    Campus Safety

There are many campus officers on campus that stay on duty in the lobbies of dorms from the late night until the early morning. They also can give you rides around campus if you are injured and they are willing to bring you from class to your dorms if you have a night class and would like someone to escort you back just for safety.

    Clubs and Activities

There are multiple different student run organizations that you can join around this campus. These organizations usually lead in the fun activities that happen on campus daily.

    What to do for fun

Throughout the week there are many events, activities and parties that are held around campus. The athletic center is always open to play pickup basketball unless there is a team practicing there and soon once our dome is finished there will also be more space for pickup basketball games. Aside from pick up there are multiple intramural sports such as volleyball, dodge ball, basketball, etc. That you can create teams for. Also not a lot of people go home on the weekends so there will always being something to do.

    Food and Dining

It is definitely not Mom's home cooking but our cafe does offer many different choices throughout the week along with a Subway style sandwich bar that is open throughout the entire week that you will have unlimited swipes into as a freshman. I do wish the cafe was open a little later since it is only open until 8. There is also the the Pioneer Cafe and a Mexican grill that you can use your pio points (100 or 200 depending on meal plan) to purchase food. These are open until 12 on weekdays and 11 on weekends.

    Dorm Life

Since Utica College offers Moose Match which is a program that will help you find a compatible roommate it is easy to find a roommate that you can room with your first year. Even if you find that your having trouble with your roommate, from my perspective the area coordinators are lenient in helping find another place to live if problems arise to that. I would give 5 stars but the only issue of mine is that the bathrooms to my knowledge are only cleaned and restocked on Mondays and since everyone may not have a parent that has taught them to clean after themselves this can be a little frustrating.

    Academic Rigor

Being a first year and a Business Economics major the workload isn't really rigorous to begin with, but you will be challenged to manage your work with core classes along with the more challenging classes designated for your major which can be a lot because Microeconomics and Macroeconomics are fairly challenging courses and balancing the work from those along with papers and speeches can be a lot but definitely manageable and achievable.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be hesitant to be truthful and open with the people you meet on this campus. You will find out the reality of nearly everything you want to know.

    In three sentences

In my opinion the best thing about this college is the people of the community. It is easy to create close relationships early on with many of the people here. This is an important aspect of a place that you will likely meet the most people that you will know and keep contact with for the rest of your life.

    Greek Life

There are a lot of different greek organizations on campus. I am a sister of Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority. We emphasize philanthropy, and this year all of our philanthropy fundraisers have helped benefit the Alzheimer's association. One really great thing about our greek life on campus is that we all get along really well together, and are very supportive of one another's goals and ideas.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many different ways to get involved on campus, and that is probably one of the greatest things about Utica College. There really is something for pretty much everyone, regardless of what your interest might be. There are a lot of intramural sports for example, which are definitely one of the most fun opportunities.

    What to do for fun

I go to a lot of hockey games, I am a part of greek life, and I have also enjoyed a lot of different events on campus, including the hypnotists that we have on campus every year.

    Food and Dining

I do not eat on campus very often because I commute, but the time I have, the food has been pretty good. The other thing that I like about the dining commons is that they are pretty accommodating for people with food allergies. I cannot eat gluten, and if you ask, they will make you something separately so that you can eat food without cross contamination.

    Dorm Life

I am a commuter, so I do not live in a residence hall. However, I have stayed the night several times at various residence halls, and I don't think I have ever had a bad experience. My friends have always really appreciated the events that the resident assistants hold each month. I have had the opportunity to attend a couple, and they have always been really fun.

    Academic Rigor

The classes here challenge you, but professors availability and willingness to help you be successful, help make it possible to achieve good grades.

    Tips for prospective students

My biggest piece of advice would be to get involved in extra curricular activities, and meet new people. That is what will help make the college feel more like a home.

    Campus Safety

Campus Safety is great because they literally help me with everything. When I injured my knee, they drove me all around campus. They will escort you places if it is late at night and you don't feel comfortable.

