Southeastern Louisiana University is an amazing college. It has an outstanding student-to-teacher ratio and there are tons of clubs and organizations to be a part of. The campus is laid out perfectly to help ensure punctuality and it has a great educational atmosphere.
Tips for prospective students
When attending Southeastern, take advantage of the many clubs and organizations the school has to offer. Join a club and become a part of something great. Also utilize the Center for Student Excellence Center(CSE)'s free tutoring program to achieve your academic goals.
Academic Rigor
Southeastern has one of the best student-to-teacher ratios of any University and that really gives you a sense of academic security and makes you strive to do the best you can. The classes are designed to help each and every student live up to their full academic potential and set you up for success.
Dorm Life
The dorms at Southeastern are impeccable. You have a choice of having either a shared room or your own private dorm. Either choice would be beyond exceptional. You have one shared, full, bathroom and a shared kitchenette area. The rooms are equipped with your own bed, a personal air conditioner, a study desk and chair, a dresser, and a closet with a floor length mirror. The dorm rooms are completely renovated and up to date and, conveniently, are only a 5 minute walk from the library.
Food and Dining
Campus dining at Southeastern is remarkable. There is a huge variety of options when it comes to eating on campus. For example, we have the Cayman Cafe', serving a variety of home cooked meals from spaghetti, to tacos, the cafe has it all. It also includes a salad bar, multiple drink stations, a dessert bar, and a stir-fry grill. Also on campus we have Chick Fil A, Taco Bell, Popeye's, Burger King, Subway, and many more options. For all of the late night study sessions and early morning classes, we have two different Starbuck's locations and the campus coffe shop located in the library, Java City.
What to do for fun
With the amount of entertainment options on campus, you can ensure that you will never be left looking for something to do. We have a campus game room, located above the book store, there are DVD rental machines housed in the Student Union, we have our own post office so that you can keep in touch with your family and friends, and the campus is conveniently located in Downtown Hammond, one of the busiest cities in Louisiana. There are also campus activities going on at all times throught the year. From our famous Gumbo YaYa, to the Strawberry Jubilee, you will always be able to keep busy and stay occupied.
Bang for the buck
Southeastern is the only University in Louisiana to participate in the Rental Textbook program. It allows you to rent out as many books as you need for each class for one flat rate of 45 dollars a class. Whether you need 12 books for one class, of just two books, the rental program allows you to save thousands of dollars in not having to purchase the books yourself. At the end of the semester, you simply return the books you have and check out the books you will need for your future classes. We also have the Pennington Student Activity Center which is a two story, state of the art, gym. Complete with an indoor track and basketball court, the activity center is completely paid for by your tuition so you have full access to it. It is a great way to help students stay in shape.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
We have some of the best campus traditions there are. Every year, we put on the Gumbo YaYa, Strawberry Jubilee, Move In Mania, and so much more. Our mascot, Roomie the Lion, is another sacred tradition and we have an actual Lion that was stuffed sitting in our game room. It is said that if you rub his right paw, you will have good luck. One of the oldest traditions on campus would be Friendship Oak. Located in the center of our campus, we have one of the largest, oldest oak trees in Louisiana. It is said that if you kiss you significant other beneath the tree, you will eventually get married to that person.
Great for these types of students
Southeastern is an ammazing University and is great for any and all types of students.
Clubs and Activities
We have a wide variety of Clubs and activities here on campus. If you can think of something, there is, more than likely, a club for that. We have the Student Counsil to help eliminate communication barriers between the staff and the students, we have the Circle K club, which is the higher level Key Club and they are both founded by the Rotary Club. There are intramural sports that you can join, and if it isn't being played already, you can start your own team with only ten signatures. There are a limitless number of things on campus to keep college students busy and active.
Greek Life
Here at Southeastern, we have over fifteen different Greek Fraternaties and Sororities giving each and every person a chance to meet new people and become a part of the Greek life. Our Fraternaties and Sororoties and very diverse and completely accepting.
Campus Safety
The campus at Southeastern has safety towers scattered all throughout the grounds. They have an emergency call button that automatically connects you to our campus police department. All of the walkways and paths on the campus are very well lit and the campus police do constant patrols throughout the night to ensure campus safety. The safety ratings on Southeastern's campus are impeccable.

