Colleges with the Lowest Acceptance Rates

on June 20, 2017

Colleges and universities with the lowest acceptance rates are very selective, admitting a low percentage of applicants. These colleges reject more than half of the students who apply for admission, so it is very hard to get into these colleges. These institutions are also among the most prestigious 4-year colleges and universities.

The acceptance rate is the ratio of the number of admitted students to the number of applicants. The lower the acceptance rate, the more selective the college.

The yield is the ratio of the number of students who enroll to the number of admitted students. The higher the yield, the more likely students are to enroll. A high yield is an indication of a desirable college.

The draw rate is the ratio of the yield to the acceptance rate. A high draw rate indicates that the college is very selective and very desirable.

To ensure statistical significance, this table lists only colleges with at least 500 applications that enroll at least 250 students. These restrictions cause several small but prestigious colleges to be omitted, including The Juilliard School, California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Franklin W Olin College of Engineering, Harvey Mudd College and Chicago State University, among others.

The data for this table was obtained from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), which is reported by colleges and universities to the U.S. Department of Education.