    Greek Life

The Greek life isn't the best for every culture on campus. There's only one divine nine on campus which is Phi Beta Sigma. There are two Latina sororities and one Latino fraternity.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many many organizations to join on campus. Africa in Motion (AIM) is a dance team on campus, which I am the president of. We are a demanding organizations due to our many performances throughout the year. Caribbean Connection (CCA) is a Caribbean club that shows appreciation to their culture. Black Student Union Fuerza Latina Women in a New Direction (WIND) Brothers on a New Direction (BOND) Prestige (a step team) Ladies of the Pionettes (a dance team for football games)

    Bang for the buck

UC is a private school so it does cost more than other colleges, however, I have created a lot of memories here that I would not have been able to do anywhere else.

    What to do for fun

There are many different organizations on campus to join. I am apart of 2 that take up all of my free time, so I am never out of things to do.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria isn't the best but the workers do take requests. If there's something I do not like in the cafeteria, I can request a meal from the workers.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life here at UC gets better as you move up in year. The upperclassmen dorms are better because it's more privacy.

    Academic Rigor

The courses are challenging but not not impossible. There are available free tutors for majority of the classes you will take. Whatever you are struggling in, chances are so is someone else!

    Tips for prospective students

    Be social and mingle!

    Campus Safety

Campus Safety is great on campus. We are a relatively safe campus but if Campus Safety is needed they come right away. They are very friendly people and want the best for the students.

    Greek Life

Greek life does exist on Utica's campus but is not too overpowering. I decided to join the co-ed service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega. Together we complete several different service projects in the local are to help the campus, the community, and the nation. We strive on the three principles of leadership, friendship, and service and this organization has helped be become a leader and help prepare me for post graduation.

    Clubs and Activities

I am involved in several different organizations on campus. I am an off campus representative for the Student Government Association, a member of the Gay/ Straight Alliance, a stage manager for the Theater Program as well a member of Alpha Phi Omega National Co-ed Service Fraternity. The great thing about Utica is that a student is never restricted to one organization, they can often participate in many.

Great for these types of students

UC is great for all types of students, we are a very diverse campus and that is what makes us unique.

    What to do for fun

There are so many activities to participate in on campus. I often find myself attending events in the theater, hanging out with friends, or doing service projects.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall just got renovated in the Summer of 2017. It may not be mom and dad's cooking but it is still decent. There are several different options each day so you will never really get sick of eating the same thing.

    Dorm Life

I have always been a commuter student. But, I will often spend time in the Residence Halls going to RA events or just hanging out with friends.

    Academic Rigor

What I learn in the classroom is fully preparing me for the future. There is a lot of hands on learning that goes on. There may be challenging classes but the professors as well as other students are always there for extra assistance.

    Tips for prospective students

My advice is, come visit campus and learn what UC is all about.

    In three sentences

UC is probably the best decision I have ever made. The campus is a very welcoming community. It has fully prepared me to go into the workforce after graduation.

    Clubs and Activities

We have so many clubs and organizations students can get involved in. I am currently on our student government association which presides over all organizations and we recognize about 5 new organizations each semester because our campus continually grows with new interests and it is super simple to bring a new club onto campus. We also have intramural sports for students who want to get involved in athletics, but don't want to have a commitment to a team sport.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

For the past 26 years, our Black Student Union (BSU) has put on a Kwanzaa Banquet celebrating the traditions of Kwanzaa. BSU educates students and brings in motivational speakers and guests. This past year the organization brought in African drummers for a performance and it was great!

    What to do for fun

There are always events going on around the campus so you can never feel bored. There are athletic events, organization events, RA events, and events put on by offices on campus. You can never go wrong with getting a free t-shirt or other fun giveaways. My favorite event so far was stuff-a-moose where students got to make their own moose and by the end of 2 hours there was nothing left!

    Food and Dining

I like that we have a ton of different options for food. We have our main dining hall that was recently updated and several other smaller places to get food on campus. What I like best is that the dining staff will take your suggestions into consideration. One day I asked if we could have sushi and within the next week, we had a chef that would make personalized sushi for each student.

    Dorm Life

I have lived on campus all four years and it has been a great experience. I found my first year roommate from our moose match program where perspective students write up a profile about themselves and we just made a connection instantly! The resident assistants (RA) are always putting on events, which is a great way for students to get involved. I have been an RA for the past two years and I have made some great bonds with my residents by helping to create a positive living and learning environment within the residential community.

    Academic Rigor

Major-related classes are challenging, but very beneficial. Although some classes may be demanding, professors make it simple for students to seek out help from them.

