Colleges with the Highest Average SAT Scores

on June 28, 2017

The SAT is a standardized college admissions test that colleges and universities use to assess your academic readiness for college. Many 4-year colleges and universities require applicants to submit test scores from either the SAT or the ACT. These exams test your reading, math and, optionally, writing abilities.

The SAT is just one factor among many that colleges and universities consider when reviewing applications for admission. Your SAT score is considered along with your high school GPA, class rank, the strength of the high school curriculum, essays, counselor recommendations and teacher recommendations, along with your hobbies, activities, sports, leadership and volunteering.

While most colleges and universities accept and many require either the SAT or ACT, each college and university uses a different combination of criteria for admission.

This table lists the colleges and universities with the highest SAT scores. It cuts off the list based on a 25th percentile composite score (verbal + math) of 1200. This means that 75 percent of the students at the institution have SAT scores of 1200 or more.

The data for this table was obtained from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), which is reported by colleges and universities to the U.S. Department of Education.
