance to know and build relationships with other students in your department. The one negative I would say about the Academic Rigor is that the outlined course path for credits you must complete for graduation does not help students prepare for graduate schools and beyond. That is one area that could use a lot of improvement. However all my professors are extremely approachable due to small class sizes and often one professor teaches multiple courses throughout the department so you really have a chance to connect with them.
Tips for prospective students UMKC has been a great fit for me, however I know it is not right for everyone. The majority of students involved on campus are in the various professional health sciences programs, and they can often over-shadow the other disciplines. I am an economics major and am primarily friends with pharmacy students. If you want to succeed at UMKC and really get a full satisfaction from your university experience then you should get involved on campus, early. Also, moving into the residence halls really helps you socialize with other students and network for study groups. Utilize the resources that campus has available for you. The career center and office of student involvement, for example, are really supportive and help you connect with student organizations and part time jobs. I know you have heard all of this before, but I can tell you after being involved for four years, there are no substitutes to paid professionals whose job it is to help you.
In three sentences UMKC is currently modernizing their Rockhill (primary) campus and is working hard to increase resources and opportunities available on campus to help prepare students for a ever-changing work climate. It is trying to increase the student involvement on campus and really strengthen student organizations. Every academic discipline within UMKC is expanding and climbing national university rankings.

Dorm Life the dorms are well kept and up to date, and everybody is really cool to meet and all are friendly
Academic Rigor the classes are small so you get more one on one time with the professor, if you have any sort of doubt they will always help you when they can.
Tips for prospective students Really think about what you want to do, think about what you enjoy. if you still can't find anything the university has resources for you and will help you declare a major because they don't want you to waste your money.
In three sentences I would rate this school a 10. I love it, its in an urban setting. If you go here you get big campus lifestyle with that small campus feel.

Categories Comments Food and Dining I do not regularly buy food on campus, except for the occasional chicken sandwich from Chick-Fil-A or bagel from Einstein Bros. Both are delicious, as I assume are rest of the food and dining areas too!
Dorm Life I have not lived on campus since I started at this college. However, I have seen pictures of the dorms and they look very well kept.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to keep very organized by keeping a 3 ring binder for each course. Also make sure to print out a copy of each syllabus and class schedule in case you have questions about assignments at any time. I would also make sure to print out all PowerPoint presentations discussed in class prior to the class if available on Blackboard.
In three sentences The University of Missouri-Kansas City is a wonderful college to attend, inside and out. With the beautiful architecture of the buildings and the cleanliness of the classrooms, this college has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. This school has fantastic programs, not to mention one of the best nursing programs in the country.

Categories Comments Campus Safety UMKC is an urban campus but it sports a fully accredited and trained POLICE force, not rent-a-cops!
Greek Life Greek life is a big part of campus but it is by no means the soul of UMKC, so if it isn't for you it won't be overwhelming.
Great for these types of students ALL TYPES!!! We have an extremely diverse campus and it is something we take great pride in.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Epperson House is one of the top haunted mansions in the country and just so happens to be one of our houses on campus!
Bang for the buck For what tuition costs and the actual educational value of UMKC, it's pretty darn great!
What to do for fun JOIN A CLUB!!! There are so many on campus and if you can't find one you like, you can start your own! There is even a Dance Dance Revolution club.
Food and Dining There are plenty of retail food shops on campus if the cafeteria doesn't seem very good to you. But the caf. is working on building a healthier and more appetizing menu. It also sports an awesome to-go line if you can't stay for a meal!
Dorm Life Residential life on campus can be a little cramped and a little expensive, but there is a great community on campus and it really is a great way to meet people, especially if you need a study buddy.
Academic Rigor There are some general education or large basic classes that aren't as in depth or rigorous as others but this university by no means has gimme degrees that don't require effort.
Tips for prospective students Get involved!!!! There is nothing worse than working all day or attending class all day and then just going home and not socializing. There is so much to do on this campus, so go get involved!
In three sentences UMKC is a great university if you are looking to be a part of a large, small campus. It is small enough for you to really get involved and meet a lot of people, but large enough where you still meet new people wherever you go. It has amazing academics that are often times overlooked because of the reputation of its larger sister school, Mizzou.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Diverse!
Bang for the buck One of the things I love the best about UMKC is it's affordability. UMKC is very affordable and every penny is definitely worth it!
What to do for fun Since UMKC is located in the middle of the city, we are very close to the Country Club Plaza where there is much to do, from shopping, to dining, to fun!
Food and Dining Though I did not live on campus, I had the pleasant opportunity to eat in the cafe and it is amazing! There is much variety and just about anything that you are craving!
Dorm Life I did not have the opportunity to live on campus, however, from what I have heard, the dorm life is amazing!
Academic Rigor UMKC is a school that is large enough for the diversity and college feel but is also small enough that one-on-one interaction with the professors is definitely attainable. This makes the academic rigor a little easier to work with, though it is not at all exhausting.
Tips for prospective students UMKC is definitely the perfect school if you are interested in diversity. I have also had an awesome experience finding the support I needed to continue to be successful in reaching my goals.
In three sentences The University of Missouri - Kansas City, or UMKC, is an amazing place to be! Everything about it, from the ambience, the teachers, the people, and the diversity, is amazing! UMKC is the place to be to find people to support you in your educational journey, while also having fun!