Most teachers are dedicated and caring. Class times and lengths are perfect for learning. Parking is inadequate.
Tips for prospective students
Your first semester is the most important. Set the bar as high as you can, and don't stray from it.
Academic Rigor
Do not always trust Ratemyprofessor.com
The classes are easy IF you do what is expected and study hard.
Dorm Life
Above average. Prices vary but it is worth the money.
Food and Dining
SO many choices. The prices are very reasonable.
What to do for fun
Party! So many clubs on campus, events are never ending. Also, organizations schedule events outside of school, at bars, clubs, and restaurants.
Bang for the buck
For such an amazing school, tuition is extremely reasonable. Scholarships, loans, and grants are also fairly easy to obtain and can get you through all four years at SELU.

Friendship Oak.
Located in Friendship Circle, this giant oak tree is more than just a beautiful sight. Rumor has it, the person you kiss under the tree, is the person you will spend the rest of your life with. And for those whose kiss leads to forever, wedding pictures are also very popular under this tremendous tree.
Great for these types of students
Students who enjoy small classrooms with very personable teachers. Most classes are under 100 students, allowing the teacher to learn the students names.
Also great for students who want to be involved. There are so many different clubs and organizations, everyone is given the opportunity to belong.
Clubs and Activities
If you want it, we have it. There is in organization for every type of person. This includes intramural sport teams and recreation. And as far as activities go, CAB and SGA host events every day of the week. Just a few weeks ago, I attended my first drive in movie. And next week, free massages in the Rec.
Greek Life
Greek life rocks! I am in a sorority, and my boyfriend is in a fraternity. This has opened up so many opportunities for both of us.
Campus Safety
Campus police patrol the grounds day and night. I feel very safe walking through campus at night.

I like Southeastern a lot, it has many benefits. One benefit is the school is smaller and very homey feeling. Another benefit is that the school always has something going on, or something to do. It is a very nice school and I love going there.
Tips for prospective students
Study, always go to class, and be friendly to your peers. These things will make college life at Southeastern much more enjoyable.
Academic Rigor
The academics are said to be a tad easier than most other schools. I feel this not to be true but I do realize that most people who said that came from either a large high school or a larger college. So switching to a smaller school and having more hands on teaching and 1 on 1 time makes school much easier.
Dorm Life
The dorm life is very nice there. There are always dorm activities and your RA's are very helpful and friendly.
Food and Dining
The food is great at Southeastern. The cafeteria is all you can eat and always a nice meal, whether it be hot or cold.
What to do for fun
There are not to many things to do in Hammond but SELU is always hosting events from dances to video game tournaments.

Tips for prospective students
Challenge yourself to explore and step outside your usual comfort zone. Get involved on campus and don't be afraid to try something new.

Classes are challenging, but in a good way. There are opportunities for undergraduate research and getting hands on experience in labs and clinics. I'm looking at enrolling in a 2 week study abroad class next summer!
Dorm Life
I have some friends that live in the dorms. They are really nice. You can choose a roommate or be placed with a student. They also have private dorms. There are apartment style dorms for upperclassmen too.
Food and Dining
Food is great! there are many fast food restaurants in the student union. There is a buffet restaurant in the union that was just named the top college food in the state of Louisiana. Hammond downtown has a bunch of really good restaurants and bars with fresh seafood, Cajun, Mexican, pizza, sushi. And a lot of the places have live music in the evenings.
What to do for fun
There is always something going on somewhere on campus. There are clubs and organizations for every major, interest, and faith. Sports and tailgating. There is an athletic club on campus. The student activities association hosts events, concerts, free lunches, and competitions all year. Downtown Hammond has an active night life! Also, Hammond is less that an hour from New Orleans and just over an hour from the beach in Gulfport.
Bang for the buck
I shopped around and Southeastern ended up being one of the cheapest options. Tuition is low, I received an out of state tuition waiver since my gpa was over 2.5. There is a book rental program where you rental all your books for $45 per class. That has saved me hundreds of dollars each semester.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
Classes are all Monday through Thursday. No classes on Fridays, so every weekend is a 3 day weekend! We also get a holiday break for mardi gras!

