Colleges with the Highest Average ACT Scores

on June 28, 2017

The ACT is a standardized college admissions test that colleges and universities use to assess your academic readiness for college. Many 4-year colleges and universities require applicants to submit test scores from either the ACT or the SAT. The ACT tests your reading, math, English, science and, optionally, writing abilities. The ACT is scored on a scale from 1 to 36.

The ACT is just one factor among many that colleges and universities consider when reviewing applications for admission. Your ACT score is considered along with your high school GPA, class rank, the strength of the high school curriculum, essays, counselor recommendations and teacher recommendations, along with your hobbies, activities, sports, leadership and volunteering.

While most colleges and universities accept and many require either the ACT or SAT, each college and university uses a different combination of criteria for admission.

This table lists the colleges and universities with the highest ACT scores. It cuts off the list based on a 25th percentile composite score (verbal + math) of 27. This means that 75 percent of the students at the institution have composite ACT scores of 27 or more.

The data for this table was obtained from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), which is reported by colleges and universities to the U.S. Department of Education.
