    Campus Safety

the campus is really safe. there are always security guards and when and if an incident happens there is police around.

    Greek Life

greek life is so great. at first i didn't think i would be the type to be in greek life but when i met all the wonderful people they were so open and welcoming. each sorority/fraternity has its own mission and philanthropy and you really find your place and get to be involved more as well as find your sisters/brothers that you will have for life and do things together.

    What to do for fun

there are plenty of clubs, teams, and organizations that you can join and you will really find your place here.

    Food and Dining

there are currently two dining halls. the food is good and there is only two outside places which are the chikfila and a sandwich shop. we don't have a lot only because there are plenty of restaurants near the school that are walking distance as well and if you drive it's not a far drive either. i do wish there were a bit more options but we are having a new student center built that is supposed to have another dining hall too.

    Dorm Life

from what i have heard the dorm life is great. there is a main dorm in the center of campus just for freshman and there are plenty of dorms to choose from. i've only been to a few to see how they are and they are clean and look comfortable. there are locks on the doors and you have to swipe your id so it is really safe. i do recommend living in the residence halls because things are more convenient and you have a lot more involvement.

    Academic Rigor

one of the schools main missions and values is academics and they strive the students to do really well and focus on school. the professors are really helpful and you really have a lot of opportunities to strive more and also if you need help. there is always tutoring and the professors always offer their office hours and are there to help.

    In three sentences

the university of the incarnate word is an amazing and welcoming place. they have many opportunities where you can strive and the school is like a community. you really find your place here and it is a wonderful school for academics, sports, activities, and exploring your faith and the mission of the school.

    What to do for fun

Plenty of clubs to join, gym, sand volleyball court, olympic size swimming pool, lots of activities like concerts, foam parties (with free t-shirts), tailgating, a school's version of coachella (also with free t-shirts), among other things like the on campus forest pathways you can walk/jog on and nearby things like parks, the zoo, gardens, downtown isn't far, karaoke nights at some of the bars & restaurants down the street, and museums. You also get student discount at some museums, restaurants, stores in the outlet mall, and the movies.

    Food and Dining

They do have chickfila, a variation of subway (called Sammie's), and a Starbucks on campus along with the main dining hall. The food in the main dining hall isn't always the best, but there are plenty of other options to pick from and there are lots of fast food and restaurants right next to campus. They also sometimes give free tacos from taco trucks and other food too on certain occasions.

    Dorm Life

I have lived on campus in all my years attending here and dorms were one of the most important things for me as far as picking a college. They are great and don't look like 50's barracks like other campuses I've seen.

    Academic Rigor

Classes and teachers are pretty in depth and are always willing to explain or elaborate more on any confusion or troubles you may have.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the campus first to see if it is the right fit for you. Every person is different, as well as campuses and some colleges sound one way on paper, but prove differently once you visit; so visit first and know your priorities in what you want from your college.

    In three sentences

I'm a junior here and I absolutely love this school and would never want to transfer from it. I am currently doing study abroad with the school in Greece and this trip has made me realize how much I love UIW and would not trade this college for the world. It is basically home to me and will be sad to leave it after I graduate.

    Food and Dining

I tipclkly bring my own stacks because my classes are back to back so i'm not there long.

    Dorm Life

For me dorm life was not an option, but I here it is great.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are easy if study time is added daily. very managame but can kick in the butt if not monitered .

    Tips for prospective students

Tuition is expensive so make sure it's a clear choice and it's affordable. AM classes are the best and easy to get out of the way but if unable to get out of bed don't attempt to take the, because attendance is important. .

    In three sentences

UIW is the perfect school if interested in a small campus and small class room sizes. The professors are simply amazing and they are there for the students. The campus has so much character and I find it peaceful and beautiful

There are always loads of fun campus activities going on. If you stop by the Student hall, something interesting is always happening and they can keep you up to date about events happening.

    Food and Dining

Food on campus is expensive, and not always that great. There is a Chik-fil-a in the basement of the Admin building but it costs more then a normal one. You're better off running across the street to one of the nearby restaurants.

    Academic Rigor

The professors are there to teach you, and that's just what they'll do. They aren't looking to just get you in and out of the classes, but they are looking to help you learn something that you didn't know before.

    In three sentences

Tuition is a little high, but it is not a publicly funded school. The classes are small and close knit though, and the professors are always striving to help you learn.

    Campus Safety

The campus is very safe. It is located in a fairly nice area, and you will see campus security out and about throughout the day.

    Clubs and Activities

The university offers many environmental friendly clubs.

Great for these types of students

The university offers more of a liberal, calm feel. It is a great place to focus on school and your future. If you're looking to party, this is definitely not the place for you.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a lot of diversity on campus so you will find many unique festivals and fun activities for students of all ethnic backgrounds and interests.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is a bit expensive, but most students do qualify for financial aid. It is well worth it if you can afford it, because the small classes are amazing.

    What to do for fun

The university is located in a gorgeous place of town, filled with parks, zoos, museums, and bars. There is also the Quarry Market, which is a nice shopping center near the school.

    Food and Dining

The food was terrible and extremely expensive. There were very limited options and almost nothing healthy was ever available. Your best bet is to go grocery shopping and luckily, there's a Central Market less than a few minutes away from campus.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are a bit old, but still have a nice feel to them. The students were very welcoming and friendly . The walkway from the dorms to classrooms were a bit far, but manageable.

    Academic Rigor

The workload was a good amount, but the tests were a bit difficult. Some professors gave reviews, while others did not. Most of the exams were essays and the university puts much emphasis on the importance of composition and writing.

    Tips for prospective students

Time management is by far the most important thing a student must learn to be successful in college. With few classes throughout the day and much free time, students must know when to study and when to play.

    In three sentences

The University of the Incarnate Word is a wonderful campus where you will find many opportunities to advance in your field of study. The professors and staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful to all their students. You will instantly fall in love with the friendly environment and calming atmosphere.

The police are pretty stingy and close gates early so people can only enter and exit through one gate; they're also fond on giving parking tickets.

    Greek Life

Seems to be a pretty big thing for students interested in that stuff!

    Clubs and Activities

Like I said, not much to choose from and they are hard to find!

Great for these types of students

Quiet, hard-working students, and also good for students who want to live at home still.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The clock tower always goes off around noon and plays a little hymn!

    Bang for the buck

It's a pricy school with not much available for commuter students to get involved, you really to have to look for something if you want to meet new people in organizations. But if you have a scholarship that they provide for you, I say try the school out!

    What to do for fun

Hangout in the student center or outside in the open grassy areas. There's also sand volleyball.

    Food and Dining

The Starbucks/cafe isn't that great, but the cafeteria has some decent food.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are older, but people seem to enjoy living on campus!

    Academic Rigor

Depends on the classes you take! Some professors are easy and give extra credit but some are more serious.

    Tips for prospective students

All buildings are distanced at about 2 minutes from each other, so tardiness shouldn't be an issue unless you commute and park in the parking garage across campus! We are now division one, and football is becoming a big thing here on campus, so if you go here, prepare for small classes, football pep rallys and CARDINAL SPIRIT!