What to do for fun Attending games held in the university and theater performances are great activities to spent times with friends or to meet new people.
Food and Dining The cafeterias and dining places are great they are very comfortable places to study, also the food is ultimately good.
Academic Rigor The professors I have met have been very nice, and helpful in caring for our success in their class and in our career.
Tips for prospective students Study hard, and have your goals clear in your mind to make them your first priority even through the hard times.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus police are everywhere and you can just push the button on the blue boxes and they come immediately.
Great for these types of students This place is INCREDIBLE for medical students. NO where else in the country will you be allowed to see patients when you are a freshmen undergraduate student.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Paint party at the beginning of the year.
What to do for fun We go to the Plaza which is across the street or we go down to Power and Light. Downtown KC is really fun.
Food and Dining The cafeteria was really nice. You will miss it once you move out.
Dorm Life Dorms were a lot of fun, except there were a lot of fire alarms.
Academic Rigor The work is hard for six year medical students but it is not impossible.
Tips for prospective students If you are interested in the medical field, then the six year program here is your best option. Take college credit classes in high school and you will be living a normal college life here. If you want to be a doctor, then best do it in six years.
In three sentences UMKC has one of the best medical programs in the country. It allows students to get hands-on practice in the hospital your very first week here. The numerous activities and the people on campus are extremely helpful and fun to be around.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The police station is moving right onto the middle of campus this coming fall so that will really help to have the extra security so close by. I always felt safe on campus, but having them this close is just an extra security blanket in a way.
Clubs and Activities There is so much to do at UMKC. You just have to find out what you like and then get plugged in!!
Bang for the buck It is a little pricey and the price is continually rising but it is a good school and if you were to get awarded scholarships, it would definitely be worth your coming.
What to do for fun The are plenty of on campus clubs to join and the new student union was just recently built along with restaurants so there are options on campus. Also, the Country Club Plaza is within walking distance and there are plenty of shops and restaurants there as well. It's a great place to just hang out with friends. Parks are also not too far away and are fun to go to when the weather is nice and with the museum right down the street.
Food and Dining The food started out great but became just alright as the year went on. I will say that it was one of the better cafeteria's that I have eaten at but when it comes down to it that is all it was-it definitely was not a 5-star restaurant. With that, I was never without a meal and the buffet style was great along with the extended hours to eat around your personal schedule.
Dorm Life The dorm is fun. Something I definitely wanted to experience and was glad I got a chance to at UMKC. They also offer on campus apartments which is where I chose to live my second year and it was similar to dorm life but a little more private and personal although the community feel was still there for you if you wanted it.
Academic Rigor The classes are tough but not impossible. Just do your work and if you are struggling, go talk to your professor-they want to help you. The school is not so big that they don't have time to invest in making sure that you are understanding. There are also tutoring and extra helps labs available if a student needed extra help.
Tips for prospective students Go talk to a guidance counselor-they helped me make some hard decisions and were very patient with me while I decided. They are experts are helping students make choices during this transitional time whether it be from high school or transferring in from a different college.
In three sentences I absolutely love UMKC! I loved it for many reasons the very first time I stepped on campus and to this day am still so thrilled to be here. This is the kind of school were the advisers, administration and teachers really want to help you succeed and get all you can out of your learning experience.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Visit the Plaza, Westport or downtown. The Nelson Atkins Museum is close by, so are other art museums. The Jazz district at 14th and Vine is fun (definitely try The Blue Room with its live music).
Food and Dining The company they use is Sodexo: very hit or miss.
Dorm Life Very clean, new rooms. Parking is limited and a constant struggle.
Academic Rigor The 4 stars are as concerns the Conservatory. The academic rigor in classes I've taken such as English and Political Science receive 2.5 stars.
Tips for prospective students Definitely order books online, the bookstore in unorganized.
In three sentences My main course-work is in the Conservatory of Music and Dance, which is excellent in many areas. The faculty is experienced, and I feel challenged by them daily. The main problem I see with the University as a whole is a lack of organization and timeliness in the main offices and the bookstore.

Categories Comments Food and Dining The food here is not as good as home cooking, but then again when is it? There are times where they have good food and other times you are guessing at what you are eating.
Dorm Life The dorm life here isn't too bad. The RA's are all really helpful and fun to be around. Since living in the dorms I have made so many friends from living there. I have found people that are awesome roommates. If there is a problem with your roommate or suitemates the staff at the halls are really helpful in resolving them.
Academic Rigor The academics here are good. Being a science major I am in some hard classes, but there are a lot of ways that the school helps you to be successful in hard classes.

Great for these types of students a great place to hang out for students no matter if you are a commuter, and live on campus is hanging out at the student union. this was the first year to open so it was the most used place of the year. this where most of the things on campus happens. you can eat, hang out with friends, meet new people, visit the different clubs offices, watch movies in our theater downstairs, buy your books, visit the coffee house, study ,shop, go the the bank we have (U.S. Bank), etc. the list goes on.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus we have a hunted house on our camups. its called the epperson house and its said that late at night crazy thing happen around and in that house.
Bang for the buck make what you can for what you want
What to do for fun this is always different things to do on and off campus. we have different events every week so you should never get bored. but it is up to you to get out and find something that you like to do or even try different things that you never done before to see f you like doing that also. college is for you to explore and bring the best out of yourself.
Food and Dining the food is good here you get all three meals a day if you want them. their is different things to choose from and you want be left out. theirs is something for everyone
Dorm Life dorm life is where you meet new people and even new friends. this is one the the most important parts that makes college. you have to make this your home for the next few years of your life. to making your room homey is a great way not to get home sick and and surrounding yourself with friends and different activities will take your mind off it.
Academic Rigor this very good here
Tips for prospective students do you makes you you when you come here. that's how you will find yourself and find where you belong.

Clubs and Activities Several clubs for several tastes. ALso have school athletic and intramural teams.
Great for these types of students Many science opportunities.
What to do for fun There are many things to do like go to the shopping center a couple block west of the school, or the library, or the river market that is south of the city.
Food and Dining Its good. There is a school cafeteria, a chik filet, and other restaurants close buy. It is always better to cook for yourself though.
Dorm Life Meet a lot of new people.
Academic Rigor There are many classes that maintain that you think outside the box or that you use the knowledge that you have and apply it to reality.
Tips for prospective students Stay on top of homework. Review notes for at least 45 min everyday Get plenty of rest Enjoy yourself. This is college not prison Learn to cook Utilize the recreation center Go to athletic events
In three sentences UMKC is currently in transition from a commuter school to a true full time university. It's population is growing everyday and meets many of the expectations for someone seeking a Arts and Science degree. It is very important to be involved with the professors here because a lot of them believe that no matter what happens in life, it is your responsibility to get coursework done.

Categories Comments Greek Life Honestly, besides attending UMKC in the first place, joining Greek life has been one of the best decisions of my life. UMKC Greek life is different from the big schools because it is very, very focused on academics and community involvement. When I came to UMKC, I had zero intentions of joining Greek life, but was convinced to at least go through Formal Recruitment. During that weekend, I met so many incredible, smart, fun young women that I just had to be a part of it. It's the best support system and home away from home that I ever could have dreamed of. I have had so many great leadership and networking opportunities arise simply because I am in Greek life. If you are attending UMKC, consider Greek life!
Clubs and Activities UMKC has a wonderful student life! There are so many ways to get involved, meet new people, claim leadership positions, and have great new life experiences!
What to do for fun UMKC is right in the heart of Kansas City, so there are countless things to do for fun! The Plaza, Downtown, Westport, and Brookside are areas that host great events and are only a couple minutes away. Some of my favorite activities have been Happy Hours on the Plaza (not just drinks, but cheap, GOOD food too!), First Fridays in the Cross Roads, and running through all of the different neighborhoods.
Food and Dining It's cafeteria dining. The culinary staff does a great job of trying to make new things, as well as cook the favorites that everybody loves. Personally, I loved the salad and sandwich bars.
Dorm Life I loved living in the dorms! Due to circumstances, I had to live there for the first two years and I can honestly say it is one of the best experiences a college student can have. It's a great way to meet people, as well as truly experience the activities occurring on campus. With UMKC being such a commuter school, it can be difficult to know what is taking place on campus, so living in the dorms places you right in the middle of everything!
Academic Rigor My first two years of education at UMKC were not too strenuous, but the second semester of my junior year, totally dedicated to my emphasis and major, was more difficult.
Tips for prospective students Get involved! Attending class and achieving good grades is, of course, very important, but employers are more impressed by well-rounded individuals. They want employees who can be team players and are capable of balancing multiple tasks at work, as well as extracurricular activities. UMKC has SO many chances for students to become involved, resulting in great networking, leadership opportunties, and fun times! Also, with UMKC being such a commuter school, sometimes the only way to become emotionally connected to the campus is through meeting people via student organizations.
In three sentences UMKC is a thriving school in the middle of bustling Kansas City. Touting an extremely diverse student population, the cultural learning environment is impressive. Not only claiming an excellent faculty and staff that educate the student population in their regular studies, UMKC embraces hundreds of student organizations that help students become more involved on campus and create numerous networking possibilities, helping lead to a better and brighter future for everyone.

