University of Aberdeen Stats, Info and Facts

University of Aberdeen

History, Heritage, Reputation

  • The University of Aberdeen was established in 1495, making it the third oldest university in Scotland and the fifth oldest university in the English-speaking world.
  • Aberdeen is one of seven Ancient Universities of Great Britain and Ireland.
  • We have 12,000 undergraduate students and 4,000 graduate students across three colleges, in programs spanning the Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Law, Business, Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.
  • Our students share a great sense of pride in our 500 year record of scholarship, which includes the work of eminent scholars including five Nobel Prize winners and the inventor of the modern MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) machine.
  • The beautiful setting of our historic Old Aberdeen campus provides a daily reminder of our proud history and heritage and includes two museums, the state of the art Sir Duncan Rice Library, which was recently ranked in the 20 Most Spellbinding University Libraries in the world, the Sports Village and Aquatic Centre, and Botanic Gardens.
  • The University of Aberdeen is ranked 79th in the world in the CWTS Leiden Rankings and 137th in the world in the QS World University Rankings, placing it in the top 1% of universities around the world.
  • The University of Aberdeen is ranked 65th in the world for Life Sciences in the The World University Rankings, 2014, and our Medical School is the number 1 medical school in Scotland, according to the Complete University Guide, 2015.

  • While you must initially nominate a specific subject (major) when applying, the tradition at Aberdeen is to admit students to a degree program rather than a specific major. You don't usually have to declare your major until the end of your second year. Our emphasis on flexibility and breadth also means that you can study subjects outside your main subject and change your major during the course of your studies.
  • The University of Aberdeen uniquely provides a range of Enhanced Study options to all our students, regardless of their major, which give you the opportunity to take classes from other disciplines outside your main subject or major.

  • Each student is allocated a Personal Tutor who can provide general support to you throughout your studies and will be a point of contact for any queries you have as a student.
  • The University of Aberdeen guarantees accommodation for all new students provided they apply before the deadline. We offer a range of on- and off-campus housing options.

Financial Aid

  • The University of Aberdeen International Undergraduate Scholarship provides a full tuition waiver for your fourth year of study. This means that eligible international students pay for only three years of their four year degree. The other great thing about this scholarship is that it is awarded automatically upon entry to the University. In other words, if you're admitted to the University and meet the criteria you are guaranteed the scholarship. You don't have to wait until your final year to find out if you get the scholarship.
  • US students at the University of Aberdeen can also avail of US Federal education loans and we have a dedicated FAFSA team to assist students with their loans application.
  • We also operate a fixed fees structure which means your tuition fee is fixed for the duration of their studies. This means that you will know in advance exactly how much you'll pay in total for your tuition over 4 years.

  • The University of Aberdeen campus is located about a 20 minute walk from the center of the city of Aberdeen. Aberdeen is Scotland's third largest city with a population of 220,000. The city is known for its distinctive granite buildings, which were built from local grey granite rock and its long sandy beaches.
  • While Scotland is considered a safe country, Aberdeen is officially ranked as the safest student city in Scotland according to the Complete University Guide.
  • The city is also a major international hub for the Energy industry, particularly oil, gas and renewable energy sources, and was named the UK's Happiest City in a 2013 survey due to its rich culture, low unemployment and enviable lifestyle.
  • Despite its northern location, Aberdeen is milder than you might expect, with an average temperature of 34-44 degrees F in Winter and 50-64 degrees F in Summer.
  • Aberdeenshire is often referred to as Castle Country and with good reason, as it has more castles per acre than anywhere else in Britain. The stunning Dunnottar Castle offers a spectacular coastal setting and is associated with many famous figures in Scottish history including William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots and King Charles II. Nearby Balmoral Castle is a private residence of the British Royal Family, however visitors can visit the gardens, an audio visual exhibition and the castle's famous Ballroom.
  • Aberdeen International Airport is just 5 miles from campus and provides direct flights to some of Europe's top destinations including London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Dublin, and Paris.

Your Career

  • Many degrees offer integrated and assessed careers-related courses, including preparation for industrial placements.
  • Throughout your studies your achievements will be documented in your Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) which will be presented to you at graduation. The HEAR is dedicated to additional information - rounding out the picture of the student beyond traditional academic achievement, helping you to stand out from the crowd to employers.
  • The Careers Service has a dedicated Work Placement Team who source opportunities exclusively for University of Aberdeen students, so you can get ahead of the competition. We have also developed our own work placement program within the University, the Aberdeen Internship, which won "Work Placement of the Year" by the National Council for Work Experience in 2013.