    In three sentences

University of the Incarnate Word, or UIW, as we call it, is a close-knit community where everyone is hard at work. Students generally keep to themselves, but the cool thing is classes are extremely small; you know the professors and the professors know you! What to do for fun

The good thing about the campus is that its on Broadway, it has nice restaurants in walking distance, as is the base and the witte museum. downtown is maybe a ten minute drive, and the zoo and other museums are relatively close as well.

    Food and Dining

The lunches in the student hall are nice, and its a buffet, you don't like that theres a Sammy's and chickfila about a two minute walk away. If not that then you can take the shuttle or walk to java on the hill, where they have more junk kind of food, like pizza.

    Dorm Life

I don't live on campus but I have been to the dorms and chiiled in them, they're nice on the main campus, spacious, but the single dorms are scary small. I'm claustrophobic so it scares me, but if you like being by yourself its good.

    Academic Rigor

I came out of high school about 8 months ago, the transition was not too hard except the homework you have to be on top of it. It's not too difficult unless you don't pay attention in class and use your resources the teacher provides.

    In three sentences

The school is small, clean and open for a private Catholic school. It has a nice atmosphere, good people and teachers that try to help you out as much as they can. It has lots of clubs and activities to join and many oppurtunities to take advantage of.

    Bang for the buck

If you don't expect to get a very significant amount of financial aid to pay for tuition, I would definitely not say that UIW is worth the ever-rising price. You could go to a public university for a fraction of the price and have so many more resources on and off campus.

    Food and Dining

The campus itself has no real choices except a starbucks, chikfila, and really gross, overpriced cafeteria. Off campus, however, there are endless yummy choices within walking distance!

    Dorm Life

I lived off campus so I do not have first-hand experience of the dorms. From the friends I know who live in dorms, they are mostly clean, safe, and fun.

    Academic Rigor

The professors are not unreasonable in their expectations. I worked multiple part-time jobs while taking the maximum amount of hours each semester and I am on track to complete a double major within 4 years. So it's not impossible academically.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you have all of your finances lined up before you start attending and that you have a fairly clear idea of what you want to do as a major so that you do not waste any time or money at this pricey school.

    In three sentences

UIW is a comfortable, motivating environment. The professors are caring and helpful and the students are kind and diverse. And San Antonio is a great city to live in!

Aside form the controversy with the campus police, the campus feels very safe and most pathways are lit at night.

    Greek Life

There are a few Greeks organizations meant for a veriety of people. I haven't noticed a snobby group yet.

    Clubs and Activities

I love every organization on the campus. The professional organizations represent the university and its mission extremely well.

Great for these types of students

Small town students, or anyone who is very religious.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Bad luck if you walk under the clock tower. The clock tower has a bell that goes off every 30 min, even at night. Light the way ceremonies are beautiful around Christmas time. The school is big on the ministry and community service is required of every student.

    Bang for the buck

Very expensive school, because it is a private university. Small class rooms and dedicated professors make it all worth it. financial aid is given to a large percentage of the students, so in the end it may not be too bad

    What to do for fun

You're not too far from downtown San Antonio with the river walk and various bars and night clubs. There is a mall about 3 minutes away from the campus.

    Food and Dining

Food sometimes gets a little boring, but you are given a choice. The campus is big in nutrition so there are plenty of healthy and vegan choices.

    Dorm Life

Sometimes the food gets old, but most RAs are friendly and easy going.

    Academic Rigor

Freshmen year feels like a repeat of high school but it quickly changes the more courses you take.

    Tips for prospective students

Get familiar with the map and names of the buildings and enjoy the small beautiful campus. Get involved in as many organizations you can. Also try and score as many free t shirts and free food.

    What to do for fun

There's normally a group who play video games in the Marian Hall Lounge for example, or if you're 21+ you can go to one of the local bars. There's a mall, two Museums, movie theaters, and the Riverwalk that you can go to.

    Food and Dining

The food at the Marian Hall buffet can be a little unpredictable. Some days it can be crazy good, while other days it can be a little disappointing. Even so there's no lack of choices! There is McDonalds, Starbucks (On Campus), Sonic, I-Hop, and Jim's nearby the school, just to name a few places.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is fun! From what I've experienced everyone generally gets along.

    Academic Rigor

Most classes are fairly rigorous. Even so I'm sure like most schools there are a class or two sprinkled in that may be considered fairly to really easy to pass.

    Tips for prospective students

The only thing I can really say is to be prepared to search for parking if you're a commuter. If you're not a commuter and staying in the dorms I recommend taking the bus.

    In three sentences

Incarnate word is a really pretty campus. The professors and students alike are very friendly to anyone who is new. I am very pleased with my experience so far.

A student here would be happy if they are open-minded, hard working, and determined.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I love the sky room, it is beautiful and quiet. I truly enjoyed the president's dinner there.

    Bang for the buck

There are somethings that I can't comprehend why there is so much money going towards the school. However there are a lot of projects that as they are being developed, they are showing where our money is going into.

    What to do for fun

There are tons of things to do for fun! Join a club, or volunteer. You can go work out or have a nice game of football or basketball. I personally like to take long walks on the campus. I also enjoy the student center. I really like to kick it with my friends over a nice meal.

    Food and Dining

I enjoy the food very much, there is always something different in the cafeteria. I have also heard that the food is fresh and brought in everyday. There is always something you can find that will satisfy your appetite.

    Dorm Life

I love my dorm, and the community created in it. My roommate and peers of the hall are really friendly, and when ever there is a conflict, we always work it out.

    Academic Rigor

This school may have a high percentage acceptance rate, but the school is not at all easy. It is quite challenging and should not be underestimated.

    Tips for prospective students

I would suggest for prospective students to make sure they stay on top of their things, and I also recommend them to always be applying to scholarships.

    In three sentences

I love the University of the Incarnate Word, because it is a small private school. The principles on which it is founded is Catholicism, although the school challenges us students to expand our ideas, and gives great attention to the students. Finally I love the environment on the campus, as it is filled with many students who are there to learn and enjoy their time.

There are many restaurants around the school, but only one place (Chick-fila) on campus. The cafeteria buffet is fantastic.

    Academic Rigor

I am a first-semester freshman, so I have not taken any upper-level classes yet. The current coursework is relatively easy, as long as you put effort into it.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want to become part of a small, intellectual community, I would consider joining the UIW family. Regardless of your college choice, keep your grades up, preferably 3.0+. (If you have good SAT scores and grades above a 3.5, join the Honors Program! You instantly become part of a network of friends and teachers).

    In three sentences

The faculty and staff is wonderful. The small class sizes make it really easy to develop lasting relationships with professors and receive help. The university is constantly expanding, providing new majors and services for students.

We have campus police ready and on call 24/7. After 11 pm they shut all the gates around campus except for one entrance and only there are students allowed to leave or come onto campus with their student ID, this is checked by Campus police. Your ID will only allow you to get into your Dorm and your floor of the hall, not into any other building.