Categories Comments Campus Safety When I visited the campus I noticed the huge police presence in the area. There is a campus police station and there is also a local city police station that is just a few blocks away. My comfort level immediately increased in regards to safety at the off campus apartments and dorms. Its nice to know that campus safety is one less thing to worry about when your a transfer student to a new college.
Greek Life The Greek life is another part of the college that I haven't really been able to experience yet but I am looking forward to doing so.
Clubs and Activities Just from looking on the UMKC website I was able to notice the variety of different organizations and clubs that are available for its students.
Great for these types of students Students who are more interested in Art or Architecture would love attending school here. The area is one of the top in the nation for its Art scene.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I haven't really had the opportunity to experience any of the traditions on campus yet but I am looking forward to doing so.
Bang for the buck The college is expensive to attend. It's the most expensive campus that I have attended so far, but the quality of service that I will be receiving is worth the money.
What to do for fun The campus has many sporting events and activities to attend. The location of the campus also makes it convenient for many different activities within Kansas City, such as, NFL football games, major league baseball games, and also a ton of lakes and museums in the surrounding areas.
Food and Dining I haven't had the pleasure of eating on campus as of yet but I have noticed that on their website they have a large dining hall and its comforting to know that they promote a healthier lifestyle through their meal program.
Dorm Life They have worked out arrangements for not just student dorms but also student apartments that are within walking distance of the campus. They have multiple locations to choose from so for those that might be a little more picky as to where they'd like to live are able to do so.
Academic Rigor The courses offered are unique but they coincide well with other college transfer credits. The ease of successfully graduating form their campus appears to be easier than other colleges.
Tips for prospective students Anyone looking to attend UMKC should do so without hesitation. If you have any questions at all and need help don't be afraid to call. Their staff is more than willing to help any and all who desire to attend their college and even those who are transferring to or from their campus.
In three sentences The campus is a gorgeous campus, conveniently located in Kansas City, around everything that a typical college student needs. The staff was very helpful assisting me in obtaining the needed requirements for registration and also in advising and financial aid. I have attended two other colleges prior to attending UMKC and out of all three, the staff at UMKC has been the most helpful.

