Bonner Scholars Program
- Scholarship Description
- The Bonner Scholars Program is much more than a scholarship. The program allows students to be actively involved in community service activities throughout the school year and during the summer. Students receive a financial stipend during both the school year and summer to support them in their community service work.
Bonner Scholars are selected from the incoming first-year class and are expected to stay involved and support the program through their four years of college. Students who have graduated from the program often say it had a profound effect on their college experience, and often find that their experiences as a Bonner Scholar helped them discover their chosen career path.
Maintain good academic standing at DePauw University (at least a 2.5 grade point average).
Participate in educational and enrichment activities planned by the Bonner Scholar director and/or coordinator for program participants. These activities include but are not limited to: attending a fall and spring retreat each year, attending weekly meetings or Civic Education Convocations, journal writing, serving on a committee for two consecutive semesters, and handing in time sheets on time every month.
Attend a regional training/ cluster event during second year of service organized by the Bonner Foundation.
COMMUNITY SERVICE REQUIREMENTS:
1. School Year Service:
In addition to a one-hour meeting per week and one hour for preparation, Bonner Scholars are required to perform eight hours of community service a week during the academic year (240 hours total)
For the purpose of the Bonner Scholars Program, “community service” is defined as service provided to individuals or community to meet social, educational, or environmental needs. This service may be provided directly or indirectly through a student initiated project or a project sponsored by a non-profit or government agency. We have more than 35 diverse placements to assist students in fulfilling their service requirement.
Generosity to Justice Seminar: Each first year student is required to take a course during the first year on Civic Responsibility and Generosity to Justice.
Incoming Bonner Scholars are required to participate in the DePauw University Institute prior to the start of the academic year. All on campus expenses for the orientation are covered through the Bonner Scholars Program.
2. Summer Service:
Each Bonner Scholar is required to participate in two summer internships consisting of 280 hours of community service each summer. There is also an opportunity to participate in a third summer internship; this is optional for all Bonner Scholars who have completed two summers of service internships.
All first year Bonners will be required to participate in a five-day Summer Service Trip which would leave immediately after the school year ends.
The scholarship award is $2100 each academic year you are in the program. Within the award is included a book and travel stipend, which is dispersed at the beginning of each semester.
After the successful completion of each of the two required summer service internships and upon completing an exit interview with either the Bonner Scholars Director or Coordinator, each Bonner qualifies for an additional summer stipend of $1500 for the academic year.
The Bonner Foundation also will provide up to $1000 for each of the two required summer service internships for food, travel, and living expenses.