    Greek Life

Not in any, but a lot are involved on campus and I hear nothing but good things from anyone in Greek life

    Clubs and Activities

I was involved with Soccer my freshman year and am currently in two Societies for my high academics. They make sure you stay on academics first, and the clubs and organizations all improve the overall experience.

Great for these types of students

Anyone who likes average size classrooms (small amount of students within them). Determined, friendly and ready to learn.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have a clock tower on campus, and they say if you walk through it, you won't graduate at this University. We have an awesome tradition called Light the Way where every tree on campus is light up from the start of November through the holidays. Its such a beautiful sight most families come from all over to visit and in the community.

    Bang for the buck

It has a pretty expensive tuition however it pays out in the long run with studies, student to teacher ratio and the experience you will have here.

    What to do for fun

In San Antonio there is a lot to do such as bowling, movies, mini-golf, the malls and shops nearby. There is the San Antonio river walk nearby as well as the Zoo and Museums. Also, there is free stuff to do such as see the Japanese tea gardens close by or the Botanical Gardens.

    Food and Dining

They have a buffet with vegetarian, main line foods, Pizza, salads, desserts, and a make-anything line (which comes in handy when you want a quesadilla!) There is also a place where you can get a square meal, Sammies (which is a make your own sandwich place), Starbucks, and a Chick-Fla.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is very good with welcoming Resident Assistants that help with any concerns or issues that may arise. Most have kitchens within the hall on each floor, a TV lounge, and study rooms. They are even looking into having computer labs put into them for student use.

    Academic Rigor

Some of the classes are known to be very tough at this college but as long as you study and have good time management and organization skills you will be fine! Make sure to buy and use a planner!

    Tips for prospective students

Speak with the professors outside of the classroom and go into their office hours for help with studies. Ask your Mentors, Resident assistants, or other students on campus if you need help with anything, no one will turn you down. Buy and make use of your planner. Get involved somehow on campus whether it be with an organization, job, or volunteer in the area because it will improve the college experience as well as get you a group to hang with in the area!

    In three sentences

The students and faculty follow their mission as a University. The Teachers often take pride in what they teach making the University a great learning environment to grow, strive, and succeed. On our friendly campus there is great pride in trying to make it ecologically sustainable and we continue to spread the Word.

In the background we have fireworks going off to top off the whole night. It's such a fun experience with your friends and family.

    Clubs and Activities

TONS of clubs and activities. There's something for everyone to be a part of.

    Service-oriented, leaders, scholars, diverse, hispanic

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Although the school is a Roman Catholic institution, it has a ton of events that celebrate different cultures and religions in order to make everyone feel comfortable. This school has an incredible amount of diversity, too. You're always being presented with the opportunity to meet someone from a different country.

    Bang for the buck

This school is way overpriced when you compare the amenities and class difficulty to other schools. However, the working opportunities, available facilities, networking capabilities, and service opportunities definitely make you feel like you're getting the bang for your buck.

    What to do for fun

There is always something happening on campus that you can go to. In addition to that, there are many things to do off-campus that are fun to do. The parties aren't always the best, but can still be fun.

    Food and Dining

There are plenty of options for dining on and off campus. However, the hours for on-campus dining are very limited.

    Dorm Life

Housing is in excellent proximity of the main campus. The rooms are a little outdated closer to main campus, but are still okay.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are not that difficult.

    Tips for prospective students

Save your money because the costs are incredibly expensive. You don't necessarily need your own computer because there's a ton available in the library and media center.

The police here are pretty safe. I know they stay around the clock at the front entrance on weekdays (or at least very, very late at night).

    Greek Life

The greek life here is not traditional at all. They have the AKA's, but the others I had never heard of until I got here. So, if you are looking for a specific greek society, I suggest you check before you get here.

    What to do for fun

There are 3 malls nearby: the Quarry Market, Northstar Mall, and the RiverCenter (on the River Walk). There are clubs downtown and around the city and parks for biking, walking, running, climbing/hiking, etc. There are also things to do in surrounding cities if you have the transportation.

    Food and Dining

The food is alright in the main dining hall most days. There are always sandwiches, salads, desserts, grilled foods, cereal, fruit, and pizza. There is a condensed Chick-Fil-A, Starbucks (also condensed, but getting more of the regular menu), and 2 other places. Just depends on your taste.

    Dorm Life

It depends on where you are, the kind of people you live with, etc. It's also what you make it, but overall, it is good. There are nice, hot showers, some rooms have a lot of space, others, not so much, it just depends on where you live. Also, it can get really quiet on campus from Thursday to Sunday.

    Academic Rigor

College is as hard academically as you make it. Professors are mostly easy to talk to, but you never know unless you speak up.

    Tips for prospective students

Do your homework and extra credit (if given)!!! Talk to your professors because you never know how much they can help you when you need it most. If you want to make friends, you have to be social! If you want to party, you might have to find the party. Or, at least find people who know where all the parties are/will be.

    Campus Safety

Huge thing about my late night classes is that I have to walk back to the garage. The shuttle system UIW has shuts off at 19:40 so I can not ride it back to my car. :( However, I do not feel scared to walk across campus in the dark. It is very well lite on the path I take. I am always prepared with my keys to get to the car and walk with a buddy. Always thing smart. I don't feel unsafe because I take the safe route and use safety precautions. You should as well. Other than that, campus police is available.

    Greek Life

Freshmen, or at least people with less than 12 hours are unable to be apart of greek life until those 12 hours are received from school. So usually, after your first semester you are able to join. There is always drama in any club, please do not let that scare you out of joining. I already picked the sorority I want to rush in the spring. Everyone so far is really sweet. One girl gave me a I could care less look, but I complemented her and automatically I could tell she was nice. It was only a bad day. That's all it really is. People take things personally and are quick to react. DO join GREEK, I hear it is a blast! UIW requires service, but I love serving anyways and greek is a big way to get hours or find an organization you love supporting. That's exactly why the founders created them. To support your community. Just happens sororities (since I'm a girl) get to be girly while they so them and have super secret ceremonies I do not know about! ;D

    Clubs and Activities

Clubs are big on campus. Pick one through three to be involved in. With eighteen hours it is all the time I have to do. Clubs are fun though, weather a member or an officer DO IT. Just do something to get you out there and at least find a few reliable friends to gather with on nights you need to cry. These friends will know your true potential by your effort involved in the organization and will see your passion throughout the club. These people are those you can use to support in another activity you are doing. It all depends but clubs are connections. Especially depending on what professors are apart of those clubs. Be active, participate, run for office if you want, and most importantly learn from your business like mistakes now so later you can take them to the real world!

Great for these types of students

There are so many smart people on campus. Unfortunately, some who thing they are smarter than everyone else. There are always going to be people where ever you go. Here is the list; those who run over you, curse, sag their pants, dress super professionally, are sweet, smart, actual smart asses, people who have never cracked a book, and people who are afraid to crack a book because they are afraid.. UIW is for people who want to learn. COME TO UIW IF YOU WANT TO LEARN. I don't think I'm the smartest but my professors realize I want to be a sponge. Go to college because you want to learn, not because you want a degree to prove you have one. :) ... I may have just described what I want in a best friend haha, oops!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is this little grove right next to a bridge on the middle northern part of campus. I didn't know it was there until I took a tour. Taylor Swift has a song called, Holy Ground, well that's what I felt when I saw it. It feels like a grotto with out any statues. Very serine. Visit it before you leave campus and you will know what I'm talking about.