Greek Life Seems fun but i dont know much about it.
Clubs and Activities There are some sports, greek life and moderately sized clubs.
Great for these types of students Music Students,Artist, Medical Students, Business Students and Nurses
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are unique restaurants and a lot of art, of all kinds.
Bang for the buck For the caliber of material i am learning in the conservatory is amazing for the price.
What to do for fun There isnt a whole lot to do on campus but you are right in the middle of the city.
Food and Dining The cafeteria and restaurants ran by UMKC are usually not fresh and not that great tasting. The people who work there are great tough.
Dorm Life It sucks, live in a house near campus. It is much better
Academic Rigor It depends on the program. Some classes i have taken (non-conservatory) have been the opposite of rigorousness. But others i have gained a great knowledge from attending,
Tips for prospective students Go to class! That is half the battle.
In three sentences Thee are several programs that are outstanding at UMKC. The school seems to be growing in a positive direction and graduates seems to do well after they get a degree. The conservatory has thought be a lot and proved to be competitive nationally.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are campus police circling around campus all day and night. There are emergency buttons every corner. If one feels uneasy about walking to a late class or walking to their car, they can ask for a campus officer to escort them.
Clubs and Activities Soccer soccer soccer! The Swinney Rec Center is also a great place to work out! Everyone is there! Everything you can name there is a place or equipment for it. My favorite is the rock climbing treadmill, intense workout!!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The library attracts students of all kinds. The first floor is most interesting with its design and Red Bull girls come around every so often to pass out free drinks!
Bang for the buck Get a meal plan! Yes, it seems quite expensive at a first glance, but it pays off. There's nothing better than convenience. Chic-Fil-a is right around the corner and Einstein Bros. is in one of the main lecture buildings. After freshmen year, living at an apartment like Union Hill or Longfellow with other roommates is great!
What to do for fun The Plaza! There is shopping and food and just to walk around to find interesting people passes time quite well! There is also Westport which is about a ten minute walk that also has food and local businesses. With a car, there are endless possibilities. Worlds of Fun, similar to Six Flags, is also a great place to have fun! Going to the Plaza on certain days there are events such as art shows, acrobatics, food trucks, etc.
Food and Dining Chic-Fil-a all the way!! Very convenient, always fresh, and never gets old! Try their fresh squeezed lemonade! Baja Fresh is also great if it seems Chipotle is a far walk. The cafeteria food is good on a regular basis. On special occasions, it is delicious; meal plan well spent!
Dorm Life Oak street is the popular one! It has more of a social feel to it. Granted the bathrooms are not up to par with Johnson's dorm, the bigger rooms make up for it. There are piano rooms in the basement for musicians. A very nice lobby with a big t.v and pool table and Foosball for socializing. Oak street is built encircling a courtyard in the middle for those who want to lie in the sun or play a little Frisbee. Johnson is the newly built dorm with also the same commodities as Oak. For those who mind, Johnson is not co-ed like Oak. Johnson is split into male and female wings. Johnson is smaller than Oak so bumping into a friend is not as likely as Oak. They both are great depending on personal preferences.
Academic Rigor Science classes are the challenging ones, based on my experience. I am a Psychology Pre-Med major. Professors are very understanding of emergency situations regarding homework and such. There is always something to keep you studying for. What better thing to motivate you to go to the Miller-Nichols library are free Red-Bull drinks here and there!!
Tips for prospective students Live in the dorms first year and, if interested, apply for an RA position for paid housing and a great experience. The 113 steps of the stairs in front of the Student Union never get old; stay fit. Find a reliable buddy (preferably the same major) to help one another in classes. Always be prepared for rainy days or pure laziness to walk to the University Center Cafeteria. Check your email everyday!!
In three sentences It is the in-between of a large university and a small university. The professors are amazing. The campus is basically Kansas City.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There was always alot to do the plaza is walking distance as well as the nelson atkins museum. I enjoyed playing tennis near campus. The recreation center also had fun clubs to join. The kauffmann center was close as well as other local theatres and i love going when i could afford to see a show!
Food and Dining The meal plan was nice to have. It was convenient and there was always a nice selection to choose from. The cafeteria was also a great way to meet new people.
Dorm Life The dorms are very close to the rest of campus which was nice. My roommate experiences were positive and we are still good friends now.We had two people to a room and a bathroom connected two rooms together.I really enjoyed not having a community bathroom and having some privacy. The dorms really helped me meet people and and get settled into a new city.
Academic Rigor In the consevatory if you put in your hours practicing it makes the work for many of the classes an easier task. As far as music history classes and gen eds the coursework involves more book work. But if you manage your time well the work is very do-able!
Tips for prospective students Get things done ahead of time and get organized. If you are looking to be a part of the conservatory you have to be ready to dedicate alot of time to practicing. Scoolwork is important but dont forget about relaxing and having fun it helps after a long day!
In three sentences I will be starting my sophmore year at umkc this coming fall studying vocal performance and I couldnt be more happy with my choice. I had a great experience my first year, the conservatory has a well rounded program and provides opportunities for performance experience. The professors are always available and willing to work with me when i need an extra boost and the atmosphere is welcoming.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students When I attended UMKC years ago, I was a more traditional student. My life was centered on the school experience. Though my major choice was not for me, the experience was life changing. Today, I am an adult online student. The experience is completely different from the one I had earlier. However, I feel as if the level if the education I am receiving is of the same caliber.
Bang for the buck I have studied at a few different schools. A few were more expensive than UMKC. I don't feel that there were any perks to the additional funds spent. In fact, UMKC, being a state school is a great value.
What to do for fun Kansas City is an exciting city. Only blocks away is the Plaza. Not only is this a great place to spend a afternoon, but during Christmas it becomes a spectacular wonderland. On another day, you may find yourself at a Royal's baseball of Chief's football game. Travel a sort way into Kansas and you can enjoy a day at the Kansas Speedway, enjoying a NASCAR experience. These are just the highlights. There are many other nooks and hidden jewels to explore.
Food and Dining I've only dropped in to the food courts a handful of times but each time I felt that the family type atmosphere was very welcoming.
Dorm Life I have never experience dorm life. I do know that even now my friends who were traditional students 20 years ago continue to tell stories about dorm life. They are experiences that have stayed with them this long. They came out of the dorm with a better understanding of community.
Academic Rigor UMKC sets high standards for their students. This enables us to become more active members of society. When returning to school I was surprised at the level of work that was required of me. I was even more surprised and thrilled that I exceeded even my own expectations.
Tips for prospective students School for everyone is work. You aren't going to slide through no matter how smart you are. Stick with it and keep your eye on the prize.
In three sentences UMKC is a diverse and accepting university. I studied here years ago and am back to finish my degree year later. I find that my experience now is as equally as fulfilling and broadening to me as it was years ago.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Second biggest city known for the many fountains
Bang for the buck Very cheap tuition
What to do for fun Swim at the recreation center, watch the NCAA D1 Basketball team, or go shopping at the Plaza which is 5 minutes walking distance from the school!
Food and Dining Campus food isn't that great BUT there are places in the school where you can purchase a bit more pricier food for a better taste.
Dorm Life Dorms are very clean and neat the oldest dorm is 8 years old! You can choose between a suite style or as a sophomore get your own room!
Academic Rigor 125 programs to study including medicine, pharmacy, law, and education.
Tips for prospective students Apply early to get automatic scholarships Visit the campus as soon as possible so you can experience yourself
In three sentences Great tuition rates for In-State and out of state students 125 programs to study Not to big, not to small campus

Categories Comments What to do for fun UMKC is located very close to the Plaza, several parks, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the KC Library, Westport, and many other areas were food, shopping, and exploring, etc. are easy to come by.
Food and Dining As a transfer student, I have always lived off campus from UMKC and don't feel qualified rating this particular aspect of the college (I had to check something to submit this review, so that is why there are three stars). That said, I have never heard any students complain about the campus food.
Dorm Life As a transfer student, I have always lived off campus from UMKC and don't feel qualified rating this particular aspect of the college (I had to check something to submit this review, so that is why there are three stars). If you aren't interested in living in the dorms, there are several apartment options close to campus as well as house renting options.
Academic Rigor As a humanities major, most of my classes have been essay based on exams and assignments. This is great in that there isn't a ton of homework required, but it is essential to do a good job on the assignments since they are worth a larger portion of the grade.
Tips for prospective students Check the financial aid deadlines early! This college has very early deadlines compared to other colleges such as MCC-Maple Woods.
In three sentences UMKC is a great option for local high school students to consider as there are several financial aid options available for individuals from the area. Campus is located in a great area as well, with many shopping, eating, etc. options just a walking distance away!

Categories Comments What to do for fun Kansas City is full of places that are fun to go. The plaza, westport, and brookside are all in walking distance of the school. This includes places to eat, shop, parks, etc.
Food and Dining Cafeteria is just okay, but the student union does have decent food. Plaza is right down the street and has awesome happy hour!
Dorm Life Oak is better to live at versus Johnson because there are more people, it is more centrally located, and they have tempur pedic mattresses.
Academic Rigor Freshmen year you will be able to go out and have fun, but you DEFINITELY will have nights were you have to stay in and study vigorously even on weekends throughout the rest of your time at UMKCC.
Tips for prospective students Get involved and try and live on campus. It is a big commuter school so it is helpful if you leave on campus to meet people. Parking is terrible right now! There is a lot of construction currently, but it will all be worth it when they are finished.
In three sentences UMKC is a great school that offers a lot of opportunities to those going into the medical field. All of my teachers so far have gone above and beyond helping me reach my goals. Awesome location!