    Tips for prospective students

One of my biggest tips for picking a school is to find a college that you can call home for the next four years. When I came onto this campus I instantly knew this would be my community for my college years. As an orientation mentor I always told first year students to get involved, whether it may be athletics, organizations, or volunteering.

    Food and Dining

The dining commons is brand new, the food is good. If the food doesn't appeal to you we have Pioneer Cafe to get various food from.

    Dorm Life

I like that we put first year students together so we can build that bond. The residence halls get better and better as you progress in your academic career.

    Academic Rigor

The professors push us to be the best students and people. The courses are tough but the professors are always there for us and will help us whenever we need it.

    What to do for fun

I like to go shopping and I love the events that they put on campus. Some of the events are very informative and we get to just learn about different cultures and people which I find to be amazing.

    Food and Dining

I would say that I love the different locations that are on campus to eat.

    Dorm Life

I enjoy living on campus, I feel that when you live on campus you are able to enjoy your college experience more compared to someone that lives off campus.

    Academic Rigor

Class are challenging and can also be very fun at the same time

    Tips for prospective students

I would say time management is key for doing well in college. I also would say being organized is going to be super helpful as well.

    In three sentences

I think that Utica College is a place that is small and very personal. I really like the environment within Utica College. My last favorite thing would have to be the small class sizes.

    What to do for fun

I am part of many organizations here on campus for fun. My friends and I like to talk about ideas for events or service that we can bring to the campus and provide entertainment for the students. By being part of Utica College Programming board we are able to make big decisions of on campus events and student might want to see.

    Food and Dining

The first thing about food is that no food will ever replace my mom's cooking, but having said that, the food in our dining commons vary from different type of foods Everything from pizza, barbecue-style and homecoming. Sometimes when you go to the between meal times such as lunch to dinner there might less options available for you but that just depends on one's schedule.

    Dorm Life

My Residence life experience has been a great one because it has allowed me to live and socialize with people from all over the world and different backgrounds. My experience has led me to many residence hall leadership conferences throughout the U.S which have taught me irreplaceable leadership and social skills that I will take to my professional life.

    Academic Rigor

My academic success at this college has been great because I've gotten to practice what my majors require in an actual place of professional work. Most of my professors here help us anyway they can even outside the classroom, most of my science professors have dinning hall office hours later in the afternoon where a student might go eat and some extra help from the professor. The classes in my major puts me in an actual setting where I want to go in my field.

    Tips for prospective students

Come here with an open mind and you will find what makes this campus so great. If you are coming here alone that feeling will last for about 2 days at most because everyone here knows each other due to our small campus.

    In three sentences

Utica College provides a unique style of teaching here where everyone is helping each other to built up academically and socially. The kindness the exudes this campus in unparalleled to any other campus I have ever visited.

    Greek Life

I am apart of a Community Serviced based organization called Alpha Phi Omega (APO), but we also have a lot of social Greek organizations as well. APO has been amazing because we have been able to do community services around campus, the community, and for smaller organizations.

    Clubs and Activities

This has been the best part of the college for me. I was involved in Residence Hall Association, Gay/Straight Alliance, Student Government Association, Asa Grey, and Active Minds, which have all shaped me into the leader that I became on campus. It is super easy to get involved and Utica has so many different types of organizations as well.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every year, our Utica College Gay/Straight Alliance holds an Annual Drag Show. This is a great way to show the diversity and inclusion on campus, but also we bring in a professional Drag Queen as well as local Drag Queens.

    What to do for fun

For fun I love going to events on campus. There are so many events going on, which range friend social to educational, Greek life events to even diversity based events. In addition to that, I love going to the coffee shops in the area, because Utica brews it's own coffee. It is a great social aspect and very connected to the college because we have the coffee on our campus as well.

    Food and Dining

Honestly, not my mom and dads home cooking, but there is always something to find to eat. They have a big variety of food. It is harder to find options for vegetarian at time, or even just health options. It is a lot of carbs, but it does teach a lot of healthy eating which was nice.

    Dorm Life

When it comes to the Residential Buildings, there are so many options to live. I loved living on campus and I became a Resident Assistant, which was awesome. I definitely wish the buildings were air conditioned (the first year buildings) but it tends to be colder in the area for a longer time, so accommodating wasn't that bad.The rooms are spacious, which a really nice aspect, but a lot it was a fun place to live due to the resident assistant events and programs.