    Bang for the buck

UIW can be pricy but since they were my second choice due to financial reasons they pulled out some options and found ways for me to get more financial help and scholarships. I worked for so many of my scholarships though, my goodness. Most of my tuition is paid by scholarships of the scholarships UIW allowed me through my GPA, involvement, service, etc. I worked hard in high school to get my bang for buck. YOU SHOULD TOO. Always communicate with UIW or what ever university you are considering to attend to first though before you cross them off your list as to expensive. If you want to go there and they want you as a student, they will work with you to figure out a way to get you there. They exceeded my expectations will financial help.

    What to do for fun

GO TO EVERY SINGLE EVENT the campus has to offer. I am an intellectual so I like attending the speeches our campus has to offer. There are so many people to learn from I'm at least attending one once a week. UIW has dinner events where you get to know professors, foreign exchange, possible employers, holy cow, so many options. UIW also has parties though! Did I mention we are a new D1 school? Well we are! FOOTBALL is huge here! Our games are actually not that bad. Yes the boys on the teams are cute, but get over that. It is fun just to get out there on a chilly night and root for your school! Especially when tail-gaiting FREE bar-b-q is provided! Who ever though of that is genius.

    Food and Dining

The food is great! A little repetitive.. and sadly pricey BUT the staff who makes your food is so nice and the food taste good. It's worth it. Marian Hall dinning is at buffet price of a regular restaurant but buffet style three meals a day? That is a steal if it comes with your dorming.

    Dorm Life

I do not live in the dorms. Next year I will be competing though to be an RA so I can live on campus for free. However, all of my friends who have dorms have a huge advantage over me! Commuting time would be so much homework time to me but I am stuck driving to and from home. This is however the cheaper option for me. Do the cheaper option, please. You are always able to take advantage of the speakers after and around classes still, you will just get home later than expected. So rest up and do homework in between classes so you can be prepared to get some zzzz's on those nights.

    Academic Rigor

The classes for the first two years will determine the academic rigor you prepared yourself for in high school. I went to a high school where high rigor was expected. My classes are considered regular in college, sometimes rigorous on the amount to learn, but because I went to a difficult school my high school teachers really did prepare me for college. (I know, what they make you do actually prepares you for college! HA!) I do however expect my classes to become more difficult though. A huge thing is psyching yourself out on the first test. I thought it would be SUPER HARD, it was but guess what? All the studying I did made me prepared. Preparation is key my friend; procrastinate and you will fail.

    Tips for prospective students

UIW is a small school. I personally though I would hate going to UIW but I gave it a chance my first month of school.. and I am so glad I did. I love my classes, my teachers, and I found tons of people that are no longer like cliques at high school. What ever you choose, you will love college unless you don't like learning. UIW really does have a great atmosphere though, so give it a show and take a tour. TOURS ARE huge. I know UIW is physically small compared to a state school but there are so many things I didn't know about on campus. I thought I knew what I wanted but in the end... my teachers showed me what I was really asking for in class.

    In three sentences

UIW get so much wrap about not having qualified professors at my school; I must disagree. My teachers in my department of study are worldy, learned, know how to teach, and are always willing to share their experiences and give advice from those experiences. I was nervous about the career field I choose but all of my knowledgeable professors have basically told me, breathe, you are a freshmen, as long as you take all the opportunities and learn in class, you'll do greaet. I love my major and UIW really has grown on me.

    Greek Life

I am sorry to report, but I don't know anything about the Greek life. I've heard it's a lot of fun and can get pretty wild at times.

    Food and Dining

The university offers a fantastic variety of foods for the students to choose from. They have an excellent staff, and provide a wonderful amount of customer service. I am always looking forward to eating dinner at school.

    Dorm Life

I am actually a commuter, but from what my best friend tells me, the dorm life is nice, a little quiet. There aren't many residents who venture out of their rooms to make loud noise. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, and the RA's are very helpful.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor' here is taken very seriously. The teachers work to provide the material to their students in a great format. It is up to the students whether or not they actually want to take notes.

    Tips for prospective students

    1) Always keep an open mind about a class you dislike. If you can't stand the teacher or material, work on changing your environment so you enjoy it! 2) Eat something nutritious before an early class! You don't want to fall asleep and miss the entire lecture! 3) Remember to apply for scholarships, financial aid early in the beginning of your high school education. It truly helps to apply yourself in school, participate in extra curricular activities, and have a steady support system. 4) Teachers have a tendency of covering a lot of material in 2 weeks, so make sure you review a chapter a week for every class that has you reading a lot. 5) Enjoy yourself in college! Take your responsibilities to earning your education seriously, but don't be isolated from the life and party UIW offers. Get out and enjoy yourself!

    In three sentences

The University of the Incarnate Word have provided me an excellent, and helpful experience as freshman. The most famous and treasured event celebrated by not only UIW, but the entire city, is Light the Way that occurs at the end of the year during the holiday season. The entire campus is decorated in lights and a special ceremony is held with local celebrities to mark the beginning of the annual tradition. Everyone is welcome to walk through the illuminated campus and enjoy the beauty.

    Food and Dining

UIW is home to a Chick-Fil-A which is located in the basement of the main building, as well as two cafeterias, and two cafes that serve fresh sandwiches and the famous Starbucks coffee. There is a variety of food available at all of the locations that are conveniently placed around the campus.

    Dorm Life

There are multiple dorms on campus, including a brand new hall and apartments for upperclassmen. They're spread around the sprawling campus either overlooking the city or within the comforts of the school buildings.

    Academic Rigor

Academics at UIW are of course the main priority and what the school is known for. The school pushes every student to become their best with a multitude of majors and an honors program for an extra dose of rigor. Professors often integrate technology into lessons and assignments; and many of them are currently working in the field you are pursuing so what you learn in the classroom is what you'll use after graduation.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are considering attending UIW, I would advise you plan accordingly financially. It is a private school, so therefore more expensive than a public institution, but it is worth the extra money. It's important to complete your FAFSA and financial aid paperwork as early as possible so you can obtain a maximum award. Academic wise, there are several options available to students to make sure we're successful in the classroom. The Learning Assistance Center provides tutoring both in group and private settings, while PASS sessions provides specific peer-to-peer tutoring for the rigorous subjects of Chemistry and Physics. Finally, quite possibly the best option to seek help is the utilization of your professors' office hours. They are always eager to help and of course know the material better than anyone! I suggest all students use as many, if not all, of these resources for academic success. MoIf you are considering attending UIW, I would advise you plan accordingly financially. Most importantly, don't be afraid to ask whoever for help or for information. Everyone is very willing to help, inform, or direct you to where you can get help. Be proactive about completing both the business side of your degree as well as the academic side.