Tips for prospective students

Academic Rigor
i am a music major and so far every class i have taken has been very challenging. my teachers have pushed me to help me reach my full potential. the classes in my curriculum that are not related to music are also challenging. i do not feel in any way that my classes were too simple or useless.
Dorm Life
i have stayed in a shared dorm room and now i am in the dorm apartments. the apartments are better. there is room for improvement in this aspect of campus life at slu but it not terrible.

What to do for fun
i usually hang with my friends at a coffee shop or one of the local restaurants. we go to the movies and also to local theater and music productions. i like to go to the park and just have friends over at my dorm as well. i do not have a lot of free time as a music major, so some of my fun is interacting with the others in the music building while i am there practicing.

Everyone is very friendly. It doesn't matter if they are an instructor, student, someone in dining service, or anyone else who works there. One of my teachers took out his time to hold late night study sessions to prepare students for our difficult math tests that are taken on mymathlab.com and the study sessions WORKED.
Tips for prospective students
Do not procrastinate. You can do the best you can do when you do things on time. You will be surprised at how well you have done. Once you finish your work days ahead of time you will feel great because you can finish something else early or if you have nothing else to do you can relax your mind and enjoy whatever you have to do.
Academic Rigor
The teachers are great. You should come to class whenever you have it. I learned so much that I wanted to know in my field of interest. I also learned about some things that I never thought I would learn about and they were interesting. One of these things was about how listening is what we are taught the least in school but we use it the most. Writing is what we are taught the most but we use it least.
Last year which was my senior year of high school, I struggled in college Algebra. I struggled mightily. I had a D for a long time and received worse than a D on the final. I ended up finishing the semester with an C. This semester I received an A on the final and finished the semester with an A.
Dorm Life
Dorm life is great. Everyone is friendly there, too. They are helpful and courteous of others.
Food and Dining
Food is great. We have so many options of places to eat during the times of day. They are also building more diners. So more options equals better. The employees are friendly. We have an all you can eat plan which includes healthy food like a salad and sandwich bar.
What to do for fun
Just attend events such as a sports game or a play so that you become acclimated to the school. You will enjoy your time here.

We have an area around a tree called Friendship Circle and it is said if you kiss someone there you will end up marrying them.

Will learn a lot
Southeastern provides students with the best technology, faculty, and organisations to ensure that students have every opportunity to achieve the highest level of education possible.
Will enjoy being here
The students and faculty are full of hospitality. You feel right at home from the moment you arrive on campus, and every student has the chance to establish a student organization as long as you have 10 or more other students which ensures you to make more friends and gives you that sense of freedom you desire.
Bang for the buck
Southeastern is worth every penny you out into it. Plus all of the money goes to new dorms, classrooms, and the union. Plus we as students have a vote on what the money is spent on for each of the three. There is a campus wide vote for the students to decide what classes we need, what new restaurant we should have, or how to remodel the dorms.
Tips for prospective students
There is only one thing say to new students. When you come to Southeastern you should remember to just have a good time because you are home from the moment you step on campus.
Great for these types of students
Southeastern is great for all students. From my experience i have not seen any form of discrimination or hostility targeted towards any one or any kind of difference, and this school offer a variety of courses to accommodate for every academic area of interest.
