This essay contest is for students in grades 9-12 who live in the United States or Canada. To participate in the contest, applicants must write a 1,500- to 2,500-word research-based essay on a topic suitable for publication in the Humanist magazine. Personal, scholarship-style essays do not fit this criteria. The definition of humanism that guides the judging of essays appears on the inside front cover of each Humanist; a free sample copy is available upon request. Selection will be based on originality of thought, sense of emotional engagement, clarity and quality of presentation, amount of research evidenced, and future potential shown by the author.