    What to do for fun

A lot of people congregate in Marian Hall for social interaction, although there are people who also go there for some shut-eye. Also, going off campus is a good way to have fun with mates! You are a university student making good marks. Have some fun, you have earned it!

    Food and Dining

Who does not like a buffet? The cafe provides a range of food in which the students can indulge. Protip: do not get the same foods over and over; mix it up a little. Eat a lot of meat? Make a salad instead! Pick your poison (in a good way.)

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is cool, to say the least. Whether it be a single dorm, or one or two roomates, dorm life is a great way to connect with people. Also, living in a dorm is a great way to be in the loop on campus, primarily because you are constantly surrounded with fliers for a certain event.

    Academic Rigor

Classes can be pretty demanding, especially when you are taking a lot of hours alongside work study. It can be difficult to balance work, friends, and keeping healthy, but by planning out your activities, you provide yourself with a structured schedule. This also decreases the probability of being stressed.

    Tips for prospective students

    1) Utilise your resources! Ranging from teachers to textbooks to the Java on the Hill, utilising resources is guaranteed to ensure academic and personal well-being. They are there to help you succeed whilst keeping you awake during class. You would not want to fall asleep during a three-hour lecture and miss critical information, right? 2) Going off the previous university protip, do not be afraid to approach your professors. In fact, not approaching your professors is a recipe for disaster. Approaching your professors will not only help you succeed by asking questions regarding topics you did not understand during class, but you will also be recognised by your professors and someone who truly wants to learn and understand the material. An exanple: a friend of mine and myself would always go to our professor's office, especially the day before and of a test (mostly for afternoon classes) and we both ended our semester with the two highest grades in the class. They are invaluable resources, utilise them. 3) Maintain good homeostatic status, by which I mean eating well, getting a good night's sleep, and de-stressing. By eating well, you provide your body with the energy and nutrients it needs to get you through the day. Marrying three meals a day with a good night's sleep will keep you awake during that three-hour lecture. In conjunction with these, de-stressing will help you focus better in class as well as when you are working or practising. 4) Be social! Friends can be a great resource as well! They can also put a smile on your face when you are having that day that is just not going your way. By being social, approachable, and friendly, you attract people who want to feed off your energy, enlarging your circle of friends and granting you connections.

    In three sentences

First, the students are very relaxed and laid-back, making for a chill and calm atmosphere with limited drama. Next, the teachers are all willing to help you succeed -- that is why they are there! Finally, the faculty and staff are very amiable and approachable, making for a welcoming atmosphere.

There is so much to do on campus and you'll never have a dull moment. You just have to stay connected with what's going on.

    Food and Dining

You have a selection of places you can eat at. For instance, there is Marian Hall which is the cafeteria/buffet style place. They have breakfast, lunch and dinner on the weekdays and brunch and dinner on the weekends. They serve a variety of food. Then you have Java on the Hill which serves mostly fried things so its perfect for a little snack or something. You have Finnegan's which has a Starbucks inside. They serve salads, sandwiches and drinks and pastries. You have the ICC which has wraps and then their meal of the day that always changes. Lastly you have Hortencia's Cafe which has a Chic-fil-a inside and a yogurt place. The food on campus is amazing.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is FUN. You get to make new friends that you are going to keep for a lifetime and then those that you will lose throughout college. All in all, living on campus is worth it. You eventually get to know people outside of your dorm and in other dorms.

    Academic Rigor

It is very easy to get distracted from your work because of all the other students around, but all you have to do is keep your studies together and know what comes first.

    Tips for prospective students

The only tips I have is to not party too much because it can get in the way of studying and doing work and if you're staying on campus don't go through your meal points so fast because they do go pretty fast.

    In three sentences

Despite what others have said this is a very good university. The professors care and will go one on one with you. The people on campus are awesome too and they are willing to help when needed.

Plus there's football, soccer, basketball, and Volleyball games throughout the year to attend as well as intramural to participate in. Food and Dining

There's many restaurants around campus, and Central Market right next door so it's not hard to find food. They have a chik-fil-a on-campus and various other places as well as a cafeteria. Although the cafeteria food is not good on some days.

    Dorm Life

Most of the residence halls are old or very small. The University is not good at booking rooms, you need to apply as soon as possible or you might not get one. Dorms are located all around campus and the ones I've seen are not too great.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on what course you're taking, determines it's status of either easy or hard. Basics are extremely easy, as if going to high school, and classes that going into depth about your majors are always fun. The classes are not too hard, you just have to go to class and do the work.

    Bang for the buck

Since UIW is a private institution naturally everything is a bit pricier but I believe I am getting what I paid for. Great professors, good advisors and staff is what UIW is all about!

    What to do for fun

Join orgs!!! Getting involved with any academic, cultural, spiritual, or sports organization is the est you can do in a small university such as UIW. There are also a number of social, service, and academic sororities/fraternities that students can join with specific interests.

    Food and Dining

Along with a dorm life comes the food of the in-house caterer from the university it is not 'horrible' but it can be pricy, especially if you are a commuter without resident points. Quality isn't the best but it gets the job done.

    Dorm Life

The variety of dorms is not very extensive it is also a bit pricy but I recommend it for out of town students and any first year students, it not only helps with the adaptation to the college atmosphere but it allows you to be involved around campus and get to know more people.

    Academic Rigor

UIW is as hard as you make it as a student, I'm sure at every school every major is different but when you are a student at UIW you know how far you will get knowing how much time and effort you want to invest in your future.

The small university already has a safe feel thanks to the campus police. SAPD is great too, but never really needed since things are pretty easy going.

    Clubs and Activities

When i went to orientation there were tons of booths set up for the University's clubs. I found myself singing up for so many. i am looking forward to being involved in the wide array of activities

Great for these types of students

Students who loved to be involved in extracurricular activities and want a smaller size campus and class side for academics.

    Bang for the buck

Prospective students may worry about the price of a private University, but there are tons of financial aid assistance that helped me and my family out. The money spent is really worth it because of the small community feel of the school as well as the opportunities provided from academic and social parts of the University.

    What to do for fun

There are always thing to do when you are part of a club or organization. In San Antonio there is always something going on too if you don't want to stay on campus for the weekend.

    Food and Dining

Since I am not living on campus i have no idea how the food on campus is, but there are a wide variety of restaurants in the area for a great price.

    Dorm Life

I'm not living in the dorms because personally they are to expensive. I plan on taking the city bus to get to school and the route is easy to work

    Academic Rigor

The classes I'm signed up for are a great balance of my major and core curriculum. The professors' i have spoken to are kind and will to help students, but say the workload my be difficult.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are interested in the school try to schedule a visit even though its a small school it is nice to know where everything is located and get a feel for the University.

    In three sentences

Small close knit community, faculty and staff are very friendly. If there i ever a problem with anything they help you out personally. The people i have met so far are very diverse, but get along very well.

Have the number for Campus Police in your phone. Do not leave your stuff lying around; it will most likely get stolen.