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus safety is great you have the opportunity the feel safe and secure on campus.
What to do for fun The time that i do have for fun i support UMKC basketball, soccer, tennis, and track teams. During the summers i try to get involved with sororities and fun organizations.
Food and Dining UMKC has a lot of restaurants that provide fast food while your rushing in between classes. the food is nutritionist and healthy. The only problem that a person may have is that sometimes it becomes expensive.
Dorm Life I am not a Dorm girl, i have never stay at a dorm.
Academic Rigor Academicly UMKC is a great University to get your education. There are resorce centers that will help you with your classes. There are teachers and faculty members that will take the time to help you also. There is activities that you can participate in or support. The opportunities that UMKC has are opportunities that are hard to find at other universities.
Tips for prospective students UMKC welcome all of their students with open arms. For students that come from a different state, there is always somewhere that you can go to on campus to get the help that you need. If you stay focused and involved at UMKC you will come out with an good experience that you can look back on.
In three sentences UMKC gave me the opportunity to go to college and explore a higher learning. It is important to take in every experience at UMKC and get involved on campus. the Diversity is awesome and you will get to meet great longtime peers for life.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There have been some unsafe instances on campus but for the most part it is safe. On campus there are emergency alert stations and campus security and police officers.
Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs to choose from including student government and almost any group that you can think of. If there is a group that does not exist then there is opportunity to create a club.
Bang for the buck Most of the professors at this university are very interested in student success.
What to do for fun The campus features many college life activities to provide fun to the students.
Food and Dining There is one cafeteria on the main campus that has a good variety of food served that is very good quality.
Academic Rigor This university has pretty high standards and pushes its students to strive to meet those standards.
Tips for prospective students The campus is not too big so walking through campus in a reasonable amount of time is possible. If you are going into nursing, pharmacy, health sciences, or med school then you will have to attend the health sciences campus that is located only 10 minutes away from the main campus.
In three sentences The University of Missouri-Kansas City is a great university that is located very close to a lot of shopping and fun things to do. It is a great school to commute to if you live in the greater Kansas City area. I would rate this university highly.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have never had any problems on campus and I have some late night classes and I tend to walk by myself and I have never had any problems.
Clubs and Activities There a wide range of clubs available here at UMKC. There is truly something for everyone.
Bang for the buck UMKC tuition in state isn't terribly expensive but there out of state runs a little high.
What to do for fun There are a wide range of groups to get involved with here at UMKC. Head over to the student union to find one that fits you!!
Food and Dining The UMKC cafeteria could use some work. I prefer to prepare my own food.
Dorm Life I don't recommend dorm life if you have previously been on your own its a shock. But If your fresh out of high school and you are getting out out on your own for the first time I believe it will go well.
Academic Rigor The courses offered here at UMKC are comparable to other colleges. It challenging but not to challenging.
Tips for prospective students If your applying for financial aid be sure to do so early they tend to have computer problems closer to deadlines.
In three sentences UMKC is a wonderful school. It's very diverse here, which allows you to learn about others cultures and background. The learning experience all around is awesome, the professors here truly care about the students.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is not in the greatest part of town, but I feel safe on campus. The police presence is zero--they will even park a patrol car with no one in it in the meter lots or at an intersection to imply a police presence which to me is just asinine.
Greek Life Very little presence. They don't have houses, and I don't ever remember hearing about rush or even seeing signs or t-shirts.
Clubs and Activities Like I said, there are tons of organizations you can get involved in, and they are very easy to find on the school's website. I would say the offerings are above average.
Great for these types of students There are a variety of classes offered to fill requirements at convenient times so you can build your schedule around your needs, It's a good school for someone who works or has outside responsibilities. I prefer a larger school outside the Midwest, but for someone with strong ties to the community, it's a good option.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a Toy & Miniature Museum on campus. I haven't been, but I've heard it is interesting.
Bang for the buck Pretty average for a mid-sized Midwest university.
What to do for fun There is very little support for athletics, although they have a very nice recreation center. There are a ton of student organizations and a website for easy searching. I wouldn't say UMKC is a very social school, as in 2 years I have made few friends in my classes. It is more of a commuter campus with little sense of community.
Food and Dining Typical college offerings--coffee shops, juice bars, and cafeteria-style dining. Nothing is particularly exceptional. There is an Einstein Bros. in one of the main buildings where classes are held, which is nice.
Dorm Life I haven't lived in the dorm personally (I believe there is only one) but they are brand new and supposedly very nice.
Academic Rigor Compared to Arizona State, I would say the classes are as hard if not harder. Due to the size of the school, the class sizes are smaller so you will see less all-multiple choice scantron tests. Expect more challenging exams (essays, short answer) and more assignments than at a larger university.
Tips for prospective students The size of the school does allow for easier access to the faculty. If you plan on attending grad school, find at least one or two faculty members you like and build a relationship with them. Go to their office hours, exchange e-mails, anything you can do to get to know them and allow them to get to know you. It is so beneficial to have a faculty mentor, and you will need them as references when applying for grad school.
In three sentences I transferred from Arizona State University and feel stifled at UMKC. There is little sense of community and almost zero school spirit. The education is of average quality and comparatively small-minded.

Categories Comments Campus Safety All is well!!
Bang for the buck Overall you have fun even when you aren't trying to the professor's are chill and most of the work is too!
What to do for fun Your tuition pays for the gym, I suggest that you go once or twice a week. Each time I go I leave with a new friend!
Food and Dining There are tons of places all around campus and even on campus to eat!!
Dorm Life Of course living in a dorm can be fun but there are those certain problems that can end your college career be sure to respect yourself and others. UMKC's dorms are co-ed!
Academic Rigor You absolutely have to study, but its fun when you do it with someone else. Find or create a study group!
Tips for prospective students Learn your: Professors, fellow students, campus and resources. Above all, just have a great time!
In three sentences This is an awesome place with fun and exciting programs. This university is a great place to meet friends, it has a diverse population and many resources to help you with coursework. The professors are excellent at helping you and meeting with you if you need some one on one time.

Categories Comments Campus Safety We always count with more than 3 Police Patrols, I had never felt that way anywhere.
Greek Life There are 2 Fraternity houses and 1 Sorority house on campus. They seem to be pretty small and quiet, but I don't know much about them
Clubs and Activities Since I am not 21 I can't tell you with reliability.
Great for these types of students UMKC is great for students which like to study and mean while get a part time job. This is a great opportunity since you have time enough for having a part time job. Athletes have a bunch of Scholarships opportunities. If you want to meet people from all around the world UMKC is an excellent option. The Study Abroad programs are vast and will definitely fill your expectancies if you are looking for an opportunity like that.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus As an international student they have plenty of exciting programs.
Bang for the buck Kansas City is a pretty expensive city, but it is great as long as you find out how to manage your budget.
What to do for fun That's the real problem, there is not much to do. I try to spend my time at the gym an doing homework. Kansas City is a beautiful city, but it lacks of interesting stuff for a college student.
Food and Dining The food at the cafeteria is really good, you can choose and change your menu every day so you don't get bored with it.
Dorm Life I don't live personally on the dorms, however my new friends told me that it is exciting and that they are always playing games between all of them and that it is extremely fun.
Academic Rigor The normal classes to attend per semester are 4, however you can enroll in up to 6 classes. I will definitely recommend to go for 5 classes. If you don't have a job or anything else to do, you will have a lot of free time. Classes are fun and even though they are not that hard, you will have to read and write a lot.
Tips for prospective students Try to decide your minor before you even attend UMKC, it's easier and it will take less time than if you choose it once you are attending.
In three sentences Interesting classes. Exciting college life. Great support by all the UMKC staff. (Professors, Advisors etc...)