    Academic Rigor

Honestly academically, the school does great things. I am a health studies major, which is a larger major here at Utica, but the work has really challenged me to think critically, but also think outside of the box and really work on challenging myself to be a better student. Luckily professors are really helpful and accommodating, while being professional and approachable.

    Tips for prospective students

As a prospective student, ask a lot of questions about the Utica area as a whole. Coming here from far away I did not know much about the area, which made it hard to get to know when I go here. Luckily I had commuter friends to help me, but try and learn about it before coming.

    In three sentences

Utica College is a college that really thrives on community and bringing students together. This is done through a series of events based on diversity, inclusion, athletics, and social organizations. It is a place that thrives on student driven initiatives.

    What to do for fun

Many students will partake in several different activities in the area. For example on Tuesday nights Pizza Boys has dollar slices so you can find many students there. Students also go to the movie theater and mall right here in the area as well.

    Food and Dining

The food here is not bad it does sometimes require more seasoning but other than that it is good. I highly recommend keeping some salt and pepper in your bag when you come to eat.

    Dorm Life

Living on campus is a good experience because you get to be away from home and have your own space that is your responsibility. You will also make many friends by living on campus.

    Academic Rigor

Some of the classes here will be very challenging however, if you study and get your work done on time there will be no reason why you don't succeed here.

    Tips for prospective students

My biggest tip for perspective students is come on a visit and get a feel of the campus and the atmosphere here at Utica College. It is also a good idea to do a pros and cons list after your visit here.

    In three sentences

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is very helpful if you need anything around campus, from having a flat tire to needing a ride across campus if you're injured. You can stop by their office and check out their pet hamster too!

    Greek Life

There are numerous Greek orgs on campus that focus heavily on service. I am currently pledging a fraternity and I am in my sophomore year.

    Clubs and Activities

UC has over 100 clubs and organizations, and it's really easy to start your own club. Check out Pioneer Place where all of our organizations are listed.

Great for these types of students

UC is great for any student. Whether you want individualized attention from faculty and staff, a great athletics program, tons of clubs and organizations, a home-like feel or all of the above, Utica College is the place for you!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Squirrel Day is generally celebrated in September, and got its start after a squirrel, appropriately named Sparky, chewed through some electrical wires knocking the power out for most of the campus.

    Bang for the buck

UC recently went through a tuition reset that makes it extremely affordable. The education and experience you get from attending school here will help you get a great job.

    What to do for fun

There are plenty of events held on campus to keep students busy, but the surrounding area is also full of fun things to do, like going the Utica Zoo.

    Food and Dining

The Dining Commons has a wide variety of food for students. Being off campus causes me to cook at home more than come to campus to eat, but I do come a few times a week to meet up with friends and have always been satisfied.

    Dorm Life

The residence halls are in good condition and rooms are plenty big. I don't live on campus, but I'm often here visiting my friends and they all say that living in the dorms is comfortable.

The professors here at UC are extremely knowledgeable and always willing to help you. They will extend their personal time to you if you ever have a need to meet for help outside of office hours. You will get out what you put in, make sure to put as much effort into your work as possible, you will be challenged.

    Tips for prospective students

    Campus Safety

Pretty good. They are usually nice except for they give out a ton of parking tickets. Like you, as a college student, have money to spare. They give you tickets on accident even if you are parked in the right spot. They also did not hear people vandalizing cars over a weekend, flipping them on their roof and smashing in windows. I don't know how they missed that.

    Clubs and Activities

The only clubs I was interested in joining have only 5-10 members and only a few show up for meetings and they don't get any funding.

Great for these types of students

    Athletic.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    All sports related.

    Bang for the buck

    WAY OVER PRICED

    What to do for fun

    Sleep.

    Food and Dining

No variety. Some days are better than others. Way overpriced.

    Dorm Life

Nobody likes you if you aren't into sports. Quiet hours are not enforced. The wiring is outdated. You could be forced to live with three people in a single dorm. You could be forced to live in a corner room (like me) which is half the size of a normal room but you still have to pay the full price. Also, showers are nasty and smell like mold.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're not into athletics, do NOT GO HERE. The class sizes are small and some professors are good at teaching and approachable but some are not. It's about average. You can't move off campus for the first two years and if you want to, you have to go through hours and hours of meetings and paper work to prove that you can't afford to stay on campus. I could not afford to stay on campus without my parents taking out a $10,000 loan EVERY YEAR.