If you are interested, please look up the Greek Life page: http://www.uiw.edu/studentlife/organizationgreek.html The experience is amazing and you meet so many people that share your interests. If you've ever had a curiosity, you should go for it. I did, and it was my best decision.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Hanging around The Circle is a daily occurrence. Do not drink the water in the BSH. Bill Miller's across the street is A LOT more filling and satisfying than eating on campus. DO NOT walk under The Clock Tower! It's bad luck and the rumor is that if you do, you will not graduate.

    What to do for fun

Just pay attention to the events on campus; there's always an event going on and most of them are free! You can also travel Downtown and see the Alamo, many of our landmarks. The Riverwalk is very nice; the restaurants are great as well as the atmosphere.

    Food and Dining

I haven't been there lately, but the cafeteria in Marion Hall is not my first choice. The sandwiches and salads provided around campus (Mainly in Finnigan's, which is the coffee shop) are decent, although pricing is horrible. There's always Hortencia's, which has frozen yogurt and shakes as well as a Chick-fil-a with a selection of menu items. Just letting you know, they do not accept Chick-fil-a gift cards here. Java on the Hill is near the book store and that is where you can get a selection of fried comfort foods, as well as a coffee or two. I would advise to try every location just to get your opinion; there might be something you like!

    Dorm Life

I cannot really say, since I don't live on campus. However, I have heard that it can be a little rough since some dorms are haunted!

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your major depends on how difficult the departments are. If you are working towards a degree in the medical field (Pharmacy, Nursing, Pre-Med, etc.) or any science degrees, they tend to be more rigorous than the Mathematics dept. and Fine Arts. The school is most known for their Education program which means that a lot of the professors are very thorough with their teaching.

    Tips for prospective students

You should always get to know your surrounding area. The restaurants down Broadway are so delicious! Also, you should get to know your professors and utilize their Office Hours; they create them so that you can come in for help. Also, get involved! Join a Greek Organization or one pertaining to your major. You meet so many different people that you already have a common interest. It's a great way to meet new people and make friends.

A courteous community paired with a respectful and diligent campus police department ensures that the campus remains as safe and crime-free as possible. Theft rates and vandalism rates are unbelievably low.

    Greek Life

Since I'm not a member of any greek organizations, I can only appraise this aspect as a community member. However, the philanthropic efforts and authentic social opportunities that the Greek organizations sponsor here at UIW are publicized throughout the city. Organizations such as the Kappa Sigma fraternity and Alpha Sigma Alpha sororities are very prominent on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

We have a very diverse set of clubs and organizations on campus. And because of the diversity, there are many fun and interesting events happening on campus every day. From social activities such as mixers and night club events, to informative guest speakers who come to campus sponsored by an academic organization, most of the time there is something that everyone can enjoy.

Great for these types of students

The campus is great for any type of student. Situated so compactly, the campus is appealing to those students who dread having to walk or take a shuttle from class to class. The only shuttle rides we have here are from the parking lot! The community is also very tight-knit. So, students seeking new relationships and networking opportunities will feel right at home. With all of the clubs and organizations on campus, there are always social events and educational presentations that students will enjoy. And finally, sutdents seeking a spiritual envirnment for their college years find our campus very comforting. Based on Catholic tradition, mass is held daily, and our campus Mission and Ministry provides bible study and spiritual events very often. Respect is also shown for other religions as a large group of our students are from other countries.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are many unique locations dispersed throughout the campus. From historic buildings such as the George Washington Brackenridge Villa, to man-made monuments such as the Lourdes Grotto (a peaceful place to worship) and the statue of the Angel of Hope (which honors all children who have passed away), the campus is teeming with history, culture, and tradition.

    Bang for the buck

Almost every student attending the university receives financial aid. Scholarships are available based on financial need and academic success. Overall, the quality of education received here is worth every penny. Graduating from UIW not only earns you a degree, but it helps you find a career, as many alumni are offered great opportunities post graduation.

    What to do for fun

Between the many events that occur on campus (daily), and the happenings in our beautiful city of San Antonio, there are many opportunities to have fun. Included is the San Antonio Zoo (less than a mile away), the tourist-favorite river walk downtown, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Sea World San Antonio, and several malls and shopping centers located around the city!

    Food and Dining

The food isn't always appetizing, however, there is a perk to dining in Marian Hall.......BUFFET-style eating. When you pay for a dine-in meal at Marian, you are welcome to as many servings as you can eat (without being wasteful). Many athletes (and males in general) enjoy this aspect of the dining hall. The campus also has several other destinations for eating, including a Chick-fil-a in our Hortencia's cafe, two Starbucks brewers in our Finnegans and Java on the Hill sites, and an international cafe that serves meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in our International Conference Center.

    Dorm Life

Unfortunately, I am unable to give an accurate appraisal of this aspect of the campus because I have been commuting to and from school since I first started. However, I have been told that life in the dorms is very enjoyable. The relationships built, and the life skills learned from living on campus have been very rewarding to several of my classmates.

    Academic Rigor

Academics are emphasized here at UIW. The curriculum is challenging no matter what your major is. And, it is because of this challenge that our graduates more-than-excel in their post-graduation careers.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't wait to be great! Here at UIW there are many organizations that bring out the best of everyone in our community. From academic organizations, to Greek life, to student employment opportunities, there are activities and social opportunities that any student will enjoy. The key is not to let the time pass you by before you realize just how great these opportunities really are.

    In three sentences

This is a great school. Classes are small, faculty are kind, and the academic curricula are challenging. The UIW community provides a welcoming environment for all current, former, and future students and their families.

Though UIW is costly, they offer almost everyone a scholarship to help pay for their tuition. They also have certain loans that though they require a GPA, it's basically free money.

    What to do for fun

UIW seems to always have events going on made for the students that have free admission and allow you to bond with others on-campus. Of course there are football games, basketball games, rallies, etc.

    Food and Dining

Not all of the food is great, but you get a large choice of what you want to eat. There's Hortencia's that includes Chick-Fil-A along with smoothies, food on the go, and a bunch of snacks! Marian Hall is more of a buffet with a different breakfast, lunch, or dinner entree and everyday food like hot dogs, a flambe, salads, dessert, etc.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great. You get the feel of being on your own, and the dorms are really nice. Some of them even have a nice view of downtown. You also are able to be in on all the action and events that are held on campus. I would definitely choose a dorm over commuting even if I did live in San Antonio simply because it's much more fun and you're not just going to class, you're also spending time with your friends and enjoying what the university has to offer.

    Academic Rigor

This depends on which teachers you get, but there are some really good teachers that have taught me well-and have re-taught me things I learned in high school, but didn't truly grasp until I had them as my professor. As long as you know how to manage your time, your grades should be good.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're truly thinking about coming to Incarnate Word, be sure to sign up for housing asap because sometimes it's a competition for the best dorms. The dorms are also a lot nicer than public schools, and are mostly on main campus so getting to class on foot only takes about 5 minutes.

