Well-honed skills and hobbies are a viable way to earn scholarships. If you play an instrument, take a look and see which scholarships you might be eligible for.

Ashley Foundation Scholarships: These awards are for teachers and students of bowed instruments, such as the violin, viola, cello or string bass. These scholarships are for attending workshops or music camps, or to obtain private lessons, instruments or music supplies. Applications are accepted year-round and the scholarship award amount varies.

Create Real Impact Contest: Applicants must create an original work showcasing an original idea for a solution to the problem of reckless and distracted driving. Musical submissions will be accepted. The award amount for this scholarship typically ranges from $500 to $1,500.

Nellie Love Butcher Music Scholarship: This scholarship is for students pursuing piano or singing. A performance CD must be submitted with the application. The award amount for this scholarship typically is $5,000.

Glenn Miller Scholarship: This scholarship is for musicians between the ages of 14 and 26. Applicants must have a minimum 2.0 GPA and demonstrate volunteer experience. The award amount for this scholarship typically is $500.

Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award: This scholarship is for high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors who are classical musicians. The scholarship award amount typically is $10,000.

Edith Eisler Scholarship Award: This scholarship is for students who play violin, viola, cello or bass and are enrolled in an accredited college or conservatory program preparing for a career in music education or music performance. The award amount for this scholarship typically is $3,000.

Kerope Zildjian Scholarship Competition: This scholarship is for student musicians studying percussion in an undergraduate music program. The typical award amount for this scholarship is $5,000.

Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Heineken USA Performing Arts Scholarship: Students who are preparing to pursue an undergraduate degree in a field that will lead to a career in music are eligible for this scholarship. The typical award amount for this scholarship is $3,000.

Notes for the Future Scholarship Program: This scholarship is for promising young musicians. Applicants must submit a recording of a live performance. The typical award amount for this scholarship is $1,000.

Phoebe Ann Rose Scholarship: Students interested in pursuing music are eligible for this scholarship. Applicants must hold a minimum 2.0 GPA and have prior volunteer experience. The typical award amount for this scholarship is $500.