    In three sentences

You are invisible if you are not an athlete, the res halls are loud an smell like pot 24/7, the people in the Financial Services Office NEVER respond to emails and can never help you out with anything. Not to mention the guy at the front desk is just plain rude. If you have a problem and need to speak to them, nothing will get done.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety people are really nice and will always help you even if you lock yourself and lose your keys at 2 in the morning.

    Greek Life

There are many ways you can engae in these type of things due to some fraternities and sororoties.

    Clubs and Activities

There are decent number of clubs on campus, they need to add some more but still there is a lot, trust me.

Great for these types of students

small and peaceful campus. parties on every weekend. great oppurtunities in sports and extra-curricular activities.

    Bang for the buck

It's a bit expensive school for me as an inernational student.

    What to do for fun

Parties every week, you just have to know right people. It's a small campus so try to know more and more people everyday, it will make your life much easier here.

    Food and Dining

There are not too many food choices here plus, halal food is not available despite having too many Muslim students.

    Dorm Life

I'm in the best dorm hall (Boehlert), so for me it's ok fora college student.

    Academic Rigor

First semester is going pretty well till now, it's pretty easy and professors are also of a great help.

    Tips for prospective students

It's a small school but once you get used to it, it will be one of the best colleges for you. I am an international student so weather is a bit too cold for me, but still the college gives a lot of oppurtunities that I don't wanna leave.

    Campus Safety

Campus security officers and really helpful. They are also very lenient so if you get caught drunk when you're not supposed to be drinking, they might be kind enough to let you off the hook (maybe the first time, but not after that). They can also give you a ride if you are stuck somewhere or if you dont feel safe walking back to your dorm. They are very friendly and helpful.

    Greek Life

The greek life on campus was one of the coolest things about this school. They are really involved in the community and they host a lot of events to help keep the school more fun and lively. They also take pledging very seriously and they never hesitate to show off a bit during any other student events or activities. They all have a lot of charisma and confidence.

    Bang for the buck

This school is really expensive. For me, as an out-of-state student. It's about $50,000 a year. Including all my scholarships and financial aid, it was still about $23,000 I had to pay out of pocket. But the school really does offer a decent amount of financial aid.

    What to do for fun

There is always something going on. Especially if you are involved in a club/organization. Other than that, you can go to the indoor pool, saunas which are located in the athletic center. If you want to go out, there is a mall and a movie theater nearby. But Student Activities and organizations will often host events that are available to every such as talent shows, beauty pageants, and other fun stuff.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria has unlimited swipes if you have a meal plan and it includes a salad bar, dessert center, ice cream bar, pizza bar, and sandwich bar. During breakfast, they have a waffle bar. There is other dining, which costs money or you can use the money on your student id card that you get from your meal plan. There is Subway, the Pioneer cafe, Common grounds (coffee, smoothies, etc.) and a little snack shack located where all the classes are. All of these places are on campus. Then there is an IHOP and Dunkin' Donuts which is walking distance from the campus.

    Dorm Life

There are a lot of different dorms to chose from if you are not a freshmen or if you are a transfer student. Freshmen only get to chose from 2 dorms which is North or South Hall. Upperclassmen can chose from at least 4 other dorm halls and you even have access to rent houses around the area which are pretty much affordable. All the dorms are coed as well so you don't have to be excluded from your male/female friends. Each dorm also includes lounges and laundry rooms which are free to use. And as far as I know, they all include kitchens as well. The RAs have events in the lounges at least once every 2 weeks which includes things like movie night, or free pizza and ice cream.

    Academic Rigor

As I said, the science courses are extremely challenging. Everything else was pretty easy to me.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are in Health Studies, Nursing, or PT/OT...get a tutor. The science classes that you are required to take are very challenging. It is so easy to get lost on understanding the subject matter. Find study buddies, go to group tutoring sessions, or just sign up for a tutor.

    In three sentences

Very big campus with a lot of resources available to you. So many student organizations, it's pretty easy to join one and very rewarding. The shuttles let you access the mall and the shopping center so you may get whatever you need without paying money for a taxi.