Categories Comments Campus Safety for being in a bad area of kansas city, the campus is definitely safe. the kc police and umkc police are always on call and very fast. i have not had or heard of anything besides minor thefts around or near campus.
Greek Life they do have fraternities and sororities here at umkc. there aren't many of them, but i do hear the ones that are here are well enjoyed by the members. they do have the main 3 i hear about a lot which is fraternity alpha beta, and sororities ad pi and chi omega.
Clubs and Activities i hear a lot of good things about the activities on campus. same with clubs. i am not joined in any this year since i am a freshman but do plan on joining in on a few next semester.
Great for these types of students any. medical students, art students, architecture students, dance, athletics, and even lgbtqia are welcome here and no discrimination.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus they don't have football, only soccer. not that it is unusual, it just is for me since i grew up in a very football based community.
Bang for the buck i believe it's not the ideal place for a college with the violence, but i think umkc being next to the plaza and other fun things gives students the option to do instead of other not-so-good choices. it is pricey i will say, but they offer so many classes and are well ranked for medical programs, it is worth paying for.
What to do for fun the school offers many inter-mural sports that any students can participate in, as well as a very nice work out area with an indoor track and outdoor track. they also offer free movies every so often in the theater on campus and all of the home sporting events are free to students.
Food and Dining the meal plans are really expensive, but the food is pretty descent for the most part. i don't like that you cant take food out with you besides the to go meals at all though. it's a new thing and not many people have nice things to say about it. the dinner times i think are shut down too early. most students find it hard to make it to dinner before 7pm with studying or classes.
Dorm Life it is a little noisy sometimes with people who dont follow the quiet hour rules, but you don't have to worry about community showers which is very nice. the rooms are really nice sized compared to other dorm rooms i have seen at other colleges as well.
Academic Rigor umkc has great teachers who are very helpful and most classes are not very big so you can get the one-on-one time for the most part with a teacher who's class you may not be doing so wel in. they offer many si sessions and even have a sass department for any other academic help you may need. the sass helpers are really helpful.
Tips for prospective students make sure you apply early so you are eligible for the $1,000 freshmen scholarships they award and any others that you may be eligible for. staying in the residence halls really helps with getting to class on time and actually isn't that pricey depending on how far away you live. also, make sure you buy a parking pass early. they run out very fast and parking is very limited around the area.
In three sentences i am very happy with umkc during my first year here. everyone is extremely helpful and happy to assist you in whatever it is you might need. i do wish they offered more class times, as in the same class multiple time slots because it helps out students like me who work during the day.

Food and Dining the cafeteria isnt all that great, but there are many other options to choose from: chick-fil-a, baja fresh, jazzman's, sub-connection, einstein's.

Categories Comments Campus Safety being downtown, you always want to be extra safe. but nothing bad really happens ever! students are always looking out for one another as well.
Greek Life not too much of that, and if there is i'm not too sure about it. but i know there are some!
Clubs and Activities many, many different things for students to do! there is essentially a club for anything. i am a part of a couple already!
Great for these types of students students who like to interact with others through clubs or activities. students who like to get involved in any way at all,. the best part for me was the urban setting in downtown kansas city!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus well, we're not the typical school in the sense that we don't have a football team, but the basketball team is really good! games are fun, the student union made by students for the students is a really great hang-out place. haven't found seen too many unusual traditions yet!
Bang for the buck while it is not unusually expensive, sometimes the financial department has time getting student's financial aids to come through in a timely manner. definitely don't deal with finances at the last minute! but everyone in the financial aid office is willing to help!
What to do for fun join clubs and participate in activities. super close to places like westport, plaza, etc. and just getting to know some of the students is fun!
Food and Dining they have a diverse selection of choices for the students to eat, including a cafeteria, coffeehouses, mexican food, chik-fil-a, subconnections. it is also conveniently located around many other nicer restaurants, for a change of scenery.
Dorm Life never was part of the dorm life, but i'm sure it's a lot of fun!
Academic Rigor the academic rigor depends on what subjects you are studying and what classes you take, but nothing i've taken so far has been too intense. most of the teachers are helpful and willing to take time out of their day to help you succeed.
Tips for prospective students definitely do your best! use the resources made available to you for your advantage. join clubs and activities to meet people!
In three sentences it's actually a really good school! lots of student activities and helpful resources. the urban setting makes it a lot of fun as well.

