Betty G. Reader Scholarship

Scholarship Description
This scholarship serves to alleviate the financial burden of students who do not generally qualify for free financial aid but have financial need. Applicants should mainly be funding their education via loans, funds from the scholarship will be used to reduce/pay off loans the student acquires to pay tuition and fees while enrolled. Applicant must have student loans registered in the Office of Financial Aid. Amount of aid provided will be up to $4,000 per term (Fall/Spring), not to exceed applicantâ??s loan amounts. Recipient must be a fully-admitted, undergraduate, degree-seeking student who enrolled at FIU as a freshman in Fall 2012.

Renewal Criteria
Reapply annually. Remain a U.S. citizen or U.S. legal permanent resident who is a resident of Florida. Continue to demonstrate need and loan relief as reported by the Office of Financial Aid. Continue to demonstrate exemplary service to the community (as determined by the Scholarâ??s annual personal statement). Personal statement from a college professor is received. Remain continuously enrolled full time, in at least 12 undergraduate credits during each Fall and Spring semester, unless otherwise approved, in an approved degree program at FIU, including but not limited to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math), business, education, accounting, journalism, management, or nursing. Makes appropriate progress towards an approved degree. Maintains a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Does not violate any of the Universityâ??s code of academic integrity provisions.

Applicant must be a graduate of a public or private high school in Miami-Dade or Broward County, and must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident who has been a resident of Florida for at least three (3) years. Applicant must have shown exemplary service to the community (as determined by studentâ??s personal statement), preference will be given to service to the Jewish Community. Applicant must intend to pursue a professional degree, including but not limited to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math), business, education, accounting, journalism, management, or nursing. Recipients must enroll in at least 12 undergraduate credit hours each Fall and Spring semester at FIU in one of the approved degree programs including but not limited to those noted above. Applicantâ??s letter of recommendation must attest to applicantâ??s performance within the past two (2) years.