    Campus Safety

Utica always feels like a safe campus. Security is never far away and they're always friendly and willing to help. You see them all around campus everyday. There are cameras in the entrances to the dorms which is reassuring. The city of Utica isn't the safest place in the world, but the college has never felt unsafe.

    Greek Life

I'm not a part of any Greek Life but you see them around campus. If that's something you're interested in, it's definitely an option at Utica.

    Clubs and Activities

If you go to Utica's website and search clubs, you'll find that it's impossible not be involved in something at Utica! They have something for everyone. And if you don't see yours, no worries, you can start one! The clubs host a lot of events and someone is always sitting outside the cafeteria with information. My spare time is mostly taken up by sports, but there is a lot going on. The daysheet is emailed everyday and tells students about upcoming events. You can always go to a sporting event for fun. The hockey games are so fun to go watch and a lot of the students go! Football also draws a big crowd, The part I like about sporting events, is that you're sure to run in to your professors, which is another great aspect of a small school. The school, dorms, and RAs also sponsor a lot of events and outings. If you take advantage of what the school offers, you won't be bored.

Great for these types of students

Utica is great for students who want a small school where they can be personal with their professors and know fellow students, The OT, PT, and Nursing programs are really great too. (coming from a health studies major). The staff at Utica is really friendly and easy to approach. If you feel that you may need extra help keeping it all together, no worries they'll help you (or at least try, make sure to double check information and be accountable for yourself). Athletics at Utica are another amazing reason to come. Such a large percentage of the student body are athletes, and that makes it even more special and fun to be a part of. The only negative toward athletics is the gym. It is all too small for the amount of students who need to use it.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The midnight breakfast during finals week is a great tradition. Greek life hosts a free breakfast in the caf at midnight accompanied by other activities. It's a great break from studying. The major and minor fair at the beginning of the year is fun. All programs offered at the school gather and students can go learn about majors. There is also a lot of deserts, candy, and ice cream. If you like hockey, the men's team always plays in a special Frozen Dome Classic game at the Carrier Dome. That's something really fun to watch! Utica is a pretty typical college. I haven't seem to have come across anything too unusual yet.

    What to do for fun

A lot of students hang out in the dorm lounges. They watch tv, hook up video games, play pool, listen to music, or even just order a pizza and hang out. There's a movie theater, shopping center, and restaurants in New Hartford, less than 10 minutes away. Besides places to eat however, there aren't a lot of options for fun in the city of Utica. Remember, your college life is exactly what you make it. You can sit in your room and watch Netflix, or you can go out and make fun for yourself.

    Food and Dining

Everyone knows that hands down one of the most important parts of choosing a college is the food, even if you don't admit that in your college search. It seems like our cafeteria messes up what you didn't possibly think could be messed up, but every once in a while pull of a really amazing meal. It's hit or miss. There have been days where we live off cereal and the sandwich/wrap bar. But other days, you can't decide what you want to eat because everything served is their best. The salad bar would be better if there was fresh salad. The hit or miss aspect applies to the Sodexo employees as well. There are some that are the sweetest people. They are happy to serve you, take interest in your life, and always smile. Others, well let's just say you better learn who to stay clear of. Don't worry though, the chocolate milk, ice cream, and deserts are second to none and as much as students complain, when you go home and don't have access to the caf and all their food, you'll be ready to go back! A great positive is that there always seems to be some event somewhere on campus that they're giving away food! Especially finals week. Never turn down free food, especially because it's usually really good. The pioneer café is good and has plenty of choices! Subway isn't a bad option either. Both are a little pricy, but nice when you need a break from the caf, or have a late night in the library.

    Dorm Life

Again, being a freshman makes me impartial. However, with that aside, here's what every incoming freshman needs to know about dorm life at Utica College. For reference, I live in South Hall. My wing of South is the themed housing section. This makes my floor a little quieter and laid back than many other freshman floors. That doesn't stop the noise. North Hall is exceptionally loud. There always seems to be a party in every room all hours of the day and night. If you don't like hearing music blasted through the halls at any given second, doors slamming at all hours of the night, or people screaming outside your windows, you may want to reconsider. Those typical aspects aside, the rooms themselves are average or better than average sized. I was fortunate to get a third floor room which means raised ceilings. Trust me, you want that! Now, for as much as you pay for room and board, don't expect to be satisfied! The furniture is sub par, the kitchen doesn't seem to have been updated since the dorm was built, the lounge is nothing spectacular, and the bathrooms are falling apart. The bathrooms never seam to be perfectly clean, mostly because people expect to be cleaned up after. Structurally, something is broken in every bathroom. The laundry room is the same story. People expect someone to clean up after them. For the most part, the machines all work fine and are pretty consistent. Free laundry is a huge bonus and something not all schools get! I would suggest watching your laundry and sitting downstairs while it is in. Sad to say you can't trust everyone and clothes go missing. Not to mention a do-gooder may think they're doing you a favor by tossing your clothes in the dryer, but don't be surprised when your favorite hang to dry sweater is two sizes too small.