Categories Comments Campus Safety the campus is a very safe place and in every building there is security of some sort. there is multiple ways that the campus is secured and there are always policeman on duty.
Bang for the buck umkc is a great place to go and is worth the money. it is a quality education and a fun place.
Food and Dining there are tons of places that you can eat. the cafeteria has a wide variety of foods including vegetarian options. there is also restaurants that are in the student union and some right across the street so you will never get bored eating the same things.
Dorm Life the dorms are very nice and you can meet a lot of people by living there. they are also very safe and have multiple security measures. it is clean and spacious in the rooms.
Academic Rigor the academics at this school hold you to a high standard of learning. they expect you to go to class and participate, but since the classes are small and the teachers are very helpful you can easily make good grades with effort.
Tips for prospective students i think you should join at least one club, organization, or participate in greek life so you can get to know more people.
In three sentences i think that umkc is a good school that is academically focused and there is still plenty of other activities to do. the classes are smaller and the teachers know you by name so it helps with one on one class experience and you are able to learn better.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you're planning to enter the medical field or nursing program, definitely look into the 6-Year Medical Program and UMKC's Nursing Program, they are pretty intense, but it comes out worthwhile in the end. There are other great programs, but I am really only aware of these two at this point. The 6-Year Medical Program is very intense and hard to get in, so do not be surprised if you cannot get in the first time, never give up, you can always reapply the following year. Never give up on your dreams! Any kind of medical or pre-professional career that you may have is offered in this university, just make sure you have plenty of information about it.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that when you begin visiting college campuses you know what kind of college you are looking for. Aim for a specific college size, classroom sizes, campus resources, definitely the cost, and whether you want to commute or where you want to stay while in college. Another big thing is does that college offer a good program for your planned career? Do not allow others to discourage you or give up. Continue to keep grades high in high school. Here in KC,there aren't very good apartments close to the campus, so if you have to stay on campus, start searching for apartments or houses to rent ahead of time! It is very worthwhile in the end. It keeps you inspired and motivated to reach high and not give up easily, especially when you see people working so hard, it motivated you to stay on top of your work. If you do come from out-of-town, a car is helpful to have around, (even though parking on campus is hard to find). looking for a nice place if you are not planning to stay in the dorms is also very hard. Stay active, it really helps you maintain that balance necessary in a college lifestyle. The campus pressure is pretty tight, so brace yourself. Take advantages of the free workshops they offer during the semesters. Ask as many questions as you have about the university so that you are not in for any surprises.
Bang for the buck I have taken out loans this year and I have only 1 scholarship, but I am trying to apply for more and hoping that I can earn more, the tuition is low because I am still in-state, I still struggle financially because my parents earn low-income. This is why I am not trying to play around with my education, I do plan to stay focused and work hard throughout the rest of my college career. I want to make every penny worth it. Since I am a first generation college student, I am learning a lot about college and all its tricks. I am also a person who is very determined and does not like to give up so easily, I do not like settling for no, you can't do it. I have to try whatever I am struggling with at least once before giving up.
Am enjoying being here Yes, I love the experience because I thought it would be weird being 4 hours away from home. It is good, though, and I think I am able to stay more focused academically. Staying on-campus seems to help me also get to places better. I am enjoying the experience so far.
Academic Rigor I am majoring in Chemistry with a BA. I have learned a lot from the variety of clubs, and other resources that the campus has to offer. The campus is big, but all the main buildings are close to each other, so it is easy to get to places such as the cafeteria, gym, student center or even the administrative center.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Older students going back to school.
Tips for prospective students If you are commuting, get a bus schedule. The parking is limited to the few students living in dorms; the rest are forced to park elsewhere and ride the bus the rest of the way. It is free though.
Bang for the buck I had a scholarship that said it would cover most of my fees. However it came with several strings attatched and my tuition more than tripled. For that amount I would rather go to a larger school that is not located downtown and in a bad area of a city.
Did enjoy being here The campus looks pretty decent. It is small so everything is farely close. However, it has too many stairs. For a small school it is a pain having to carry books and walking to your next class in the heat having to walk up tons of stairs outside.
Did learn a lot I did not attend very long. One of my teachers didn't speak English very well so it was hard to understand, and frustrating as well.

Tips for prospective students A little tip i will give to prospective students is that, they should know they have made the best choice considering UMKC, and should not get endulged in the activities and forget about their GPAs
Bang for the buck The school is quite costly but it is worth it. But we are provided with scholarships including good organiztions like this one, helps us have a wonderful college life.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy being here. The assistance we get from the teachers in the school, they help you get better. The extracuricullar activities to distract you when necessary.
Am learning a lot I am learning alot and it is very reassuring to know you are being thought by one of the best set of teachers. This is my one time life opportunity to be a ROO so i am making the best out of it.

Will enjoy being here It looks like fun. Not party all night kind, but educationally fun.
Will learn a lot My father went here and they offer programs of what I am interested in.

Bang for the buck Great education for the price. The average student to teacher ratio is 12:1, which is great. The teachers are said to truly care about the success of the student.
Will enjoy being here The 6-year medical program is something i will enjoy to set me up for my future. Also, KC is an area that I could enjoy living in.
Will learn a lot If accepted, I plan to be a part of the 6-year medical program. This program is awesome, and set up well. I loved how much clinical experience I would earn throughout my six years. It is also cheaper than attending undergrad and medicene.

Bang for the buck Can be pricey but it is worth it. Who wouldn't want to have fun while learning and pursuing a career?
Am enjoying being here The campus is great and there are a lot of things to do, not only on campus but in Kansas City
Am learning a lot Great teachers and a lot of tutors/help for struggling students