It's very ideal because you're teachers actually know your name and you're not just a number like public schools. You also get a lot of scholarship and grant opportunities since it's a private school-something a public school doesn't guarantee.

The older dorms and buildings are huanted. If you are someone who thinks that is cool, you will have no problem finding a few friendly ghost around campus. Also, the Blue Hole on found on campus. It is the source of the San Antonio River.

    What to do for fun

There is lots to do being only a few minutes from downtown San Antonio. There is the Riverwalk, dance clubs, Cowboys Dance hall, the Quarry has shopping and a movie theater. You will only be bored if you decide to be lazy. The best thing to do is go to Ihop across the street. That is where everyone is hanging out at 4am.

    Food and Dining

The food is pretty bad, but they are suppose to be renewing the cafeteria. I will believe it when I see it.

    Dorm Life

It is a blast living in the dorms. My first year I was in Agnese-Sosa, and I made so many new friends that I will keep for life. You learn a lot about your self when you life with someone you don't know.

Our campus is considered haunted, so we love telling ghost stories. Also, we have bagpipers that welcome us to the school and bid farewell to us at graduation with song! Our mascot is a Cardinal, and since we are transitioning to becoming Division 1, our sports events are super exciting!

    Campus Safety

I felt moderately safe on campus. There is plenty of lighting at night if you decide to do walk anywhere and I have not encountered anything that has put me in danger. The gates on campus close at 11 during the week and 12 on weekends and the only way to proceed beyond the gate is with a student id or if you're visiting, for the student to call down to campus police and inform them that you are expecting a visitor and your guest will be let through with proper identification. The campus security is the San Antonio police department so it is very secure and they are always alert and are driving around to insure the campuses safety 24/7.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs and activities that you can join on campus. There are many different clubs within each organization and the organizations consist of academic, athletic such as intramural sports, Greek, honors, multicultural, professional, service, special interest, university sponsored, and you are even able to create your own club with the proper requirements.

Great for these types of students

This University is great for students who enjoy more of the high school type classrooms, who want to able to communicate with their professors and want to have a name for themselves at the school. Yes it is a small campus, but it is what you are paying for and the benefits are greatly appreciated.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

On campus, we have a cemetery and a nursing home and the blue hole which is the starting point of the San Antonio river.

    Bang for the buck

Although the University is expensive, you are getting your moneys worth as long as you do your best as a student. I loved my experience here at the university and I definitely received my moneys worth and I wouldn't want to attend anywhere else. I loved all my professors because of how passionate they are about teaching and want to help their students succeed. Overall, the University is a great university to attend hear in San Antonio, Texas.

    What to do for fun

On campus for me, the fun was just being able to sit out in the circle and talk to friends and meet new people as students would get out of class. The school offers the rec center to go workout and play sports as well as swimming access to all students at the natatorium. We also have dances sometimes and are only 5 minutes from downtown, so that is always an option for off-campus activities as well as The Alamo Quarry Market which is a market with many different stores and eating options and a movie theater.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining experience was average for the university. There was variety of food, but I would have liked to see more. I love that we have Chick-Fil-A on our campus because that is my favorite. We are giving meal plans and based on your meal plan you are able to receive this many meals per week and that many points to spend per semester. But we also have local, walking distance eateries that we can go to if we want something other than campus food.

    Dorm Life

My freshman experience of dorm life was amazing. I was in a triple room on a all girls floor which made it that much easier and fun to meet and greet new people. The dorm life at the school is very comfortable for me and I always felt safe in my dorm. You are only able to enter the dorm with your id card and it is specific to each dorm; so your id card only works for your dorm and for some of the dorms, only your floor.

    Academic Rigor

The rigor of the academics is really all up to the professor as to how hard it will be for students; as well as how good of a student you are. It takes adjusting, but once you learn your professors and how their class works, you will be able to figure out how you will be successful in the class.

    Tips for prospective students

When looking for the right university, look for the key points that will best fit your needs to be the most successful not only in the classroom but in the community and as an individual. When you first get to college, the best thing you can do for yourself is to get to know your professors; because the more they know you on a personal level as a student, the more understanding they can be of your needs and are more willing and able to help you be successful in their classroom. In the classroom taking notes can be very helpful in learning the information, it is not necessary but highly recommended. Do not let the the classroom be the only time you see your notes. If you take notes, it is important to look over them and study them outside the classroom for at least 2 hours per how many hours you are in the classroom per week. The best way to retain the information is to study it and apply it to your everyday life; easiest way I learned to remember things.

    In three sentences

The University is more than I expected for my freshman year of college and it has given me an opportunity that I had dreamed of. It is a great university academically, which was my main concern, and it has lived up to my standards. The small classroom sizes are essential for learning and the professors are always there and available to help us as students no matter what the issue is.

    Food and Dining

The food is a little overpriced for the quality it is at and the Cafe is closed on holidays so it is difficult to eat sometimes.

    Dorm Life

You are of course assigned a resident assistant to your floor. the role of this person is to help you with issues in your dorm as well as school. they have to make events so people on their floor will have a good time and interact with each other. A great way to make friends and connection is to live on campus.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are tough, but that means and education you can boast about. The nursing school is a great, prestigious program as well as other programs within the University.

    Tips for prospective students

When going to this school make sure you are financially stable because it can get a tad bit expensive with books and other fees. Also have good study habits since managing school and a social life can start to drain you quickly.

    In three sentences

Overall the University is great, because it is smaller more people get involved so it is welcoming. Academically it is great, a student receives an education they should be proud of. Anyone would be happy with this amazing school.

Great for these types of students

This is a great school for students who like to feel the worm and love meeting new people. Also is great because the faculty is so great at helping you out. This is a small school were you can feel like you belong, anyone can be part of this family and you get a great experience.

    Tips for prospective students

The main tip i give to prospective students is get involve in activities and organisations and the first year would be so much easier. That would give you the chance to get to know more students make more friends and get known by the faculty.

    Bang for the buck

To help you with the big bucks that you have to pay they give you scholarships that would help you pay the tuition. Scholarships are base on your grades but they also offer grands to help you out and in case you need a lone they can help you as well. They also have jobs in the campus so you can work to pay your tuition. The help is their you just need to look for it.

    Am enjoying being here

Something that you can enjoy like i have is the environment is really friendly and the students around you are so nice that if your lost anyone would like to help you out. Something that attract me to this school is the fact that it is a small school because i'm not a big fan of big classes were you can get distracted really easy and were you can get lost from one class to another. The buildings are so close that it takes a few minutes to walk from one class to another one. Also you get inform about upcoming events like dances, fundraisers, haunted houses and volunteer work in an email that you would receive as soon as you get accepted.

    Am learning a lot

The best part about this school is that you learn a lot here. The professors here are amazing in helping you with your work and if you have problems with a subject theirs pass sections that would help you improve your grade and is free. The professors also know your name and they just don't add you to a list of students. They know when you have a problem and need help in something. The Adviser and programs like TRIO helps you a lot threw school specially when your first generation they guide you threw problems and answered questions. And for problems in a subject we have an awesome learning assistance center on campus that is available to students in need of tutoring in any subject even music class. I have attended to Pass section which is tutoring for science and i haven't been disappointed.

