Art Therapy/Therapist

Not all artists love to be locked away by themselves honing their craft - there are plenty of artsy people who want to share their talent and love for art with the world. If this sounds like you, put your skills to the test as an art therapy major. Majoring in art therapy will give you insight on how to use art to diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate individuals with emotional, developmental, psychological, or physical disorders. After graduation, you may work with a variety of patients- from those who simply want to increase their self-awareness to those who are coping with a traumatic experience or struggling with a severe disability. Your coursework will teach you more about different artistic techniques, art history and theory, and its therapeutic properties. But you'll also explore subjects that aren't directly related to art- for instance patient assessment and diagnosis, psychopathology, and legal and ethical issues surrounding patient care. Good art therapists are empathetic, patient, compassionate, and have great interpersonal skills. This makes it a great major for people who are interested in using their creativity to help others.