    Academic Rigor

Being a freshman and taking many core classes I may still be uninformed on my answer, but the classes do not seem that difficult. Every professor I've had has been thorough and willing to help students who need it. For me, the only way I was challenged was when I let work slip or overloaded myself. Many teachers provide test questions or give you a detailed outline of what to expect. The syllabi tell you exactly when tests are. You can visit professors in office hours. The Library has resources available and the school offers tutors. There's no reason for anyone to struggle with academics, aside from not wanting to do well and taking the initiative.

    Tips for prospective students

The campus is super easy to navigate. All the academic buildings connect and it will take you one through before you know exactly where all your classes are. If you're anxious about big campuses, this is the school for you! No matter where on campus you are, you'll see a face you recognize It's a small school. You'll see the same faces and recognize the same kids everyday. For me, that was a plus. Walking into the library or cafeteria and seeing classmates and fellow athletes is a nice feeling. If you need peace and quiet, the basements of any building are the place to go! One important thing to remember is, everybody knows everybody, and nothing is a secret in a school this small.

    In three sentences

Utica College isn't the prettiest, fanciest, or nicest school for the price of tuition, but it is a good college. Academically, my favorite part about Utica is the small classrooms and class sizes and the opportunity to be on a personal level with your professors and staff who are willing to help you be successful. Being a student athlete, I am impartial toward the athletics at the school, however, nothing compares to the programs Utica offers.

Everything in Utica is about a 5 minute drive away, so it's easy to go find something to do. If you're broke, the college pretty much always has some sort of event going on whether its a performer in the pub or in the auditorium. Also, the hockey games are a huge deal and they're a good time.

    Food and Dining

Sodexo could definitely be worse, and they're making improvements each semester, so it's gradually getting better. Avoid the fish always.

The campus safety officers are pretty good with checking in students when it's past a certain time. They patrol the grounds on a daily basis. They're also friendly with the students sometimes. If you need a ride from them, usually they come to your safety.

Great for these types of students

Utica College is great for students who are looking for a small campus and small classes. Also for students who are looking to be more than just a number, but as a name from their professors.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I am not aware of any unusual traditions or locations on campus.

    Bang for the buck

Utica College gives a lot of financial aid to students since it is a private college. So financial aid helps with the tuition fee a lot. I don't think the prices are too unbearable if you receive financial aid and scholarships. As for me, I'm always looking for more money to aid the process of paying for my college education.

    What to do for fun

Possibly more than 50% of the students at Utica participate in a sport on campus. So many students do that since the school is a DIII college. There are houses to attend events to and there's sometimes events that the school has in the Strebel center. There's usually something going on for the students to do.

    Food and Dining

The food is mediocre. I believe breakfast is the best part of the dining hall, because there's an omelette line every day. For lunch and dinner, there is a deli sandwich line if nothing else looks appetizing. Usually there is at least one dish to find that you'll somewhat enjoy.

    Dorm Life

Living on campus is really fun. And because it's such a small campus, it's easy to roll out of bed ten minutes before class and then head off. I think dorm life is great, I don't have a dull weekend cause I always find friends to do activities with.

    Academic Rigor

The academics are pretty rough, depending on which course you are taking and whom you're taking it with. Obviously, there will be some courses with professors that make the class enjoyable and some where the professors make the class difficult. But the professors have office hours and welcome students any time to get any help they want or need.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure to visit and talk with your professors a lot, they enjoy the company and engagement of students. They will take that into consideration when giving you a final grade.

    In three sentences

Utica College is a great school for small classes and a small campus. The professors really want to engage with the students and are very helpful. The college has a great atmosphere, everyone feels welcome.