There is so much to do here. There is always some celebration or activity going on. The food is good and the teachers are always willing to help.

    Am learning a lot

I am currently a junior and recommend to everyone to at least look at this school. I have learned more here than I ever thought I could. I am a child psychology major and have learned so much about how the brain works with respect to child and adults. I recommend this school highly if you want a good education!

Great for these types of students

Students who are Catholic or Christian, immensely interested in learning, who need individual attention, and who would prefer a learning community that is smaller and more intimate.

    Tips for prospective students

If you need high levels of intellectual stimulation like I do, join the Honors Program. The classes are more challenging and intimate, and it looks marvelous on a resume. Live on the main part of campus, even if your hometown is San Antonio. This allows you to focus more on your studies and is much more convenient. Commuters aren't allowed to park on main campus and have to park in a parking garage on the hill behind the football field, which forces them to walk or take the university shuttle down to the main part of campus. I have lived on campus, one semester on main campus and one semester in a dorm on the hill. The hill dorms cost much more and are not close to your classes. Live on main campus -- it's easier. If you do choose to live on the hill, though, you will still benefit. Some dorms on the hill offer private baths and are also newer and nicer but are more expensive. If you would like a compromise between the benefits of private bath as well as closeness to you classes, the on-campus apartments are probably for you.

    Bang for the buck

You pay slightly more than you would for a relatively popular state university because UIW is a private, but the small class sizes and quality of education are worth it. The number of resources available to students is also something that you pay for that is worth it, if you take advantage of the Wellness Center (equipped with exercise equipment) and the Learning Assistance Center (tutoring center). I have only two complaints. I take issue with some of the practices of the administration. There is a fair amount of bureaucratic red tape that you will face, but I get the impression that most universities have this issue and that it is something you just have to deal with almost anywhere you decide to attend. Lastly, I feel that I am charged too much for the food and snacks here. The snacks are overpriced, and the meal plan charges would be more reasonable if the cafeteria offered both healthy as well as comfort food options side by side on a more consistent basis. Sometimes I will walk into the cafeteria and don't see very many or even any healthy meal options, but you can more often than not find something healthy to eat. There is a small vegetarian section for those of you who don't eat meat, but it is not always stocked.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy the academic aspect of this school, however, being an atheist at a Catholic school is not easy. While UIW is generally much more liberal and accepting of viewpoints and ideas that conflict with Catholicism or Christianity than schools like University of Dallas, or Houston Baptist University, it can still be difficult to find a group of students who share your views if you are agnostic or atheist, or if some aspect of you conflicts with Catholicism or Christianity. There is, however, a small LGBTQIA support group on campus called StandOUT Alliance, and there will be a Students for Choice (pro-choice) club as well this coming semester. I am happy with the level of diversity and multiculturalism here, in regard to the student as well as faculty and staff populations.

    Am learning a lot

The professors here are definitely knowledgeable and are always happy to help you understand anything you might not. The small class sizes also contribute to how much individual attention you get from your professors, both inside and outside class. Even in the core classes that everyone has to pass to graduate, the classes are no larger than twenty-five students. I feel incredibly intellectually stimulated!

Liberal students and those who would like to study abroad because they have many many opportunities for this.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure the major(s) you intend to pursue are offered. You wouldn't want to switch schools as this is a private institution and it is a bit pricey.

    Bang for the buck

The school is expensive, as I would imagine any other private institution. Nonetheless, the education you get here is worth the bucks.

    Am enjoying being here

I really enjoy the professors here and there's always some type of event or activity going on to engage the student body.

    Am learning a lot

The small classes allow for a more personal level between the professors and the students. This is important for me since I ask questions during or after class if I didn't understand the material.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the campus and the new friends i have made. i only wish to have lived on campus. It has a great community, that everyone can adapt to.

Yes, all my teachers are very helpful and always available to help me. My teachers have giving me their numbers and emails so that if i miss a certain thing in class, they can call me and email me the notes or PowerPoint's and i am able to send my homework to them as well.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips; Dont procrastinate...in high school we were able to get away with it, not anymore! Study, Study, Study...some professors don't allow make up test or even extra credit. Do it right the first time and you wont break a sweat!

    Bang for the buck

Although Incarnate Word is pricey, it's worth it! Everything you put in, you will get out. I am not so much worried about the tuition as much as I am about my education, and here it's a breeze with the great resources we have.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the small campus of Incarnate Word University. It's almost as if you have a small family away from home. It's easy mobility even off campus, because we're in the middle of everything. It's so much fun and the Campus Activities Board has many events going on that you can't be bored!

    Am learning a lot

Incarnate Word is a small private university that has many advantages of coming here. One the small classes and easy access to your professors. Each professor is more than glad to help you out. I wouldn't have made a better decision than to attend Incarnate Word!

    Athletes and Nursing majors!

    Tips for prospective students

Network!!! Go to the meetings for various clubs, even if you do not intend on joining. This is how you learn to meet alot of people. Join a sports team, teammates are like automatic family and really help you during your first year of college. Coaches also serve as mentors to give you much needed advice. Dont' be shy, ask questions and get to know classmates. You never know when the dork next to you will be your key to passing a class!

    Bang for the buck

Incarnate Word is a very expensive school, I would not recommend it however to students who will not make use of their very expensive education.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being away from home, as I am originally from Arkansas. There is alot to do on campus and in the city in general. It seems every week there are on campus activities ranging from making smores to pj parties showing movies to help students get away and relax.

    Am learning a lot

This is the best valued school for being a private institution. I have very small class sizes where the professors know me by name. The professors are all genuine and want their students to succeed and there are various things on campus such as the LAC (learning assistance center) that have students who have excelled in classes that are willing to help you succeed too.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for anyone who likes the warm feeling and likes things close and in the palm of their hand.

    Tips for prospective students

My main tip That I give to students who are intrested in coming here is to live on campus. I live 15 min away fromt he school and I live on campus! Its much more convienient to live her plus you become more involved when you do so. Another tip is to become more involved at first i was scared to but being on the dance team has helped me with school stress and my health. Because in a way it forces you to pass your classes. Plus you learn how to manage your time.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being at the school! The school has a very friendly enviornment and everyone is very nice. I love the fact that it is a small school because im not a big fan of driving to my class or getting lost as well. Here you park once and thats it everything else is walking distance buildings are all close together. which is great for people who are like me. Also the students and staff/faculty always let you know about upcoming events which happens alot during the year from dances, fundraisers, haunted houses and volunteer work.

    Am learning a lot

The best part about this school is that you learn a lot here. The professors here are amazing in helping you with your work. They know your name and your not just a number. They know what your good at and exactly what you need help in. Not only academics but also the faculty, staff, and even workstudies are so helpful when it comes to your needs. If at anytime you feel that you need help from someone else besides the professors we have a learning assistance center on campus that is available to student in need of tutoring weather it be math science or even music. There is someone there for every subject. Not once did i ever come out disappointed.
