Animation, Interactive Technology, Video Graphics and Special Effects

Animation is creating the illusion of movement through a series of drawings or models photographed in succession, then projecting as a continuous sequence. The art of animation takes many forms, from hand drawings to 3D clay puppets to computer-generated motion designs.

Additionally, thanks to the advancements of modern animation software, it has become both a 2D and 3D art form. It is most often used in the entertainment industry in the form of movies, TV, and commercials but can be found in the business and technology industries as well.

The Animation degree

Many colleges and universities offer an animation degree as part of their art and/or film departments. Responding to trends in the current media landscape, animation students spend most of their college careers studying and crafting computer animation. However, this is not merely a computer animation degree. Animation programs still include a foundation in sketching and drawing that requires putting pen and ink to paper and creating the illusion of motion using more traditional methods.

Would I Make a Good Animator?

At their core, an animation maker is an artist so the most important qualities to possess are interest and aptitude in the visual arts. Because animation revolves around creating stylized movement, it’s also important to understand what lifelike motion looks like and how to replicate it.

With that in mind, animation students should possess keen observational skills in order to see details in body language and movement and replicate them in the studio. An understanding of acting or dance as an art form can also be useful. As mentioned above, many animation classes revolve around computer animation so it’s also important to be comfortable with technology and the most current animation programs, such as:

  • Toon Boom Harmony

  • CelAction2D (popular in the professional world)

  • Moho

  • Stop Motion Studio

  • And many more.

While many animators find full-time work with a studio or company, there are also many animators who are self-employed. It’s often important to have good networking skills once you begin attempting to climb the professional ladder. You’ll also have to be comfortable devoting a lot of time to the profession as most animators work nights and occasional weekends in order to complete a project.

Associate level

Most associate degrees in animation can be completed in two years and begin with classes in fundamentals like drawing, modeling, and composition. Following those courses in the basics, the associate degree curriculum includes more advanced computer and multimedia-related classes like video animation, multimedia composition, and graphic drawing concepts. Graduates who hold an associate degree can find employment at the entry level or have the option of continuing their education to earn a 4-year degree.

Examples of jobs you can get with an animation degree at the associate level include: Digital Animator, Animation Specialist, Freelance Animator, Graphic Illustrator, and Multimedia Artist.

If you want to work as a freelance animator with an associate degree, you’ll be starting at entry level positions.

Entry-level freelancers usually earn around $30,000 per year at the very beginning of their careers. For the other positions, average salaries range from $15 per hour (Graphic Illustrator) to $27 per hour (Animation Specialist).

Baccalaureate level

A bachelor’s degree in animation is the next level in the field and is available as a 4-year bachelor of arts, fine arts, or science degree at various institutions. For many animation degree-granting programs, students are required to submit a portfolio for admission.

As with the associate degree, the bachelor’s degree curriculum begins with classes in the basics and then continues with more specialized classes such as Animation Writing, Animation History, Figure Drawing, and Animation Techniques. Students can also choose to pursue a specific animation path like Hand-Drawn Design, Cutout Design, or Stop Motion. Throughout their undergraduate careers, students also assemble a portfolio of projects to aid them in entering the workplace or applying to grad school.

Animation careers at the bachelor’s degree level include: Freelance Animator, Illustrator, Character Animator, Production Designer, Game Artist, and Multimedia Artist.

The median salary for a freelance animator is $64,000. Professional experience will help you rise to that salary level and a bachelor’s degree will be of assistance in gaining that experience. Average salaries for these jobs start at $47,000 (Production Designer) and end at $74,000 (Character Animator).

Online animation degree

For students whose schedules aren’t flexible enough to support a traditional college experience, it’s also possible to earn their animation degree online. By studying for a degree via the internet, students have the ability to complete their studying, homework, and exams in their free time. Online institutions also offer more specialized concentrations such as a 3D animation degree or digital animation degree.

Graduate level

For students who are looking to find a top-level job in the entertainment industry, it’s also possible to earn an animation master’s degree. In addition to a bachelor’s degree, requirements for a master’s degree program include a portfolio of previous work as well as professional experience and a list of credits.

The curriculum for a master’s degree program in animation includes comprehensive study of artistic and cinematic techniques such as special effects and computer animation. Master’s degree students also take classes in film subjects outside of their field of expertise including criticism and cinema history. Master’s-level students are expected to create numerous films and projects outside of the classroom, as well as assist in teaching undergraduate animation courses.

There aren’t many options for PhD programs in animation. Students looking to earn a doctorate with an interest in the animation field often choose to study for a PhD in Graphic Design instead.

Animation-related careers for graduate degree-holding students include: Freelance Animator, Director, Screenwriter, Producer, and Production Assistant.

Average salaries for these positions vary greatly based on experience, reputation, and credits. They range from $41,000 (production assistant) on the low end to $60,000 (screenwriter) to $71,000 (Director, Producer) in the upper echelon. Keep in mind that as with any entertainment industry job, these are incredibly competitive professions and well-paying jobs can be scarce.

Unconventional jobs for Animators

The entertainment business is not the only place to find employment with an animation degree. In fact, there are several industries that employ animators as an essential part of their operations. For example, the criminal justice world utilizes forensic animators to provide a visual depiction of a crime scene for the jury in a courtroom setting.

A good forensic animator can charge anywhere from $20 to $100 an hour for their services.

Somewhat similarly, the medical industry also utilizes animators to visually depict health science concepts through medical illustrator jobs. Professional medical illustrators typically hold master’s degrees and have a background in medical science education in addition to their animation major.

Their median salary is approximately $62,000 per year.

If you hold a dual degree in engineering or math, you can find a position as a mathematical modeler creating visual models for complex formulas.

Such a job usually earns around $80,000 annually.

Part of being a freelance animator means utilizing the web to look for more work once your current job comes to an end. Some of the more popular freelance animator job sites include:

  • Animation World Network: awn.com

  • Animatedjobs.com

  • Jobs.motionographer.com

  • Dribbble.com

  • American Institute of Graphic Arts: AIGA.org

  • Other more general freelancer sites such as Toptal, Upwork, and Behance.