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is challenging for Science majors, but they seem to learn a lot. Because the programs are so rigorous they end up being better students and candidates for their field.
Tips for prospective students Get involved and live on campus! You will have more fun, meet more people and stay focused!
Bang for the buck I'm learning a lot and it's not too expensive. Yes, college is expensive, but UMKC is not as bad as other places!
Am enjoying being here I absolutely love it here. There are so many groups and organizations to get involved in. The more you get involved, the more you get to know people, and then you have even more fun while getting your education.
Am learning a lot There is so much information out there, you just have to go for it and take the classes! Step outside your bubble, but not too far, stay on track! Make it a great time!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students 1. Adventurous- someone who is looking to meet all kinds of new people, and someone who is looking to do all kinds of new activities. 2. Hard-worker- almost every student here, is here for a reason. They are very dedicated and know exactly what they want to do with their life. It can be intimidating, but know yourself and your goals. You will be fine!
Tips for prospective students 1. get involved with everything you can find! 2. meet new people every where you go! meet new people every day! Yes you are supposed to find you good group of friends, but new people introduce new things/ideas to you, that's what college us all about! 3. Don't get behind in your classes, DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! procrastination will only make it worse! 4. Always study for your first exams much more than you think you should! You never know how that teacher tests, so it is better to be over prepared than under prepared! 3. LIVE ON CAMPUS your first year especially. it is a great way to meet new people and stay involved with them.
Bang for the buck I believe UMKC is a great price for what education and experiences I have received here. I am not only attending classes where I am learning a ton, I am enjoying them as well. I am thankful for the location of UMKC. I am right next to the plaza, which means I can walk to something exciting. We are so close to the city it is amazing, a city is full of many wondrous things, you just have to go out and find them!
Am enjoying being here First semester was not near as fun as second semester is so far. Give any college you attend more time than you think is needed. You cant decide in one semester if you hate the school or not. College is a big adjustment, you just have to get used to it. But the best advice is to get involved. Find new people, new activities, anything to keep you busy! Even if its a Saturday night and you cant find anything to do, have a movie night, call all your friends, open you door (if you live in the dorms). As long as you are doing something with someone, then you will have fun!
Am learning a lot I am a Freshman here at UMKC. So I am just taking mostly gen eds right now. You would think that most of your gen ed teachers don't care because everyone has to take their class and blah blah blah. But I love my teachers, every single one of them have a passion for what they teach, which as most people know, only makes the class more interesting for the student. So I am learning a lot and I am actually enjoying the pointless gen ed classes I am enrolled in.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for really anyone, but I would also like to point out that those who enjoy life in the heart of the city would also really enjoy UMKC (especially for living in the dorms). I chose to live in a suburb and feel I have best of both worlds: safer feeling at home but all the fun/cultural events of the city!
Tips for prospective students Take good notes for all your classes and you will probably be in good shape. I don't live on campus, but if it's something you are willing to pay for the dorms are nice and you will always be there for class. (I mention being there for class because UMKC tries really hard to avoid snow days, etc.)
Bang for the buck Although slightly more expensive than my last school, there are so many more academic programs on top of the top-notch faculty. Plus, there are generally ways to get scholarships, so it's totally worth it.
Am enjoying being here It only took a few days to start making friends, the campus is good-looking (but not too huge) and the city is so much better than my last location.
Am learning a lot This is my first semester at UMKC but so far it has been great. All of my classes are good to awesome and all of the teachers are nice and willing to help. Not to mention the majority of my teachers are just fun personalities, though that may not be true in the future.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students The University of Missouri - Kansas City is recommended for students who want a quality education, but want to stay close to home. I would also recommend UMKC for students who want to major in the arts, because UMKC offers great academic programs in the arts. I would also recommend UMKC to students who love and want to spend time in Kansas City. UMKC is located in a great place in the city, and is right next to the Country Club Plaza--which is a state-of-the-art shopping and entertainment district here in Kansas City.
Tips for prospective students My advice is to do what you love at UMKC. Find whatever your passion is and go for it. I feel that there are ample opportunities to find whatever it is that you're looking for and some here at UMKC. We have a wonderful conservatory, astounding theatre and a vast array of other fields that prepare students for success in their future occupational careers.
Bang for the buck If you work hard, any institution is worth whatever it costs to go there. I feel that I am getting a quality education at UMKC and that I am working towards my ultimate career goals by attending UMKC, and, to me, that's worth it.
Am enjoying being here I have been a student at UMKC for one semester, and I must say that it has been a fairly good experience. I do not live on campus; however, I am content with my social life. I am from the Kansas City metropolitan area so I continue to see my old high school friends now and then.
Am learning a lot As a graduate of the Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City, Missouri, I was well-prepared for college. Attending the University of Missouri - Kansas City has been a breeze for me thus far because the academics thus far are not as rigorous as even my freshmen year in high school. However, if you are a graduate of some other high school, then you might find the transition from that respective high school to the University of Missouri - Kansas City a bit more challenging because of the necessity to study regularly, the fact that grades are earned and not given, and the fact that your parents are not there to help and assist you--you must help yourself by seeking aid from teachers or peers on campus.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students who want to live at home and live in the Kansas City area who are pursuing pharmacy or some other health profession. This is not a school for social events or even sport events. This is strictly a means to an end to undergraduate school.
Tips for prospective students There is not a wide variety of students here and most people keep to themselves. I do not recommend this for someone who is looking to branch out and to make college the best years of their life; however, if you intend on getting into dental or pharmacy school and are a Missouri resident, this may be a great place for you. Just don't expect it to be a lot of fun or to make a ton of friends.
Bang for the buck As a medical student, I paid more than the typical person attending UMKC. I paid an extra $10,000 so that I could have doctors to follow around in the hospital and doctors to lecture my medical school class. This is cheaper than University of Missouri at Columbia on regular tuition, however, is ranked much, much lower and has little of the things most college students are looking for.
Did enjoy being here The city does not have a lot to do for students under the age of 21 and the college is mostly a commuter school so there is not much to do on campus. For the size of the school, there is only two dorms so that may tell you something. Most students live off campus. It is extremely hard to meet people unless you are involved in some type of program such as pharmacy, medicine, or nursing. The only other way you can get to know people is through the extremely limited greek life. I must say Kansas City is one of the most terrifying cities I have ever been to with its crime rate. Also, the campus is located one block away from one of the worst streets in town. I never felt safe. Also, I felt it extremely hard to make friends though I was involved in many activities such as greek life and medical school. I wasted a year and a half of my life here!
Did learn a lot This college is much like any other college, however, quality of learning is lower than say at a smaller, cheaper school. This school is much harder than you'd think, without a lot of the credit. I was in the UMKC School of Medicine though so I am sure it is much different than the regular undergraduate programs. In the School of Medicine, it is a memorization game and no one truly learns the material. Come boards step one, most students fail miserably because of the lack of emphasis on true learning especially in the practical sciences.

Tips for prospective students Make sure to study the classes you'll be taking in your program of study to be sure the degree you select is right for you.
Bang for the buck UMKC is very affordable and most financial aid will fully cover all tuition and fees.
Did enjoy being here UMKC is a fun environment and a beautiful campus. Most of the teachers are friendly and helpful.
Did learn a lot The classes I took were a bit generalized and didn't have anything too specific or helpful to on the job work.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for people who are not huge party people, but do not mind get togethers and one party every now and then. Also good for people who like walking, the school is on a hill. Also, the classes are smaller than the average huge university. There are still a lot of people, but it is not cramped.
Tips for prospective students 1-DO NO PROCASTINATE. Trust me, you will regret it. Its still college. 2-Seek help when in doubt. There is a math /science resource center and SI. 3-Just because you can find all your class material online doesn't mean not going to class. Attend as much as you possibly can. 4-Stay involved. Everyone needs something to do besides studying. Trust me, you'd go crazy just staying in your room. 5-Keep track of your grades, that way you can know if you need to pick up the pace, or you can relax.
Bang for the buck The food here is way better than what they gave us in high school. So you will never go hungry. The Recreation Center is great for that basketball game with your new friends, the indoor track helps for those who do not want to run in the sun or the cold, and the pool is tempting. The dorms are nice, especially if you decorate your own room.
Am enjoying being here I love UMKC, there are not too many distractions to keep me from my work, but there is always something to do on campus. It you are not interested in anything, the Plaza is in walking distance from both the dorms. Its only boring here if you make it boring, but still remember to study.
Am learning a lot I am learning more at college than what I've learned from any of my Advanced Placement courses. The teachers cover broad topics and answer any questions the students have, especially through email or meetings. It also helps if you read about what your going over in class early, so you can get the full learning experience.

Tips for prospective students 1) Live on campus (MOST DEF your first year!) 2) Get involved in clubs/sports/greek life/etc. 3) Challenge the status quo
Bang for the buck Super cheap esp compared to other schools... and there are plenty of scholarships (IF YOU ARE FROM the KC Area or even Missouri) if you are from out of state... start looking for outside aid... NOW!
Am enjoying being here GET INVOLVED and live on or near campus if not... your social life will suck!
Am learning a lot Most teachers care about you learning, however sometimes don't expect you to know much since we aren't at Mizzou I guess so that offends me esp considering I could have went to Mizzou if I wanted.
